Complete horsecrap, I played bother too and AoC has great graphics but completely useless because of the lag and stability issues. AoC terrain sucked in comparison to LOTRO which is much more realisticand vastly superiour in size. I felt clastrophbic in many of AoC zones.

It really doesn't matter now anyways, AoC is done, stick a fork in that clusterf#$k.

If Turbine had put as much love into character models and armor as they did the terrain, I might would agree with the orginal OP.

I love LOTRO's terrain. Its wide and open, its hilly in some area, different elevations done in a realistic manner.

Character models are horrid. The posture the models have make me thing they are in the beginning stages of osteoporosis. The faces are pretty lifeless and for someone who loves the terrain, the character models was a complete turn off. AOC's models use far more polygons, and just over all look better. It also runs good on my system so I have no issues on that end.

Armor, I hate to even get started on armor. LOTRO armor is just terrible. There is nothing I've seen that stands out and makes you want to go raid for it. I'm not big into raiding myself, but even wow came out with aesthetically pleasing armor that made you say, I have to have that. In LOTR it doesn't matter if your level 30 or 50, its all bland and pretty boring.

AOC, armor while not alot of it yet, what they do have stands out.  I'm talking just normal armor, I haven't seen any raid stuff yet. But I've seen ring mail that shines and looks like ring mail which makes it more impressive.

I to wish Turbine would go back and add models with a higher polygon count that look anatomically correct. It could be like with EQ2 and you can choose to see the new models or turn them off if you can't run them. I didn't understand why every outfit cover the female form from ankle to neck, (I'm female) until you see their under clothing. The legs, knees, all look terrible and I can see why they wish to keep them covered.

So going back to the original OP, Yes if your talking Terrain, LOTR looks amazing, its just to bad they didn't extend the love over into models and armor.

Umbral -- ironically enough you're correct I misread your first post in the beginning -- I will concede to that.  I'd actually combined your post with another post inadvertently when I first read it somehow -- long story,

    however,

I am going to ask you to do what you told me to do -- reread your own posts rationally -- a number of times you stated things like -- *I realise you can't understand such and such* and actually stated something along the lines of *you realise I"M not capable of a rational discussion etc etc*.   Common sense would indicate if you question someone's abilities to enter in to the very discussion you're having they will take it personally -- would it not?

There are many ways to express a point without making personal statements about someone else.

I think Guild Wars has the best art direction and graphics.  Gameplay's not so good but the graphics have a nice mixture of stylized looks and pretty lighting effects.

LOTR looks a little bland.  Out of all the big MMOs it most closely resembles a LARP convention.

AOC uses all of the lastest effects but the loading screens and overall performance detract from the gameplay.

Yet, there are so many who just cannot find this fun that the dedicated 150k find in LOTRO.

A lot has to do with the bland character animations and visuals.

We also are not discussing popularity but visual quality.

Time and again the character models fail to deliver in LOTRO is all, at least for myself and so many others in this thread it seems.

While the graphics were nice to look at I never felt a part of the world in LoTRO...maybe alot of that has to do with the animations and character models but I just never felt quite right there.

Hopefully you posted that on the official forums so your input can be heard, or your just another troll on a dead mmo website ?

Seriously it is really ironic your games you chose to play like AoC and what ever else suck so bad you have been in this forum for over a year soing nothing but trolling, because your games have absolutely nothing positive to convey oin there respective forum areas, it is sad and funny all at once.

Remember, only subscribers can post on the official forums and since a lot of people saw how awful the graphics are in LoTRO they have probably unsubscribed. This is really the only other forum where LoTRO discussion is mildly entertaining, all the other forums are DEAD. Also,

    1. look up the definition of "irony" before you use it.

    2. forum trolling isn't always negative, fanbois can do it too.

Anyway, this game may be the best kept secret in MMO's. It has, by far the best graphics (I have played AoC and LoTR is far better). It uses DirectX 10 (only current MMO?)  and is just plain fun. I hope more people will give it a try. Dont expect it to compete membership wise with above un-named game...but would like for it to stay around for a long time. I think espec ially those that think AoC is best graphically should give it a shot. They are in for a surprise.

I wasn't impressed with the graphics at all.  The artistic quality is good, but the graphics are so-so and rather bland in my opinion.  I understand the trade-off though, performance is great with lower graphics and opens the game up to a much wider ranger of PCs than other games with better graphics and higher requirements.

sorry but AoC has far better graphics than Lotro.  doesnt make it a better game though

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

  • Lotro is once again not very innovative but extremely smart designed in matter of graphics.

The dev team focused on what makes screenshots look good: Landscape and to some degree light effects.

Everything that is not visible on a screenshot has been done with far less love, manpower and money. Almost all animations are a joke compared to the industry standarts.

Another thing that made LOTRO feel shallow was that there are no collision checks for character models. Everyone runs through each other like thin air. This killed alot of the atmosphere for me but makes total sense, dynamic collision checks demand a complex math in an online world and cause bugs here and there.

Its why i smile when the fans praise the bug poor launch as one of the best in MMO history. When you dont do much, you dont cause many bugs - simple as that. The 100% linear char developement and quest design also leaves little room for bugs.

But to come back to the OP:

I like the Landscape of Lotro and a few of the light effects. (The fear thing, some foggy stuff) Rating it here 8/10.

I hate the horse animations and the char animations. Let alone the clumsy crafting animations: rating it 3/10.

The lacking collision checks cut off another point.

Together that sums up to a 5/10 for me, which is surely not the best on the market.

Dont get me wrong tho, i am a very forgiving player when it comes to graphics, as long as the gameplay is fun: currently i play Settlers 3 again, 10 year old graphics! OH MY GOD! and a few weeks ago i played Maniac Mansion thats from 198X and has like 8  colors or so but its a blast to play.

A good game doesnt need outstanding  graphics in my opinion. But if LOTRO is a good game is a different topic and everyones own decission.

No collision as an issue? Whoever thinks that has not played too many MMO's....

The *only* game where NPC's, mob and players have collision is AoC.

i played lotro before i played aoc. then, i thought lotro had the best graphics. but now, after playing aoc, i feel aoc has the better graphics. everyone may hate the game, but it is by far the superior graphical mmo.

AoC uses DX10 now first off and second this game does not have the best graphics.  Vanguard has 2 times better graphics imo and i play lotro with ultra high settings and get between 50-70 fps.  Don't get me wrong the game looks good but to me it's not even in the same category as Vanguard or even AoC(now with the dx10) .  I too didn't like AoC at all but it does look a lil better.  This is like the 3rd or 4th thread i have seen that says lotro has the best graphics and it clearly doesn't.  Go play Vanguard on max settings and tell me if you think the same, that is if your computer can run it.  What i am gathering is that people dont have good enough computers to run AoC or Vanguard on max settings but can run lotro on max settings since it's not as demanding and then comparing the graphics.  Hell i play lotro on max settings and it's not even as nice as Vanguard on just high settings.  Sorry if it comes off like i'm bashing the game cause i'm not it is a solid pve game, and it does look good but just not the best as people seem to claim.

Lotro graphics are nice but not better than Guild Wars or Lineage 2.

I would have to agree with this sentiment. Aoc also has some of the best graphics in an MMO period.

So, let me get this straight...you would rather a female looked like this...
    LOTRO 1
    LOTRO 2
    Vanguard
    Than this?
    AoC 1
    AoC 2
    GW
Hmmm...taste is relative, and it makes me wonder how you visualize these images...

Heck ya! Those AoC chicks are exceedingly ugly and the GW girl looks like Nellie Olsen from Little House on the Prairie.

  • ServaseServase Member Posts: 180

Ya I'll have to agree that LOTRO does not have the best graphics. Here's the way it goes...

    AoC > Vanguard > GW2(speculation) > Lineage 2 > Guild Wars > LOTRO  > EQ2 > WAR > WoW > Everything else.

    Playing: WoW,

Played: Aion, AoC, Eve, EQ, EQ2, LOTRO, Runescape, Guild Wars, DAoC, Planetside, SWG, WAR, Darkfall

    Wanting to try: DCU Online

Waiting For: Star Wars The Old Republic, Guild Wars 2.
