LucasArts, BioWare Prepare To Announce Joint Project...Oct 21st

TillerTiller Member LegendaryPosts: 11,488

www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php maybe (a) or (the SW) MMO, maybe not, we shall see.

LucasArts' and BioWare's long-awaited, much-discussed joint development project -- widely speculated to be an MMO set in the Star Wars universe circa BioWare's own Knights of the Old Republic -- will be revealed to the press October 21, according to an invitation sent out to media outlets including Gamasutra.

It is likely that the official announcement will come shortly after the October 21 press reveal held at LucasArts' San Francisco offices; events of this nature are frequently subject to a media embargo.

The postcard, which proclaims "The wait is over" and promises "the official unveiling of the game that's been rumored about for years," makes no explicit reference to Star Wars. It is branded with the LucasArts and BioWare logos and depicts floating robots and hooded figures in futuristic interior locations reminiscent of the sci-fi franchise.

The alleged existence of a KOTOR-themed MMO is considered one of the industry's worst-kept secrets, with BioWare parent Electronic Arts' CEO John Riccitiello essentially confirming the title's existence.

Riccitiello called the BioWare/LucasArts effort "quite possibly the most anticipated game, full stop, for the industry," before acknowledging it as a KOTOR MMO.

Development of the joint project is being handled at BioWare's Austin studio, created specifically for MMO development.

The best part of this is that there is no way in hell that SOE will be involved in this in any way.

Now granted EA doesn't exactly have the best reputation these days, but it's lightyears ahead of the incompetent and dishonest organization that Smed runs.

lol well BioWare hasn't really done much for their reputation within their own current communities, we shall see if they can redeem themselves within their new game's community.

I wonder what you mean by maybe SW MMO maybe not, when it has been confirmed by EA's CEO that it is.

well it's a 99% chance that it is what we think it is, but I just threw that in there to curve any disappointment and doubter backlash if isn't.

What exactly has Bioware done to anger anyone lately? Thier last big project was Mass Effect which, although I personally didn't care for it, was a good solid game with an amazing story and good gameplay.

I can answer that. It's mostly the way their community reps (Stan and Chris) have been treating some of the fans of this idea on their boards over the last few years. Also how they have allowed rabid SW haters/BioWare fans to attack those newcomers. It really has more to do with their handling of their communities, rather than the design of their games. They need to get their act together or start a new community seperate from the current one since most of those veterans are not MMO fans.

What if this ends up not being a star wars mmorpg?

Or worse, set in a certain period in the timeline that people don't want?

I hope it is a star wars mmorpg and that it set similar to KOTOR.  Can't wait...........................

I really hope they make a jump. I noticed none of the BioWare games I have played have had a jump in it. All terrific games, but I've always wanted a jump.

yay, the release of another long anticipated level based game.

im sorry but i cant care anymore.  after playing the joy that was a skill based star wars sandbox mmo i dont think any star wars design is going to be as successful.  especially after the disasters that were episodes 1-3 and the clone wars animated movie.

star wars is a dying franchise.  they need a full reboot, or they need to let it go.  too many bad ip management decisions in a row from lucas.  i just dont see how in this economy and market can handle another level based mmo or how it is going to survive the wow and eq comparisons that will go right along with that design.  people will argue the differences, but its still going to be wack a mole with math.  thats the main basis for that design.

Iets face it, since swg was announced there hasnt been a star wars release of any kind that was worth a damn.  not movies, not books, not animated shows.  not anything.  hell the best star wars content any of us has seen in the last 5 years was triumph making fun of what "hardcore" fans it has level.  and seriously.....   look at those people...

george lucas needs to retire this franchise and move on to something else.  he lost touch with his fanbase years ago.

I just cant help but see this mmo as a super expensive misuse of investor dollars in a time people cant really afford to back irresponsible projects.

    p.s.

if its level based, its going to get wow comparisons no matter who made it.  theres only so much you can do with that design.  and its been done to death for what, 14 years now in the online space?  theres no escaping that.

    Games i'm playing right now...

not sure why lucas arts would be involved but im REALLY hoping for a Mass Effect MMO. but its got to be a Star Wars MMO ... after all both are famous for Star Wars games.

unless its not an MMO at all.

speak for yourself...i am bringing an extra pair of underwear to work with me that day just in case i cream my pants. I am a huge Star Wars fan, mostly the older stuff (EP 4-6, Thrawn books, Tales of the Bounty Hunter, etc) and am waiting impatiently for a good Star Wars mmorpg since i left SWG. If it was class based or level based, i couldn't care, i am not a "sandbox or die" junkie, but rather a star wars fan and mmorpg junkie.

I do not remember where I read it,but I remember  a statement that they were making a Kotor 3 yes,but not a Kotor MMO. Now I have read alot of speculation on a Star Wars mmo based on The Clone Wars. Now that a TV series is beginning on The Clone Wars my best guess is they are working on a title similar to the TV series. Most likly a game with similar Graphics engine as the TV show which Blows.

They should spy Blizzard, and try to steal their technologie cause when in comes to MMOs, only WoW feels fluid, stable and fun to play.
