Darkfall will be trying to make $ in the worste world economy ever

TenSpottingTenSpotting Member Posts: 367

Forget about the fact that this game is no where even remotely near the 40 million dollar products like WoW or War currently dominating the industry are, forget about the fact that based on all known info to date it looks like nothing more than a generic functioning combat system with dated graphics and poor animations, forget about the fact that it doesn't even have any solid dates for a Beta or a launch less than 3 months before the end of the year... and you still end up with the fact that it will be trying to succeed and make $ in one of the worste world economies ever...  surely one of the worste ever in the United States where basically all of it's player based would come from.

How many people are going to pay an EXTRA monthly subscription in todays economy to play a mediocre at best product like Darkfall with nothing but questionable features , support, community... when they can (and already are) pay to play War or WoW , Lich King which are all proven products with millions of players, quality support and no questions about their longevity or product stability?

Darkfall is not a product waiting to launch.. it's a product waiting to fail.

Cause there are a lot of people who don't agree with your opinion that it is a mediocre at best product?

It's as simple as that, people want different things. There are lots of people who think that the products you mentioned are mediocre and who love the features. Don't apply your own opinions on the whole world.

And to answer your question, yes I can pay a small monthly fee extra to play Darkfall. And I will.

EDIT: Besides, QUESTIONABLE support? Now that is the interesting, talking bad about the support for a game not on the market yet.

WoW and WAR are shitty uninspired games that appeal to the lowest common denominator. So I guess we just have different oppinion on that.

Actually, history has shown when the economy is in the doldrums (not doing well for the lackwits out there), that movies and other forms of home entertainment (video games) do better. People stay home so they dont have to put gas in the tank of their car, and to be a homebody is generally cheaper than going out to do things. The money spent on the subscription for a game is much less than fuel, and eating out.

Gah....feel so stupid about answering to this post... but... to the OP: Go to school! For like....10 years! Learn stuff! And then post again!

    OR

    Keep playing WoW

Agree. In sweden videogames is the product that increased their market the most.

People will continue playing computer games. Its cheap entertainment compared to eating out and clubbing. Not to mention petrol.

Computer game companies will not be on the loosing side during this regression.

Shoves a shovel of troll food into OPs mouth.. learn ppll he is the worst troll out there, and just when you learn that fact, and stop answering his madness, then he changes to an alt and starts all over again.

This is the biggest "Im developing my own MMO, failure there is out there" so just feel pitty for him and move on. No need to rub it in his face.

He is angry at DFO because he was onboard (developer) for Dark and Light.. so go easy on him boys

I think you are off-target on the phrase I high-lighted above.  I'd expect at least as many European players as those from the U.S.  It wouldn't surprise me if the European player-base for this game was much larger than the U.S.

Even look at Aventurine's own marketing/PR strategy so far.  It's been almost exclusively restricted to the European market.   I'm sure they hope to get a large number of American subscribers as well... but from what I've seen they are banking on the European player more than the American.

and this is why i HATE world of warcrack. not because its a good/bad game but because thanks to WoW's indoctoring in to MMOs. it created idiots who think they know everything about mmos..

before WoW MMO's were played by a small group of people.  as each gamer was split over their respected fields

but wow bridged that and brought mmo'er and rts'er in to one game. NOW as great as that is. it created idiots who think they are pro spuing garbage about stuff they know jack snot about. why do i say this you wonder..

the OP is sitting here bashing a game NOT EVEN IN BETA... the game granted might have crappy graphics its animation might be chunky or dated BUT who cares.  people play D1 and D2 still. people still play ultima online.. and ww2 still HELL some people still play side scrollers like maple story. or 2d/2.5d games like conqueronline and others.

just because they dont match someones idea of GOD game doesnt mean others share that same thought process... some people still use windows 95.... others use vista... does that make win 95 any less good then vista? hell no. SURE win 95 sucks but so does all windows after 3.11 and dos.. but people still use it.

so people WILL pay for and play darkfall. i want to try it as the story concept sounds interesting SURE the game eng looks like crap but meh... as long as it doesnt lag or fry my pc i dont care if it was stick figures...

well ok maybe not stick figures but damn close to it...

so dear mr/mrs/it OP please go back to school get out of your parents basement put down the WoW cheat card sheet for drop ratios and tables and for god sakes use your brain for a change before it rots from lack of use...

Know what's funny?  Dark and Light actually will end up having been a bigger success than this game.

Know why?  Because Dark and Light ran off with like half a million subscriber dollars after pulling the whole SoG pioneer pre order sham.

Darkfall won't ever be able to do that because people will not pre pay for it without seeing it and no one will buy it after they see it.   lol

Actually when Im broke I sit home and play MMOs on weekend instead of go out drinking or other fun stuff because MMOs are quite cheap compared to most other things. Heck, 1 movie cost more to see at the cinema than a month of playing.

Im not at all sure that this is a bad thing for the game unless people will have to buy new computers for the game.

So you see scamming your future subscribers with pre-orders as being successful?

Darkfall seems like a good game to try out at least.  The problem with it (which is also the same reason you can't really insult it) is that there isn't much information out there about it as compared to other games before their release (or at least from what I've seen).

  • kastakasta Member Posts: 512

I have to disagree with the OP.  I think the game (provided they at least almost deliver on the feature list) will do quite well with a certain crowd of people.  This is really all I think Adventurine is looking for.  I have never gotten the feeling from them that they are seeking WoW like subscription numbers.

Now, I probably won't be one of their subscribers.  Sorry, but the graphics and animations are a deal breaker for me.  It looks like Morrowwind to me.

I think you should have a better look then.

There is loads of information on the game.

WoW was a 50-75 Mil game to develop, and our economy was great then, compared to right now. Too many games flooding an industry right now that simply has no room, or budget. The game industry outside of MMO's is suffering very badly right now. Just a matter of time, till we get hit with it too.

All these $15/month games are going decline in populace rather quickly. Because even now people are starting to feel the pinch of the economic struggle. Do I fill up my tank, so I can go to work, or do I spend $39-$49 for an MMO, which I'm going to be forced to pay $15 a month for?

I own a business and had to cancel 3 game accounts (LoTRO, SOE) so that I could pay my bills. That $45 bucks would be better spent paying my shops water bill.

Even if we go with the 53.6%... it's a stretch to say "...basically all".  Not sure how a bit over half translates to "...basically all".   I guess that's where I'm coming from in being skeptical in your reasoning.

If you could elaborate on how you reached the conclusion of "...basically all" Darkfall's subs coming from the U.S.; that would greatly enhance your position on this theory.

Your examples are probably why more and more developers are looking at different subscriptions models than the traditional monthly payment model.

Take LoTRo as an example:  A fair number of it's current player-base is made up of Lifetime subscribers.  They've already paid for their subscription up front.  So no matter what the economic out-look for them in the coming months... LoTRo is already paid for and costs them no additional monthly monetary outlay (except for expansions).

Games like Guild Wars would be in a similar position.   More and more MMOs are looking at ways to overcome instability in their subscribers incomes.  Perhaps Darkfall will offer different subscription models from what we've seen in the past as well?

Worst world economy? You mean 1929 didn't happen? Granted this is getting worse than 1989 though.

hmm, mostly English-speaking countries on an English-only forum site. Who'd have guessed that?

Most of Europe and Asia don't speak English, and are therefore hugely under-represented.

Europe and Asia are far more important markets than the US.

While I'm pretty sure the numbers are inaccurate, I'd like to say that I highly doubt the highlighted statement. As a European myself I know for a fact that English is basically the second language of everyone and even moreso in the younger generation. To say that most of Europeans don't speak english is a big generalization and a wrong one at that (I'm not sure how the numbers are in Asia, so I won#t comment on that).

While certainly people will feel more comfortable using their own language, there's no reason to think they can't read/write/speak English.
