I just found this article about Blizzards next MMO is coming to consoles. http://www.gamespot.com/news/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=26633203&tag=latestheadlines;title;2 Now with Blizzard, Ncsoft and SOE both announcing that there future MMO's will be on consoles does not look good for the main stream PC fans. THis is just more proof that were not playing on a classic Nintendo anymore. The future of MMO's appear to be on consoles to. Like it or not here they come!!!!!!!!
Ok if you say so.
"Ok if you say so" Is that all you can come up with? I dont say so Blizzard NCSoft and SOE say so. I provided proof that blizzard and ncsoft is making MMO for consoles, I could link the SOE article too, but I thought that announcement is common knowledge. Bring something to the table or don’t come. I have shown you proof that MMO's are in development for consoles from 3 major companies. So MMO's are coming to consoles end of discussion. Will it be multiplatform (PC/console)? Who knows time will tell.
Greyghost and cynthe are doing a great job pointing out why MMO's should not be on a console, at least cross platform. I am pro console as you all can tell but it has to be done right. I can respect their opinion because they bring examples and have intelligent arguments that anyone can see where there comming from regaurdless if they are a console fan or not..

console mmo's are marketed for the very casual gamer.
There was nothing casual about FFXI
I was about to say the same thing.
I don't understand why people are finding it hard to believe that game companies are looking at consoles as a way to spur growth. And FFXI isn't really a bad game (though not to my taste for a number of reasons) so why is it so hard to believe that a good game can't be made for a console. After all, if the graphics are kept at a more modest level, we are just talking about the interface.
Oblivion is for both PC and console. and yes, there were complaints from PC gamers regarding the design of the interface but I still have no problem access spells or going to my inventory or traveling around the game world.

FFXI didnt go over very well with the western population gamers because the japanese have completly different style than western games. Just look at JRPG's vs WRPG's. FFXI was all about forced grouping from lvl 10-75, and all of it was a mob grind. The Rare items were indeed rare. Majority of western players dont like that style. However it did and still does have a large following of western players.
Its "hardcoreness" is really not the point. The point is, it has great computer controls for a PC with your tweakable stuff, and it still runs exelent on consoles and easy to run with a controller especially with the macro system, that one guy mentioned in an above post.
Its all about how it is done. Not wheather or not if a console can run it. Square Enix proved 7 years ago it could be done right. Do we have to wait on them to do it again? Which they are working on a new mmo, same devs who created ffxi.

Yeah my wife played FFXI with me she played on 360 I played on PC. I started out on the PS2 version but once I tried the comp version that was it. Claiming and macro's are so much easier on PC there isn't hold this trigger tap left button 1-0 times then mash X or w/e button. It was ctrl 1-0 or alt 1-0. tab would cycle through targets and I forget which one but one of the F8-F10 keys would automaticaly target an NPC or Mob. Combine that with the fact that I used Beastmaster to camp and used charm to claim NM's and could summon a pet once I had claim if I needed I got auto translated threats for GM calls constantly which I found funny as hell lol.
As far as FFXI being hardcore I don't agree with this. I had my fully upgraded relic knucks for my monk which let me use Final Heaven. This wasn't hard at all just time consuming. The whole basics behind FFXI was it was a time consuming grind game. You would grind mobs for xp, grind for skill ups, grind for items, grind for crafting everything was a grind. You could solo to 75 if you wanted it just takes a lot of time and grinding. The fact that my 13 year old daughter could play it with ease kind of negates it being hardcore as well lol. It didn't require much strategy or skill it was simply grind for x hours a day to accomplish goal Z. Anyone could do it as long as they put in the time, for me that just isn't hardcore.
The console players were at a disadvantage against the PC players because of how quickly you could do something versus how quickly a console player could. The ps2 had one thing I liked that I can no longer find. It was a controller with a built in keyboard. Not like the messenger crap for 360 or the messenger crap rip off of the PS3. The mini keyboard was in the middle of the controller and the normal buttons and such on the side of that . It was the closest a console controller has come to meeting the a keyboard/mouse users need. Instead of continuing with the design however they scrapped the concept and went for a more inefficiant 360 rip which I will never understand. Anyway /rantoff lol.
On Aionsource, I started a topic about the idea, and the way it turned out is that most people voted before making their educated decision of preference. The score was roughly 2/3 nay, 1/3 yea.
Anyways, you can look up the thread if you like but the consensus that we reached (eschewing the opinions of fanboys who base it on nothing but distaste for the consoles) was that the PS3 was the ideal console to put it on. It's extremely high performance (I linked an article where Crytek said that they had an easily achievable goal of making Crysis run on the PS3 at high settings), it's a cheaper gaming solution than the average gaming PC, it has Bluetooth, which is a perfect solution for those who want to connect a keyboard and mouse wirelessly, and the PSN is totally stable and free. Considering that putting more exclusive IPs on the PS3 will be good business for both parties involved (NCSoft and Sony), there is no reason why it shouldn't be done.
I also recall Ayase saying that there were no plans to port Aion to PS3 as of that time and up until now. It is totally reasonable to not port the game right now. What NCSoft should worry right now is about finishing the base product before stressing about branching out.
I say yea for Aion on PS3. And I will defend that to the bitter end.

I was pld/war on ps2 and I claimed several of the HNM's faf/nid etc.... with 100+ people in zone. I never really felt that I was at a major disadvantage over a Comp. user. But ya there was a slight disadvantage of being on console.
I am glad you played it since your pro-PC and can speak from experiance. However the real question is Grayghost, Did you feel that the PC version of FFXI was dumbed down/cheated or hurt beyond the point that it hindered FFXI by it being on console too? Or did you enjoy playing on PC and not care about it being on console because you knew you had a slight advantage?
I am assuming you enjoyed it because I kbnow what it took to get the relic weapons.

The honest answer yes. Due to it being originaly designed for the PS2 the game can not progress as much as the players or devs would like for the other platforms simply because it is limited due to the fact that a large number of there player base are ps2 players. I mean they can't add something as simple as capes to the chars. Yes you can have them equipped but you will never see them thanx to the ps2. It just can't handle much more. Another thing consoles force are instances/zones, you won't be able to have a non instanced/zoned world with consoles. PS3 and 360 are closer to making that statement false but there not there yet. But yes I felt it was hurt by it being on ps2 because now the things that can be done aren't limited by current tech but by PS2 tech that will never see an upgrade so it will be forever a distinct line drawn in the sand for those on 360 and PC. I also felt there was a lot more they could have done but when they designed it they designed it with consoles in mind.
As for as I enjoyed I did to an extent. Usualy I can't stand linear/grind games but it was FFXI. If your eastern or western it doesn't matter almost everyone has played and enjoyed the Final Fantasy series. Besides that it's where I met my wife lol. I was killed by a ram in la'thein Plat. She saw how much I got hit for sent me a tell asking if I needed a raise. When she showed up she hoped off her choco wearing and turned out to be a mithra in an Opaline dress lol. We started chatting and duoing all the time and decided to date in real life a year or so later we were married in rl. So even if I can't stand playing FFXI anymore it will forever hold a place in my heart. I played UO for 9 years and FFXI for 5 years. The only 2 MMORPG's that have held my attention for any length of time. In FFXI though eventualy I just couldn't handle the grind anymore it wasn't fun and it just became a routine of doing stuff I have already done over and over. FFXI 75Mnk 75Blu 75Bst 75Sam 75Dnc 75War.

Ah that's my problem too, I love that game because it was my first real love of MMOs, and I try to go back to it every 4 months or so, but I just can't handle the grind anymore. ; ; When all is said and done I'd rather hop on EQ2 and quest grind. Until something better then eq2 comes along...
Anyhoo I still think MMOs will come over to consoles, however it's a matter of time. The Ps3 may be strong enough to support one, but is it popular enough to warrant such development is my worry. The 360 is by far more popular but it's older then the Ps3... I think SoE and NCsoft will try to make a game for the Ps3 and hope it doesn't flop.
I've watched Squarenix flake out on the Ps3 over the years and somehow that doesn't seem to be a good sign..
If they (consoles) could get a unified set of instructions so all games could play on any media. Its bad enough for the Dev's to write code that will work for all the diff. types of hardware and software (OS"s) for the PC media. Unify it all and the true winners will be the gamers and Dev's.

I think the PS3 could handle Aion very well. The problem is, NCSoft's target audience in Korea are PC users since not many Koreans own a PS3. FFXI was an entirely different story since more Japanese owned a PS2 over a PC. Aion isn't a blockbuster franchise(yet), like the world known Final Fantasy series. There's only 15 million PS3 owners around the world, only a tiny percentage of them are willing to play a MMO on it, therefore, it won't be enough to cover the cost to re-code it onto the PS3. Because of this, NCSoft's Blade & Soul wouldn't make enough money if it was a PS3-only title.

Firstly - how the hell are players on console going to be quick firing off masses of skills without either A some stupid skill menue that takes about 10 seconds to find and select your skill or B a magical way to tripple the number of buttons avaliable on the ps3 controller.

Its doesnt have to compare, it just gives the options for more controls on a console.
Honestly tho I doubt you could do effective gaming with that controller keyboard adaptor anyways. might as well just use the keyboard and mouse with the ps3. Atleast that seems easier to game with.
Furthermore ya the PC has more, and will always have more fansy gimicy gamepad things. Those are just user prefrance. Not every PC user chooses to use them and they just stick with the old fashion KB/Mouse. Which the ps3 can use.
It all boils down to the PS3 preformance of running the game, if an MMO is multiplatform.

I know lol was just a way to show off some of what I use for my comp lol. If games were developed with keyboard and mouse for console players and if consoles became a bit more upgradable like a PC then that would actually give the consoles a bit of an edge over the PC gamers. They would need upgradeable hard drives, upgradeable memory and upgradable graphic cards as well as maybe sound cards. Then it would in essence be pretty much a gaming PC. Instead of having to buy a new system every few years though people would buy upgrades every few years. I know the 360 could have potentialy done this, maybe even PS3, if the next Gen systems do then yeah Multi platform MMO's would be very viable and probably would run better on the consoles than on a PC since PC's have so many other programs on them that aren't needed for gaming.
Hmm i did say this on another post in this jumbled mess somewhere. Yeah you can buy add-ons and stuff but the point of console gaming is that it is easy and simple to use. The whole idea is that you don't have to go and buy a heap of accesories / upgrades like you may well have to do in pc gaming, thus this stuff may well work but just wouldn't appeal to a console gaming market.
However, again my point is that Aion on ps3 would only be unfair if players were forced to play with players on PC, who would have an advantage. If servers were kept seperate, it would become more fair. Although, you still need to sort out an easy to use method of playing it that still appeals to the console gaming audiance.
And btw just incase you guys missed it, Ayase has already confirmed there are no plans for Aion to be avaliable on the PS3.
P.S Sorry to dissapoint, but no they would not run better on next gen consoles - 360 or PS3. They were great when released, but now as ever they have fallen behind what most new next gen gaming pcs can do now. Not to say they can't handle MMOs, but they would not perform any better than a PC and probably worse.

When I said Next Gen I didn't mean 360/PS3 lol those are already current Gen now lol. Next Gen meaning the next generation. Like PS4/Xbox w/e. If they allow for upgrading and work out a deal with Nividia and ATI for console graphic cards ect then they could in fact be better than PC's as far as gaming goes because that would be there sole function. Being upgradable as well as more powerful PC has the advantage, give them the same power and the same upgradability as PC's then consoles would rule the day because they won't have any other apps running in the back ground. They wouldn't have any other processes going on besides the game leaving the full power to be utilized strictly for gaming. lol maybe let Dell help build the next Xbox because Dells are mad easy to upgrade lol.
So the real question is: Are console's getting closer to being PC's in the future or PC's shrinking to console's. Or are they both merging into common ground.....The plus for PC's is they can up the power to the system and still have good heat management.
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
Ah right I get your meaning. Well hardware wise, again a base next gen console may well be more powerful than a PC, although the chances are when it is released, PCs from that time will still be more powerful than the console.
As for upgrading consoles, yeah this is technically viable however as I said before people often choose console gaming over pc gaming to get rid of the worries when you buy a new game of "can my pc really run this?". If you can upgrade your console, games will be made that you need to upgrade and this just is not the selling point of a console.
However yeah, I do think in the future PCs and Consoles will come closer together, blending the ease of use of consoles with the far greater upgradeability and felxibility in what you can do with a PC.

The whole idea is that you don't have to go and buy a heap of accesories / upgrades like you may well have to do in pc gaming, thus this stuff may well work but just wouldn't appeal to a console gaming market.
Ya I know that ayase has stated that there are no current plans for Aion and the PS3. The thread has changed dirrection after his comment.

I really don't understand why people think MMOs should be exclusive to PCs. I played FFXI on the PS2 for 3 years and thoroughly enjoyed it. Never had one problem playing with just a controller and a keyboard (could have used a mouse, but it just wasn't needed). I currently play Guild Wars and I'm sick of playing on PC, I cant wait until PS3 has a decent MMO.
Hoping we get Aion but it just seems unlikely (to good to be true)

Well I am at a loss for words unless someone else can spark an idea.

(,,,)=^__^=(,,,)

Still doesn't compare to a comp.
They still got a ways to go to catchup with the PC community control wise lol.

------------------------------
When I said Next Gen I didn't mean 360/PS3 lol those are already current Gen now lol.
