If you liked the grouping mmo's of the past go play them
FFXI and EQ still exist.
What made you stop playing those games in the first place.
I usually hear "It takes immense time".
And thats where ole Astropuyo responds with "Now you know why games are solo-centric"
A mmo is not defined with grouping. It's being able to play, chat, and do other things around/with the community. Grouping is just one aspect and to say "Why play a mmo if you are going to solo" is beyond stupid. Yes stupid. It should be obvious.
Occasionally even the soloist parties, shows off that new loot, plays with his best friend in northern Europe while he's in the states. I am a soloist myself. I still party with those I know and trust because thats how I roll.
Why am I going to subject myself to an hour hunt with a 13 year old moron who can't play his class, keeps pulling agro and ends up wiping us...when I can do it myself and do it effectively. While this may segregate myself from a great player eventually.. I usually find social chatting etc a good deem of the mentality of the person. I usually socialize in towns, where you know the best part of mmo's come out.
It's not about grouping, it's about playing around people.
Its a fact playing WOW solo is a less rewarding experience. But at least the choice is there, which makes it better overall. Its also an easy choice to make since you can easily find groups if you bother looking. Of course you can play solo all the way to 70, BUT....
1. You lose out on the social aspects obviously.
2. You lose out on loads of content, since you can't do the multitudes of dungeons alone and all the quests associated with them.
3. You lose out on rewards, since group quests/dungeons have much better gear, looks and stats.
4. If you're on a PvP server you just lose, playing alone. If you come across a group of opposition all by your lonesome, who do you think will be questing in that area? Its not you. You'll have to leave and go elsewhere.
These 4 points should be enough of an incentive to at least try to group whenever you can.
By the way, if you want to see a solocentric MMO, go play WAR. It makes WOW seem difficult.
Firstly, WAR is only solocentric if you feel like solo-queueing for scenarios all the way to 40.
Back to the topic, it's a sad state of MMOs today. Group-centric MMOs tend to have better communities imo because you depend on your fellow player but they also tend to have smaller communities (which kills games like WAR) because who wants to have to sit and wait for enough people to play the game?
Solo-friendly games like WoW give you the ability to advance your character on your own time, but also breed complete a$$hats because they can do/say whatever they want and know that they don't need the community in order to play the game.
