I vote Ghosts and Goblins. Honorable mention to any Castlevania game before Symphony of the Night (except Castlevania 2, because it had a password and Dracula was a pushover if you used the diamond weapon). And I'll also throw in the original Super Mario Brothers...oh yes, that game got fiendish the further you went.
Games today are indeed easier, some of those old games would have you actually freaking out and hurling the controller at the TV. I remember my mom forcing me to go outside and play after I lost my last life falling down a pit. Those old platform games were fond of blasting your character backwards when they took damage. Ninja Gaiden was the worst of those, so many areas custom designed to drop Ryu off a mountain if he took a hit in the wrong area.

have any of you ever beaten Batlletoads without cheating using pause on an emulator? I haven't.
Who can beat Battletoads wothout cheating? you have no chance with only few hearts and a limited continue.
