just as the title states, this is true with little to no consequence when dieing in the rvr lakes or in the scenarios.
in some games where there was pvp , most people would not dare compete in the pvp because the pvp was risky, eq , you die the enemy could then loot your corpse , sell it or use the items you took
in others not only a looted corpse would happen but you have to start all over again from lvl 1 because the charecter would be worthless,
and in others they had it a little more fair , where you kept your armor and items, but the gold you carried would be looted, or item that was on you could be looted.
or in others your armor would be damaged and then a need for armor repairs would take place
in warhammer, you dont lose anything when you die, no xp, no renown, no gold, no armor, or need to repair armor
and the consequences for dieing were not there unless you consider holding your team back from doing its job so that the other forces could be better off in taking control of a certain area.
is there really any reason to fear dieing ? no
when i needed to get back to a camp so i could get my reward from pqs influence or to buy armor , i would simply kill myself with a bunch of mobs on me and that was that, bam i was back .
i would never do that in eq or daoc cause then id have to pay for it one way or another.

Wow! Really? I never noticed this! Thank you for bringing it to our attention -- we'd all been unaware of it.
I mean, it's weird. You'd think a game whose entire success rests on people playing the PVP portion of it would make sure that PVP was incredibly frustrating and difficult and that any loss was extremely painful and would cost you hours of time spent grinding in PVE. Nothing could make people love PVP more than that, righ?
I just don't get it. What WAS Mythic thinking? How could easy, fun, low-risk PVP encourage people to PVP more? How would it get people who normally don't like PVP due to bad memories of UO gang-ganks and EQ corpse runs to try PVP again? I don't see how.
You ought to tell Mythic this. I don't think they're aware of this fatal flaw. Maybe there's still time for them to add a feature where, if you die in PVP, your character is deleted and you're charged 100 dollars.
Your ideas, Lizard_SF, are beyond revolutionary. You should work for Mythic!
One suggestion though, if I may edit an already-perfect plan, is that instead of simply having your character deleted and being charged on your credit card for $100, that they also deactivate your account (although still charging $15/month that cannot be cancelled) and require you to buy a new game, create a new account, and pay an addition $15 a month.
I just realized that it is because they did not implement any of these features that I am no longer having fun in PvP. Only if they do this will PvP in this game be fun.
Edit: By the way, I guarantee it that if Mythic added a penalty for death, the OP would be running back to WoW PvP...
I love how the carebears always respond to this topic the same way. Since they cant fathom that a death penalty adds excitement and immersion to some people's experience...they always do this exageration response where they say lol maybe we should attach car batteries to our nipples and get shocked whenever we died!
Sorry but OP is actually correct.
WAR is a pvp game right? Yet their death penalty is a joke and shows how silly it was that there is even one at all. When you die, you rez at a graveyard and have your health reduced by 10%. However when you rez, there is a healer about 2 feet away from you that will take this penalty off you for about .000001% of your gold.
Also, when you kill someone in a big pvp fight, especially open RVR...it doesnt mean much. They are back in your face at 100% effectiveness pretty fast.
There is no fear of dieing....they shouldnt even call it death.
The example of people suiciding because sometimes it is the fastest way to travel is a prime example of how softcore and carebearish games have become. ESPECIALLY IN A PVP CENTERED GAME!!!!
Hell even WoW had corpse runs as a penalty. As well as armor repairs...better than WAR that has NOTHING.'
You guys may like carebear handholding, but others like to feel excitement and actual risk v reward situations.

They are called FPS.
There are lots of people who want a quality 3D fantasy UO-style MMO and once it is released, I assure you, it will have more subs than WAR.
why can there be only one? why cant there be a game like war where ppl can jump in and have some pvp without having to worry about losing everything? and why cant there be a game like darkfall that is more hardcore in that you can full loot and there are no safe zones. i dont understand any of you. you thing that there can only be one type of game and it HAS to cater to you. your not the only person on this earth
Sorry if you do not like it play something else like i did.

edit: b/c my biggest gripe is nobody wants to do much of anything but the quick fix pvp stuff
Why does "PVP Game" imply or demand "Harsh death penalty"? This assumption seems without merit.
Yes, WAR is a Carebear game. Big whoop-de-friggin-doo. It's also a FUN game, at least for me, and that's all that matters.
There's Shadowbane, there's EVE, there may be Darkfall. Enjoy.
WAR is what it is, and isn't likely to change -- if anything, it looks like patches will make getting back into the fight even faster, no more tedious runs across half the zone to get back to the keep. So posting here about WAR is "carebear" is about as useful as going to the Microsoft boards and asking when they're going to open-source Windows.

Yup very good point.
I can see why people want the carebear themepark games, i dont fault them for it, though i will call them caebears. But it seems like they dont have the ability to think that others like pvp with consequences for reasons beyond wanting to be dirty griefers.
I recently quit WAR. Main reason was I would log in and there would be no reason to play. I just found myself asking "why" too often. Scenarios are a bore, may as well play WoW. Guild runs PVE instances but i didnt join for PVE. And the opn RVR is a ghost town unless we do it as a guild...and even then the lack of pvp consequences makes it a snore fest.
That being said...my first keep defense was one of the best pvp experiences ive had in mmos....but it got stale very fast. The idea is great and potential is there, but Mythic dropped the ball so far. It still didnt top the heartpounding that occured the first time I tracked someone into a asteroid belt in EVE for the first time, dropped in on them and had a 1v1 fight that resulted in me destroying their ship and all their mods. The stuff i looted was worth more than my whole ship. It was a great feeling knowing that i came close to losing my ship.

Cool. Glad you enjoy it. I dont think anyone, at least me anyways, is faulting you for liking the game, or faulting WAR for appealing to the carebear crowd. It is just how it is.
I dont think OP needed to make a new thread on this topic, but he did, so here we are.
Its just some people like to argue that it isnt carebear, when it is, which is again fine. Or get offended when people call it carebear.
Nice to see there are people like you who can say yea its carebear, and i enjoy it. Because thats what playing MMOs is all about, having fun right? It just irks me when people cant fathom that some of us choose to have our enjoyment with a more pvp centric game with penalties. We are just labeled as griefers and the scum of the community.

FPS requires "twitch" reflexes which I lack, and there is no persistent world, leveling, or non-PVP activity. Not really comparable. IMO, the knowledge you have lost is usually "punishment" enough; I hate losing.
And, yeah, let us know how that Darkfall thing works out for you. Should be amusing.

Don't worry, I still got L2(Those are true Massively Multiplayer Online keep sieges who feel epic, WAR's castles are smaller than Halaa, how the hell you can call those things castles is beyond me) and EVE(still a great game. They went from 0 to hero and showed that indies can do great stuff. Mythic got EA's money AND EA's mentality to get as much money as they can, resulting in a boring WoW clone).
This line of reasoning is sheer genius. I have an even better idea along these lines. Mythic should just remove death all together? Why bother having it at all if unbridled Pvp is the only goal, might as well let the players kill each other ad infinitem. (or would that be ad nasuem?)
Problem solved.....

I love how every time a new MMO that isn't FFA PvP with full corpse looting comes along, the guys that go for that nich playstyle come out of the woodwork and whine about it. Most MMO players don't enjoy having hours or days of their time flushed down the crapper every time they get killed. Because of this, big budget games will always cater to "carebears" rather than hardcore FFA PvPers, and no game with full corpse looting will ever be more sucessful that EVE. You've lost this battle. Get over it.
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.

Well it appears the only one arguing that there is a battle is you. Defensive about something? Most of us wiedos comming out of the woodwork dont care how successful the carebear games are. Unlike you we dont use sub numbers as a means of measuring quality, nor care about how many people play as long as the server is full. We just care that we have fun in the game.
I for one play both, and enjoy both. Though more intensive pvp games i like way more.
And can I borrow your magic 8 ball that tells you that no game in the future of MMOs will have more subs than EVE?

Who the hell cares about the subs if the game is fun anywyay?

My bet is on ignorance.

I'm basing this observation mainly on the past history of FFA PvP in MMOs. If you've been playing them as long as I have, you've seen that game design fall flat on it's face quite a few times. UO would have folded after EQ launched if they hadn't added Trammel, for example. Given the history of true FFA PvP in MMOs, the sucess of EVE is actually pretty stunning. It's the WoW of that genre in terms of popularity.
I think having games available that cater to a diversity of playstyles is awesome. Having choices is good for everyone. I'd actually be happy to be proven wrong when it comes to it. I'm really rooting for DF, for example. I'd love to see it do even better than EVE in terms of subs. However, I'm not holding my breath.
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.

If you want a nazi game that rips your head off when you die and steals all your money, then you are at the complete wrong place bud.
There is a reason there are no real penalties. To be able to get back into the fray right away. It's WAR, you are supposed to fight constantly and not run around like a headless chicken looking for your dead body or go to town and repair your broken gear. Live with it. Games are different and not always centered around YOU.

Welcome to the instant expresso "kiddie" gamer generation. The average attention span only held togather by the duration since the last dose of ritalin...
If you need a laugh and are so inclined, games with a "start up" like battlefield 2142 are fun. On the "older" " more mature" servers often have 30 seconds to 1 minute toilet or ciggie break where the kiddies can scream and wail how long it all is.
I blame Mcdonalds and global warming...
You will have alot of players that want a harsh penalty system that love online games like Eve Online and Ultima Online. Thats why alot of these players are banking on Darkfall to be the next BIG Online game for the truley hardcore players that love consequences for PvPing.
Me, I played Eve Online for 2 years (casually) and absolutely loved it, nothing could match its system. However when you play a game for so long, you definetly start to burn out and start looking elsewhere for another fix. This game defiinelty requires a guild effort if you want to succeed and noth solo for the faint at hearts.
I love WAR, yeah its no Eve Online, but then again as someone stated, who cares if its a carebear game, as long as your having fun.
PS. also pretty harsh penalty as one stated, you die, you pay 100 bucks.. LOL .. I will stay clear of that online game especially the way the economy is here in the USA.
