I want to play a powerful feeling mage

shohenshohen Member UncommonPosts: 61

Are there any games out there that actually let you do this? Most seem to be archers with slightly different graphics with a few more tricks. I know balance makes it hard to make too much difference between classes/ professoins.. God I hate balance!

I'm fine with pve games that dont think every class should be as strong as all the others. Make a mage ultra weak at the start, make them work harder then everyone else, but in the end it should be worth while.

Even if they're not hugely more powerful, I'd like to find a game where magic is something a lot more exciting and less common (due to being difficult to obtain).

I think you're looking for a single player game. It's easy to let you become very powerful in a single player game, compared to all the NPC's. And then the game is over.

But in a massive multiplayer game, it's impossible to let you be more powerful than all your fellow players. Why? Because then they will all pick the same class as you, if that is the uber class, and then they'll be equally as powerful as you, which means you won't feel uber anymore.

What if you make it really, really hard to be an uber mage? Then people that dont' want to work as hard will play something else like a fighter right? And you'll be very weak at first, but later on you'll be much more powerful than the fighter, right?

Wrong, because then the fighter will think the game is not properly balanced, and quit the game. Oh ratz, I spent all this time leveling (or gaining skillz) for this fighter, but now I find he's wimpy in the end compared to the mage. I don't want to start all over and level up a mage. I quit.

After the recent update, arcane mage in WOW is pretty over-power with really high burst damage.

YOu may want to check it out. There is no promise he won't be nerfed though.

I agree, Ele was my favorite class in Guild Wars.

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
    Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
    Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
    Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

Wizards in EQ2 were smooth overpowered at launch but I think they got struck with the nerfbat. Was an AOE monster

Fire Elementalist in guild wars would get my vote. I guess burn wizards in WAR might get a mention too. Those guys are gonna get nerfed me thinks.

I agree with this.  I see arcane mages tearing up bgs, taking on 2-3 people at once.  Although I heard at level 80, they begin to even out a lot.

Somebody also mentioned the brightwizards in war.  They are the most dominate class currently and are soon to get nerfed, but I bet they will still reign supreme.

The best MMO for powerful casters was Everquest.  They could do all kinds of neat things which made the melee jelous.  This was a result of EQ following D&D 1st/2nd Edition classes pretty closely.  Mages started very weak with those rules, but ended up being the most powerful class by the end of the game.  These days all classes are balanced for PvP.  It used to be balanced around group PvE.

    Bright Wizards in WAR.

Want to one/two-shot equal level mobs? Want to 3-4 hit equal level players? I'd expect a nerf soon, cause they are just extremely OP currently.

Demonologist and the Herald of Xotli in Age of Conan are pretty cool and are fairly powerful. The Hox is more like a mage hybrid class between mage and melee.

Ihmotepp - I do understand what you're saying, I'm not looking to be the uber powerful mage, but a mage that has that powerful feeling to it. I say I hate balance because so many games and classes get destroyed because the developers are trying to balance things, make everyone feel equal.

I always felt AC was doing this right, at least originally. The mage skills were very powerful, but it took experimentation and a lot of effort to get that powerful.

Well, I've been drinking and its even more difficult to focus my thoughts than normal.. It would be cool to be able to develop a mage though methods not directly related to killing creatures. But at this point, I unfortunately won't be able to be much more specific !

Anyways, thanks for the suggestions, I'll be taking a look at those games.. Not a big fan of wow, guild wars, eq or eq2 anymore, though i did play all of them for a period.

    later!

Warlock is totally underpower, comparatively, after the new patch and the upcoming WOTLK.

In EQ there was a spell where you could make a giant eyeball, and move it around to see other places in the game without risking getting your mage hurt. It wasn't really that useful, but it was a very cool spell.

In D&D there was something called "cantrips". They were spells that did no combat damage. There was, for example, the magic mouth spell. You could put a spell on an inanimate object and make it talk under certain conditions. Players would do things like put a magic mouth spell on their purse, so if a thief stole it, it would yell "Help, I'm being stolen! Stop Thief!" and other sillyness like that.

Spells like those make for a fun and interesting game.

I thought that Loremasters in LOTRO were interesting, in that they were more designed to battle close-up with mobs rather than from distance.  I don't know if this classifies them as powerful, but they can take more of a beating than the usual mage can in most MMOGs.

Their crow pets are pretty terrible though, I don't like crows much in real life, mostly because of their 'CAW!'s, and they managed to import the annoyingness to the pets in LOTRO.. that pretty much killed the Loremaster class for me.  But they are more hardy than most mages in MMOG's.

I don't know if this really helps too much.

Balance is ALSO very important in PvE games, because certain classes won't be played if they get too weak, and the game will only suffer from a less versatile class spectrum to an extent that breaks the game or certain parts of it.

Mages ARE always pretty powerful if played right. The concept that a mage is dead meat the moment a dps-guy gets his hands on him is a very tradtitional and very proven concept. Take Bright Wizards of WAR as an example. They do unbelievable amounts of damage but get three shotted by a clever melee DPS with a "silence"-skill.

They feel, and are, powerful as long as you don't want to be the "storm the front" invincible power mage.

You should also not be able to get uber-powerful. While this may be less of a problem in a very solo centered game, it sure IS one in any game that requires teamplay or PvP. Equality is everything here. Now before anyone starts to scream "communist", you probably think about why there are no hydraulic bats in baseball or why you can't use an assault rifle at the olympic 50 meter shootings...

Do me a favor and actually report back when they do get nerfed.

Because I read from Mythic they are not getting nerfed but a bunch of people INSIST OVER AND OVER they will. Just because you may want them to be, or expect them to be nerfed doesnt mean they ever will in fact get hit with the nerf bat.

If you actually want to have a inteligent discussion on the matter go on over to warhammeronline forums and post in the Bright Wizard forums.

There are hundreds of frost mage videos on youtube. Amazing when you consider that that's one one branch of the three branched talent tree.

Edit: dam, here's another good mage

With the wide range of spells available in DDO I think the mage classes become pretty powerful in the late game.

    Spell list

Of course, that was always the case in the pen and paper game as well.

The only MMO currently that has classes that ARE powerful and give you the powerful feeling - is Vanguard.

They are designed in that way - so dont expect any nerfs. Puts a smile on your face when you can blast a bunch of mobs and not feel gimped (chasing the next level carrot) like 99% of the MMOs out there.

Guild Wars is fabulous with its classes and their ability to have unlimited sub-classes and thousands of skill builds.

If you wish to get unique - and not worry about balance - make a mage in City of Heroes/Villians! And yes you can be quite creative and powerful in CoH/V.
