Group PvE doesn't require class balance. Solo PvE does to an extent because this allows certain classes to solo where others can't. Take EQ which was a group PvE game. Certain classes could not solo, but they were eccential in groups. Tanks would be one of those classes. Rogues would be another because they were steady DPS with backstabs. Most magic users could solo and do a lot of neat stuff, but their role in a group was no more important then those classes that could not solo.
The EQ2 mages in all their variants are still quite powerful. Though the visual "power" is not quite up to date. The greatest "impact" you can do, both in terms of damage numbers as in terms of visual power is the Bright Wizard of WAR, though he he VERY vulnerable should anyone come close, so you do a lot of damage but also die a lot.
You could look out how that new Runekeeper class in LOTRO will be.
