Looks suspiciously like a spiritual successor to UO, which has been ruined, except on a few free servers. Even those are fairly rotten.
One can only hope.
Well, considering the devs have been quoted multiple times saying that UO, if any game, is the game that inspires them if any. And that in their FAQ they have:
Q: Is Mortal Online comparable to any other game out there?
A: It’s never easy to compare your work to others. The core team comes from the beta days of Ultima Online and wants to build a PvP game in the same spirit but with today’s technology. Some of the very first MMORPG’s had features we have always seen as primary for the genre, and we are surprised to see that so few have developed games based on those features since that time. In short, we find many of today’s MMORPG’s impressive and fun, but see most of them as “cooperative PvE” games with only rudimentary PvP functionality. This makes us even more determined to see our vision come true in Mortal Online.
I'd say you could safely move past hope, lol. Will it be an exact replication of UO? No. If all goes as SV plans, however, it should feel somewhat familiar to UO. Now, if you're talking pre-Trammel specifically, well, don't get your hopes up. MO's population will be 99.9% filled with people who want to PvP. People that want to "go red" won't have the easy targets they did up until Trammel, which is how it should be in my opinion.
"Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..."

Didn't read that chunk. And I was hoping for pre-trammel. At least then the murderers had penalties. Trammel killed a vital aspect of the game - that you needed to watch your back. I'm sorry, I was trapped ten years ago. Where was I?

I'm not sure where you get you don't need to watch your back in MO, lol. You still do. There just isn't going to be a bunch of people who don't want to PvP to pick on. *shrug* Going to have to work for that red status against people who fight back, which can be argued that that is a penalty in itself.
If you are interested in a read on red penalties, here is a link to a thread started by the head hancho on the MO project about the subject.
