I wish I had the time to play Vanguard , when I subbed for a couple of months I really liked it.I especially liked the diplomacy part of it , that was a nice touch. It felt more like a living world. I'll have to try and get rod of my Eve / lotro obsession
It truly is a shame that Vanguard was not executed better than it was. So many good ideas and such a grand world but so many faults and failures.
If only SOE could see the game's potential and put a larger dev team on it. Perhaps a re-release would help jumpstart more players.

If its been a year since you last played, the game has come far. The small dev team are doing wonders and set themselves very big targets.
Whilst I agree the original execution was awful (due to lack of money, microsoft pulling out etc), things have improved a lot.
They are also using the community to test things as much as possible on the test server, which is helping deliver more game improvements quicker and getting them right the first time (or near as possible). I applaud what they are doing, since the community seem to have a real input into the game design. Of course there are always some who disagree but its very very cool what they are doing.
Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS) Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve
Agreed, they are doing very well. I am more impressed that I am actually crafting, never been big into creating stuff vs pvping but that said, it is quite fun.
I played this game for a long time, off and on since launch. Basically playing it whenever my life schedule would allow me.
All I have to say about the population is that whenever I wanted to find a group for something, it wasn't too hard to do so. I absolutely cherished the population, (Seradon, can't remember the server I had before merge) it made the game world feel believable, even in it's scope and sheer magnitude I would still see people from time to time which is how it should be. I don't want to travel this great expanse of land, as an adventurer and seeing hundreds of leet speak adventurers running around ruining the immersion 110%
To say the population is dead is just a blatant, trollish lie. Maybe for the PvP server, which is acceptable in most regards, but I had a hard time finding a plot for my house on one of the many islands you can choose. So I picked one that I thought would be 100% quiet and placed a modest house on it. Well, the island wasn't dead after all, because when I went to the 'town center' there was a bunch of people chatting, crafting and doing whatever all out in front of their player homes. This is a remote island mind you.
I found a good guild and I raided the Ancient Port Warehouse when it came out. Enjoyed crafting and exploring the diplomacy aspect, then I wrapped it all up and left. I felt that I've seen all worth seeing, which took over a year. It goes into my mind as one of the most memorable MMOs I've ever played. Sailing up a river in a boat that I worked to craft, with my friend on a journey to explore a remote part of an island, just to see what we could find. Trekking up a steep mountain to see what was on the top, only to find out it wasn't a mountain at all, but a barren volcano that housed a monstrous colony of birdmen. Many things that are just spectacular to experience, especially with a friend.
This game is a good game, this game is not dead. If you're looking for a breath of fresh air, if you want to be immersed into a world that is worthy of play, then try the game.
..and to note as its been said previously - the community is a good one. It's light, but it definitely stacks one of the best game populations I've ever experienced.
My dream mmo: I appear (either in 1st person or 3rd) in some mountain area. There is no one around and all I have on my person is a loin cloth. My stanima starts to drop because I am hungry. As I wonder around the mountain lush with trees and brush, I come upon a stream. I take a drink of water from the stream and notice fish swimming about. I try grabbing at the fish on for the fish to swim through my fingers. So I look around for something to help me catch the fish. I break off a tree branch from a near by tree. The end of the stick is in no condition to spear a fish, so I find some stones to break and shave the edge of the stick into a spear. It takes a while to get the fish but I catch it. I can eat the fish raw, but I might get sick. (gonna long story short this up) I make a fire, cook the fish and eat it causing my stanima (and maybe things like strength) return to normal depending on how hungry i was. So this goes on and maybe i fashion things together and build a home and find other people along the way. we find more people and end up having a village. that grows. (history happens) you die when you die. Maybe even of old age. you can have kids or have some point were if you die and have a family you can start off as one of your kids. etc.
That is how I wish an mmo would be some day.
I haven't personally played it, but I believe the game A Tale in the Desert is a lot like you describe here. From what a friend told me and what I have read on their forums, ATitD may be the clearest example of a sandbox game out there.
I want to know honestly, at peak times, how many people are gona be online on the most populated server? I'm really interested in playing this game but when I first tried it was too buggy, then I tried again after the fixes and the world was too empty. What are the odds of me finding groups consistently at lower levels
ok well on my server (Seradon (i think)) during my primetime (Australia) i can get into a group fairly quickly (within 20 minutes) and be off adventuring. As far as getting groups in lower levels. before lvl 15 you really shouldnt be looking for groups. groups really kick in around 18 and during US prime time (i have played a bit at this time) there are usually 2-3 groups on LFG. Of course if you get into a decent guild or have lots of friends you can almost bypass LFG and get a solid group up and running quickly. As far as population goes. Its a big world so dont expect to see many people wandering around, however at both prime times you tend to see about triple the amount of groups actually in the dungeons (so the groups are full and no longer need LFG) than on LFG (those that still need a few players before they start).
as for bugs, there are a few here and there but its quite playable, The lag was crazy when i first joined and now i only lag in big cities and only when they load (my graphics are on max)
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds -Solid non level based game -Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

I've played ATiTD about 3 times and I have to say, it DOES get close to what I want, but a game needs combat.
Here's to hoping someone comes out with a survival MMO.
