Hi there.

After SOE's complete hash of SWG I always wanted to experience a new Star Wars themed mmo from a different company.

I must admit I was excited when i first heard the rumours surrounding this game. I'm quite grownded though and never get too hyped up over a new mmo. Im too cynical :)

I know this game is still in its infancy and so many things could change from now until release but after reading the latest PC GAMER magazine I'm not sure this game is gonna be for me.

Heres a quote from the preview of SWTOR. "They say it's possible to solo the whole game"

Dont know about the rest of you but if thats the case I will not be playing this game :)

There are not to many MMO's out there that this does not hold true for. Most games you can solo. The question is in what ways is it possible? WoW for intance you could solo all the way to max level but that requires a lot of grinding but still possible. However you won't be soloing many instances unless you are well past the recommended lvl range but you can only do that for so long. EQII is soloable but again, same as above.

    It's how you view it.

Just because you can solo the whole game doesn't mean you have to.  While I hope it would be more of a grouping game, a lot of soloers complain.  Thats why I still play a game that pretty much makes you group, yes you can solo in the game but the EXP you get is not as much if you grouped.

I definatly agree with ur comparison to WoW. I've often said that game can be solod to a certain degree (and i play it). I guess I was hoping for something more. I really enjoyed SWG's need for talking to people :)

I can understand tho that todays casual mmo market does require the solo factor i'm just hoping you cant SOLO the WHOLE game. You cant even do that in WoW :)

    /Agreed.

I prefer a game that can be solo'd. Why? Because the majority of MMO players nowadays are asshats that have no idea how to play their char/class properly. Ya know, the ones who play healer/ranged fighters, but decide they need to be in the front of the groups to play the tank? Or the ones that agro every mob then run back to their group who is still fighting the previous mob. How about the ones that constantly  hoard all the loot for themselves. Or whine n whine cause they need XX loot n please give it to em?

Gone are the days of just throwing together a group n that group goes out n has a fun time exploring/hunting/questing. So may as well have the game soloable so you can go on your own rather than waiting for the asshat group.

i am pretty sure they didn't say the whole game was going to be able to be solo'd, in fact, i remember them saying alot of the game will be soloable (like almost all mmorpgs), except for the group content

I'm sensing we will have about a trillion more of these before this game launches in a year or two from now.

Hey I'm only going on what I read in PC GAMER. I'm sorry if I offended you and your love for SWOTR. I was just hoping to get other peoples opinions on an MMORPG game that from what I've read maybe possible to solo.

Alot of people were hoping this wasnt going to be a WoW clone in a star wars skin. And from the quote "THEY SAY ITS POSSIBLE TO SOLO THE WHOLE GAME" just made me think its going in a direction people didnt want it to go in.

Like I said I only know what I read. The preview i read was an official one.

I don't see how being able to solo a game would be game breaking, every game out there gives you the choice to bypass group content if you so wish.

And that's the problem with alot of them games out atm, some games are too easy.

I miss the great interaction with other players from games like EQ and FFXI but nowadays people barely even speak unless they absolutely have too which upsets me in a way.

    MMOs that I'm waiting for:

    Aion
    SGW
    TCoS

Being a huge grouping fan in the MMORPG I can honestly tell you right now grouping in my opinion makes things easier than soloing alot of content. It is not the fact that grouping is better because it is harder. Grouping is better than soloing because it is more engaging! You get to work together and that takes more thought than working by yourself in most cases.

I hope the majority of this game is solo. With some battle scenerios that might allow large numbers of players. If you take on friends then the group shouldn't exceed 6-10 characters..droids..pets..included.  The whole idea of a star wars mmo...imo...should not only be the feel you are actually  in the SW galaxy...but that you are playing a hero role...feel like a hero...or an essential cog in the wheel of whatever faction you belong .  Sure..if you take part in a 25 man raid of A Hutt Palace...you can high-five eachother and slap yourself on the back...but i'd rather feel like a singular Han Solo(no pun intended)  type than a clone.(yes I know its old republic)

yeah so what if they say its possible to solo?! do u not have a mind of ur own to choose not to solo? whats with all the damn haters, people who hate change

most of the MMO releases we are going to see in the future are going to follow the same formula and be "the one that will beat WoW". I am almost retiring from MMOs. I will try Vanguard because I never played it, and also will try Darkfall when it's out. If DF doesn't deliver or never release, I'm out for good.

    From the official FAQ(www.swtor.com/info/faq#348):

    "Can I play alone?

While there are some tasks that cannot be completed without the cooperation of others, the majority of the game can be accomplished by playing alone."

It is going to be set up like every other recent major MMO.  You don't have to group if you don't want to, but you'll miss out on some of the content if you don't.

The huge problem with forced grouping is that once the initial burst of new players ends, the straggles that come along later would quit in frustration because there wouldn't be enough people for them to group with, which means they wouldn't be able to play the game.  Look at WoW's heavy to full load servers.  The newbie zones are pretty much empty, since almost everyone is doing end game content.  Those servers are bursting with players, but if the game forced players to group to advance, no new players would be able to play the game.

Yeah...it will likely be like this for a while to come. Hopefully we will see some unique quality games come round...a lot of niche gaming..with a few industry leaders emerging, hopefully with different genres....Unfortunately...or fortunately if you prefer...Blizzard...perhaps still WOW... will probably be strong.

I hope they stick to it, nothing worse than grouping up with a bunch of 12 year olds or teenie boppers that act like infants.

I prefer the simple choice to solo if i want too.

I still remember the pain of waiting hours in Anarchy Online, to form a decent group.

  • adamch29adamch29 Member UncommonPosts: 71

Solo option is good for people that start playing the game  after everyone else.  There are few games where the early levels are packed with people wanting to group.  That includes Wow and WAR and EQ2.  If you didn't have the ability to solo you would be screwed.

I hope this game will have a great solo option like SWG did. i loved it before they did all the changes. I guess we'll have too wait and see

  • ValecruizValecruiz Member UncommonPosts: 21

What it will come down to in terms of how the players chooses to go through the game is what fanbase SW:TOR draws in.  We'll definately get the SW fanatics first (No disrespect meant there), who I feel will be more inclined to group to capture more of the SW feel.

Then we have the more reasonable players who will come in from fading games like AoC, LoTRO, ect.  Although probably few, these players will, like the others, want to group to regain that sense of bonding the original MMO's use to capture.

And then, we sadly have the childish WoW fanbase.  Now, I'm not saying all WoW players are like that, nor will every WoW-refugee act in the way I will describe, but more often than not their fanbase has become such:  they will try to grind-fest their way through the game, get to level cap, form "Uber" raid guilds and gloat over the others with their epic lootz.  It has been shown, time and time again as more of these people left WoW for the greener pastures.  And of course, like all subjects, there will be people who are a mixture of these player types

In the end, how you level and experience the game won't fall upon BioWare's shoulders, they're simply creating the story and content for us to explore.  Whomever wishes to make SWTOR a more group-orientated experience will have to put forth the initiative themselves.  It will fall to all of us to continue actively search for the groups we seek and hope we have a playerbase that is mature enough to help out.

All I can say in terms of my own opinion is I hope this game does work out; I loved KOTOR and I see no reason why this should turn out badly.
