No matter what your prefenence is, No matter how many excuses you make, PvE is the most popular and the Biggest sold. Numbers don't lie. Even if you don't like the Game, I don't think any one will ever top WoW. That game has made history. I am not a Fanboy..... I don't even play it, But its HUGE.. And what is it? Made for PvE with a splash of PvP to attract some of that crowd too. Others Claim AoC is a Pure PvP game....Far from the truth. PvE servers TOP the PvP servers on this Game... the PvE is the only aspect of the game that Works and is keeping the game alive.
I'm not trying to bash PvP. Just pointing out the facts. PvE Sells that's why it's made.
I would like to see both types come out so every one can enjoy them, but its all a money thing and that's why there is so little PvP. That's just the Truth.
Pve will always be far more popular then pure pvp even tho if you have pvp mmo's like AoC and WAR that are casual themepark games with no risk.
When pvp is free for all with risk like full loot or lost of item and xp or stats it will be even more nich.
Darkfall will be very nich game far to hard for most first its a hardcore free for all pvp game with full loot on top of that its sandbox game and pve is extremely hardcore to.
Only a few will go for such games.
Even when pve is rather hardcore it still could be easely populated by a large numbers.
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009..... In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.
I would enjoy a good mix of both if done properly. I like PvE for the story and the epic encounters (dragons, gods, mythical beasts) but I also like the freedom of open PvP as it adds realism. The only thing I don't like is PvP without rules. God forbid you died in AoC before they implemented punishment. Spawn>die>spawn>die. /logout roll new character and try not to die.
Anyways, my vote goes to PvP, mostly because I think people like interacting with other people, and, with Web 3.0 in mind, that's where things are going. If WoW went ALL PvP, in the EvE Online sense, I think it'd be very, very popular.
1. I don't need PvP to interact with others in an MMO, I do that all the time without having to deal with ganking (asshats are present in all gaming enviroments)
2. Which would be the reason the vast majority of WoW servers are NOT pvp. The demand is simply not there.

I was recently checking out Capcom's multiplayer RPG Monster Hunter 3 coming out in March which is going to be available outside of Japan on a console for the first time.
It's structure is somewhat similar to Guild Wars but unlike Guild WArs it only offers PVE. Sure Guildwars offers pve but that was something it was never known for and as a result we look at it as a PVP only game.
This got me thinking in general if PVE only mmos are better than pvp only mmos.
The only real PVP only mmo I know of is Planetside and it has never done as well as Monster Hunter 1,2.
If you think about all offline games are pve and my gut tells me if pvp was an attractive enough option we would see it alot more on console and pc
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
I like PVE way more than PVP, partly due to the fact that I suck at PVP lol. I only work at one speed, my speed lol, and PVP is just too fast paced for me, I don't like being rushed. And I think MMOs that are more PVP focused are just trying to tap the Xbox Live overly competitive audiance reserve.
I have a grudge against PvEers. It seems like every time there is a pvp update, or patch in a game, the PvEers will storm the forums protesting it. Even if it doesn't really effect their gameplay, they just can't stand to see devs spending time on PvP when they could be adding a new pet for whatever pet class.
Of course I'm just generalizing and know that all PvEers don't do that, but all PvPers don't speak in leet speak either.
There are tons of PvE mmos, let us PvPers have one new one.
Pure PvP isn't as popular a ruleset as pure PvE. Most games try to provide both, so that they can get the large PvE crowd and at least some of the much smaller PvP crowd. The PvP crowd is vocal on the internet, but greatly outnumbered in the playing community by PvE players, really.
Pure PvP is not as popular because they are not being made as much. It has nothing to do with peoples preferences. People are not choosing to play PvP games because there are virtually none to choose from. It really is that simple.
Also the only PvP most people have experienced is in PvE games and as your average person is a short sighted fuckwit then obviously they cry "PvP cant work! It only leads to ganking!" because thats what happened in the PvE "level-based" games that were never designed with PvP in mind.
So you say the PvP crowd is vocal on the internet but greatly outnumbered by the PvE players in the gaming community? Hmmm......so this "gaming community" you're referring to......how many people are in it exactly? Give me some numbers and show me where you found your information from. Show me how many of them want PvP games and how many of them want PvE games. Oh whats that you're saying? You made it up? You pulled the statement out of you're arse? Yeah I thought so.
People are not "choosing" to play PvE games. They are playing whatever the best games the games companies make......and they are predominantly making PvE games because they are easier to make. The PvP aspects just get added on as an afterthought.
PVE would ... people just like to be in control of thier encounters, and not have to worry about getting jumped everytime they turn the corner. this is a casual gamer era where people don't want to be on thier toes or have to pay attention to thier surrounding. they just want to skip through thier quest while chatting with thier guildies about "omg did you see the new britney video?"
And their is nothing wrong with them wanting to do so. What makes you think that they must somehow provide you entertainment by being easy gank targets just so you can have fun.
Let's be honest, any player who is fighing a PVE mob is at a huge disadvantage if suddenly attacked by a player, and its a mechanic I despise. Even though I play hardcore pvp games, this is a mechanic I will rarely take part of unless the other person is a member of designated "enemy" guild. (and no, not every player goes on that list)
You're angry that you can't interupt other people who are otherwise having fun to get your rocks off.
Call me a carebear, I am, I rarely fight, which is strange because I play all hardcore pvp games. I take a lot of pleasure in finding ways to avoid/evade/escape the gank squads and I will fight for good cause, such as a designated war or action. But random ganking...meh, no interest, especially if the target is helpless to fight back.
Not saying everyone else has to follow my lead, we all play the games they way we enjoy them, and I'm willing to concede that a pure pve game is much more popular than a pure pvp game. I prefer hybrids I guess, and I feel DAOC was one of the better mixes of the two genres.
EVE is another good mix in my option , which is why I guess I'm playing it right now.

I have never seen that, But if people ARE doing that,,, It's Stupid. ANY enhancement to a Game PvP or PvE, doesnt matter as long as it helps. No complaints here.
I voted PvE, just because I find PvP dull. A little team vs team arena style PvP isn't too bad, if the teams are balanced, but open world PvP seems pointless to me.
That is the best thing i like about Dark age of Camelot and Warhammer, The Realm Vs Realm, It's like the best of both worlds. You can PvE all you want and defend your Realm in the RvR.
Pure PVE would be way more popular to mainstream crowds, because it's easy to just go out and do, no worrying about finding the right level person for you, because in PVE the creatures generally advance in toughness as you advance through areas.
The problem is that alot of the people on this board are the vocal pvp minority. If there truly was a market for pure pvp, don't you think someone would have tried? Game publishers aren't idiots, they will create a game if there's a profit to be made.
The reason this is a pipe dream is because of the overall mechanics of pvp as you see in most games. Unless you have loads of free time to play, you'll always be the prey in these types of games due to levels, gear, etc. I have a family, job, etc so gaming is low on my list of time available to do so I have to play casually. And I'm not stupid enough to pay $15 a month just to be your entertainment. This is the reason that fps' are superior to pvp mmo gaming. Everyone is equal, and it's only based on skill
There are alot more of us in this casual group who can and do spend the money in gaming than "hardcore" pvp'rs. So really, who do you think a developer is going to cater to?
They would both limit the true potential by choosing only one. A PvE only MMO would lose the PvP players and vice versa. Both of them sound like crappy ideas to me. If you only want PvP, pick up any generic FPS game. If you only want PvE, go pick up Final Fantasy XCVII.
The thing that really bothers me is the whole "OMG NOT FORCED PVP" crowd.
If there is one item in the game that you must pvp to get, they'll be a group of people crying about it on the forums. They don't care that all the hardcore pvpers have to PvE to get their gear. They just can't stand PvPers getting one thing they cannot get.
It get's old.
A good game where PvP is the focus and PvE is an afterthought would sell like crazy.
Personally I don't want PvP at all. It seems all games now have PvP of some kind. Even if your are on a PvE server. It would be nice if they would make a pure PvE game and put all their effort into making that fun or make a pure PvP game and put all their effort into making that fun. Right now you get a big bland mix of everything.
Again, if the people who make games believe there's a market for this type of game, don't you think it would have been made already? And for those who use Eve as a pvp example, remember most of the players reside and play in Empire where it's fairly safe from pvp unless you do Faction Warfare of are in a corp war.
I'd love to see one of the reporters on this site ask some of the dev's they interview their opinions on the feasability of a pvp only mmo.

That's true. So far most games that try to do PvE and PvP end up doing both kinda crappy. LOTRO stuck with PvE and seems to have the most loyal following of the recent releases.

I voted purely PVP...
The PVE market, at least the themepark side, is fairly well served with the current Pay2Play MMOs.
For the PVP market, a pure hardcore PVP that actually works is sorely needed. Such an MMO could slide solidly into the top-10 and perhaps top-5.
Of course, I'm not buying it. I'd rather adventure.
