They probably don't have the money to advertise as much as a normal game does, but that doesn't mean they haven't
They already said any gaming site could preview the game as long as they did it on site. I believe they said as they we get closer to release they would lift that stipulation so it is possible we will see sites like gamespot doing some hands on previews
but if you are expecting some huge media blitz with commercials and paid advertisements on websites you are delusional.
We've already come to the conclusion that they are focusing their money on developing the game. A game that has been in development for too many years already. Where do you think they are coming up with the money to pay for advertisements?
I'm sorry I know you have it in your head a set routine for every game released but it doeesn't work the same for independent developersr. Get over it and grow up.
Of why Tasos and crew have absolutely no clue as to what the hell they are doing. Good marketing IS KEY to the success of any product. This is one of the most basic things that you are tought in any kind of business class or course. The fact that Mr Tasos shoves it aside like it's nothing and simply states the game will "sell itself" should be one of the biggest warning signs out there that this person is as clueless as clueless can get and that they peobably do not even have the proper resources to do a sustained marketing campaign such as what Warhammer did with $600,000... But yet DO have the resources to build one of the (on paper) most feature rich MMORPG's ever?? When you develop something you automatically include a marketing budget for it. This is how good and proper projects are planned out.
The best marketing is word of mouth because it creates more hype and costs nothing. Darkfall has achieved that. They are brilliant. They don't need to waste money on cheesy advertisements and gimmicks like SOE-Mythic-Blizzard. Darkfall has more interest in it now than any other MMOG released or in development.
Well looks like OP got banned last night for flaming in other threads (else we would have seen his continued incorrect trolling in this thread some more).
And arcken thanks for picking up the slack i guess, but even you are smart enough to know that they did marketing besides telling fans to "spread the word". Its funny how people will now jump on any reason to bring the game down after they have been proven wrong over and over.
Oh but i forget...you are all just "healthy realist skeptics" who "wont lose" if you DArkfall releases well, and suggesting the game be removed frmo mmorpg.com was just skepticism, and you always supported df so it would be win-win for you. aka no backbone.

Good points Ihmotepp, i think it is pretty hard to answer that. Maybe "massive" is not such a good word...i guess it is more "keep it flowing around" and "keep it on the front page".
If a guy is a gamer who never lurks in forums he maybe has some friends in his guild who do that. They read up some stuff and later talk about it in guild chat..there is your marketing. It is not a perfect example but i think one can get to the point of it. Also the famous "games-small-talk" with your pals over a beer is very important. News are exchanged and most certainly upcoming games...thats where you get hooked and start to talk about.
As i already mentioned this is pretty hard to achieve without making it look like spam or agressive subliminal advertisement. It is essentially walking a very thin line..thats why agencies charge blasphemous amounts of money for their services.
As an example i bought WoW back in the days only because my friends talked a lot about it..i was even pretty much out of MMO gaming after the SWG desaster and only their debates made me buy it. Fact is sooner or later you stumble over a product if it is well placed and good. A friends advise is still one of the top causes for people buying stuff.
This of course also works the other way around in the negative direction...
The funny thing about DF is that they release almost no information about their game or only in very small bits over a long time. Everything is very secretive. That causes people to speculate and to debate and a good debate always pulls in more noses and spreads the word.
Just as a disclaimer: I am not stating that DF will/is (be) bad or good. Just that their advertisement is not as bad as one might think. Hell they even might have a marketing agenda for viral marketing!
Yeah they have a marketing strategy allright, remember when Tasos told the community to go out and "spread the word"?
Lol, did he really say that? Hahahaha.. .
Awesome marketing strategy. Just awesome.
So sad. Making things up...awsome. Seriously it isnt even frustrating anymore, its just hilarious when people say the "marketing strategy" is him telling us to spread the word.
Get over it people....dont be jealous because someone you find arrogant is doing things right and you know it. Can't knock the marketing....since the entire target market for this niche game is well aware of its existence, and many people outside of the market also are watching it closely.

Why should they spent money on advertising? AoC is still advertising, and I can't help myself laughing at them... Darkfall on the other hand has the best publicity a company can wish for. And it's 100% free! WoW is getting ove r2-3 million players avery year, while they barely advertise at all. We all know why, and Darkfall has the same kind of publicity.
You know it, the best way to realize your dreams is waking up and start moving, never lose hope and always keep up.

Unless you market for video games, then im going to doubt you are in marketing at all. Becuase if you were you would know that different industries market differently.
I'm in advertising. TV, magazine, web, whatever the customer wants. We haven't done any MMO marketing though.
Yeah, I think I read somewhere that different industries market differently.. I think I read it from a book. This same book also said that there are these certain rules and principles in marketing that apply to ALL marketing in ALL industries. It's a good book, you should read it sometimes.
What I'm trying to say is that I don't need to have 10 years of experience in MMO marketing to be good at it. Same basic rules apply in all industries. Just give me a product, ANY crappy product, and a budget and I'll make 100k suckers buy it.
It is clear to everyone that Aventurine has no marketing strategy. They don't have a marketing department. They have no marketing person. They have nothing but Tasos doing some weak ass "marketing" with a budget of 75 euros.
I'm guessing your job is to go door to door selling home appliances to housewives and you think that is marketing. Remember kids, selling and marketing are not the same thing.
yeah this is an obvious troll, if he's not a troll I'm pretty safe to say he's REEEAAALLY stupid. Business has nothing to do with making a good game w/e trolls help hype the game, so troll more opium king
EDIT: at above poster... wtf WoW has spent the most money advertizing compared to every mmo ever made! They have TV ADS MAN! But yeah, at many stages in WoW, there was little advertizing.
Well i think his point was that prelaunch they didnt do it much. Obviously post launch they are a marketing machine...commercials..southpark etc...
I have no clue how much they marketed prelaunch cause i just cant remember.
But i good example of why the marketing after release is what counts. And if WoW really didnt market much prelaunch, then im glad DF is going that route instead of the "proper" way of AoC and WAR

You said at least 10 dumb things in your post. I'm too lazy to respond to all of them but I will say this:
Darkfall is well known in THIS community. This small MMORPG.com forum freak community. In the REAL WORLD nobody has ever even heard of the game. While it may seem to you that DF is very talked about here, please try to understand how small this community is.
Even though DF is FFA, there is a lot of POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS out there. That's where MARKETING comes to play. Or at least it should. Word-of-mouth will help the game grow if the game is good but it would still be really DUMB not to do any marketing before launch.
WoW has done tons of prime time TV-ADS. Enough said.
If you want to PM me and have a marketing discussion (again?) id be more than willing to help you. Im in marketing, although it may be in a different industry than you. So you are suggesting it is good that AoC did this? Marketed a crappy product and got people to buy it. Yea im going to give you credit and say that you admit this is not a good strategy for any mmo these days and that DF would be wise to not arouse suspicion. There is so much skepticism around thsi game...it would be BAD MARKETING DECISION TO HYPE THIS GAME UP PRELAUNCH and a smart thing to do to not waste money and prove the product is good first.
It is clear to everyone that Aventurine has no marketing strategy. They don't have a marketing department. They have no marketing person.
Clear? Well I would hope so since Aventurine has openly stated this and admitted to it. Read the latest interview? Seems to be working out quite well for them when you have media asking THEM for info (clearly they know about the game somehow despite this terrible marketing campaign)
I'm guessing your job is to go door to door selling home appliances to housewives and you think that is marketing. Remember kids, selling and marketing are not the same thing.

OK, when I said "Tell me how much..." in regards to WoW marketing, I was putting the challenge on people like the OP.
My point was, they did NOT have the marketing they have now. Not even close. Not even in the same ballpark. WoW became a huge success though. In fact, I wonder why they started having ads at all? I'm pretty sure the TV ads (when they came out) didn't do much.

What's your definition of massive? How many people total are active on this Darkfall forum? How does that compare to the general market for MMORPGs?
How many WoW players don't lurk on forums, and don't know there is such a thing as Darkfall?
How many players buy MMORPGs when they release, but don't follow their development at all?

And it's 100% free! WoW is getting ove r2-3 million players avery year, while they barely advertise at all. We all know why, and Darkfall has the same kind of publicity.
You know it, the best way to realize your dreams is waking up and start moving, never lose hope and always keep up.
yeah this is an obvious troll, if he's not a troll I'm pretty safe to say he's REEEAAALLY stupid. Business has nothing to do with making a good game
w/e trolls help hype the game, so troll more opium king
EDIT: at above poster... wtf WoW has spent the most money advertizing compared to every mmo ever made! They have TV ADS MAN!
But yeah, at many stages in WoW, there was little advertizing.
When I'm energetic I'm:
the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
When I'm at default I'm:
WHITE/BLUE
Lol according to this I'm bipolar :O

"The monsters are tough. I was looking for a challenge, but these things are just too damn smart." -DF Beta Tester
"If people were dismissing it, then they wouldn't be talking about it. The well-meaning gamers root for efforts that try to raise the bar. So who's left? It's so easy being a skeptic." -Tasos
Just give me a product, ANY crappy product, and a budget and I'll make 100k suckers buy it.
I market for the service/hospitality Industry. That is a vague answer but im really not willing to go into more detail...if you are interested you can PM me and again I would be happy to share my backgroudn with you....but for stalker purposes i like to keep my personal info off these boards.
