"Go read their website, they've only got $10Mil ... War Hammer never made it to beta because SEGA lacked $20 Mil to give them to complete it."
uh you dont need anywhere near 20 million to make a MMORPG. Dark age of camelot was made for 3 million. Warhammer online was not cancelled because of lack of funding, it was cancelled because it sucked just like dragon empires.
Common guys, let's face reality here and not set people up for such an obivious disappointment. This rosy nonsense is bad for everyone. This is not a "a Star Trek MMO will see the light of day and that a solid developer is behind it" ... this is, "Yet another MMO that will never make it to beta because it's woefully underfunded and has an unproven team."
This "rosy nonsense," as you put it, is excited, positive reaction to a press release regarding a title with huge potential. Perpetual has a long road ahead, but to condemn them at this early stage is utter foolishness.
I'll take rosy nonsense over jaded, pessimistic cynicism any day. THAT'S what's truly bad for everyone.
----- There are 10 types of people in this world...those who understand binary, and those who don't.
I'm definately going to have to put a lock on my door...
I have to admit i'm somewhat excited to learn more about this game. Coming from Eve Online(i'm about to sell my veteran account according to regulations set forth by their conditions and stipulations specified at www.eve-online.com)I wonder, apart from the fan base of "Trekkies", how well will this game entice regular sci-fi fans from pre existing titles such as SWG and the renowed Eve Online?
Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas on how they could accomplish this?

This is very good news. This game already has a built in fan base who will play the game regardless. I do not envy the devs, because they will have to deliver. I just hope they do not fall into the same traps that SWG has.
This year will debut alot of new games claiming to push the MMO genre to a new level. I am especially excited about MxO. Since Star Trek has 2 more years of development to go, they will have the unique oportunity to create something mind-blowing. We will wait and see.

90% Star Trek games have been just awful, I don't blame anyone for being skeptical. Combine that with a fan base with unrealistic expectations, you have a petenaly volital combination.
Let's face it, this is a very large order to fill.

No doubt. No one is denying that. But naysaying after the initial press release is absurd. What we have here is a company with a 10 year license claim on the Star Trek universe. Where they take it is up to them.
Star Trek games have a tradition of stinking up the joint, but Perpetual has made none of them. Neither has any of them been a MMOG. I would hate to crucify a startup company for the sins of myriad others, particularly SOE.

To answer Malkavian, how to get regular sci fi fans to catch and nterest and even becoming paying costumers to a Star trek MMO. I am a sci fi fan... I hate Star trek. pretty much the person you are looking for. So, how could I become interested in this one?
The developers really need to take their task very serious. No fooling around, not getting all goofy, and try to make the game in the same jolly colors, funny costumes and odd machinery in that 70s kinda budget- look all non trekkers see when they watch Star trek. From a non Star Trek fan, and I am pretty sure I am not alone in this, I find the whole Star trek concept.. goofy. Some might find the charm in that, I find it... well, if I want colorful clowns, then I do not look at the Sci fi shelf in the video store, I look at cartoons, or... circus movies.
So to catch my interest, they need to make it more serious. Not darker, like some seem to think, that with enough shadows, anything can be serious. No, like Lord of the Rings was made, completly serious, not trying to sell toys, or make small funny catch phrases, or stupid jokes or annoying sidekicks (Well, they did have annoying sidekicks. But they were also in the book). They told the story, and told it well.
Can the developers touch on that. Touch the lives of the Star Trek saga, find out all the stuff that happens in the real lives of the characters, not only "next episode, new planet, another bug eyed monster, bad effects, and... the end"
In short, make those two dimensional characters into 3 dimensional lives, make a two dimensional set into a 3 dimensional world, and stop with the bloody goofiness, then yes. I could be interested. Anyone try to force me into orange spandex and no, it will not happen.
Only game I wait for right now: Imperator. Go Mythic!

I happy to give Perpetual the benefit of the doubt... at least until more information is released. I'm not sure how exactly they are going to pull this off.
