Today I seen a CNN news cast that stated that Dell will soon be charging a fee for asking for and using English speaking tech support here in the U.S.A. That's right folks you will now be stuck with the tech support from India. Is this a thinly veiled attempt to force Dell users into using under qualified people as tech support. ( Under qualified: Can not speak understandable English )
Personally I never cared for a Dell even though they bought out Alien Ware. This move was viewed by some as a sweep away of the competition to the XPS system, on the other hand it was viewed as a way to improve the xps. Sad to see such a cool looking cool looking laptop slip into history. So if you are thinking of buying a new computer keep in mind it will cost you to buy a Dell one way or another. Is their product so well made that tech support is not that important?

Unbelievable.
It baffels me to as to why people still buy desktops anymore, It is so much cheeper to build your own. When you buy a dell your buying the name anyways. Laptops are a different story tho. I still would never buy a dell.

Silly Dell, when will they ever learn?
Not really the case, always. I've built all my machines up until the most recent. If one can wait until older models start getting liquidated, and one considers just the hardware assets vs. any namebrand (because we all wipe the preinstalled junk anyway I hope, laptop or not...), then some excellent deals can be had.
Just to throw in the point that it is really not "so much cheaper" to build your own. It used to be more so, now not so much, and really my time is more valuable than wiring up all the mobo wires and getting the little plastic spacers set. I'm old and lazy now.

This is for normal desktop owners and laptops. The business or corporate solutions are still in the USA thank god. But yeah this is just stupid, and an attempt to get some extra money because of hard times. This probably will piss many people off and to buy from Gateway for the desktop laptop needs.
Who let you in the VIP section?
Agreed. Whenever I build a new one, I usually use the Alienware systems as a starting template. I can build the best they have, and with even better components in many cases, thousands of dollars cheaper.

I agree with you toddze, if you want a better computer than any other brand name you can buy, of course you're going to build you own. But in times like these it is a little difficult to make it cheaper than a brand name. With purchasing a brand name you can add a warrenty on the whole computer, but with your own build you would have to purchase warranties for the individual parts. For me though, it is a hobby, and I like to do computer modding, but if i didnt want the hassle like you, I would put my money on HP anyways, their computers last and have great tech support and warranties. So screw dell and their stupid tech support!

I find the Indian customer support better then the support you recieve in the US in most cases. The Indian support technician is usually really nice. They are also more inclined to send a replacement.
However, this isn't a cheap move by DELL. It may even be a downright bad move to take as far as finances. Long distance calls to India aren't cheap, and sometimes tech support can take an hour.
Yeah...instead of paying the normal 35 cents per hour ...they'd have to pay 38 cents per hr for a good english speaking resident of India...so got to make up the difference somewhere.

What are you two smoking? It's still way cheaper to build your own than it is to buy prebuit. Recently I was working on a project at school where my group had to answer a request for proposal to make a $20,000 PC gaming room. It was rediculous how much cheaper it was to build the computers that it was to but from HP or Dell.
Dell was the worst as it was really hard to put anything together. Their prices are just out of hand for the poor choices they offered. When I did a build for 10 gaming machines, Dell ended up having weaker processors and non gaming video cards because their prices were just out of hand.
HP was reasonable but not great. The processors were good, but the best gaming card I could fit in budget was a 9800GT
Then came the newegg build. Quad core processor, 4 gigs of ram, 4870 x2, and any other essential high end hardware, and ended up further under budget when everything was tallied up than Dell or HP.
If you want to buy prebuilt because you don't want to deal with building it or don't know how is one thing. To say it doesn't make sense because of price is just stupid.

Well guys.... MY OPINION anyways lol is that if you have the know how too build your own computer then yes... its WAY CHEAPER and better cause you get what you want exacly..... but if your a new person too computers or just know how too turn one on and surf the net and listen too music... like ex: my dad.... i 100% recommend DELL too ppl like them... you will not find ANYWHERE in U.S.A or CANADA a better company for noobs and computer illeterates... now if you know computers like me... i would never touch a Dell... but for recomending too those who dont know computers... Dell is my #1 choice for recommendation... And i see Wildcardz is RACIST.... So what if the PHONE support is from india.... Did you know that India is the #1 country for tech support. Most indian ppl know more about tech and computers then any other country in the world. so honestly if you dont have a huge problem with there accent and can understand them thru the accent... you cannot have anyone better the india... I actually hate Tech Support from U.S.A from any company cause yes they speak english well... THATS IT... " i have a problem with my ram" reply from American Tech Support "What is ram?" so yes... id rather have india as tech support lol.
Agree to this post.

unless your a company that has a long distance plan lol... reason india is one of the top support countries for phone is cause of there long distance plans
Dell's been phasing out their US customer support lines for the past 8 years. My friend used to work their customer support lines and when the contract for renewal came up Dell didn't renew and went with an India based support line. Depending on how many US companies they were using they've put thousands of US employees out of jobs and from the sounds of it there's no stopping them anytime soon thanks to the Government encouraging it which is damn stupid and has been ever since they signed those bills years ago.
If the government doesn't start taxing or encouraging companies to hire american's the recession will only continue to get worse.
Dell decided to close all offices outside the US last year and make it solely inside US for business (except call centres)
They have had call centres in Malaysia for several years now.
Whats great for me in my line of work is the competition offering a "free dell laptop" when you sign up - yet it has one year warrantly and tech support in Malaysia - say that to a customer and they steer well clear.
Although a college brought his wife a 1525 laptop recently and found the battery to be getting to hot. He rang them up but told them that a friend had cut himself and spilled blood over the laptop and it stopped working. Because it was a bio hazard they told him they didnt want the laptop back and sent out a brand new XPS with all the trimmings...

Should have tried AvADirect. Nice prices, nice testing cycle, free 1 year warranty/$40* 3 year warranty on parts and labor, insane amount of compatible options, and can make a GOOD rig for under $950.. 1,200-1,300 for an overkill rig. Building your own PC just isn't as good to the wallet as it used to be.
im sorry but its because of the recession that companies like dell have too cut back and use like india for tech support... remember the recession didnt just hit the U.S.... every country in the world is suffering right now.... has nothing too do with india taking jobs from americans... though i do see the point where american jobs should stay in the U.S... KINDA... cause i live in canada and theres lots of americans and american companies here that took alot of jobs from canadians.... so if you think that india is taking jobs away from americans... well americans are doing the same in other countries....
Im confused at what your example of customers cheating companies out of money have to do with Dell putting US employees out of work to use forgein cheap labor.
They could of been using US customer support and your cheating lying friend would of gotten the same response due to the bio hazard.
We werent' in a recession 8 years ago when Dell started to phase out their US support lines. Companies like dell have been turning to cheap labor countries since the late 90s when the government made it easier for them to put people out of work which started the slow economic down turn as people scramble for jobs.
Canadian law is alot tougher on letting US Citizens work within their borders than we are. I wasn't able to even apply for a company I wanted to work for until I'd worked a job in the US doing the same thing for atleast 2 years before they could even consider it.
btw we're nto doign the same to other countries on the same level. Its one thing for a person to move to another country to work its another when your company fires you puts an office up in another country and hirers cheaper labor. American workers are NOT the cheaper labor so I hardly doubt Canadian companies are dying to come down here and hire a ton of expensive americans.
Here in Edmonton, The city lured the call centre to the city in 2005 with a 20-year agreement to waive property taxes on the company's southside call centre, concessions worth $1.1 million for the first five years. 900 jobs affected as Dell closes Edmonton call centre a lot ended up working for the company I do.
Still gave em a break in taxes, looks like it's just another US company who can't manage themselves properly.
im sorry but i LOOKED EVERYWHERE and EVERY FORUMS on the net about dell call centres and there is no mention that dell started this 8 years ago... alot though on it starting in the last 12 months.... when the market started too go in a downward spiral.

I'm currently on a good rig I built for approximately $600. I would say making a top end gaming rid for 1200 is pretty darn reasonable though. Can you go on your site and put together a build with an intel quad core, 4 gigs of 1066 ram, an 4870 x2, high end 24" monitors and put it at that price?

Ya but we have a great computer store here
But i bought my new on from Tigerdirect and its quadcore I7 with 12gigs of ram, 4870X2 card and 2 solid state hd's with Rampage 2 overclocking mother board... and that cost me $2000 and the ONLY way too make this computer anybetter then it is for gaming is too add 2 more 4870X2 cards and adding watercooling.thats IT... so for 2000 and i have the TOP OF THE LINE gaming computer... so imagine what a decent computer would cost... like he said... 1200... and even less
I am an MCSE and work in the IT industry. I build my own machines for my use and had, until recently, been advising my family members to buy DELL. Lets just say I got tired of being free, 24 hour tech support for my family... including extended family - get my drift? Anywho... I am now advising them to buy HP's as I have seen three DELL hard drives crap-out in the past year in machines that were either under warranty or recently expired their warranty. And trust me... I am as angry as you can get at the over sea's help desks. Especially when I have to call them... I called Microsoft on a SQL issue earlier this year and got handed off to seven different engineers... the first six were in India, the last in Texas. And get this... all six Indian engineers were in totally different cities in India!!!! And I don't mean within driving distance of each other either.
Too make a long story short, I was very happy to work with the guy in Texas. And when you consider that I am from Arkansas... you know it must have been a bad day for me to admit that!!!
Go HOGS!
