In all the games they run how many subs might have been lost due to fixes not coming or anything remotely related to if they had more staff.

I'm just thinking that if they had used this same mentality (to hire more people) they may have had a much higher long term retention rate.. which would have lead to more profit.

What really disturbs me is that SOE knows this will drive some of their customers away and they are fine with that. You can read it straight from Bruce Fergusons interview how they factor in the subscriber loss when they plan this crap. For years their business plans have always factored in throwing chucks of their players underneath the bus while they try to grab a buck.

I see a lot of posts about having one or the other, but not both. Sure seems like they're doing both. Of course with people being so cravenly conservative or liberal these days, it's no wonder that the majority doesn't understand that the free market works to make money and nothing else. Looks to me like Sony is doing what EVERY major corporate entity does. They're exploring money making options, and like other companies they'll likely only keep it if it proves lucrative.

Which is even more reason why NOT to subscribe to SoE games.
If they expect subscribers to leave, they have no commitment to do anything to improve the game. So why waste money being their marketing experiement (and departing with your cash)?

From drastically altering the game with every expansion and "revamp" in attempts to cater to certain player bases, begging former players to rejoin with all manner of rewards, practically giving the entire game and expansion away for free, coupons for expansions and so on. In fact I can think of several occasions which SOE initiatives have driven their numbers down.
Why would repeating the madness that is SOE be any different on this occasion?
P.S. The largest MMOs with item malls also started out with them and are free to play. How do you think those games would fare if the next patch suddenly put a $14.95/month subscription fee on top of those item malls?

Also I want to point out that, surely they will make money out of it, no doubt about it.
The failure in introducing the RMT is not that people won't use it, it has more to do with future prospects of SoE rather than today.
The fact is that many people will leave SoE after this RMT crap, the customers that will stay will use RMT and they will make up for the lost customers, so in that sence it will be succesful.
Problem is that after all the messing around with all their games, all the lies and deceiving, after the unwelcome introduction of RMT, SoE will have problems attracting new customers for their current and future games, while the ex-customer will stay far away from it.
SoE need the internet comunity to hype and sell its games, and at the moment it doesn't seems like they will be willing to give SoE an hand.
The Internet community is nasty when they band together, see what happened to WAR and AoC, you ned few hundred disgrunted people to start a chain reaction which in the end will ruin the changes of recovery for a game.
So the damage is more of a long term issue rather than a short term one, and SoE will see the results of their mischief when they will launch The Agency and DC Online.

If anything, I would think that keeping track of many smaller transactions as opposed to a single monthly recurring one would actually be more difficult.

The credit card fees for these micro transactions are higher. It's why they want players to buy the credits (or whatever a publisher calls their game cash). Plus, they make the "cards" where you can't use the full amount without buying more, thus players will have 2+ cards with less than the amount to pay for one item in the game's store.
They've been doing this ripoff since the arcade days, with trading quarters into game tokens.

The cost, and upkeep of them is less in terms of overhead for companies in regards to development, and upkeep.
It’s a proven model that is working even outside of the MMO world. Its also not new for SOE, or the games they have added it to.

The largest games are micro tans. Many people will download and fire up a F2P game, only to play it for a week and delete it. I played Shaiya for about 2 days last year, so I guess I could be counted as a 'subscriber'...
They outnumber subscription models. Of course. It's the classic case of quantity vs. quality.
The cost, and upkeep of them is less in terms of overhead for companies in regards to development, and upkeep. How exactly is it cheaper to run a RMT game than a pure subscription game? If anything, I would think that keeping track of many smaller transactions as opposed to a single monthly recurring one would actually be more difficult.

The credit card fees for these micro transactions are higher. It's why they want players to buy the credits (or whatever a publisher calls their game cash). Plus, they make the "cards" where you can't use the full amount without buying more, thus players will have 2+ cards with less than the amount to pay for one item in the game's store.
They've been doing this ripoff since the arcade days, with trading quarters into game tokens.
