1 beta key generates as much interest for this game as 1000 as far as I can see. Maybe even more, due to the haters not being able to resist using the fact to fuel flamethrowers.
What it does show though is it that DF is ready to show itself to journalists, and therefore us. This means it is at least in some kind of release state.
This is a good good thing.
I don't need to be in beta to enjoy this game, and especially not a few weeks before launch when all the testing has been done.
This press weekend will obviously generate enough information to base my descision to buy on.
So... 1 or 1,000,000 it dosent matter. I'm not sure why anyone thinks it does.

The problem with the 1 Beta key is that it compounds people's already growing fear that there are too few people playing the Beta. This close to release they really need to start thinking about stress tests. I'm not talking 20-30 people or a few dozen AI bots, I mean real stresses to address the issues that are going to occur when hundreds or thousands of people log in. The game might be 'feature complete' as Tasos put it, but what use is that if the server grinds to a halt on January the 22nd?
I agree with Zayne, and that's putting it lightly. The fact they are keeping the actual gameplay secret from the mass public is not very reassuring. And this is comming from someone who has high hopes in Darkfall.
I agree with Zayne as well. Why wouldn't they release some keys to other websites and have a banner on the front page of MMORPG with a contest or give away?? Something just doesn't seem right.
Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!
That just about sums up this game for me.
That just about sums up this game for me.
Nothing about DF has ever felt right.
My Brute - Dare to challenge?
Why do you think this? It obviously is not clear evidence as I don't understand your point.
I am just trying to figure out what the hell they were thinking releasing the 1 key.
This is PR at it's finest I tell you.
They have taken a situation that was 50/50 split and now tilted it more towards the negative.
This kinda news does not go over well with gamers. Just like the 6 people that have already posted here, they all think the same thing, something is just not right.
It is true something isn't right with this situation. Now even the fan will have ?'s in their heads....
Wasn't a smart move.
You have a Jan 22, 2009 release date, exactly 1 month away, and you giving away 1 beta key.
To test servers designed for thousands..... Yeah that's smart.
Please explain how the amount of beta keys given away has any relation to the budget of the game?
However, while it is true 1 key (in this case) gives as much pr as 1000, it needs to be considered why that is. If this were just another release e.g. TCoS which recently did so, then 1 beta key would not only go completely unoticed it would also make the game a laughing stock with those that were actually interested enough in the first place to be aware of such a pointless promo.
Personally I find it difficult to understand why this was done at all. These devs have before shown themselves to be clueless when it comes to advertising their game, but in this case it goes far, far beyond that.
I would not be surprised if this was just a joke, they must have been aware of the joke this would become. Other than that maybe the mods (of mmorpg.it) were given a small number of keys for themselves and asked the devs if they could give 1 as a competition. Even then it shows poor judgment.

I actually understand why you guys ask this, honestly, but you know what?
Having personally never sat at the helm of a MMORPG dev team,
having personally never launched a game of this complexity,
having very little idea personally of the technology Aventurine are using to test the server,
having no hard facts as to how many are in beta already,
and,
assuming that Aventurine are more experienced and knowledgeable, and have a lot more to lose, then me in all this, I'm gonna trust them until I read the facts on the game and not worry too much about things not being 'right'.
Like I say, journalists will be in the game before your are, and they will report. NDA will be lifted for this, so testers will report. Noone is gonna take money off you before you read up on the game and make your own mind up based on a variety of sources.
I'm not sure what dosent seem 'right', or why people are so worried about it not seeming 'right'. Noone is trying to sell you a pre-order or a pioneer account or whatever after all. You will see if it's 'right' in plenty of time, so no need for paranoia :P
My point is that they don't need to let 10,000 people in to generate hype, when 1 does the job as well. They just need the journalists.
Anyhow, this may just be the first of the competitions that will be happening, who knows?
Like I say, the fact they are letting the press see the game is a great sign and shows the launch is real. This to me is brilliant news.
I am gonna assume the Aventurine know the state of their game better then us right?
What it means is that they are also currently putting together a excuse to push the release date back some more. They obviously are looking for someone who is neutral, that wont judge the game. This whole thing seems pretty fishy to me.
If anyone can read that Italian site, please post up the date that contest was posted if at all possible.
Lol who the fuck ever said that?
Ask each and every single DF fanboy, they will canidly agree that DF is a niche game, with all the highs and lows.
That's what the trolls attribute to the fanboys saying, so they can patronise them with the warning messages.
What DF fanboys say is that DF will be a great game for them, not for everyone.
That's it.
This is true.

AAA title or not, 1 beta would be funny if it weren't true.

Why do you post made up suppostitions as 'facts'?
How does it even come close to meaning this? Except in your head?
Lord, you people...
I can't imagine anyone actually believing that everything is normal and good with the development of this game. This is especially true for anyone who's been around MMOs for any real length of time. We could go back and forth all day long, but what's the point? Factual information will be coming out soon enough, and there will probably be more than a few "I told you so's" flying around regardless of whether this game is all it's cracked up to be or not.
On a side note, a recent study concluded that fanboys are 6 times more likely to step in dog shit than the average gamer. It seems they don't recognize shit when they see it.
Haha, just kidding guys. I'm just having a little bit of fun.

I never posted it as FACT, I posted it as my own theory that way if i am wrong about it I wont be at a complete loss. Never once since day 1 of DF have I ever posted anything as FACT. I may be a member of this site, but never confuse me with a DF Fanboi...they are the ones that post things claiming to be FACT.
what it realy means is failure

No, if it had been presented as a theory it would have been qualified as such by a 'I think..' or whatever before it.
What you posted was presented as a fact.
I have highlighted in your post where you made a statement, presented as a fact.
Well done for going so quickly to the ole 'Fanboy' last resort insult though.
I think I will block you now.
Gamerman, I will be here on the 23rd of January for the RE- release date party.
My guess would be April 16th 2009.
Anyway I will bring the hats and you can bring those little spinner things that make noise.
Then we can plan the next party for April 17th 2009 where we get to do it all again, except this time I will bring the spinny things and you bring the hats.
Deal!! I do plan to watch the launch with some popcorn and beer...you can join that too if you want lol
they have 500-700 testers
Its also possible that they know the game is good and will attract players regardless. Its pretty apparent that the MMO community is pretty close and if the game is good then 1000's will be drawn to it without any prompting. The game is well known mostly and all it needs is good press post launch and they wont have to worry about attracting players.
Look at some of the mass hyped games in 2008. AoC and WAR came out and sold thousands due to pre publicity but at least 3/4 left in the first 1-3 months.
Word spreads quickly.
alternatively the game is shite and they are trying to keep it a secret.
na dont worry about that
Well i am italian so can read all posts, admin say this key will work at begin january when they start beta for press.
So many game sites writers will be able to see the game at begin january.
Actually only 2/3 left AoC and WAR; however, those that left were more than likely turned off by the less "friendly" atmosphere compared to WoW. PvP isn't a main stream genre. I used to play Asheron's Call and Darktide hardly ever broke 1600 during it's lifespan, and that's saying something when there were 7 other servers each with between 1500 and 2500 players.
Although the genre has certainly grown, 50,000-100,000 dedicated players is nothing to scoff at. And this game has the makings to be the next Asheron's Call, Ultima Online, or Shadowbane if the creator commentary is true.
The problem with the market right now is that WoW has hit it so big that everyone is like "OMG! It's not WoW!" and most MMOs released in the past 3 years has been a sissy MMO inspired by WoW's mechanics of emphasis on solo gameplay, easy quests, and emphasis on PvE.
Let it be known that I hate WoW with a passion and will defend almost any MMORPG against it.

Aventurine does not work in mysterious ways, dev cycles, technologies and methodologies are well documented processes that have been thoroughly tested since the era of bedroom coding and the models that work have been estabilished, most people that have followed MMO's for a while will be familiar with the basics of the dev cycles and know more or less the phases through which it has to go through to be considered a successfull development, trying to convince people that Aventurine has somehow "broke the mold" and found some secret way or technology to sell a piece of software other multi billion dollar companies failed to discover is foolish and highly unlikely.
