I agree with Zayne as well. Why wouldn't they release some keys to other websites and have a banner on the front page of MMORPG with a contest or give away?? Something just doesn't seem right.

Having personally never sat at the helm of a MMORPG dev team,
having personally never launched a game of this complexity,
having very little idea personally of the technology Aventurine are using to test the server,
having no hard facts as to how many are in beta already,
and,
assuming that Aventurine are more experienced and knowledgeable, and have a lot more to lose, then me in all this, I'm gonna trust them until I read the facts on the game and not worry too much about things not being 'right'.
Like I say, journalists will be in the game before your are, and they will report. NDA will be lifted for this, so testers will report. Noone is gonna take money off you before you read up on the game and make your own mind up based on a variety of sources.
I'm not sure what dosent seem 'right', or why people are so worried about it not seeming 'right'. Noone is trying to sell you a pre-order or a pioneer account or whatever after all. You will see if it's 'right' in plenty of time, so no need for paranoia :P
My point is that they don't need to let 10,000 people in to generate hype, when 1 does the job as well. They just need the journalists.
Anyhow, this may just be the first of the competitions that will be happening, who knows?
Like I say, the fact they are letting the press see the game is a great sign and shows the launch is real. This to me is brilliant news.

I seem to recall another game community notorious for the same elitist view of their game before it released, with statements of "We don't need you!" and "Go away, we don't want you lousy carebears!" and "We don't need a big community, we just need ourselves, the real OG gamers!"
I believe the game was called "Vanguard:Saga of Heroes".
As you can see, it turned out to be a smashing success.

The difference though is that Vanguard was supposed to have hundreds of thousands of subscribers after release but it never met the goal it was supposed to aspire to.

Darkfall, on the other hand, was only supposed to have 1 server at launch. Which would equal roughly 50-60k subscribers.
This would have been a success for Aventurine. Since it appears they will be opening up more than 1 server at launch we will just have to wait and see how it goes.
Just remember, success to the developers can mean something entirely different than success to the players. Honestly, a lot of the forum-goers think anything less than WoW numbers is a failure.
To Winter: Reason for the NDA? There are only three reasons it would still be in effect at this point.
1. They are not finished putting in all of the "finished" systems so they won't drop the NDA until then.
2. The game will not release on 1-22-09.
3. They will never drop the NDA. This is rare, but it has happened in the past and honestly would not surprise me at all with Darkfall.

Hehe small subscriber base for the win aye Darth? Guess it'll be funny when they can't support the server cost or do any expansions etc. due to the lack of subscribers. Does make one wonder why they bothered to have a huge world if they don't want many subscribers.
Gonna feel pretty lonely all out there by yourself Darth, ah but hell should make for less lag right and you can just imagine the 200 vs 200 battles with graphics better then AoC that you claim Darkfall will have. I seem to recall another game community notorious for the same elitist view of their game before it released, with statements of "We don't need you!" and "Go away, we don't want you lousy carebears!" and "We don't need a big community, we just need ourselves, the real OG gamers!"
I believe the game was called "Vanguard:Saga of Heroes".
As you can see, it turned out to be a smashing success.
The difference though is that Vanguard was supposed to have hundreds of thousands of subscribers after release but it never met the goal it was supposed to aspire to.
Edit: Plus it was a buggy mess of a game.
Darkfall, on the other hand, was only supposed to have 1 server at launch. Which would equal roughly 50-60k subscribers.
This would have been a success for Aventurine. Since it appears they will be opening up more than 1 server at launch we will just have to wait and see how it goes.
Just remember, success to the developers can mean something entirely different than success to the players. Honestly, a lot of the forum-goers think anything less than WoW numbers is a failure.
To Winter: Reason for the NDA? There are only three reasons it would still be in effect at this point.
1. They are not finished putting in all of the "finished" systems so they won't drop the NDA until then.
2. The game will not release on 1-22-09.
3. They will never drop the NDA. This is rare, but it has happened in the past and honestly would not surprise me at all with Darkfall.
