Of course this thread assumes that DF will have a successful Launch and for the sake of argument let's just say hypothetically it does.
With that said, one would to admit that TCoS looks really good and that game is released in EU w/ favorable reviews, and with Mortal Online hot on the heels with their developement, what will DF's outlook be? The question here is will Darkfall be able to keep their fanbase when TCoS and MO are released? Respectively does DF risk loosing to the other 2 titles listed. Let's face it, TCoS has David Perry backing it up (the successful game producer from the early SEGA Genesis days, pioneered rotoscoping animation for the classic Aladin on Genesis and was a Co-founder of Shiny Entertainment.) And if DF survives an MMO that has David Perry's clout backing it, then will it next survive Mortal Online, which is supported by the highly successful Unreal engine (dont' forget that TCoS uses the Unreal engine as well).
I am looking forward to DF being successful, because on paper it does sound it, but even if it succeeds at first, will it last w/ the tough compettition it has in the near future.
Anyone's thoughts?
Comments
There is almost nobody playing TCOS, and MO won't be out for years.
I'm not a fanboi at all, I don't care if DF succeeds or fails so much as want any game that's like DF to work.
TCOS isn't Darkfall. It's got a little tiny bit in common. I hope it pulls away people that are only interested in how their starter robes look so DF avoids the temporary bubble population on the servers.
Mortal sounds great, but it doesn't even have a real release date yet. It would be the next game I'm looking at, if DF is so awful I can't play. I like the features that are listed in Darkfall better than Mortal, if they can pull them off I won't stray.

you are stating the obvious that's why i said about "hypotheically..." and "for the sake of argument"..
so the point of your rebutal?
Not to put a damper on the main topic... but there are far more failures with Unreal then success stories. And Epic is not "supporting" Mortal Online, they're merely leasing their graphical technology. "Highly Successful" is not the most accurate term... talk to Silicon Knights or Ubisoft about that... or Electronic Arts... or even Webzen.
More importantly in the MMO scene, is that the only successful Unreal using MMO is, still, Lineage 2 (and given a little more time, maybe Vanguard)... and they had to rewrite massive portions of it in order to make it properly work (SOE is still working on that part, but making pretty good strides).
I applaud Aventurine for creating their own technology (if they're not using Torque as a base... which I'm still shifty about). It shows they have a level of knowhow with coding (hopefully, for the fanboi's sakes).

MO is just vaporware, its even "developed" in Sweden.....much smaller country then Greece. TCoS seems to be a really nice PvE MMO (i have just dl it) but its no DF.
All good points, but TCoS upon reading it's features, I came off w/ more than the "Dress to Impress" feature... is that all you saw? I think that feature is not the important part of this but their pvp system seems pretty solid on paper... mind you it's not like DF in that DF is geared for total pvp environment but still solid enough to be compettetive... however you made some good points... yeah Mortal wont be out for a while but still it begs to wonder what will happen do DF when it does... I do predict based on MO's combat system and that they are more communicative w/ their forums fans as opposed to how Adventurine/Taso handled their fanbase as an indicator that MO crew might have their act together more so... and respectively this could be an indicator that MO may just be a lot better upon market release than DF may ever be... though I am like you in that I hope that any game like DF works. Thanks for your insightful thoughts
first off no one plays acos and secondly MO doesnt even have 1 milisecond of game footage the only thing i have seen is some shitty computer graphics "teaser" that looked extremely gay
TCOS is NOT competition for Darkfall. I played the TCoS 7 day trial, the servers are fairly empty. While the game is fun and a little different it is NOT open pvp or anything of that sort. Really pvp is limited to PvP servers and a few zones with NO looting, no city controling, no ships, nothing and most importantly its level and class based. TCOS and Darkfall are not similar in ANY way.
On the other hand Mortal does stand a chance at giving Darkfall a run for its money. I think what will be important is which one is better, it's that simple. If Darkfall fails to deliver initially it might lose a large chunk of its player base to mortal, on the other hand if Darkfall REALLY delivers and Mortal doesnt release for 6 months or so then Mortal might have some problems chipping away at Darkfalls players base. What it really comes down to is will DF deliver or not, which is yet to be seen. If it does then I think it will be fine, if not then Mortal does stand a chance at taking some of its players, but TCoS definitly does not.
TCoS f2p client (free upto lvl 7.9) was released 5th of December. IMO it's safe to say the game is/will not be a threat to any other game out there. Having Unreal engine in itself does not quarantee you will be able to make a good game. Can't comment on MO as I haven't been following that one. Darkfall will succeed or fail on it's own merit, not due to any other game coming out in foreseeable future.
Just scrolling through these forums i can only conclude -nothing- will affect Darkfall. Al lthe fanbois are setting this game up as an "elitest hardcore niche" game. In other words, it's going to be small, it's going attract only very specific players.
So it's really like saying "will UO survive when TCoS and MO comes out" ? Sure it will, it just won't be "massive" .
interesting... well it almost seems unfair to declare something "vaporware" w/out any proof but why call it that after checking out their website...
Now i feel sorry for any new dev that might want to bring out a new idea or game... they could be accused of "vaporware" syndrome ...
Now could MO end up belly up and never come out, sure that could happen, and could happen to any company for any number of reasons, ... does that make it vaporware?
For that matter would you consider this vaporeware since it's in it's early stages?

all very good points, and I do especially agree with applauding Adventurine for creating their own technology as well... it shows they have balls and are will to trying something new...
You guys see how skinny some of those guys are in tcos and jackalopes? I wont play that game but i def will try mo out even if i love darkfall. But other then the wow graphics tcos has it sounds like it has good features but I still couldnt bring myself to playing it. I still think Darkfall will still have a good playerbase because of the sandbox style of playing and this is just assuming the game is good at launch.

ummm ... I'm not sure what you're trying to say here?
yes, there has been much said about sandbox univerese vs. instancing of areas. I would be inclined to agree w/ that unforgetable... well said.
you are stating the obvious that's why i said about "hypotheically..." and "for the sake of argument"..
so the point of your rebutal?
if its obvious then why did you make this topic.? TCOS is free to play and nobody is playing it so obviously it not competition for Darkfall. And MO won't be out for many years, so who cares about that now?

obviously people do care or they wouldn't be replying to this thread, as you yourself have done... but remember this thread is about "hypothetical" speculation based upon what information is currently out there... so I do thank you for your comments... yes it is true that MO won't be out for years, I think everyone here knows that.
There is also almost nobody playing Darkfall right now. That could easily change for both games after they are released.

It depends on whether Darkfall is any good of a game. If it's riddled with game-breaking bugs that don't get fixed, it will die pretty quickly, and would do so even without the competition you cite. If it's half as good as the fanboys hope, Darkfall will do just fine.
Country comparison is just plain wrong. If you want to compare likelihood of something getting released, lets look at the facts (short version, they keep on going similarly).
Greece - population 10.7 million, GDP 315 billion USD, state budget income 115 billion/expenditures 124 billion.
Sweden - population 9.0 million, GDP 455 million USD, state budget income 249 billion/ependitures 233 billion.
Sweden is one of the most technolgically advanced countries in the world, including probably every aspect of economy. They have even made some good games, Battlefield 1942 and follow ups come to mind first.
Still, can't say anything about MO. Im not from Sweden
What does country size have to do with anything? Europa Universalis II was developed in Sweden, and it's one of the best games ever made, even if it's not an MMORPG.

well said, and a solid rebuttal to Daarco's comment.

Hypothetically (a big assumption, cause it doesn't look like Mortal Online is coming out, and if it does, not for a few years), Darkfall has more to offer in terms of features. Mortal offers lagtastic graphics, thats about it. But the more sandbox games the better.
Darkfall Travelogues!
