The all current games suck - thread

RekindleRekindle Member UncommonPosts: 1,206

Hi,

Any MMO that I've seen discussed on these forums in the last 4 years or so are basically rehashed versions of Everquest.  There is a growing sub community of players who have simply grown totally exhausted from this level grind model.

This thread is for everyone who feels like I do. EQ and UO were great games but one can only play that theam of game in easy mode for so long  before it gets to be exhausting.  Gone are the days of the sandbox where you got a message (if that) that said "Welcome to UO" with no more tasks described.  Gone are the days of discovery and random wandering, trial and error and puzzle solving.

.....I  no longer subscribe to MMOs:  The leveling, the fedex style content, the feeling of disappointment that comes with each successive MMO, the cookie cutter feel that every mmo has, the lack of the R and the P and G has lead to this thread.  For the life of me I can't understand why a 20million dollar game engine has to wrap itself around such poorly written content.

Clearly there is a market for these craptastic titles. A BIG market....look at WoW for this.   Posting heremeans you are in the minority and feel you have been forgotten by the big publishers.

You are repulsed by:

Task driven quests

Fedex quests

Full blown GPS style maps that leave no discovery

Cookies and cutters.

Barrens Chat type- communties.

Lets see how many people feel like this.

Happy 2009.

Dont play mmorpg games if you think they suck.

Or atleast make it as decent as WoW, most of the games coming out are way under the par that WoW has set.

If you can't find a game you like...  You have issues.

This website alone has over a hundred, if you broaden your horizons a bit more it comes to a few thousand playable games.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

Wow is the biggest part of the problem now a days. How about going in a different direction and listening "with in reason" to the people who pay them. Now that would be EPIC!

you haven't looked.   I'm willing to vote with my wallet and play what you call the ugly, old, and outdated(even though it's not nearly that bad).  If you can't I guess you can't play the MMOs you want and you have an enconomical vote no one cares about.   You've already defeated yourself go enjoy well nothing MMOish.

Developers don't care about communities or innovaiton, they care about $$$$$$$$$$.

    WoW makes big bank.

    You do the math...

Sad thing in WoW is indoctrinating millions of new plays as to what they think a game is like.  This is what pisses me off about the WoW community.  Most of them talk crap about every game that isn't WoW but they would know a good game from a hole in their rectum because most of the are not gamers...they are followers.

After WoW we will be innundated with millions of uber players who think they are gaming/mmo experts.  And guess what developers will be offering them?  WoW-clones.  $$$$$$$$$$

Actually you you can skip the last two paragraphs aside from that you have the start of a very well informed post.   2nd to last: there'd be far more flamers in this forum instead of the wannabe hardcore.  Last: The amount of time developers have invested into WoW starts counting at mancentries meaning that it makes abosuloutly no sense to copy WoW in many aspects.

You do have a good premise that hardcore forumers aren't a lucrutive market though.   You just didn't go all the way with it.

Exactly! WoW has poisoned the market. Until someone gets the courage to make a new type of game.

This Darkfall I've been reading about might do the trick, if it succeeds. If it becomes a haven for mean gank squads, people might not love it, and then the low sub numbers will turn off potential developers.

What we NEED is a game with a new style. And not just new graphics or theme. We need a game like Darkfall, not because I have any love for that game, per se, but because it has progression concept different from any MMO I have heard of.

And don't say Eve is like it. It is not. Eve is a real time progression of skills you choose. Darkfall has a system where what you do increases your skill in that thing, much like the Elderscrolls games. No, this isn't a new concept, but I haven't seen it in any MMO that had a chance of doing well.

But yes, all current games suck. To the last one.

"Gamers will no longer buy the argument that every MMO requires a subscription fee to offset server and bandwidth costs. It's not true — you know it, and they know it." —Jeff Strain, co-founder of ArenaNet, 2007

    WTF? No subscription fee?

EvE does have progression even if an aspect is stuck in "realtime".

Just admit you ONLY want an MMO exactly how you want it or it doesn't count.   The samething will probably happen to you after you get your hands on darkfall as well.   While your views on EvE alone doesn't say that since that progression is a large part of most games, but saying all games suck certainly does.

That said I never once said darkfall is going to suck.   I actually think it looks very interesting for a few reasons.   And the forumcry that will happen after people see what's really there will be a nice cherry on top.

I'll staunchly hold the view that after spending 5 mins in a game you won't see the graphics of it except for in areas where you're supposed to(extravagent mountain views or the sort).   That's me I'd imagine that it's the same for a lot of people as well.

Of course the post isn't really about WoW it's about every game.   I can't play WoW I require good crafting and I'd perfer not to be led around like some "game math" experiment.

Paulscott I certainly didnt make this thread to agrue with people presently enjoying MMOs, but I am expecting to further articulate my points.

The first one is that today is the first Monday back from a 2 week vacation where I couldn't even be arsed to pick up a free dose of Vanguard for the break.  I had 3 weeks left on my Eve sub that i let rot to dust and I spent the majority of my vacation playing the 4th version of the Civilization game.  All of this made me realize the pandemic problem in gaming: we have a template by which games are made.

Worse, the template makes publishers money! I realized that all new games are nothing more then rehased old ones with the same tired ideas. when this genre first hatched the p&p days were only inches away (some of us still played the p&p).

However with the enhancements in visual animation that have occured we have experienced a complete and utter stagnation in the areas that first brought me to mmorpg gaming:

    imagination & innovation.

the innovations of the gen 2 mmos and the subsequent perception that all new games suck stems from the idea that there aint been nuthin new since EQ days.

This is not the fault of the gamer who wants to be able to feel like the sword of whoopass that he found off the magical rat at the bottom of the cave is important and meaningful.  Its not the fault of the desensitized gamer who just doesn;t seem the point in farming another set of  gear.

Its the "fault" of the publishers who want to build giant and fantastic treadmills. The problem is their becoming more and more obvious about it and the community just eats it all up.

Its the last point that has led me to realize that I am not a mmorpg gamer by any modern definition of the term.  My feelings and situation are the result of innovation and i'm left to conclude there is no real place for my style gaming in this crap hole of a crapptastic crappy games industry.

I encourage you all to sit back and look at exactly how much time is wasted on video games......that in itself shouldnt be too mysterious.  But when you stop to think about how cool things were and how much more VALUE you got for your sub 4 years ago then I really really have to ask how dumb we are to pay to play these games.

Eve has the worst grind of them all: the isk grind.  with eve's messed up risk vs reward paradigm you stil find yourself repeating tasks that dont really add up to any meaningful alter ego experience.  Games need competition and some pvp but Eve makes me want to hate my fellow man in space ......not the experience i always want after spending a day buried in SQL code.

I will give eve this: its the one game out there that comes close to being a sandbox. I have tried to love eve for (30 mil sp) x (2 characters) but the problem with Eve is its a pvp gankfest in sheeps clothing for the crafters.

It is one of the most repetitve games in the pve specturm there is out there but I respect it for being a decent game.  What we need however is something closer to WoW for space - I did not say WoW in space, I said closer.....than Eve because CCP only wants a pvp game.

  • IlvaldyrIlvaldyr Member CommonPosts: 2,142

I still maintain that there is no such thing as a WoW-Clone in the big-budget market.

WoW is a jack of all trades, it's a game that incorporates every element to a "good" standard. It doesn't try to have exceptional and innovative gameplay, graphics or challenge; it's aimed squarely at the "middle ground" of the MMO market, and designed to appeal to as wide an audience as possible.

This is where new MMOs differentiate themselves from WoW. Games such as AoC and WAR put a huge effort into doing one thing as well as they can, and in so doing they neglect the other aspects of the game's appeal. They're not WoW-Clones, they're niche games by design (intentional or otherwise).

Those of us who still play WoW (yes, I am amongst them) do so because it offers variety; I get bored with RvRing for 6 hours straight or trying to resolve the crappy FPS I get due to the fantastic graphics in new games. WoW offers me a comfortable, trouble-free alternative where I can PvE for an hour, pop into a battleground for some friendly and accessible PvP, and never notice any lag or slowdown.

Maybe a better way of saying WoW is the worst thing to happen to gaming.....is to express the genre's fixation on Wow Style gaming (level grind fedex grind etc) ie woW represents the standard in MMOrpg games.

It has taken many aspects of past mmorpg games and put them all into one place very successfully. Having said that I think wow is the perfect representation of the stagnation this genre is facing as a whole.

Developers think to be not like wow they have to put in boring or stupid mechanics which no one likes and some how that makes them different than WoW.....Vanguard is a good example of this.  They have gigabytes of content that no one will ever see because in order to go 'there' you need to be able to fight 3,4,5 dot mobs and that automatically means you need a group.  If they were going to be different they would have come up with something more creative and exposed that content.  Instead Its exactly like WoW except harder to get anything done....this, in conjuction for SOE's total lack of support for that game, makes for a wow knock off.

The only logical reason these developers are missing the mark so bad is because of me. Clearly its me that is the problem relative to this situation.  on the plus side i got some extra money to spend on movies this year.
