number of beta signups/official forum subs breaks 300K

javacjavac Member Posts: 1,175

...and this is with $0 marketing spent. prior to the October 2008 beta announcement, this number was ~70K, so that's roughly 230K new subs in under months, or ~2K new subs per week.

WAR, which spent roughly 50% of its development budget on marketing, had 700K beta applicants.

this is amazing. i frequently communicate with an old friend of mine who's worked in marketing for over a decade and his jaw dropped when i told him. Darkfall appears to be the most successful example of grassroots viral marketing applied to a software product ever.

And thats what there banking on, aka there trump card to show future investors and the reason they are not showing the game.

Why run the risk of losing potential sub's by showing the game.

You know the industry sucked in 2008 when a game not even released yet can win Game of the Year on any of these fansites.

Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware

"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."

Obvious trolls is realy obvious ... making extra accounts on a forum is fun, until you post about it on another forum, then we can all laugh at you.

um... what? are you seriously suggesting *i* alone have created 200K email and forum accounts for the sole reason of posting about it on mmorpg.com?

    let's say it takes 10mins to make an email account and sign up on the forum with it. 200K accounts would then take a single person... 10 * 200000 / 60 / 24 / 365 == 3.8years.

    WTS a clue.

Its amazing how many disciples one can amass by preaching fire and brimstone.

    see AOC for example.

300k forum subs? Yeah, that's plausible; you can build a large community when it's had about eight years to grow. Furthermore, I wonder what percentage of that number are no longer active contributing members to the Darkfall Online forums.

Beta sign-ups? I wonder how many of those are actually IN beta. It's like the lottery: you can have one million people buy a ticket, but there may only be a dozen or so winners.

The bottom line: all this means little. What will matter is sales and active concurrent game subscriptions. Time will tell.

    Isnt that great : )

Now maybe the people that wants to play Darkfall can have like a......community. And all the vaportrolls, haters, naysayers and so on can go and play some other game. With 300k fans we dont need the haters anymore.

Ad maybe that number will increase even more, so we shouldent fix our eyes on it to much.

i guess its just because the world is watching...waiting to see if this game hits the floor or not...personally i hope it gets what it deserves.

Will they be able to handle 300k people wanting to play on the 22nd? I mean will they have enough servers up and running.

I know of quite a few people i have been talking to lately are bored with the current mmo's and are looking for something new. Look at how many people purchased AoC and WAR this year even if neither could hold on to the initial interest.

Darkfall might not be promoting itself but there if a fair bit of interest around as well as just general curiosity. What 750k people decided to try the game on the 22nd?

also like to add, that a game getting insignificant awards and then their cult fan base preaching and worshipping it shows how desperate they are ...

If you want to start playing the game on Jan 22 then you better start downloading the client now. You don't want to be late for the dance.

actually, prior to the October beta announcement, it was 70K forum subs, which has grown to 300K in under 3 months, almost 2K new subs a week. with zero advertising dollars spent.

Hmm... 300K forum subs, eh, and most of them since the beta announcement.

Of course, these numbers are reported by... Aventurine correct?

Right, they've never lied to us before of course.

    Oh wait, yes they have.

Wait..yep, before you say it... I am a troll. (though I prefer the term, severe skeptic)

But hey, they don't need to lie, DF fanbois are famous for flooding any site's polls with calls to artificially inflate the numbers, and it  wouldn't surprise me a bit to find out many DF fans created more than one forum account hoping to increase their chances to get in the beta. (happens in every beta I think, not just DF)

Most probably not. Seriously.. they may have 5 server at max in the beginning, if it all. The downloading of the client alone will be a pain in the ass.(torrent could really be a good idea) But i am more then curios what will happen at this day.

Anyone remember the mess with WAR in europe and the 404 error? hundreds of thousands of possible players unable to get an open beta account and unable to download the client?

I haven't seent his numbers, but you can go to DarkFalls forums and do a generic user search.  All of the registered users have a number.  Go to the last page, and see what that number is.  Then report back (last time I went it was less than 220k)

……I also read everyone who signs up for beta gets a Taco, or was it everyone who buys a Taco gets a free beta sign up? Anyway that’s a lot of Tacos.  300k people wanting to play something for free isn’t anything to boast about.  I have signed up for this beta too, as I had for AoE and WAR and many other games before, I had no intent to play those games and I don’t plan to play this one. Noone is going to know how the game is doing until 6 months after launch.  So, once the game comes out and 300k units are sold there isn’t anything to get worked up over.

Game of the year?  Try most anticipated game of 2008.  it’s the best idea of 2008.  Its true, DarkFall has a lot of great ideas, but I’m going to need to see it.
