It won because more people liked it than any other game on this site.

    LoTRO should have won.

I have played 6 of the top 10 on that list and LoTRO truly IS the best of the bunch-  in my opinion. No. I don't have ADHD but I do love to explore new worlds and give new games a try.  And that 6 games was over the last 5 years:)

I kind of wondered the same thing.  I tried LOTRO.  I thought it was a WoW clone with an even more childish tone, if that is even possible.  I suppose the story of LotR is so great that people could stick through the boring stuff of LOTRO for the story.  I suppose it is well put together for what it is trying to accomplish.  I guess simple is better in the MMO market these days.

I don't see any difference between LOTRO and WoW.

  • Frostbite05Frostbite05 Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 1,880

LOTRO caters more towards classic rpg fans and of course fans to Tolkens works. wow has better endgame and raids but some members of the community are needy 12 year old bratz. Just pick your poison both will have you spend alot of your free time playing

Lotro should have won. It truly is the best of the mainstrem MMOs out there. I played for a couple of months and even though it was not my type of game I can see why it won the award.

Because it doesn't suck.  As far as I am concerned, it's the only game worth paying for right now.  My question is, why the hell is it not rated #1 on the site? WAR got what, about 8% of the votes, yet it has been fluctuating about in the top 3 spots, spending most of it's time in first, for a long ass time.  Looks like too many people are abusing the rating system...

BTW, what do you (OP) think should have won?

The only TRUE answer is: because the rest is far, far greater trash. LOTRO is neither great nor terrible. In a better time it would be an ok game. But as things are, the one eyed is king in the land of the blind.

Im not sure eitehr...i played LoTRO for a little over a month and left out of sheer boredom......My server was pretty much dead and everyone was heading off to play AoC and WAR (MoM had not been released yet).....Then all of a sudden MoM gets released and now people act like its the greatest game of all time??..... Its an OK game but its too much like WoW but with LoTRO lore......The game is too solo friendly and mind numbingly repetitive.......I'm sure in another month or two we will see alot of posts saying the same things that some of us that have played it are saying "was fun for a month", "gets boring if you play alts", etc etc.........If LoTRO is the best game out there right now then this genre is in alot of trouble.

Excellent comment Theocritus.  You nailed it on the head.

Because people don't care about the things you cited (limited grouping, gear is craftable ...)

A good game means that it is enjoyable. The need to group is not essential to an enjoyable game.

    Truth is behind this!

Going from LOTRO to AoC/ WAR ... right because they're aimed towards same people

Leaving a PVE quest based game for PvP game ... I think it would have been cause they were in the wrong game to begin with.

And where do people get the "server was dead" stuff ?

Whenever I go to Hobbiton to farm my vegetables there's like 8 to 10 people farming beside me.

And that happened even at 4am yesterday...

I never looked for a group for more than 5 minutes unless it's an unusual time of day which pretty much all of the games are like that...

There is 3 elements that i think is more inportant than anything else when it comes to Online games.

3 elements that Lotro has, that most mmo games does not share.

1.) *  Lotro has a really mature community, and people like to help outhers.

2.)   *Lotro does not have Raid or Die mentality

3.)   *Lotro is Casual friendly,  and fun to play for 1hour now and than.

LotR is a fine game and the big two releases last year, AoC and WAR did not pull their weight and live up to their own hype.

Lotro cloned World of Warcraft, but because Lotro isn't as mainstream it isn't hated by the "I'm different if I hate the game everyone else is playing" that WoW suffers from.

    Hence, Lotro won.

That's not true, LOTRO is an ac2 clone, like wow copy cat ac2.

LOTRO did in game voice chat WOW copy cat that.

LOTRO did deed's and titles, WOW copy cat that.

LOTRO has barber shops WOW copy cat that.

many other things WOW didn't had time to clone yet like:

    Housing.

    Dye system

    Music

    Legendary Items.

    Outfit system.

    Moria ;)

If LotrO was indeed a "WoW clone" wouldnt people hate it even more than the original?

Scary to see someone so bitter about another game winning a readers vote...

    If WoW = The Beatles
    and WAR = Led Zeppelin
    Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

I bet most the people who voted don't even play any of them games but they just wanted to vote for any game so that WoW didn't win.

Because the world is against WoW , it's the devil.

    Please !

It's like the whole fuss oh WOTLK's phasing system as if is the new sliced bread..

Newsflash in 2007 LOTRO has phasing as early as when you started the game as a Man (Archet was a normal city -> after end of introduction it was burned down and stays that way throughout the game)

Nothing worthwhile was released in 2008 as far as MMOGs go. Basically LoTRO was the least crappy.

    Exactly,

It's getting pretty aggrevating about people saying everyone is copying from WoW.

Hence I even seen such morons on the forums that even went as far as saying that MMO's who released before WoW was even announced, were copying WoW.

    Seriously,

    Get a grip on yourself.

LOTRO won and deserved to win. At this moment it's the most polished and decent MMO out there together with WoW.

Fact remains, that Turbine launched one of the best expansion packs for an MMO todate (Mines of Moria) that helped them winning this title for LOTRO as best overall game.

It finally shows these so called Hardcore gamers that they are just a tiny fraction of the huge Casual gaming population.

    Cheers
