Well since SOE changed the threshold for what constitutes a "heavy" server it's still kind of meaningless, isn't it?

yes...but I am not going to go digging for it for you.
With the recent free server transfers, I'm sure that a lot of people transfered to those "High" pop servers... Leaving the rest even more sparsely populated than they were.
24 buckets of crap still equals 24 buckets of crap, no matter how you re-arrange the contents.
There is no reason for anyone to not be on a high population server, it's a free transfer. And yes if you are stuck on a low pop server you have until the end of March to move.
I can tell you that the people on the 12 populated servers do not care about the other low/empty servers it only matters what is happening on the server you are on.

It's true, they did change it to relfect the fact that a series of ongoing server optimisations means that each galaxy can accomodate more players than ever.

What a load of BS. How exactly did they "optimize" each server? You are simply spouting things you cannot support with any logistical evidence.
If anything, that server statistics have been greatly reduced from past iterations of this game. I would say that "Heavy" in NGE is probably the equivalent of "Medium" in Pre-CU, IF THAT.
It's an ongoing thing, the SWG server infrastructure team has some cool people in it and they manage to squeeze every bit of performance out of these rigs.

Yes they obviously have done some fine tuning on the miracle level.
Seeing as how according to some people.. they now have as many if not more subs than ever.. Somehow they have managed to fit 350,000 subscribers back on the servers... while only a few have the majority of the current players.
When you think about it some of those servers must be hitting 20 to 30 times the load they saw in Pre-CU...
At least there was a link on this forum.. to another forum where some guy was posting that the subscriber numbers had to be higher than ever.

Drop into Mos Eisley or the Restuss refugee camp, these are places that people tend to hang out and socialise before going adventuring or into PvP.
The game world is much larger these days and there is no 10 minute shuttle wait forcing people together in starports, players are spread out all over the galaxy.
There is also a player seach facility that you can use to find others for specific actions like Heroic Encounters, or even to find a guild.
Click on "Community" from the game menu and click the "Search" tab.

Is that why the servers went down last night and have been going down outside of scheduled maintenance periods for months. I dont have a problem with people liking or playing the game but making things up to "support" your position is pathetic IMHO.
I can tell you that the people on the 12 populated servers do not care about the other low/empty servers it only matters what is happening on the server you are on.
Wow...what a community you guys have there...
EVE's Tranquility has about 40K on even on weeknights That's at least 30K more than the NGE across all it's servers.
Is that why the servers went down last night and have been going down outside of scheduled maintenance periods for months. S
There have been a few server crashes recently, I'm check that whatever caused it is being investigated.
I've been TELLING them since the NGE what causes that. It's their piss-poorly designed "super fast" combat engine.
more attacks, more specials fired, more quickly (multiple times a second)= more network packets x more people x more client/server interactions = exponentially MORE lag. This is why CCP, FYI, to reduce lag in large battles, have been making changes that REDUCE the number of server/client interactions. My guess is no one at SOE knows Networking 101. The original Devs CAPPED combat actions at a maximum rate of 1 per second, and that was rarely obtainable, for a GOOD REASON.
More lag+crappy, buggy code+more load=crashed server as well.
I told you all that if they ever DID by some miracle regain Pre-NGE type subscriber numbers and population density the game would be come unplayable.
You are now getting a taste of it now that those from the dead servers have fled to the not so dead ones.
Good luck getting the Devs to acknowledge this or to do anything about it, since it basically means a complete re-do of the whole combat system to fix. I think they are neither capable of doing this nor do they have enough people even if they were to get it done in anything approaching reasonable time.
You will get banned for bringing this up. To acknowledge that this problem even exists would be to admit complete and utter incompetence to have built on this irrevocably broken engine for 3 years which would make them look very foolish.
The real irony here is that the only thing that has EVER made the NGE game playable at all WAS the mass subscriber loss!

No need to check. Its the fact that the server hardware is ANCIENT and not up to the challenge. The pace of the game after the NGE has always been too much for the servers. There are CONSTANT issues because of this. The travel lag, rubber banding, item loss, server crashes, rollbacks etc. I could go on, but I wont.
By all means, enjoy the game. Conversely, understand that SOE are only interested in providing the bare minimum for SWG and realistically, SWG is just a vehicle for the TCG (RMT) testing now. Its in their best interests to keep it on life support, but thats all they will do. Well, that and releasing TCG expansions.
Optimized player health and action pool recalculations.
What was happening is that any time a player was buffed/debuffed and it changed their maximum health and action, the server would handle it inefficiently and this would cause a lot of lag.
They changed this to be faster and are continuing to reduce combat lag on an ongoing basis.

That does nothing to fix the packet flood problem of the TOO FAST and packet intensive combat engine.
That change amounted to a band-aid on a broken arm.
They simply don't want to commit to a real solution because it'd consume their whole rather lackluster Dev team for months to even begin to fix it.

I have a really old PC that I run SWG on, I often get my client lock up because it can't process all the info the server is trying to send in 60+ player battles, but thats my fault for having a rubbish system.
I have friends that have top of the line systems and they dont get the problems I do, I really need to invest in a decent PC.

PS : Chimaera is down AGAIN.
The devs have been looking into key causes of combat lag and recently found a large one and rectified it:
From the Chapter 11.3: "The Battle of Echo Base" Publish Notes, December 2, 2008
Optimized player health and action pool recalculations.
What was happening is that any time a player was buffed/debuffed and it changed their maximum health and action, the server would handle it inefficiently and this would cause a lot of lag.
