Barack Obama signs order to shutdown Guantanamo Bay detention center.

popinjaypopinjay Member Posts: 6,539

Just signed the order to shut down this place a little while ago.

Say one thing about him, he's keeping his promises. It hasn't even been a week yet and he filled this one. :)

He has 3 choices, set them free, send them home,or bring them to the US.

61 detainees that where released form GItmo have made their way back to the battlefield.

Trade in material assumptions for spiritual facts and make permanent progress.

Two really... hes not setting them free lol. They will probably have the majority come to the US, and others in other allied countries. No big deal.

Gitmo deserved to be shutdown. I don't know why we (US) are still in Cuba in this day and age anyways.

    This promise:

Obama, who has been receiving daily national security briefings since his election in November, acknowledged that his campaign pledge to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay will be more of a challenge than he anticipated. Many of those held at the military site are suspected terrorists or potential witnesses in cases against them.

No offense Precursor, but that press release kit is full of stuff to shoot down. It looks like they struggled to make 10 things. Number 10 is simply LOLZ.

Shoot it down then.  I'd like to hear facts to dispute the claims.

Its not about shooting it down or I'm not disputing facts... they just seem silly and a little trivial is all. Just a funny list, lol. Watch...

#10. It's a fact that Amnesty International stated the detention center @ Gitmo has become the Gulag of our times". LOL! Its like the dumbest 'fact' ever mixed in with the other facts. As if Amnesty Int. is the devil or something. Its just a crazy stat in include in "10 facts about Gitmo" hehe.

#2 is a "Captain Obvious" duh one... if you feed someone 4,200 calories a day, they will soon gain 20 pounds. All jails in the US have the same situation, this is not unique. And hello? It's prison food! Yummy... Inmates typically gain lots of weight after incareration due to restriction of movement and confinement all day. Silly fact. Its like saying "Fact: If you go out and sit in the sun for 4 hours, the average person will get a tan" lol.

#3.. I dunno what this one is for. I guess to show they are allowed their religious freedoms? Its against US law to deny this to inmates religion. I'd hope this was the case.

#9.. did the transpancy come before or AFTER Abu Gharib and their fun? It doesnt say.

Again, I believe these to be true facts, they are just so.. mundane. It looks about as important as a sightseer's guide to a new town he's visiting.

But the terrorists!! The terrorists!!! 9/11!!!!! 9/11!!!!!!

Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!

You're very incorrect on this "fact". Special meals to meet Islamic dietary standards were provided to all Muslim prisoners. They also received several hours per day of free exercise and movement in the "yard". They also received time for prayer. They had a better diet and opportunity to exercise than the average prisoner.

I'm sure the average adult caloric intake is somewhere around 2,500 a day. They are giving 4,200. This is a fact, according to the list. Again, of course people will gain 20 pounds, thats almost 2x the recommended amount. You know how much exercise someone has to do to work that off? They ought to have more opportunity to exercise, it doesnt mean they are going to though.

I used to work in a governmental correctional facility and I know what they give you when they say "special diet", there's nothing special about it at all. Its usually just no meat, no pork or gelatin type stuff for the Muslims. The food is basically like those veggie burgers in the freezers or bland beans and overboiled vegetables. The fact that Halliburton overcharges the US government for this "special food" and us taxpayers pay for it, doesn't mean they are getting top notch food, lol.

I think overall the US did a "humane" job of keeping the prisoners. But at the same time we were torturing them, so it's kind of a wash, isn't it? Let's see.. 2x the amount of food, 2x the exercise, and 2x the torture. What a bargain! :)

But its still good Gitmo Detention is shutting down. The base itself is no longer needed in Cuba. It became obsolete many years ago. This sends a very good message to the world that we intend to keep our promises as a nation, not just empty promises.

Hey Jack Murtha has offered to take the detainees into his district.  What'ya say Western Pennsylvania, you ready to accept scores of terrorists into your neighborhoods?  Maybe you can outfit them with ankle bracelets so they'll be easy to track down after they blow your buildings up.

I think if anyone of the prisoners are actually terrorists and end up in some prison in Pennsylvania, I'd hope we'd have the ability to somehow stop them from gaining materials to make a bomb. >.>

    /sigh

The OP is obviously just an Obama fanboy with no real idea or clue about this stuff...and your four "refutations" of that list of Guantanomo facts were incredibly weak ...and I like how you only picked on four, if it's so easy to refute it like you said, why didn't you do it?  instead you provided us with a few "lol" comments and no real substance to back up why this prison was such a "hell hole" as it was put.

Was Obama keeping his promise for change after electing more corrupt politicians to his cabinet in keeping with the status quo?  Oh yeah, that Secretary of Treasury nominee with over 40 thousand dollars in back taxes just SCREAMS change...and let's not forget Hillary, having another Clinton close to the presidency certainly says change to me!

Your argument is like a two legged dog with an eating disorder...weak and unbalanced.

Yeah, it'd also be nice if we could keep them off of airplanes and keep box cutters out of their hands.

    Prison Guard:
"Goodbye! Have a nice trip the USA!"

"Here's the stuff we took from you when we captured you:
    Number 0204; your AK-47.
    Number 0301; your scimitar.
    Number 0155; your briefcase .
Number 0276; your knife. (we had to clean the blood off)
Number 0590; your bowling ball with a fuse sticking out of the top."

"And here's your airline tickets to the USA!
    lets see...
    90 people per plane..."

I heard the people held in Guantanamo never recieved a fair trial.

Truth to this? If so, I believe they should at least have one.

Fair trial?  These are not criminals, they are war prisoners.  They are also not US citizens, and therefore, not entitled to due process under the US Constitution.

    Criminals have trials.

Under the rules of civilized war, prisoners of war cannot be treated as criminals.

There can be military "tribunals" if the need arises of course, but tribunals don't beat around the bush, don't trump up fake charges, and don't release people just because someone forgot to read the guy his rights. The people in charge of a tribunal know what it's like on the battlefield and know what can happen in the heat of the moment. Probably more "fair" than the joke we call the court system.
