A little birdie told me today...

I'll make this short and sweet, and then be gone.  Flame, laugh, or just don't believe me.  Frankly, I don't care.

I thought long and hard about whether I should divulge this precious secret, but with all of the crappy MMORPG's released lately, I had to provide some hope for us online gamers without a home.

It's NOT Darkfall.

It's the combination of efforts of one company that knows how to make online games, and another that is the best single-player RPG developer on the planet.

Turbine, with the blessing and monetary assistance from Bethesda is opening up the world of....

Tamriel

Maybe with Bethesda overseeing things they won't screw it up like they usually do.

    I humble apologize.

I have been hanging around in the DF forums and am a bit jumpy.

Using DDO combat engine as a basis you could make a pretty good Elder Scroll Online.  But that might require a lot of instancing.

I'm not touching any bethesda crap, not after what they did with Oblivion.  GOTY my ass, those guys are all theives if you ask me, because it sure as hell wasn't the GOTY in my books.  Actually Crap Of The Year would be a better desciption.

One of the worst games I've ever seen, and I've been playing games since the early 90's.

To this day, out of my entire game library collection, Oblivion is the only one I've thrown in the garbage.

Obviously everyone has and is entitled to their opinion.  However, the majority of people think Oblivion is a great game, gamers and reviewers alike.  I think it's a great game for being an RPG.

I just hope if the rumor is true the game is sandbox and not themepark.

The setting isn't as important as what they do with it.  If they're just going to take the typical MMO and reskin it as TES, then who cares.  I'll be interested when they point out how they're going to do some thing different.

Oblivion is one of my favorite games of all time. Its a masterpiece if you ask me, and deserves every award it got.

Seems like you're angry about something else.

Well this seems like the obvious choice.

Turbine sticks to the lore very closely. Bethesda was probably impressed with how LotRO kept to the lore and chose Turbine.

While I completely agree with you that Turbine should make that way (variety is a good thing after all).  And while I really enjoy LoTRO and believe Turbine to be an excellent company.  I would unfortunately hedge my bets towards themepark.  It's where the money is at with MMO's these days.  Hopefully I'm wrong...

I hope this is true and that if it comes to fruition, it plays like Oblivion as I found it extremely immersive.

What makes everyone so sure it's going to be similar to Oblivion or that it might be TES online or w/e? How do you know it's not a completely different IP/franchise?

I have to totally disagree with you.  There are enough Themepark games and the general MMO population is looking for new styles of play, which a Sandbox can provide.   I wonder how many people only play their Themepark game because sandbox alternatives are not available yet?  I fall in that category.

There was also a time when a majority of people, gamers and reviewers alike, thought that Final Fantasy 7 was the best video game ever made. There was also a time when people wore bell bottom pants and bought pet rocks. Opinions are a snap shot in time.

I rented Oblivion, played it for a day, absolutely hated that enemies leveled with you and have not thought much of Oblivion since.

Perhaps Bethesda could deter Turbine from its self destructive tendacies, perhaps not.

I dont know how I'd feel about Turbine handling the ES MMO.......Both DDO and LoTRo felt very vanilla to me......ALso while Daggerfall, Morrowind, and Oblivion were all very good single player games they were also only fun for a very short while.......I'm jsut not sure if this series lends itself to long term play like you want out of your MMOs.

The action bits of Oblivion were top-notch.  The RPG parts left a lot to be desired.

Overall I thought it was a good game.  But it went overboard on the leveling, fast travel, and the questlines which were all very carefully crafted to not conflict with each.  Morrowind felt like a single-player MMO.  Oblivion felt like a very well-done but still run-of-the-mill single player RPG.

If they made a game with Morrowind's huge, expansive world and story depth with Oblivion's combat system I'd be a happy camper.
