What I've heard is it's a mod made by fans with a lot of help from Bethesda and Zenimax, far as I can remember want I read, (was a while back) it will use the original game, (yes you will have to own it first to play) and it's a lot closer to happening than we think, i did a quick search and came up with this link from MMOSITE.com*
Bethesda make great single-player RPGs; Morrowind, Oblivion and (to a lesser degree) Fallout 3.
I'm not sure I like the idea of them tossing their hats into the MMO ring; I have the feeling that an Elder Scrolls MMO would either be a spectacular failure, losing the whole immersive feel of the single-player games by producing a generic theme-park grindfest with just an Elder Scrolls skin.
Or, it could be a spectacular success and amass millions of subscriptions, which might well mean that we don't see another single-player Elder Scrolls title for a very long time while they concentrate on their MMO development and expansion.
Playing: EVE, Final Fantasy 13, Uncharted 2, Need for Speed: Shift
Both Turbine and Bethesda have a poor reputation for quality, but the game Elder Scroll has been pretty popular and is a good starting ground. Turbine bad reputation is not based on poor technology, they actually got hat side right, but more on the lack of vision of their games. So I guess this is one of the productions that could go either way.
I'm not touching any bethesda crap, not after what they did with Oblivion. GOTY my ass, those guys are all theives if you ask me, because it sure as hell wasn't the GOTY in my books. Actually Crap Of The Year would be a better desciption. One of the worst games I've ever seen, and I've been playing games since the early 90's. To this day, out of my entire game library collection, Oblivion is the only one I've thrown in the garbage.
its was fun and engaging but i was crushed when i found out it was only the Imperial lands and none of the other (6?) lands in the Elder Scrolls universe.
aside from that i think it was ok and could be turned into an MMO but ONLY if they have more than just 1 or 2 lands (dont care how full of content they are)
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds -Solid non level based game -Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

Oblivion is one of my favorite games of all time. Its a masterpiece if you ask me, and deserves every award it got.
Seems like you're angry about something else.
I wasn't a big fan of Oblivion either and I've been playing TES since Arena (I'm very familiar with TES series)
I just couldn't get into it and didn't care about the storylines. The game wasn't for me.
I quit playing it - it's still on my computer, and I'd rather type this to you, than play that game.
Hopefully, this MMO will not have the things that turned me off of Oblivion.
"The liberties and resulting economic prosperity that YOU take for granted were granted by those "dead guys"
Yeah imagine Oblivion turned into a WoW clone, most of the NPC's have a golden exclamation hovering above their heads like some kind of coding has gone horribly wrong (oh it is supposed to be like it!),
Dear game makers and future WOW cloners
Not everyone is a complete moron with zero skills that we can't even click on a NPC to see if they have a quest or not. Some of us actually like reading or listening to what NPC's have to say. Some of us actually have something called a memory and an ability to learn things like lore and backstory. All MMO's seem to be turning into the one thing they are not and that is World of Warcraft, has anyone seen Runes of Magic, spend a couple of hours to download it and register, the makers are in deep doodoo, because some of the icons are IDENTICAL to the ones in World of Warcraft!
All MMO's are now an amorphous blob of grey grinding, fantasy ladida bollocky non-fun. Give me Super Mario Galaxies and a Wii as antidote.

i agree, and oblivion was also the first game i've thrown away for as long as i can remember. It was fully patched and it had a very hard time running (CTDs and sound problems) it for long periods of time. It had horrible combat and i didnt think the graphics were as great as everyone thinks they are. (and yes i had the graphics set to max)

You need npcs that actually have something interesting to tell then. Instead of the repeating 'randomly pick 1 line out of 10' npcs in most games atm.
I also noticed how sometimes I click accept before reading a quest nowadays. I used to like reading quest stories and backgrounds. Maybe it has to do with the sheer amount of them. With most quests being nothing but kill x generic created crap.
There are exceptions though. The greenskin quests in WAR are fun (if you can stand greenskin english that is), Guild Wars has loads of quests that have links to the main story arc, I remember Vanguard having some funny quests within that UR quest line.
It has something to do with some levelbased games that have very boring gameplay at start. Ive never understood why a character needs to play with only one attack for the first few levels. Why not have interesting story AND combat from the beginning?
The whole 'it starts to get interesting after levelx' is just an incentive for players to rush through content I think. Once you are used to clicking through content, you probably wont stop doing that. Add to that the pressure of some PUGs to rush through quests.
I couldn't really get into Oblivion. It was just kind of run around, do a quest if you feel like it, kinda boring really.
On the other hand I"ve really enjoyed Fallout 3. Now THAT would make a great MMO, but of course you'd have to give up VATS. But I could easily give up VATS. I like the setting, the MObs, the storyline, skills could use some work though. I'd definitely revamp the skills system, make them more useful. Probably beef up hte crafting system as well.
On the other hand, I did like that Oblivion had a lot of stuff to do outdoors. I found the constant dungeon crawling in Fallout 3 a bit claustrophobic. There's only so much dark monster ridden underground sewers, subway lines, and underground medical labs I can take before I want a little sunshine.
Welll... Morrowind was a good game, even the problems with the engine, was slow loading areas. The gameplay was also really different anything may work on a MP game. Everything you don't want on a MMO, but is cool, existed on Morrowind.
Other than that, the coolnes of Morrowind was based on mods, that you can't have in MMORPG.
So if these guys make a MMO, wlll start from zero, and learn the tricks after that, like everyone else.
Originally posted by sekrog I'll make this short and sweet, and then be gone. Flame, laugh, or just don't believe me. Frankly, I don't care. I thought long and hard about whether I should divulge this precious secret, but with all of the crappy MMORPG's released lately, I had to provide some hope for us online gamers without a home. It's NOT Darkfall. It's the combination of efforts of one company that knows how to make online games, and another that is the best single-player RPG developer on the planet. Turbine, with the blessing and monetary assistance from Bethesda is opening up the world of.... Tamriel
Well...I respect your opinion, however...I found Oblivion to be beautiful but boring. Not a big fan of Elder Scrolls although I liked the concept, just wasn't executed well for me. Second..you almost had me when you said THE BEST SINGLE PLAYER RPG DEVELOPER ON THE PLANET...I was about to scream YES, but you ruined it by not saying the obvious answer = SQUARE ENIX. Granted, this is my opinion, but no one comes close to the rpg goodness that SE does. Anyway, I'd play the mmo just because I'm an mmo junky and will always try something new, but I hope they get rid of the first person aspect and give more content than the single player game has.
If an Elder Scrolls MMO is made, I really doubt it will just be a clone of Oblivion. Bethseda will probably try new and different things if they make an MMO. Take Fallout 3 for example. Sure, it was similar to Oblivion in a lot of ways, but Bethseda realized that some things didn't work in Oblivion (like the leveling system, and very little diversity in the voices) and improved upon them in Fallout 3.
I believe that they'll do the same with an online Elder Scrolls. Sure, it could still suck, but I'm pretty excited to see one. The worst thing I could see happening is that it doesn't turn out to be successful and Bethseda just sticks with making their single player Elder Scrolls games.
Currently on a quest to try every free-to-play MMORPG. Okay, maybe not every single one, but most of them.
Its going to be Fallout MMO. The Elder Scrolls thing is just a hopeful rumor started by people unaware that Bethesda is about to aquire the Fallout MMO rights by default very soon (see my oher post here)
I have been hanging around in the DF forums and am a bit jumpy.
That cracked me up
The world of Elder Scrolls would make a fine MMO, not sure I would ‘trust’ anyone to do it, but no doubt it will be completed as it is such a great franchise opportunity.
and it already fails. turbine cannot make a sandbox game. that is the hallmark of oblivion. to be able to go anywhere and be anything.
It’s as if none of you know who turbine is, or how much of this genre they defined.

I could dig an Elder Scrolls MMO. Not really sure how it would work out but I'd like to see!
Doubt it. Bethesda has their own MMO studio, Zenimax

Edit for poor wording, Bethesda's parent, ZeniMax, has launched ZeniMax online for MMO development.

and remembered it wasn't the elder scrolls I really liked it was Betrayal at Krondor that I liked around the same time as arena came out.

I'm playing Oblivion right now, and I'm not that interested in an elder scrolls MMO for two reasons.
1.They will probable add classes for balance which will totally kill it for me.
2.Mods, half the fun for me is playing with all the mods, especially the adult ones.
So for me, MMOizing elder scrolls will just make it another crap WoW clone, instead of the free form adult RPG that I'm experiencing now.
So, no thank you.

A Bethesda MMO would be killer. I am pretty sure I remember reading that they wanted to work on an MMO next (after Fallout 3).
My money says they already are.
