Yeah cause a korean MMORPG that is not going to be anything like a sandbox will really attract the type of players that Darkfall attracts. Nice advertisement though.
Interesting. And where does this info come from? I haven't found anything that says whether or not the game will be sandbox or linear or some combination.
well if there's no info, how the hell will you know it will be competition to DF... (hint: unless its a sandbox pvp and player skill based focused fantasy mmo, it won't)
That does not look very advanced, nor next-gen, just like the same old button mashing hack n slasher with a pseudo combo system.
It's not possible to see from those clips how the characters are controlled.
Both of you could be wrong.
What is next-gen anyway? As long as it's fun to play, I don't care if a game uses "next-gen" combat or sticks to something old.
Have a look at AoC with it's next-gen combat system. It's indeed different, and it's nice to see something new at first. But is it fun after an hour playing? No. You are basically told on screen what key you must press for the combo to succeed.
Who knows, TERA was only recently unveiled. However it is made by many people who worked on Lineage 2 including the lead game director, producer, lead programmer and lead artist, and during Lineage 2's peak populairty, 100 vs 100 was probably considered a small siege.
This is from the Bluehole (the developer of TERA) website:
MMORPG is a game enjoyed simultaneously by numerous players. For long-term enjoyment, initial content volume must be augmented on a timely basis. TERA will appeal to end-users seeking continuous content support without the sacrifice of high quality graphics. Even after a week… a month… a year… the game will pull the player deeper to the virtual world.
The goal is to achieve the world's highest concurrent user load per server!
Players in TERA will not only experience battles with higher concurrent users, but also encounter a revolutionized interaction system for political and economic professions. TERA will offer a stable, non-disruptive in-game social life.
I love how people call it a "grindfest". Aside from the fact the studio states the game is made for a global audience, How long do you think it's going to take to level all those skills in Darkfall?
Ive been to plent of Lineage2 sieges... can we say slideshow??? If NcSoft are doing this new game itll be crap.... and the videos dont impress me looks like an old fighter... NOT next gen
I'd rather do a fat gothic chick who is awesome in bed than a super model who just lies stiff in the bed doing nothing. You get to explore her, mount her, adventure in her majestic caves and fight crabs etc. While the super model just lies there.
and somethings wrong with either/or yalls eyes and heads if you think DF has bad graphics (it is way above avg. except for animation, which is from 5 generations ago (NES :P ))
and yeah, i'd rather have the gothic chick unless I have to fight off crabs... I'm not really into fighting crabs while im f$#$ing
I just felt sad, not to use bigger words, when i read the title of this post.
And it has been worse reading through the full thread. I’m a big fan of Asian Art design in games and also a big fan of the PvP of L2 (The one I liked the most by far over the western PvPs I have played…no no UO or EVE). I have been following Bluehole studios since some months ago because I know that some of the developers of L2 founded this company. At same time I’m waiting for Darkfall to come full of doubts and also with high expectations. If Aventurine delivers, hope so, a decent technical quality game with the major features they announced. Darkfall for sure will be a very good game and something different from what we have right now. I said this to let you know before I go ahead what I think. To the OP: it’s really painful that you come at Darkfall forum to attack the game with a video of a just announced project, we almost know nothing about. If you are so excited about what you have seen in the video and you want to share it with people in this forums you should go to the Pub in these forums and make a post (really there is one about TERA yet) about it. To the offended Darkfall followers: I understand you getting angry about this, I’m too. There is nothing to expect but flame the OP, he/she deserves it. But as all trolls do some of you start talking crap about a game you know nothing. There is very few information about the game right now, but there is some in the Bluehole Studios main page than prove you are just using your imagination and prejudices to make up for false information.
If you want that people respect your game then… don’t think I need to follow. Just one example and the link to backup and give you a bit more info if you are interested. http://www.bluehole.net/eng/eng.html “Facing the mob and repeatedly pressing a skill button is no longer exciting.
Even the unprecedented hit title, WoW, doesn't deviate from the traditional combat system.
TERA introduces a ground-breaking innovation to the MMORPG combat system.
From the start, the company hoped to realize a combat system that would set a new global standard. After careful consideration, it was decided that TERA's fight sequences should closely resemble real fight scenes. Hence, TERA will introduce omni-directional attacks, where distance and direction must be coordinated for weapons and spells to work; moreover, healers must continuously take new battle positions to cast spells. Also, depending on body weight ratio between a mob and player, an enemy hit will register a fall-back reflect. These are some of the innovative features in TERA. Also, unlike games that claim to be a MMORPG by emphasizing action-style gameplay, TERA does not utilize zoning (section loading). All users will seamlessly move throughout the world, sharing a singular combat experience. Moreover, the foundation for the innovative combat system originates from the robust client/server technology. This breakthrough technology is one of the many revolutionary features developed by Bluehole to enhance the end-user experience.” As you cant see no target no button smashing (lol you always have to smash buttons to play a game over the PC) and seamless world. Of course just words and a lot of marketing, but probably they know a lot better what their game is going to be that you do. One thing was good to me in this whole post. It proved to me that it’s time to leave. I was wrong, these boards are not about to share and discuss on MMOs info. They are just a FFA PvP with no rules and very bad graphics. Oh! Sorry no graphics just text. I dont like FFA PvP with no rules at all (yes yes I'm too carebear ...) then Bye Bye gals and guys.
I have to say a lot of people seemed to ignore this post completely. Here is proof that at least the combat system sound very un-korean. They are actively trying to move away from the boring asian MMO play style and more towards realistic combat system with some great fantasy elements and a wide open explorable world.
So to those who cry "korean grinder", or "same old s**t as all other asian MMO's." You just proved you trollness by disregarding a well thought out counter post to that assumption only to favor your own stero types and continue the ignorance of others.
The truth is Darkfall while on paper sounds interesting there is nothing new in Darkfall that has not been done in single player RPG's and other FFA PvP MMO games. Just Darkfall is claiming to have put it all together in one huge (13g client) package.
Darkfall is what it is, and looks as it does. it's an indie game created by a far from consumer friendly company with dreams of grandeur. Done on the cheap over a very very long development cycle. If I had to compare games I would say TERA (while still learning what it is) has promise from a korean company to finally deliver the quality animation and art design that shows the true power of next gen while embracing western game styles that offer open worlds, realistic combat systems.
Darkfall offers tried and true combat systems and open world gameplay most of us have longed for, since the good old days of MMO's. But lets be frank the gritty ugly world of darkfall is something that if I am going to spend hours of my day staring out is simply just not as appealing to look at day in and day out by comparison.
I welcome darkfall as a alternate to "carebear" MMO's. Other than that one simple fact there is nothing else really awe inspiring about it. It's rough and gritty made by a company that is about the same. I have said it before and will say it again. Darkfall will succeed with it's target audience 100% (if it ever delivers.) but that audience is small and meagar in comparison to the overall world of MMORPG's.
And while most of that audience knows and believes in their hearts that graphics don't make the game. 98% of the rest of the gaming world, bases their purchasing habits on how pretty a game looks. If a game like TERA can pull out combat and seamless open world. And do it in a beautiful way... Then people will move to TERA. It's the law of nature, the majority of society and even the animal world bases decisions based on visual appeal. While the majority of the world fawns over the supermodel the darkfall crowd lusts after the overweight, goth chick in the corner with more piercings than 100 ring binder.
No matter how bored we may get of the shallow supermodel most of us just can get i bed with the fat goth chick. Slap TERA animations and graphics on Darkfall and you may very well acheive the grandiose dreams you have for darkfall changing the world of MMO's.
So for those of you who deny the weight of graphics on a game. Good for you for your not being shallow like the rest of us. And I hope your deep meaningful relationship with the fat ugly goth chick goes well. That is if she ever gets over her foul mood long enough to get in bed with you. (Vague symbolism to fact that game is still not out yet.)
I'd rather do a fat gothic chick who is awesome in bed than a super model who just lies stiff in the bed doing nothing. You get to explore her, mount her, adventure in her majestic caves and fight crabs etc. While the super model just lies there.
These two posts were a very funny and witty read. Thankyou both
I notice you still talk about graphics, animations and that crap and not about full loot in a topic about "combat" .. What the hell you all who argue with graphics think is combat for ? to look good ? lol ... What the fuck is having 10 wonder moves to kill someone any better if you can't loot or to fear get looted and loose your gold , your ship, your home ? Sure sissies ..DF isn't for you. Don't forget to make up before entering combat lol
Those are fair points. I have no idea about the full features that are on offer in those Korean games.....so it is indeed rather difficult to compare it to Darkfall. They could be so utterly different from each other that they may very well just end up appealing to totally different kinds of players.
I like the features that are allegedly on offer in Darkfall so I'm looking forward to trying it out. Then again I might give one of those korean games a go too. If Darkfall does deliver on all of its features then that will be great.......however there really isnt any escaping the fact that those korean games look a LOT more polished than Darkfall does. Despite what some people say graphics and fluid decent animations DO matter a hell of a lot. But who knows maybe the games look and play great but are actually very limited. We will just have to wait and see wont we.
your mistaken about the graphics crap, because first look at WOW's graphics and compare that to their playerbase. Also, if you have high graphics it requires more from your rig, which could be a reason why aoc has a small playerbase. Not many people CAN play it, and those that can hated the gameplay. GAMEPLAY matters most if you have no gameplay obviously you have no game.
Look at this video www.youtube.com/watch this is what darkfall combat animations should have looked like
Darkfall was never meant to be the best looking game, though even with that said it still looks fantastic. I don't think you understand that Darkfall was meant to be a very different game from the mainstream. I highly doubt this TERA game has a skill based system, twitch based combat, a huge, expansive world without instancing, and FFA full loot PvP anywhere, as well as clan cities and sieges.
In fact, I'm certain it's not. Enjoy your polished Korean WoW clone.

How can game sell like this its just beyond stupid.
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009..... In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.

Excuse me for being a little late in this conversation and I'm not sure if anyone else answered this.
But why the fuck would I want this in an MMO game? Care to explain? Does that make the battle any better? And if you think that it's better, then why the hell are you in this forum, as it's quite certain DF isn't the game for you. A game that tries to be as realistic as it can be.
Anyway, to answer you, if I would like to do the things you said, I would have probably played Street Fighter, not Tera or BnS.
Yes you were a little late on the topic. I was pretty much claiming that Darkfalls PvP/combat system was better/more realistic than the ones shown in the TERA and Blade and Soul video clips.
I was also pointing out that fancy, over-the-top combat moves don't really have a place in PvP combat.
Maybe you should read at least SOME of the thread before posting.

Lol, this game looks like what the Darkfall devs said they were going to develop eight years ago, but never did. This TERA game craps all over DarkFAIL. I bet the DarkFAIL developers feel kind of bad when they see that some guys in Korea actually developed the game they wanted to develop but could not. Instead DarkFAIL looks like just a really REALLY crap version of a fps game. Planetside anyone?

Speak for yourself. Over-the-top combat moves are EXACTLY what its all about. Sure, knifing you to death is nice and all. Flipping you into the air, cutting you a few hundred times, loading your corpse with a few thousand slugs, and then curb-stomping you at the end is WAYYY more satisfying to me, personally,
If its not for you...then...I don't know what the hell IS wrong with you. If I wanted "realism" I'd just go to your house and ACTUALLY punch you in the face. In that particular scenario...yes, "realism" WOULD be more satisfying. It would also land me in jail. A man takes what a man can gets.

But that sword should but half as long!
I always thought the coolest game ever would be an MMORPG version of the SNES game Terranigma. Did you ever play that one?
This is a similar concept to what the TERA game looks like. There used to be a distinction drawn between action RPGs and regular RPGs, and the action RPG style always had much more potential in MMORPG format imo.
yeah, the graphics look cool, but if you go to http://tera.hangame.com/ the site is in korean. I tried to use babelfish to translate it, it's like all the korean on the page is done with graphics or flash so babelfish can't translate it. I navigated through the website anyways to try to gain some knowledge from the different pictures. it looks class based. but, since I can't read korean, I can't be certain. I made some assumptions of the different classes based upon the pictures but assuming things isn't fair and since I can't read I can't be 100% certain of anything. If someone could read and translate the korean, that would be nice.
in ref to class-based vs sandbox: personally, I have seen people complain about class balance since EQ. and I remember someone taking the class I loved the most, mage, and reduced it to nothing but a mana-rod spiter as though that was all they were good for. and I played WoW since just after it went live and I've seen enough people complain about nerfs be it "my class got nerfed" or "I don't know how to beat this class so, it must be too powerful... NERF IT!" I want to see a decent sandbox and build my own character and screw the whole class-based setup. Until darkfall goes live, I'll just play ryzom.
Yeah cause a korean MMORPG that is not going to be anything like a sandbox will really attract the type of players that Darkfall attracts. Nice advertisement though.
Just kind of curious but.. do you play any games, or do you just post on MMORPG ? You hideous avatar is too frequently displayed on my browser.
How dare you present him with logic! Don't you understand? He fights epic fights, in epic games, with epic toons....eats epic food and takes epic dumps! He has more e..pic..icity...ness in his little finger than you have in your whole unepic body! - ChicagoCub
Well, I am certainly not a Darkfall fanboy, but I haven't seen a single game mentioned in this thread that I would rather play than Darkfall.
What are you guys smoking? That TERA thing looked awful! The graphics looked OK and reasonably solid, but the gameplay demonstrated in these videos looked incredibly dull. And that sword just makes me shake my head in bemusement.
I think part of this is I simply don't like anime characters. I don't like when women have huge breasts, cutesy noses and insanely big eyes - they don't look sexy, they look creepy. And I don't like my male heroes to look like some gay teen, barely through puberty.
Also, the asian game market seems hell bent on forcing their idead of 'heroism' down your throat. They always seem so scripted. But these are supposed to be games - not movies! Let us decide what our character looks like and how he behaves.
I must admit, I am slightly worried about the MMO market. Asia has a hell of a lot of potential customers, and if they all want this drivel, maybe that is all we will have to choose from in 5 years.

Drivel to you, best games in the market to them.
Honestly, the American/Non-Asian MMO development is dying, take a look at how many Asian MMO companies there are, and look at how many games their are spewing out, compared to the games that come out here.
Sure, some of them may only have 5000 people playing at a time, but games like Aion already have subscribers in the millions (in their country alone(Korea)), not to mention release in China and North America. When you compare Warhammer to Aion, Warhammer looks like a complete and utter failure. The market over there is MUCH larger than here, and it will remain so.
The only way to make a very succesful MMO, with a large subscriber base is to attract the Asians.
EDIT: I like those swords, and the reason they are so big is because it's illegal to own swords in Korea, so they compensate in game by making them look fucking cool.
"The only way to make a very succesful MMO, with a large subscriber base is to attract the Asians."
You do realize that the subscription model is a totally different animal in the Asian market, and that subscription numbers are a "little" misleading. Right?

True, however Aion (out in Korea) is currently a subscription based game, not a cash shop. It is currently doing very well, not too mention it's upcoming release in China, then EU/NA.
EDIT: Digging up some sub info, it's currently valued at US $14.99 per month in Korea.

Just a tad, but if we're going to go in to the whole misleading thing, then let's talk about WoW's 12 million subscribers.
But anyways, Aion (out in Korea) is currently a subscription based game, not a cash shop. It is currently doing very well, not too mention it's upcoming release in China, then EU/NA.
Nah, don't care to talk about WoW. That's one of those games I go back and play for a month or two every other year or so.
As far as the other games. I am just not a fan of Anime, plain and simple.

Do you think Darkfall devs were worried when soul calibur or street fighter came out? Nope.. so why would they with this horrible korean button masher skilless game which probably has no player owned cities, FFA PVP, looting, or ANYTHING good.
Look at this video www.youtube.com/watch this is what darkfall combat animations should have looked like
You come up with some random promo vid from a MMO that is nowhere near to release and post it in a forum about a completely different MMO? Just for the animations? Sure, why not. Its not as if a MMO is more then combat animations

Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
Lol, this game looks like what the Darkfall devs said they were going to develop eight years ago, but never did. This TERA game craps all over DarkFAIL. I bet the DarkFAIL developers feel kind of bad when they see that some guys in Korea actually developed the game they wanted to develop but could not. Instead DarkFAIL looks like just a really REALLY crap version of a fps game. Planetside anyone?
The one and only.

I think not only Aventurine might be worried after watching that video. It has caused a real impact and for good reason.
But that sword should but be half as long!

The one and only.
yeah, the graphics look cool, but if you go to http://tera.hangame.com/ the site is in korean.
Right?

Hmmm interesting vid. Reminds me of Hellgate on steroids.

Go back to your fighters you wouldnt last in DF
hm first time i heard about TERA.
watched some vids and it sure looks fun and well polished.
lovely animations and spells. the game looks alive.
i wont compare with darkfall cause its no point and i dont know anything about TERA gameplay anyway.
will keep an eye out for it.
You come up with some random promo vid from a MMO that is nowhere near to release and post it in a forum about a completely different MMO? Just for the animations? Sure, why not. Its not as if a MMO is more then combat animations
just saw this: www.youtube.com/watch and im in love with it
