congrats for 'getting' what eve is all about. Good luck and fly safe! (won't offer to give you my ingame name so you can 'hit me up'. I like to help newbies, but like to piss people off more, and anonimity is to ensure i can do that in future )
Seems 12 year old griefers join games so they can do this very thing. Tell me; what is the appeal?
Is it the fact that you are anonymous, causing trouble, that gives you a thrill? I left WoW after 2 years of playing because of players with this very same mentality. Please: What is it that motivates a person to do this?
You don't know how aggresssion works in Eve Online. There is High-sec, low-sec, and 0.0 space. High-sec is patrolled by Concord (NPC police force) if you attack anyone who is no flash red (at war with, is a pirate, or took something from you're can) concord will show up in 10 secs and kill you. So you are pretty safe in high-sec space, CCP made the penetly for sucide ganking someone very steap. So while there is a little griefing there isnt much. Were you will run into the real trouble is in low-sec space. This is were most of the pirates are at in Eve Online, there is no real safe spot in these areas. The jump gates have sentury guns on them, but most ships can tank them and still manage to kill you. Then there is 0.0 space, this is run and controled by players. This is were the huge fleet battles (blobs) take place. If you go into part of 0.0 and are no set blue to the alliance in control they will kill you. The exception to this is CVA 0.0 Space, its run by an alliance that has carved out part of 0.0 to be like high-sec space. As long as you are neutral CVA will not kill you.
Now i work as a Merc in Eve Online, so ya my job is to put an end to conflics people start but cant finish on there own.
And Eve Online is about KILLING, COMPLETETY DEMORALIZING YOURE OPPONENT INTO SURRENDING TO YOU. Its a crule dark world, if youre not able of defending yourself join a alliance that can offer you protection or just dont play. Its a PvP game and a really good one.
The area that the poster above me is talking about is called "Providence", CVA own this region and allow neutrals to dock and use their space. They have "holder" pets who own some areas of the region and are forced to abide by CVA's rules, however, some of these pets interpret the rules differently and will shoot at people in NPC corps, or if you are "acting suspiciously", or for agressive acts such as locking someone.
There are also people like me. If I see you in Providence or CVA friendly areas of Catch, or with "CVA friendly" in your bio, I will shoot you, and I will pod you. Im not interested in ransoms so please dont insult me by trying to buy me off. I want you dead.
I truly enjoy playing EVE as it is the only MMO I have ever experienced where I can "play a game of wits" against those that wish me harm.
I find little pride in outsmarting an AI, but I take great pride in surviving and doing operations in EVE that others fear to do alone and need to be in a group to handle. I am all alone, I do not need others to protect me because I am smarter than those that wish to harm me.
Fact is, that there a plenty of modules and ships (especially the covert operation types) that allows you to move around and do your little things out of sight and out of harm. If you pay attention and know your tricks it is impossible for somebody to find you in EVE. Space is huge after all.
As such, I am actually dependent on the "griefers" (or whatever you call them) because they play the part of the opposition in my little "single player" game, and they do it far better than any AI could do.

LOL! all these rules man!!
Here's my deal. If you arent Blue or green to me you die. Unless you are in a newb starter ship your ass is mine I don't give a shit, If not one on one then ill eat your ass along with my 15-20 friends.
I don't kill starter ships since I feel that makes players leave the game before they even begin and personally I would like Eve to have a larger community so I can gank you later when you have something of value.
Some people want to play the role of Space Pirate. Who doesn't that appeal to? It sounds cool. You get to say "YAARRR!" a lot. You're an outlaw, living on the fringes of a frontier society. When in history has that role not been romanticized?
Romanticized indeed. And in Eve, just like in real life, when you get down to it, pirates are selfish petty criminals, content to take the path of least resistance.. or perhaps the only path they can figure out.
Hey, I'm GLAD there are pirates in the game... it would fall apart without them. Just don't kid yourself about what you are if you choose that road ; )
I find that odd. You seem pretty clear on the idea that pirates are needed, but yet you find it necessary to insult us. I'm guessing you have some hostility toward pirates that you are keeping to yourself.
No matter, as always, when applying a broad brush you are just as likely to be wrong about individuals as you are to be right.
In my case, it has nothing to do with the path of least resistance or what I was able to figure out, and it has everything to do with FUN!
I live in lowsec. I am there with the notion that anyone who comes there comes with the notion of having already consented to PvP and they should be able, by whatever means, to take care of themselves. I put that notion (their notion and mine) to the test with every engagement, whether I am the aggressor or the aggressed. Often, I am the victor of these engagements, but not always. Either way, I have a blast doing it.
Little thin skinned for a pirate there aren't you mate?
You shoot people that you don't know for fun and profit. Does this mean you are a sociopath in RL? Of course not. Does it say something about your personality that doing this brings you pleasure? I think so.
When I joined Eve 4 years ago I was all fired up about the idea od space piracy. Got the skills and ships I needed, then went out... still remember the bestower I locked as it decloaked in Iges in placid. I was in a rax, and the guy was gonna go down quick.
Then I remembered all the work I had done to get to where i was.. wondered how much time and ISK the guy had put into his ship and cargo. I realized I had no desire to attack someone I knew nothing about.. the thought actually sickened me (yeah, I know it's a game but the thought of randomly adding to someone elses suffering even in a small way turned my stomach). I realized I wouldn't enjoy eve at all if I wasn't true to the way I am in real life. The guy was like "I'll pay you ransome not to blow me up" and I was like "nah, go ahead.. would ruin my day if I blew you up anyway."
Luckily for the eve economy and for players like me there is no shortage of people happy to blow up anyone they can get in their sights. Based on my experience and my gut, however, yes.. i do make a value judgement about people who have fun pirating/ scamming/ etc. The griefers are even below these people because they seem to be ALL about causing suffering with no regard to their own economic gain.
I have often believed that you can learn alot about people when you see how they behave in a completely anonymous world with no one enforcing restrictions on their behavior. I love eve because it gives you that choice to "look out for number one" or decide you are going to try to work cooperatively in a virtual world where that isn't always easy.

Yes, I am a selfish, petty criminal content on taking the path of least resistance, or maybe it's the only path I can figure out........and no, I don't think I am some revolutionary or some sh*t...I'm a f**king pirate!!!! AAARRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!....and I'm not kidding myself

im actually a nice guy, and am on reasonable terms with more than a few of my most hated enemies.

Sorry if I ruffled any feathers. We're all friends here and we all love the game. For the record I'm competetive as hell too... been living in NPC 0.0 for the better part of 4 years.. I think that's a requirement out there. Don't think that I don't understand extremely well (said it already 3 times in this thread) that no one would EVER sell anything in eve without piracy and the NBSI folks.
I won't back down from the belief, however, that drawing pleasure from others' pain or loss (even virtual) says something about the fundamental makeup of a person. I know (or hope at least) that everyone that plays the game refrains from engaging in destructive antisocial behavior in the real world regardless of in game tendencies. But is it possible that this hints at what people might tend toward if the social contract didn't exist? Lord of the flies was an interesting novel : )
I actually have a chance to do some post grad psych research and you guys might have helped me decide what I'm going to look into.
You guys might call me a carebear or what have you, but I'll fight like hell with reckless abandon if circumstances dictate in the game. I just prefer to reserve my hot plasma for those that have "earned it" in my book.

You didn't make ME at all angry, friend...I mean, it's all fun and games when we play GAMES right?
I understand how you can say someone playing a game who draws pleasure from the suffering of others might be a bit...well...off...........but, in my case, and I'm sure in many other cases, the murder, well, it's for the money.
I mean, why feel bad for a player who spent all of their time and hard earned ISK on their ship? They are playing EVE aren't they? They know what can happen in a game like this.....it's a risk....to me, that adds to the fun.
I can get popped as quickly as I can pop someone else.
But because I kill a bunch of folks in EVE for profit, I must have some sort of psychological issue right? I mean, that is what you're saying isn't it?
Yet, I go and play LotRO and spend most of my time helping lowbies....I mean, I've been on Level 18 for like a month!...but I like it, it's fun to help out the new players...I mean, we were all there once.
So now I jump to EVE and I say "ya know, forget helping people, maybe I'll pop'em for cash."
It's fun to try something different. That is part of the reason some of us play games...for me, that is why I roleplay.....I don't Roleplay as myself, I pretend to be someone I am not.....someone as far from me as possible. I'm no pirate on the streets, and I'm also not a parnetless Ranger from Rohan (LotR for those who may not be familiar).
But seriously, you're not making us "criminals" mad......like you said, we are all friends here. It's only a game....once again....let's have fun with it.
PLAYING: NOTHING!!! PLAYED:FFXI, LotRO, AoC, WAR, DDO, Megaten, Wurm, Rohan, Mabinogi, RoM
You know, I didn't even think about the profit, and you're right. But my problem is with the folks who don't do it for any thing but a sadistic kick, knowing full-well the person they killed is going to be upset (And often look for the person to repeat the act). Sure, in a full-loot game, you can't really find out without asking, but it's often pretty easy to notice.
I mean, EVE wouldn't be any fun without pirates and the like, right? But I definitely think Darkfall will have a very different community.

I know what you are saying about those who kill entirely because they know they are ruining someone elses fun.
When people do that, well, that is a problem...that's just being a d**k head.
Doing it for profit in a game where money is everything...well, that's just playing the game.
I do hate griefers, they are immature brats who are so bored with their lives that they have to ruin other peoples fun.......I never do what I do to ruin another players fun, I just do it to progress in game. I just choose to do it a different way than you.
But, you're cool
You see where the other gamers are coming from...
PLAYING: NOTHING!!! PLAYED:FFXI, LotRO, AoC, WAR, DDO, Megaten, Wurm, Rohan, Mabinogi, RoM
Well, I mean, I like the sandbox genre. Sure, I think of myself more as a good guy and would never attack anyone without first being attacked (Firm beliver in self defense only, online or off), but I like to have different types of players. Communities in sandboxes should be melting pots. Like you said, in EVE, you know the risks. You risk your current ship when you venture into low-security space.
I'd just like to see a lot more "defenders of justice," like myself, in said games. :P (I thought a lot of people actually liked Batman. Enough to emulate him, at least. ;P)

YOu haven't ruffled any feathers that I am aware of, and not mine for sure. You are right, you can tell something about a person by his ingame actions, but I still think you've got it wrong.
If I win at a game of chess, does the loser feel anguish? Or football, does the losing team suffer for their loss? Or basketball or hockey? In the area of business, what about the CEO that made a bad choice and is pushed out of competition? Does he feel pain?
And what does it say about the victor in any of these endeavors? Should they not feel good about their victories? Sure, gloating over them would be pretty low, but a person can relish a victory without gloating.
I just don't understand why you seem to think the victor is the bad guy just because he is the victor.

How about a little respect?
Yeah. Seriously, man. Show some tact.
