Cryptic Announces No Ship, Starbase Interiors

Link

That's right, folks, no ship interiors except beyond mission instanced episodes.

Guilds will not have interiors for starbases or capital ships either.

No bridge, no quarters, no corridors, no holodeck, no sickbay, no engineering, no shuttle bay, no astrometrics.

This kills the game for me. I won't play a dumbed down WoW clone.

No player bridge crews either.

Is this even Star Trek anymore?

I haven't been following this game in months...

So you're basically saying this is gonna end up being hybrid between WoW and a dumbed down EVE?

Doesn't sound too great... and by the time STO releases, we should be able to at least walk in stations in EVE.

Oh well... can always hope the ship combat and such in STO makes up for it I guess.

as a non star trek fan this news pretty much seals the deal on whether i will play or not.  Until i get a SWG like experiance in space i will be avoiding space for quite some time.

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

The source you linked does not show were he got his information. So, unless there is a official post or an official cryptic interview we do not know yet.

I believe that it came from the HF interview at Comic Con... I'd give you the link but I got the whole interview in an update email I got for HF so I don't have one.

As for STO I was extremely disappointed with the recent revelation that the game would be heavily instanced but that I figured I could forgive but this... Congratulations Cryptic you just lost one of your biggest fans on this site! Until they put PSI's in the game I won't be playing as it was the one thing that this game had over PE's version and EVE. Hopefully they will change their mind if there is enough uproar over this but I highly doubt it. So long STO, maybe I'll join you in an expansion down the road but no PSI's at launch means no Bren paying you money to play!

I did read the whole thing several times but until they add the part in red they can shove their game where the sun don't shine!

So what? I care more about exploring worlds than I do my own ship.  We've known a long time this wasn't going to be Second Life in space, so what is so shocking about this?

I read the whole thing. Just because the guy says "CZ said............." it does not mean that it is true. The guy who posted that is not a cryptic employee or professional reporter. Other wise I would be able to make up statements that can not be proven.

You know, in my book they got the ENTIRE Trek game wrong from the start. I dont have anything against EVE, but being a ship and playing always in black space is entirely not my cup of tea. I want my MMO be a social space, and that demands in any Star Trek MMO to be on board of a ship or space station as crew member, as part of a social environment. I dont want to be alone on my starship! That entirely beats the sense of playing a Star Trek MMO for me! My dream was being crew of a starship or station with my friends, not soloing with my ship through black space. Of course also vast planets to explore and make a living on. I mean, Star Trek cant be some mere spacefighting game. That would reduce the very idea of Trek. Trek wasnt EVER mainly about space combat or space wars, but about friendship, about teams and cooperating, about "human" interactions.

There already is one EVE, and that is sufficient. I never felt the entire idea and heading of the Star Trek MMO is right, and this just confirmes it for me. Gawd, they are SO going to loose with this.

So basically, if you could wander around your ship but couldn't really do anything in the process, that would make the game so much better for you than if they skip that because it's pointless?  I'm all in favor of finding reasons to criticize games, but that one seems kind of pointless.

What is Star Trek about, anyway?  Is it about going wandering around in some stodgy old starship in a view that makes it look like you might as well still be grounded on earth?  Or is it about boldly going where no man has gone before, whether in the vastness of space or in instanced mission episodes where there is actually something to do?

  • ICEBLUEICEBLUE Member UncommonPosts: 58

I agree with the last post, being inside the side is not what the Star Trek universe is about. It will be nice if they add the interiors at some point, but the exploring and instancing in this game will be the core that most of us will look for.

Of course wandering an empty ship would be pointless. The game got the wrong turn already, when they decided to make 1 player = 1 ship. They kinda lost me then already, but I had hoped they would put more value on the social aspect of the game. Seems its the entire other way around, and its all EVE2. As if the world needs another EVE. /sarcasm off

On a sidenote, I got the impression Cryptic is quite an unprofessional company when it comes to dealing with critique. Both in the Champions forum as well as in the STO forum I have seen they have a very bad habit of closing threads for mostly dubious reasons, when a thread speaks negatively about the game. Its one thing which is a big no-no for me. I face those who critizise me headon, and I expect the same of others. Locking threads is something to be done with really bad mouthed attacks. It shows a kind of lack of self esteem and lack of respect, and little pisses me off so fast and profound than any form of censorship. Kinda makes me keep some healthy distance from anything this company creates.

Just take the weridness Champions is. This company has just no clue about making a MMO OR about dealing with people. I heard enough news from friends in the beta(s) of their games to be suspicious and this is just another proof about these guys cluelessness.

All I can say is I am glad I am not a game designer for this game.  OMG...imagine the difficulty in creating such a game.   How do you make it feel like an MMO when a lot of the players are scattered across the galaxy onboard other ships?   If you did allow everyone to be a captain then does that mean you are in control of NPC's, like the medical officer, the engineering officer, and if so, how do you interact with them, how do you command them in all the different situations you may encounter?   if you could see your character on the bridge and could move around and such, how do you set up controls that allow you to interact with the NPC's or your bridge so that you can command the ship and get things done.  So much going on.

All I have to say is good luck to Cryptic on this one.  They are going to need it.

  • severiusseverius Member UncommonPosts: 1,516

Well for one thing it is entirely hearsay.  Furthermore in the quote Cryptic says that they hope to add it in later.

Now, for myself I can care less if there is any ship interiors apart from the bridge.  Everything else is pretty much unimportant, apart from engineering.  I have zero desire to check in on sickbay, if the game is entertaining I see no reason to play a different game from the holodeck, and I really don't want to go and "hang out" in ten forward.

I just hope cryptic is able to make a fun game and overcome the curse which has hung over Trek games since Klingon Academy.

Well they hired Bill Roper the epic fail of the industry. That speaks volumes about the company itself. I seriously hope for you Star Trek fans out there that he is not involved with this project in any shape or form

Heh, talking about preferrences here. I was an entertainer in SWG, I LOVED just to hang out with people for hours. Tbh, I on the other hand find the idea to be always looking at my ship hull in some space combat boring. I had hoped STO would offer a vast variety of things for many different people and not narrow towards one target audience, the space combat geeks.

Everyone I just came up with this crazy idea for those that want ship interiors! Play it when the expansion comes out, and do not buy it at launch. I know it may seem impossible for people to you know, not try every damned MMO ever but I tihnk it could work.

Î dont know why a person who has an opinion and fights for his ideas must be ridiculed like that.

Isnt Star Trek so much more than just space fighting? I mean, if you like a mere space fighting game thats fine, but why does Cryptic misuse the Star Trek IP for such a limited and narrow MMO concept, when there are already good space fighting MMOs out there and more to come? Its just a waste of the good and rich Trek IP imo.

Well, that officially ends my interest in this game.  Talk about aiming low on expectations.  They might as well just shut this project down because the core fanbase of this franchise will expect ship ambulation out of the box, not on some potential future expansion.  Seriously, if you can't walk around and interact in ships, how is this even remotely Star Trek? When you group in space for exploration or battle, will you have groups of 5 ships? How rare was a battle like this in *ALL* of the Star Trek shows and movies?  In most cases, other ships were so far away, the captains didn't even bother to call for help.  Yet here we are, getting a game that tries to break the Star Trek IP in every way possible.

All of you people who don't understand why we are angry about this, you really couldn't have been following this game since it was announced.  Each new bit of news seems to bring another disappointment.   Now it just sounds like another 'dead on arrival' game launch waiting to happen. I swear some of these game companies just pray for strong box sales knowing the game is going to tank no matter what. Expecting people to give a rip about this game because you think there might be ambulation in a future expansion is simply ludicrous.

I might also point out that EVE players have been asking for ambulation for years now, and are finally about to get it.  Why would any modern game of this type start without it?

A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.

Yeah between that and "instanced episodes" i have lost the only reason to follow this game

I am a fan of star trek but not a hard core fan so i can understan why hardcore fans are freaking out about how this game is beeing made but come on did anyone think this was going to be just like the TV shows ?

no mmo will ever be a vertual world anymore they are all made to be casual games, so to make a game like the hardcore fans want would be to time conusming for "newer" gamers of today so sorry guys you are never going to be happy with what they put out, only way you will ever get the game you really want is make it yourself
