I'm a carebear and I say Darkfall is going to be great.
There is a difference between...
-WOW/WOWClone: your grinding out quests, and everyone knows where you are because they did the same quest 50 times, then it's easy to PK you cause it's easy to find you.
-Darkfall example: Since this isn't a Forever-andEver-quest game, the PK'er will not know where you are, it would take more effort to track down players if there isn't a quest arrow. Not to mention there is no auto-lock so you can hide behind objects while trying to escape.
There is a bunch of good points here on what Griefing is,.. A griefer can have nothing to do with killing. Killing most of the time is not part of the mindset. Greifers like In UO or diablo was probly when they were first born. A giefer could try and make a trade window open over an over to prevent you from playing, They could block an inportant npc you need to talk to. Anything out side of the games concept they will try and take advantige of. 90% of the time its really not part of what the developers had intented. Griefers can be found in peacfull games like WOW alot more, theres more game mechanics preventing you from stoping them. With that said, you intend to have a site where griefers can meet and talk,. if they are true griefers the last thing on there mind is to play by the rules. They will do what ever it is they can to prevent your concept from working and try to ruin it, and that is griefing. If you feel you are a griefer, then playing the game is really not your intention, and your a idiot.
Absolutely correct.
The first time I was griefed was in UO. You know in UO how you would drop a pile of ORE on the ground cause you could only carry so much, then you picked it up, then dropped it again, closer to the smelter. Repeat this step about 40 times and you r at the smelter with a bigass pile of ORE. Well some invisible player picked up my ore, and he couldn't move either, if he wanted to get to the smelter, he would have to drop it again, then move then pick it back up. So we both had a standoff for about 30 minutes, I told him I wasn't moving, and he wasn't moving either.
He was griefing because neither party gained anything. The other party was just causing me grief for no good reason.
You see, the difference is clear. PKers and Griefers see the clear distinction between the real world and virtual reality and also see how some players have a very unhealthy emotional dependency on their pixels, and exploit it. It's not our fault someone has emotional and social issues and gets too seriously involved in a game. Dying or losing some pixles in a game should absolutely not affect your state of mind. If someone is having a serious emotional distress because of a virtual game property damage, they need a serious check up.
Actually I believe griefers are more likely people who would readily take advantage of any situation to fill their own needs, hence they seek easy gains in games, but I would expect them to also perform similar (not necesarily as extreme) actions in real life. Im not picking you, or your acquaintainces, but Im sure if you left your wallet out with no one watching some in game griefers would likely take some liberties, wheras if someone can display superb moral character in an anonymous game, I would think them less likely to take advantage of your open wallet in the real world. I believe that some level of a person's ethics can be attributed to their actions in a game.
When I play pvp games, which I do love, I do not seek to cause players in that game to have a bad experience, as a griefer would. I enjoy conflict with purpose (guild vs. guild, hunting down griefers/bots, etc...) because: I do not wish to drive players from the game or have them do the same to me (personal gains here), but I don't really care if they do because in the end it is just a game. Im not saying Im a morally superior person at all here, just don't think that "griefing" is a good or justified thing in any form.
Cheers!
I tend to agree. Though I love to PvP, I don't enjoy killing that newbie player that's 30+ lvls lower than me. I like the thrill of killing someone of equal strength or greater. That's more of a rush.
Griefers enjoy it so much because it's what's they can't do in RL. That sense of dominance compensates for inequalities in their own social skills. Someone who likes pain will like to receive as well as give it, but griefers who prey on weaker opponents most of the time tend to lack the intestinal fortitude for any real pain. In games or in real life.
Now, back to my the splinters I inserted earlier under my fingernails
Seriously...don't like the grief? Don't play the game. Or join a herd, you might make it to safety so long as you're not the last one behind
I love these people, you entertain me all day long with this "I'll rip your head off and piss down the hole" kind of talk. It should be mandatory to have webcams on these games, being able to see the actual physical presence of the sociopathic psychos who exercise such effortless supremacy over the "carebears" in these games we play would be even more fun.
Hello all! Recently me and a group of friends started working on a community website for typical PvP/PK/Griefer assholes and gentlemen. The goal of the website is provide a neutral community for the PvP gurus, griefing assholes, and clan organizations representing such people. We won't be focusing on any particular game, we want this place to become a piss and bragging fest for all PvPers across all games. Along with the forums, we'll cover and review all major MMO PvP game titles through our main website and personal blogs. Currently we are looking for a number of staff volunteers to help us get this project on the feet. To make it all simple and neat, the forums will be using SMF forums and the core site will be managed through Joomla CMS. We find both systems simple, clean and easy to customize and mod. If you'd like to join the team, PM me, and let me know what you can contribute. We need people with abilities to skin the Joomla/SMF parts, customize the website and proficiently write articles. The only thing we require is that you clearly have a PvP/PK history, and are not afraid of very minimally moderated community. Seeing how this game turns out, we could add some specific Darkfall related forums and let it become a perfect alternative to the moderated Official Clan forums.
If you are interested, PM me here or register and contact me at the forums.

I just visited your site and it looks like it got ganked! LOL FAIL!
Here's a thought, did you ever wonder why no one ever tried to set a site up like this before a sort of international griefer's site?
here's a clue in the form of an old saying, "Don't put all your eggs in one basket!"
If your site is successful, I can see some very pissed off carebears, low level groups, minor clans, ( that has anyone who knows how to hack! ) coming after the little sad groupie griefers and your site for revenge and thanks' to you, BelphegorMad, there going to find them and the rest of your member' really easy like at www.TheGriefer.net I wonder how long it will take for one these Argo carebears, to hack in and get all the email addresses or ip addresses of all your members listed and again this is thanks to you, then the fun will really start, because you lot like to make sure that the person/s getting ganked are also hurting in real life, what's the bet these hurting people are going to return unto you ten fold the hurt you and your member's enjoyed so much on them.
Anyway, just a thought and you would be right to say it would never happen, but then again.....
Good luck with this idea!
footnote; I'm not a carebear, but I am a soloist and no I'm in no way a programmer nor a hacker in any sense or skill.

i'm looking forward to seeing you morons getting your shit smashed in in DF and whining about it, because DF isn't a "stats/gear" based game and actually requires some semblence of actual gaming skills.

What actual gaming skills? Knowing what macros and cheats to use?
Let me just tell you that if you weep tears when someone pks you while you solo grind resources, then STAY THE HELL AWAY from Darkfall. Just a word of advice before your virtual life is shattered into pieces and you'll start ordering razor blades.
But what happens when you drive out the very people you take such joy in killing? You're warning 'carebears' away from the game, but it's those very players that you take such joy in griefing. What happens when they've finally had enough and ragequit? Do you all move on like locusts to the next PvP game and purge it of its infestation of weeping pixel-loving kiddies, or stay and fester with the rest of the griefers, revelling in the spoils of war?

Serious question.
Simple question, really. Just like not everyone enjoys to randomly kill as many people as he or she possibly can, not everyone quits a game over being serial ganked now and then. The so called 'griefers' and 'carebears' only represent the two extremes of pvp mmo players.
There are quite some people who don't care about being 'griefed' in pvp occasionaly, shrug it off and go on with there game in another area for a while or get some people together and lay down some serious vengeance on the griefers or even try to do so alone. The beautiful thing is, this game allows pretty much all scenario's. It allows assholes to be assholes and victims to have their heroic revenge and feel real good about it
Oh, and, everyone needs an ingame enemy. Makes that revenge feel all the more sweet.
Haha, this thread is great. So quickly got filled with trigger-happy defensive and pixle loving carebear cry babies. Yes, griefing idiots can be fun. Why? Because what's unhealthy is not the griefting but the complete emotional attachement the carebears have to their pixles, items and online avatars. Through their unhealthy addiction, they misery in game reflects on their personal lifes. Don't blame us on your issues! Anyways, recieved a few messages and I'll get back to them as soon as I'm off work tonight. Thanks!
You know , I usually don't reply to numb nuts that post trash like this, but for some reason your post just pisses me off. You dare make a comment about personal lives while hiding behind a computer and trying to talk trash.
I dare say many carebears just don't feel like wasting their time fooling around with little turds that have nothing better to do than to try and ruin game time for others. Not as so many seem to think, that non pvpers are scared or lack skills, I dare say that if it was something that said carebear wanted to do , you'd get an ass whipping.
Some carebears, perhaps, have been at pvp for a very long time, perhaps it takes an actual challenge in a game before it is deemed worth it.
WOW! The carebears are quick to cry and blame. You dont want to be pvp'd, dont roll on a pvp server or play a game that encourages it.
PvP isn't the same thing as PK / Griefers...seriously get some facts straight. PKing / Griefing are completely different from PvP interactions. PvP covers a wide stream of activities that pit players against each other....PKing is just for the sheer entertainment of Killing Other Players no challenge needed just kill anyone regardless rules and etiquete. Griefing is any form of breaking the rules in order to cause players distress, ruin the experience or angering a person. Griefing is also a bannable offense in just about every game.
The lowest of the lowest scum in the MMO community are PKer's that enjoy Griefing..it has nothing to do with being carebear real PvPers tend to dispise PK/Griefers as much as everyone else since they'll use every illegal offensive tactic possible to achieve "epeen".
Let me loosely quote to you what a Blizz Blue poster said about griefing, "...there is no griefing on a pvp server. You choose to accpet the conseques by selecting a pvp server."
If you cant handle being pvp'd, griefed, camped, then you are turd and deserve to be flushed. Leave the server and roll on a carebear server. You sir are the scum that turns chat channels into cry fests about how somebody is pvping you and you suck to much to stop it.
Real pvper's? Is there some sort of Geneva Convention for pvp now? Guess I'm a terrorist.
Roses are red Violets are blue The reviewer has a mishapen head Which means his opinion is skewed ...Aldous.MF'n.Huxley
I'm not really much of a PvP'er anymore, age and RL have made me slow ingame so i mostly play to socialize, kill some stuff that doesn't require quick reflexes and relax after a hectic day at the office. So here's my take on the PK/Grief debacle.
PKing is part of a PvP server. It's a Player versus Player encounter in the sense that both the PK and the would be victim are player characters. It's not relevant that the victim wants to fight or not. He or she consented to unannounced PvP by starting out on a PvP server after all. Having been PKed on crafter or tamer AND having PKed people on my red back in UO has shown me this. Others might see this differently of course, to each their own.
I don't understand why Griefing and PKing are considered the same. Griefing is kind of a form of harassment. You can "grief" a roleplay event by spamming swearing words in caps non-stop. You can "grief" a PvE world boss encounter by training loads of additional spawn through the area. Heck, back in UO you could "grief" a vendor mall by placing objects in the recall (teleport) arrival spot so people could not visit.
So in short (and in my personal view): Not all PKs are griefers. Not all Griefing is done by PKs.
Oh and: Some people should really go out and sniff the fresh air more. They seem to be getting way too upset on a forum.
I'd be very interested to take a look at this new community for PK'ers and Griefers.
I considered myself a carebear but I rolled a toon on Dragonmaw in WoW along with my guild because we have historically played evil, not RP but just who the game depicts as being the over-all bad-guys, so in SWG we where the Imps, in EQ2 we started in Freeport.
Now ofc I've met many many griefers in the games I've played, been killed too many times to mention but likewise I've killed them back just as many times and enjoyed it when I've corpse camped them, with a few guildees taking shifts when I would get bored or just disrupting their own attempts at trying to grief others (Played druid, stealth FTW) by patrolling around the supposed griefer and ensuring a few timely heals on the noobs and then killing the griefer multiple times and then some more.
So from my point of view these so-called griefers didn't actually bother me, gave me plenty of reason to vent my daily frustrations from the real world onto a moving target that had slightly better AI than the NPC's, not much going uptop though as they just followed the exact same routine and become too predictable, hunting in the same areas, looking for the same targets, following the same macro attacks and knowing that when you killed them they would always always come back for more .
Now as I said I consider myself a carebear but I'l still be taking a look at this new forum just to see if it turns into a mess after a couple of weeks, or if it dies a death, but it will still be interesting to see the inner workings of your average griefer.
Of course all the whining carebears have flocked to protest their outrage at how people enjoy being the bully.
etc etc
"all the whining carebears" = two people posting about newbie griefing? I'd hardly call two people a flock
Some can't resist. Calling someone else "carebear" makes them feel more "hardcore".
That said.. I can honestly say, after some of the posts in this thread, I have officially deemed DF's community as Shadowbane 2.0. It's been getting closer and closer over time, but the last few posts of absurdly over-zealous posturing BS I saw from a few self-declared "hardcore" type have sealed it.
Difference is... where I didn't get to see the people in Shadowbane shooting themselves in the feet as it happened - only saw the aftermath of it - I will at least get to see the DF players doing so. Kinda like a "second chance".
- prepares the popcorn -

heh been a long time since I saw anyone mention Shadowbane, funny thing is I used to read their forums which quite frankly do mirror the threads we see now about Darkfall, scary isn't it, btw is Shadowbane the supposed MMO killer of all MMO's out at that time still up and running with the millions apon millions of subs the community said would be playing??
It amuses me greatly that these self-proclaimed griefers don't realise that they're not just biting, but wilfully chewing the hand that feeds them (being the game they want so desperately to play).
Ever stopped to think why FFA, full loot sandbox games are so rare? Because bottom-feeding morons suck the fun out for everyone else and then wonder why people stop playing and the game fails.
At this point somebody will try and justify their behaviour by claiming that griefing strengthens the game's community by creating a common enemy. This just isn't true. In a PvP environment you have enough opposition in the form of other races/guilds to foster a commonality without the need for a random numpty coming along and acting like an idiot.
second life has a dedicated griefer playing base. that 'game' is a sandbox so everything from crashing the grid to spamming with porn is possible and can be quite a challange as the devs try to out wit the griefers. i'd make contacts with that crowd.
Because every game that fails reduces the chance that anything new or interesting coming out because only the big money factories like Blizzard, EA and SOE will risk putting money into it.
I'd like to play something that isn't WoW or WAR but if people are given free reign to kill a game in this way, thats all that will be left. No more FFA PvP, no more sandbox paradigm...just endless PvE raids.
Darkfall has enough trouble in front of it just getting people to take its release seriously without being labelled by the gaming community as a cesspool of corpse-campers and grief-monkeys.

Good point.
We all have to realize that a great deal of these posters are children. WOW has brought the kids into MMO's and they have brought their childish, immature behavior along with them. Problem is, we tend to forget this while we are trying to make valid points in a forum setting.
We have all seen their behavior in online games we play, so there is no denying it. Sexual nonsense in towns, racism, griefing, cheating, hacking.... This is the real problem with today's MMO's.
You could have fantastic ffa/pvp games BUT... Not with the morons of today, I'm afraid. They will find a way to ruin any game before it even has a chance to become something special.

So stfu about other's lives
Did I touch a nerve? Maybe the truth is hurting? Sorry to upset you so much over the internet! Internet and gaming is all serious business, right?
Just an update, everything is coming great so far and we have big plans for the community. We are considering including a very indepth ladder and tournament software for use by the community as well as unlimited Vent server.

That would be priceless!
Good luck with this idea!
footnote; I'm not a carebear, but I am a soloist and no I'm in no way a programmer nor a hacker in any sense or skill.

awwwwww..look at the so-called "hardcore" kiddies beating their chests on the message board about how "hardcore" they are. how cute.
i'm looking forward to seeing you morons getting your shit smashed in in DF and whining about it, because DF isn't a "stats/gear" based game and actually requires some semblence of actual gaming skills.
good luck.
Agreed.
Getting tired of all the "hardcore" children mouthing off on the Internet. Enough is enough already.

What actual gaming skills? Knowing what macros and cheats to use?

My brand new bloggity blog.
So stfu about other's lives

Destined for failure. Sorry, but griefers are not community oriented, outside of target selection that is...
Lost my mind, now trying to lose yours...
Kinda like a "second chance".

heh been a long time since I saw anyone mention Shadowbane, funny thing is I used to read their forums which quite frankly do mirror the threads we see now about Darkfall, scary isn't it, btw is Shadowbane the supposed MMO killer of all MMO's out at that time still up and running with the millions apon millions of subs the community said would be playing??
Feel free to have Shadowbane flashbacks.
second life has a dedicated griefer playing base. that 'game' is a sandbox so everything from crashing the grid to spamming with porn is possible and can be quite a challange as the devs try to out wit the griefers. i'd make contacts with that crowd.

Will keep you updated as things progress!
