The lack of solo content has kiiled off many a big budget MMO. EQ2 and DDO are prime examples. Large portions of solo content were included after release because of massive subscription losses. If it wasn't for WOW game design would still revolve around this outdated forced grouping model. Those days are gone because its not where the "market" is. If you think any large game studio is going to invest tens of millions to make an oldstyle forced grouping only MMO you are dreaming. But hey dream all you like. Game design is a business, not a charity for lonely teenagers who want company.
I"m not in any way interested in forcing anyone to group with me. I'm not in any way interested in forcing anyone to socialize with me.
sure sounds like you are. Because the game you are describing would have FORCED grouping. And any game that had 100% forced grouping would die very quickly or would barely survive with little support. (unless it was an SOE game )
Think about it a bit more. You don't like "forced grouping" right? So you wouldn't play this game right? So nobody would be "forcing" you to group. YOu'd play something else.
The people playing this game would want to do so, and enjoy the game mechanics. You can't "force" the willing.
I've never been "forced" to group in any MMORPG, because that's the only way I like to play the game.
Now, if I hold a gun to your head, and make you play this game, then yes, you'd be forced to group. Otherwise it's like saying when you play frisbee it's a forced grouping game.
No one forces you to throw a frisbee to antoher person, but you can't do it by yourself.
the game is forcing people to group if you cant do anything solo without dieing. This has nothing to do with putting a gun to somebody's head. If you want to play this game you would be forced to group. There is no other choice in the matter of playing this game. And that is why it would fail, there is only 1 choice and that is to group, and players like choice and freedom, moreso in MMORPGs. If all you want to do is group, then play those games you listed earlier in the thread. Even though they were bad examples.
if you cant understand the concept of forced grouping, then maybe you should read a little more about mmorpgs and their features.

I find the majority of the responses entertaining. I would like to know how many of you played an MMO before WoW? Some MMO's had solo content to a certain extent. You could solo one mob period. More then one would kill you more then likely. Class had little to do with it as they balanced most of the game off of PVE, PvP was for FPS and should stay that way or make games like Darkfall for those who wish it. Honestly though I miss the forced grouping. I am lvling my 3rd toon in WoW atm and honestly I dont need anyone to acomplish anything. Kinda of lame if you ask me. If you want to knwo why I am doing it, it is to play with some friends at 80 already raiding. The server comunity was tight, you exciled those people who were ass bags because you could not hide behind Solo content to acomplish anything. If you fucked guilds over no one wanted you even if you were epicly geared. A game that was group centric is probably what the market needs now. The majority of the players who started on WoW have now moved to a slightly more difficulty level. Me I want hard core, but that is just me I guess.

Well, you call Chess forced grouping too, because you can't play it by yourself, but nobody that plays Chess considers themselves "forced to group". It's simply a game that requires more than one person to play, which is the same thing I'm talking about.
I'm not upset if you don't want to play this game. I hope they make lots and lots of MMORPGs for you where you can play the entire game solo. That's fine with me.
Why are you so upset that I want to play something else?

I started with Kingdom of Drakka, a precursor to modern MMO. Then I played UO beta .. hated it .. too much skill/mining grinding and ganging. Then I played EQ for a long while.
So I am a MMO veteran. Solo content is a GOD SEND. WOW has it right. It is painful in EQ when you cannot find a group. WOW has the right balance. Enough solo things you can do while some big rewards are for grouping (dungeon & raids).
WOW is a much better GAME than EQ & UO, in its game mechanics as well as design.
rather then read every single post dispite asuming they are all worth while reads. the thought of a group only game thought interesting in a gaming/gamer perspective would also be hard as well to create.
my self im mixed. i like solo/group play styles some times i like grouping others i would rather go solo... i mean its not that i hate working with others, as anyone whos been MMOing for awhile knows parties = fast leveling. but at the same time... who hasnt had that one group where you have a bunch of useless A-holes who dont do squat and take all the prime drops.
say for example your party as a retard who doesnt heal/tank/dps or anything just leaches.. and the most powerful item drops he runs in and loots it. so all the others who actually did work get the useless crafting or gold drops... which equal 5% of the total value of the godly item that just dropped... that part just annoys me to no end i would quit the party and leave for awhile play a few FPS/RTS then go back...
solo i can get all the drops.. which is important in a crafting game cause it means i dont have to share that drop of leather or cast iron or granit ect... so if i want to create plate armor or the famed dragon tooth sword of the hobo i can without asking little jimmy to give me the drops he got too..
that is also partly why most mmos are both solo/group. solo for crafting/farming. and group for xp and boss killing.
though i wouldnt mind trying an all party game... i cant see it being too fun if your party is full of morons
They have Circa 1990 graphics. I'd rather play something Circa 2009.

chess is more of a 1v1 solo pvp. since you are going against the other player and not grouping with them. And chess has nothing to do with MMORPGs. You are comparing BOARD GAMES with MMORPGs... I dont pay monthly to play chess. You are mistaking people who enjoy soloing every now and again, with people who play single-player none massive games.
EDIT: also its alot easier to find one person to play chess with, while its alot harder to find a group of 8 people who need to be certain classes or have certain skills to fill in gaps of the group.
did i say i was upset? What did i say that made you think i was?
This just seems like a stupid idea, i mean why make a game 100% grouping? Do you dislike people who solo? Do you dislike the fact that people perfer to play the game differently then you? You sound more upset about the fact that people like to solo then i do about a game that doesnt offer choice.

You're in the minority if you don't like WoW. So?
If you changed Chess so it was a solo game like Solitaire it wouldn't be Chess anymore. You might like it, but I enjoying playing Chess. It requires more than one person to play. What's wrong with that?
How does it affect you if I'm playing a game that doesn't allow solo play? You wouldn't play it. You'd be playing a solo friendly game. I don't mind if you don't want to play this game and you want to play a solo friendly game. Go right ahead. Doesn't bother me a bit.
Also, you can indeed play chess solo. Like said, options.

So you want a social game that excludes people? Sounds counter productive but hey whatever floats your boat. Just don't fool yourself into thinking you are gaining things by losing them.
So you want a social game that excludes people? Sounds counter productive but hey whatever floats your boat. Just don't fool yourself into thinking you are gaining things by losing them.
All games exclude people. FPS games exclude those that dont' like twitch skill games. WoW excludes people that dont' like cartoony graphics. LOTRO excludes people that like Sci Fi instead of fantasy. The list is endless. There is no such thing as a game for everyone.
This just seems like a stupid idea, i mean why make a game 100% grouping? Do you dislike people who solo? Do you dislike the fact that people perfer to play the game differently then you? You sound more upset about the fact that people like to solo then i do about a game that doesnt offer choice.
The game I'm describing doesn't have anything to do with people that want to solo. They don't bother me in the least. They can play any solo friendly game they want to.
I want a game where I can't solo. It's not about you at all.
In this case you can't offer choice. I am saying I would find it fun if I could play a game that did not allow me to solo. If you ad a solo feature to the game it ruins the game for me. I'm talking about what I like, notthing to do with wanting you to group, nothing to do with wanting you to play this game.
You ad a solo feature to this game, and now you've ruined the game for me. There's no way to make us both happy, so why should we try?
Your "choice" takes the fun out of the game for me. I don't want to take choice from you, I just don't want you to take the fun otu fo the game for me. But I don't see how to do this in one game. Do you?
It's like you said, let's play basketball with an adjustable basket. Just adjust the basket to the height that makes the game right for you. Well you just ruined the game for me. I don't want to adjust the basket, I want it at a fixed height that I can't adjust. Now if you insist on making it adjustable so everyone could have a choice, I'll make it 3 feet high, toss the ball in one time, and quit because it's no fun anymore.

And you said, you know, not everyone is good at aiming with a mouse and key board. Let's make the First Person shooter a game with more choices, and give people the choice to use auto aim.

i dont see why both grouping and soloing content can exist. It does fine now. Asking for a 100% grouping or soloing game, implies that people who group or solo ruin the game for other people. Even in the FPSs you mention there is a solo option and a grouping/multiplayer option. This whole discussion is ridiculous.

I have some sympathy with your wish for a group based game Ihmotepp because the MMOs I have tried that are designed around the ability to solo a lot, tend to be painfully shallow. Which isn't a surprise if you design for the lowest common denominator across character builds you are going to end up with something bland.
If you design for multiple people with multiple skills you can build something with a tadge of depth. So yes for me grouping centric games are great, as long as they make the group focus have a point.
Again I don't subscribe to the it has to suit everybody, games that try to suit everybody, probably don't suit anyone particulary well. It being niche doesn't bother me at all as I don't have generic tastes, and I certainly don't need a game to have common popularity to validate my decision to play it.
However even I shy away from being forced to do one style of play. I would gravitate towards a group based game (to me it is proper socialising, which is sort of the core of an MMO) but I would still need more than that.
What do you do when your gaming base has outleveled starting areas?
How do you get new or rerolled toons to group when there just might not be enough players in the area to form a group? What if your gamer plays in a time zone or at low peak times?
The closest you can get to this, currently, is FFXI. Although you can still solo some, it's extremely tedius for most classes, and downright impossible for others.
I love it when threads are won on the first reply...

your examples are the worst i've ever seen. Auto aim isn't aloud in most FPSs, and if you dont like aiming with a mouse and keyboard you use a controller. If you dont like to raid you pvp, you dont pay money because that isnt a choice/option in WoW.
i dont see why both grouping and soloing content can exist. It does fine now. Asking for a 100% grouping or soloing game, implies that people who group or solo ruin the game for other people. Even in the FPSs you mention there is a solo option and a grouping/multiplayer option. This whole discussion is ridiculous.
I would like a game where I cannot solo. Tell me how you will make that game for me, and allow people to solo in it?
play any MMO on the market, and dont do ANYTHING without a group. Easy as that, if you choose to solo because its something easy, then thats your choice. If you want to group, then group. Who is holding you back?
I think what Ihmotepp is getting at is if people can do anything in the game solo (That includes mere traveling) it would ruin his fun. Now he did say that he would allow people to craft solo, but how would one get the materials to do so if you can't even walk around by yourself?
I think such a game would only pander to the smallest of minorities around here, which doesn't include me by the way, but if some company is willing to make a game like that, then all power to them.
I just don't see a game that locks you into groups 24/7 holding that much appeal.

sure sounds like you are.

Play games Circa 1990.

They have Circa 1990 graphics. I'd rather play something Circa 2009.
rather then read every single post dispite asuming they are all worth while reads. the thought of a group only game thought interesting in a gaming/gamer perspective would also be hard as well to create.
my self im mixed. i like solo/group play styles some times i like grouping others i would rather go solo... i mean its not that i hate working with others, as anyone whos been MMOing for awhile knows parties = fast leveling. but at the same time... who hasnt had that one group where you have a bunch of useless A-holes who dont do squat and take all the prime drops.
say for example your party as a retard who doesnt heal/tank/dps or anything just leaches.. and the most powerful item drops he runs in and loots it. so all the others who actually did work get the useless crafting or gold drops... which equal 5% of the total value of the godly item that just dropped... that part just annoys me to no end i would quit the party and leave for awhile play a few FPS/RTS then go back...
solo i can get all the drops.. which is important in a crafting game cause it means i dont have to share that drop of leather or cast iron or granit ect... so if i want to create plate armor or the famed dragon tooth sword of the hobo i can without asking little jimmy to give me the drops he got too..
that is also partly why most mmos are both solo/group. solo for crafting/farming. and group for xp and boss killing.
though i wouldnt mind trying an all party game... i cant see it being too fun if your party is full of morons

chess is more of a 1v1 solo pvp. since you are going against the other player and not grouping with them.

You're in the minority if you don't like WoW. So?
Yes, becouse this is what i said.
Also, you can indeed play chess solo. Like said, options.

So you want a social game that excludes people? Sounds counter productive but hey whatever floats your boat. Just don't fool yourself into thinking you are gaining things by losing them.
All games exclude people. FPS games exclude those that dont' like twitch skill games. WoW excludes people that dont' like cartoony graphics. LOTRO excludes people that like Sci Fi instead of fantasy. The list is endless. There is no such thing as a game for everyone.

That way even people without good aim could play the game, and it would be a much better game, because there would be more choice!

Then too bad. That is not what most people want and few developers will cater for it.
What do you do when your gaming base has outleveled starting areas?
How do you get new or rerolled toons to group when there just might not be enough players in the area to form a group? What if your gamer plays in a time zone or at low peak times?
Do you offer NPC Henchmen like in Guildwars?
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
