no it isn't. Value is based on industry standards and Darkfall is as far away from commercial industry standard for a pay to play MMO at $15 a month as you can possibly get.

That's what Blizzard charges for their games for christs sake. And Darkfall aint no World of Warcraft production quality...

Im not going to spend 30 minutes giving you a economics lesson on utility and market value, but they are two different things. What I think its worth, what you think its worth, and what the market thinks its worth are three completely different things.

For some darkfall will be the sequel to a game many have been waiting for since UO.

For others, darkfall is going to be an ugly piece of crap thats all gankers and assholes.

I agree with you, the MARKET value for Darkfall will be lower than say WoW, and WoW players will hardly value the game at all.

Eve players, Sandbox players, and oldschool UO'ers / Ac'ers will find this game to be a refreshing change of pace.

In Economics you can charge what the market will bare, and the demographic that DF is aiming for will definitely pay this price.

Real Estate pricing says different.. The value is determined by the resale value of the property surrounding whatever is for sale.  If you live in s crappy neighborhood, where the median value of a house is say.. 78,000, you can't sell a house in that neighborhood for one million.  This is the case of Darkfall.  It's not located in the beleverly hills of MMORPG, it's in south compton, where other Niche games live.   You can't charge one million dollors there, or NO ONE WILL BUY.   In this case, they are over charging for their product due to demand and supply, This is simply artificial, they do NOT need to limit the supply.  It's escargo syndrom.  You limit the amount of something someone can have, and you charge an outragous amount, it's artificial inflation.  Happened with Gas this last year.

Were not talking about Real Estate. Were talking about MMOs.

But if you want to think about mmos like that then fine.

Bad neigborhoods are good for crackheads. FFA PVP Crackies gotta get there fix and living near the crack house is good for the addiction.

FYI Other niche games like EVE charge the same prices.

This whole topic is such a non issue for anyone that wants the game.

For anyone that doesnt want the game, you all must get off on complaining.

Simply put there running out of things to complain about. Vaporware to Aventurine lied to Graphics to w/e. Each time they get proven wrong they search for something else. It really is never ending. Check through some of there post histories. You can check for yourself lol.

Yea it really is a joke to see these people come back to this forum over and over and completely forget how they were wrong and just move on to the next thing they are sure about and makes DF lol...only to be proven wrong again.

Hey they keep the DF name on the front page, and promote the game.  People who havent heard about it say hey whats that?  wow this guy really hates it, maybe ill check it out to see wtf it is.....um actually this game is really good...im in!

I'll be honest. I don't get the obsession with $15/month subscription fees. I really think there would be a market for an MMORPG that wouldn't warrant $15/month, but would find a solid audience at $9.99. I guess with server and bandwidth costs being fixed, there are some limits to how low they can go and still turn a worthwhile profit, but I think a lower cost offering would also benefit from the lowering of often unrealistic expectations.

The initial price also seems a little steep for a digital only purchase. Kudos to them for going the digital only route (I was shocked to find that most MMORPGs only earn the develpers 20% of the box price), but it seems they could lower the cost and still make more profit per sale than they would have by pushing boxes through a publisher.

In the end though, it's not any more expensive than most MMORPGs and for the people who actually find it worth playing on a continuing basis won't have any reason to complain.

That doest really work here though...

The sales price on darkfall is the industry standard. There is no "Median" price for an indy mmo, as this is the first real mainstream one we are getting. Are they taking a gamble by going for 50.00 price point? Maybe...

But demand atm is high, so they can charge what they like.

They arent limiting supply so they can charge more, they are limiting supply as they cant afford to get enough servers to meet demand. Thus, Qty supplied is < than Qty Demanded which in a free market would lead to higher and higher prices, till qty demand dropped to = qty supplied.

However we arent dealing with a market economy on this... not really. Im sure eventually just like every other MMO they will drop their price and focus on the real money subs... but the high price point initially just like other mmo's is to make up for dev costs, and as an indy developer this is a must.

So, as I stated earlier, you can charge what the market will bare. For DF atm it will take that price, in your example, the market wouldnt take the price. There would simply be no demand for an over priced house. For DF there is more demand than they can meet, even with the high price.

They must be smoking some real good shit if they think they can charge $15 a month for this. That's bordering on insulting...
Insulting to real commercial grade MMO's charging those type of fees. This game is no where even REMOTELY near being able to charge $15 a month...

I've been paying 15 dollars a month for MMOs since 1999. Why should this MMO be any different? Its already far more stable and polished, with more features, and more unique than any MMO I've seen come out in the past 4-5 years. (save for maybe Eve) This is the first MMO worth a damn in a while and they did a great job.

Their servers hold around 30 thousand users, there's no loading, no instances, no zones, no zone lines, AND its twitch based combat. Those servers are far more advanced than most MMOs that can just toss together servers because they use easy cop out methods of zoning and instancing.

And you want them to charge LESS after all that hard work? You trolls make me sick.

If you don't think the game is worth the 15$, THEN DON'T BUY IT.

As a beta tester, I must say I cannot wait for the 25th, and I'm not buying it. I'm just eager to watch this game get bashed harder than Vanguard did in it's first month.

I logged in a few days ago and I've seen better alpha's than this games current state. Vanguard and AOC both looked like polished games compared to this.

I love seeing fanbois in every failed mmo telling ppl to leave and how they dont care.In the end, they get what they wished for. Low subscribers and dead servers. Get real, you think millions are dying to play darkfall?  Ppl will leave like what you said and the game will die. You can play this shit alone yrself. LOLLOLOL

the question is: IS THIS GAME REALLY A SUCKY LOW QUALITY GAME?

    the answer:

IN MY OPINION, IT WILL BE FUN. im no troll nor a fanboi. i just played beta, i think it is a decent game. if this game sucks so much, why are there like 50 new forum threads every second on darkfall in mmorpg com?

THE TRUE THING IS THAT... THIS GAME IS WORTH TRYING OUT... 15 DOLLIES A MONTH IS COOL... IM COOL WITH THAT. but theres another thing:

LOTRO IS A MUCH BETTER GAME AND IT HAS LIKE... 10 DOLLIES A MONTH.. LOTRO PWNS THIS... LOTRO IS THE BEST GAME EVER AND LORD OF THE RINGS IS THE BEST EPIC STORY EVER TOLD BYE BYE  HAVE A NICE DAY, BOIZZZZZ GALZZ

Actually, WoW charges 26EUR for 2 months, or 13 EUR per month.

The only difference is that DF looks a bit less but is far better in terms of gameplay and pvp. Instead of whiners taking over and all world pvp going extinct, the dev's are actually stimulating pk/pvp/wars.

If you want pretty colors and xxlegolasxx type of gameplay, go back to WoW. If you want to be on guard 24/7, having to defend your town/attack others and constantly be at risk of losing everything you are carrying, then you move to darkfall.

What however is insulting is that games like wow, with how much money they charge, cant even do something simple like balancing.

Price is too steep for the risk and return.

"Do you feel lucky? Well, do ya punk? Go ahead, make my day!"

Glad others will gamble on this game.

I hope it exceeds SB so in a couple months I can try it out for free.

I'd easily pay 2 bucks a day, that is still cheaper than morning coffee break, 50Bucks is cheaper than a night out. I am paying 400 a month on a car that sits in a garage 7 months out of the year...

I think they are doing the right thing, who wants a game disc that is gonna be a coaster of old info in a few months anyways.

  • DarthRaidenDarthRaiden Member UncommonPosts: 4,333

See rthe price is an offer and demand thing..Obviously a lot more people are interested into bying DarkFall then the developres had in mind and planned and that puts them into a position to go for that prize they now announced and you in that position to cry me a river but to not can change a bit aboutz...
