Were any of you around for the amazingly aweful launch of SWG? On launch day there was so many people trying to access the account creation page that it was down for the entire day, with only a few people getting in at a time. I remember I had to have a friend of mine come over and help me out with a bunch of crazy computer tricks just to get on the page.
Then once I finally created my account you know what happened? I could not create a character for hours, I tried and tried but the game would lag out seconds after hitting the "NexT" button. It took me and my friend until around 4-5 in the morning to finally get on and into a starting area (Naboo Theed of course).
Then I was lagged out every 5 minutes or so for the rest of the night or until I could reach a place where there was not 150 people gathered around in one spot.
This was SOE guys, this was there huge new MMO which they put millions of dollars into and it happened to them. I am not saying Darkfall will be the next big thing, I am not even saying I will love it like I did SWG (And UO ) but I know that the company deserves a little slack when it comes to a launch date for a MMO. You should at least give them a day or so after launch to get their act together if after that the problems continue then please "Rant ON!"
This thread stinks of excuse making. I hope the game releases well, but let it stand or fall on Tasos claims.
You also forgot to mention one little thing... SWG did not have a limited release at start.... If DF fall flat with a limited release there are no excuses to be made. Again I hope it is a smooth release, but this thread is just silly.
I think this whole forum stinks of people bullying around a little company and then complaining when they do not have a sandbox game to play because UO is screwed up now, and SWG has a completely different face.
I think this whole forums smells of hypocrites who would rather take the cheap shots at people trying to do something different then make a case agains the thousand of free to play games out there that do the exact same thing everytime.
You know what you right, some companys like the free to play ones, say what is going to be in their game and deliver you know why? Nothing is different its all the same thing cut and pasted into a new skin. One game comes along and says how its going to be different and with confidence and everyone starts taking spears to its chest.
So I do not think this thread is silly I think it is a valid point that a company with such limited resources should be allowed the benefit of the doubt to get their act together, I am not saying forget everything they have done I am saying they deserve a chance to acomplish what they are shooting for.
It really is sad too because it is not like this for other games, with Mount and Blade they claimed they would be in store shelves on release and guess what I saw one copy a month later in my local store. No one there complained, you know why? All companies have their own way of doing things, just because AV is different does not mean they are trying to rip you off.
And I think this forum is full of people who can no longer seperate reality from fiction. Darkfall will launch and it will hold its own, no doubts about it. But why should Aventurine be granted something other companies don't get?? Why?
Will you grant BioWare the same slack? After all, they are new to MMO development, too. Would you grant Blizzard the same slack? They were new when WoW launched, at least to MMO's, too.
If you enter a market, you're supposed to do your research. And being -surprised- by more than 10k people wanting to play is BS talk at its best. Unable to manage more than 10k is mismanaging your project.
That's not to say I don't wish them the best of luck with what they attempt, but to call their mistakes anything BUT mistakes is silly. Talk about the fanbois on this forum who claim everything that is happening is a smart move on Aventurine's part. No...it's desperation moves if anything and it should be called for what it is, not simply glorified into something it is not.
People need to call things by their names. DF promised a lot. Too much. They fell on their face with a bit of it. What#s left of the project must now make a good impression. And starting off with a limited release is NOT making a good impression. If the game holds solid, then maybe they can recover from this. But it doesn#t change that it was badly managed. Period.
exactly....the same people who are loving DF now, better not be the same people insulting other companies which are trying to produce their first mmo.
This includes many different games, earthrise, FE, MO,TOR, etc......
Alternatively wait till the professional reviews come in, worst comes to worse you miss the first month, big deal.
The problem is I like the games who are in general hated by a lot more. I am a fan for ninch game, like Face of Mankind. Now I will be extreamly carefully with DF and will try before I buy, unless the review suddenly become that good. I burned my fingers once (D&L, granted I had more money to waste back then :P) and not planning on doing so again.
Also you are in need of a AAA company to launch an MMO right. To the least you should get a consult form more profesional poeple regarding publishing. It is not disgrace to ask for help and assistence especialy if it help your costumers.
I do however hate the fact that Darkfall is releasing the game to small amounts of poeple. I believe it is ridiculous was to release your game as this is what a beta is for, I prefered they spend more time in beta getting the server set up right then how there doing it now. I atleast hope they have properly stess tested the server(s) they will open so that the poeple who get in actualy have a smooth release and are not there to stress test the game.

Your right, you dont, however you better have one to make up for all the smack talk you have been dishing out over the 7 years the game has been in devlopment.
HAH, poor little Funcom guy lol.
I could not stop laughing .. Funcom guy is so sad LOL

How on earth can anyone on these boards bully AV? Seriously man listen to yourself. This is an open forum for debate about MMOs. That means taking the hits along with the kudos. Some people on here would love to sensor that and instead have a happy little tea party praying to the all mighty DF god Tasos. For so many "hardcore" PvPers I have never seen so much whining about AV being picked on.
I think this whole forums smells of hypocrites who would rather take the cheap shots at people trying to do something different then make a case agains the thousand of free to play games out there that do the exact same thing everytime.
No, these boards are filled with frustrated gamers who have been mishandled and out right lied to by the spokesman for DF. There are several other MMOs out there that do not have this kind of caustic reaction from every side. Tasos and by extention AV have cultivated this community... so there is no one to blame but themselves.
You know what you right, some companys like the free to play ones, say what is going to be in their game and deliver you know why? Nothing is different its all the same thing cut and pasted into a new skin. One game comes along and says how its going to be different and with confidence and everyone starts taking spears to its chest.
I could care less... What I want is to be treated like an adult. If they are going to miss some features I don't care... just tell the community. This childish secrecy and arrogance is what causes such venom in the community... again they only have themselves to blame for it.
So I do not think this thread is silly I think it is a valid point that a company with such limited resources should be allowed the benefit of the doubt to get their act together, I am not saying forget everything they have done I am saying they deserve a chance to acomplish what they are shooting for.
I would completely agree with you IF Tasos had not been a complete ass. He has spun lie after lie for YEARS now or at best you could say he was misleading and completely exhagerated the game for hype. I would give this game the benifit of the doubt if they left any doubt to give... by their own statements they have made claims of such rediculous grandure that they now have to take the beating when they come up obviously short.
It really is sad too because it is not like this for other games, with Mount and Blade they claimed they would be in store shelves on release and guess what I saw one copy a month later in my local store. No one there complained, you know why? All companies have their own way of doing things, just because AV is different does not mean they are trying to rip you off.
I have no issues with AV doing things differently... I have a problem with arrogance... especially misplaced arrogance. AV can have a limited release... a buggy game... all that and more, I would accept it and either play or move on peacefully if Tasos had not promised everything under the moon while saying how worthless the critics were.

So...let me get this straight. Aventurine can't handle more than 10k people on launch day (or 20k whatever be the number) and have to restrict access to people who pre-order, in essence, doing what they never "wanted" to do.
This happens because supposedly there is SO much more interest in the game than they have anticipated....EXCUSE ME????? 20k players is more than they anticipated???
That excuse was hard to buy when they ranted on about the 300k being a surprise to them, but now more than 10k is a surprise and they can't handle it?
That's what a successful release is now? Totally mismanaging your product so that in the end you don#t have the financial capabilities to support the community you fostered over 8 years????
Congratulations Aventurine, great job. Let's just hope you get this little launch right you made for yourself. Otherwise...oh wait...no, even then certain people will still make excuses for them and continue to believe in them as others believe in the Lord.
I believe this poster is hitting the nail squarely on the head. AV is a very poorly run company, and the DF nutjobs will never stop making an infinite amount of excuses for them, no matter what.

No launch is perfect, but some are certainly better than others.
We'll see how they do tomorrow. Good luck and lets hope they pull it off as smoothly as possible.
