Yea we all .. ALL of us sit behind a computer screen in a room and play GAMES. DF was not nor is it a HARDCORE PVP game. You see some in groups going after ONE or TWO and lmao yea they KNOW there REAL hardcore pvp players .. hmm ok. Thinking your something when your nothing. Like reading this thread were some call or use the word NOOB. You know were all telling the truth. Most here are hardcore PVP and been around for years lol.. yeah thats it.. I'm a PVP player.. no I AM MR PVP! Anyway what the OP said was his view and pretty much spot on. But I can join most any MMO and play PVP get a group and make sure I target a group with LESS than mine and loot and kill, find where they rez wait just out side and keep killing. Thats not PVP to me. Yet this gen seems to like it easy. What was fun for me one time was when they had like 15 and I was the only one left I keep coming back (stupid hmm maybe) but these guys were kool. They started sending just one out at a time. They new they could just keep killing me. But no sport in that or challange. DF just didnt have the money to be what most wanted or thought it should be. Its should do ok and in time be really fun. If you like it then dont let others ruin the fun for you. If you dont then move on.
PVP is being in UO, on the Baja server and having a rep to where many anti-pk guilds are hunting you down and, most of the time you play, it's your guys (normally 5-10 at any given time, roaming about) vs the 20-40 people that are hunting you down (at any given time)... when you can hold your own against overwhelming odds... only THEN, are you a pvper... if you're part of the many ganking the few, you're just some random noob loser waiting to be owned by someone with actual skill.
or, when that got boring, your guild declares war on all other guilds on the baja server... just dropping something off in the bank took a team and required you to all be fassssst.
this isn't directed to the quoted, just sorta adding onto what he said.
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
Your first part what you have played and what system dont impress me at all and its justa e-peen showing. or, it is to show that the op isn't someone who is just now trying his/her first mmo? i would go on that assumption instead of yours... a lot less tin foil hat Some points your right but they are working on most of these things your review is based on agame thats not yet finish and in his infancy. if a game is released into retail, it should be FEATURE COMPLETE... otherwise you're just paying to play a beta... oh wait... You have reviewed this game as casual themepark player then this whole review is rather useless. this reply is useless, the review was actually fairly articulate and informative. All who want something different then all the wow's out there i say go for Darkfall. no one should support a pay-to-play beta, there's plenty of games on the market for something different to do, other than more sword smashing on orcs and goblins. Macroing is a big problem its not ok its stupid to make a skill system that should take you months to bring it to 100 and then aloud macroing so all reach it in 2 weeks thats just crap. you're slamming the op, at least make your statements easy to understand. wth are you saying? Sounds are indeed terible i hope they improve on that. I think they will when mostmajor problems are solved/fixed bring patches with more featers content and complex gameplay, but that takes time. that is why games have alpha / closed beta / open beta testing -- so that a game ships FEATURE COMPLETE and fairly bug free. You have reviewed a game with short playing time that is a big fail. this post is the same Many agree becouse they want wow style gameplay, its simple as that. maybe, next time, offer some actual information, like the op did... instead you just blah blah.
seriously, until you constantly/consistently hold your own in pvp, when YOU are outnumbered... you're nothing but a noob wannabe pvper. ANYONE can gank as part of a larger team... that takes ZERO skill.
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
i really don't see how anyone who doesn't like FPS games COULD like Darkfall. GENERALLY speaking. therefore it seems kinda pointless to me for the OP to review this from a "RECOMMENDED/NOT RECOMMENDED" perspective. it seems alot like somebody who doesn't like metal reviewing a metal album, and then trying to give a judgement on whether metal fans should buy it or not.
i know there's bound to be a some non-FPS guys out there that may like it. just like there are certain metal albums or songs even non-metal fans like. but i'm pretty sure its a very small number if any of that number are reading this......, why do you like it?
Your rebuttal is moot..!
Aventurine has billed Darkfall as a MMORPG! Therefore 90% of this community and their fanbase was lured to this game because of Aventurine wild claims of a wounderous MMORPG. Just one stroll through the FAQ is enough to make any veteran mmorpg player's mouth water. So, Darkfall must be judged by those standards.
Everyone plays FPS games, but Darkfall own combat is not true FPS style and the movement and speed is a tad slow. It doesn't translate as a perfect FPS either, but all the mmorpg players were eager to try this new concept (ala Mount & Blade).
So as a mmorpg, Darkfal fails miserably!!
But as a extended fantasy based FPS or larger version of something like Battlefield (clicky) it will be somewhat successful. But the OP brings up a valid point. If that type of combat is all you are looking for, why pay a monthly fee and just not move your clan to Battfield (2nd clicky) where most top notch players in the world ARE!
Winning there has real bragging rights, where as in a game like darkfall, chasing people and popping potions just gets old after a while if everyone is doing it... How is something like that going to sustain you and keep you comming back @ $15/month..?
For instance, did you know that once enough people kill the goblins at a camp the goblins will actually pack up and leave and you'll have to find a new camp? From the review I guess not. However, one thing all reviews have in common is that there aren't enough NPCs around and IMO this is a good thing. DF has the bare nessecities in terms of NPCs. Once people start crafting and trading the reasoning behind the lack of NPCs will become apparent.
The players will never fully substitute the NPCs in a MMO. The feeling of the world being alive is given by the NPCs and the lore and not by players.
About the monster packing up and leaving, this has been dropped (along with other state-of-the-art AI features).
i really don't see how anyone who doesn't like FPS games COULD like Darkfall. metal and gothic rock are 2 different things just like MMORPG's and Action games are 2 different things.
DarkFall is Labled a MMORPG on which the OP has played plenty. He has all the rights to review it the way he did.
The OP is not telling anyone who LOVes the concept of darkfall not to buy it. Hes TELLING THE PEOPLE WHO DO NOT LIKE THE CONCEPT NOT TO BOTHER. How hard is that not to understand? The op tried the game it didnt apeal his style or what he was looking for so he reviewed it. In his review he did mention which type of players will be attracted to it.
Its like you FANs think this game is evey everyone and its the pefect game.
It may be pefect for you , but for many it may just be a standard game or a game that doesnt bring nothing interesting to that player. DarkFall is NOT for everyone. Once you understand that you will spend less time trying to defend it when someone mentions they didnt like it.

I agree totally with the OP, but I would like to add that I think Shadowbane is way more fun than DFO. The FPS style of fighting is akin to playing Oblivion on a DS lite. The mechanics are really screwy and the RPG portion of the game is nonexistant.
Eve has Depth, UO kinda had depth, Shadowbane had depth.
DFO is just a button mashing nightmare. This game should open an item mall immediately. Paying a monthly fee for this game is highway robbery!!!
bah you fanboys are whiners. Clearly the OP went very easy on the game.

haha, he gave a very honest review of the early release of the game..you are a fanboiii
Played: Shadowbane, UO, PlanetSide, SWG, EQ 2, City of Heros, AO, AoC, Daoc, WOW, lotro, Eve, GW, Tabula, Pirates of the burning sea (yup), Vanguard, Warhammer, Lineage 2
Out of all those I loved Shadow Bane, SWG (it had its issues but those first few months were great) and AO after about 5 months I was in love) RIP..not since then have I loved a MMO...
Most problems you listed in your post can be told easily from watching 2 or 3 youtube in game vedio....and I did that, just before I suddenly transformed to a "troll".
I dont think you have to log into the game to find the animation of chars is terrible or the sound effect is horrid,or the fighting system is anything but "skill based".If there is anyone who doesnt believe you,he should simply try to find a youtube vedio to watch.
Your first part what you have played and what system dont impress me at all and its justa e-peen showing. It wasn't about showing off. He prefaced his review with this information so the reader could get a better understanding of the type of person doing the review. Also mentioning he has a high end PC is good for reference if there are any mentions of lag or graphic problems in the review. Good reviewers do things like this. Maybe you should take notes? Some points your right but they are working on most of these things your review is based on agame thats not yet finish and in his infancy. The game is what it is. It's released, this is the game we have to play so that's what he reviewed. A lot of people said the same thing about AoC, EQ2, and VG when they were released. Sure, a lot has changed in these games, but the core of the game is still the same and going back and trying them a second time felt exactly the same as the first to me. Darkfall will be no different. You have reviewed this game as casual themepark player then this whole review is rather useless. I guess it's a good thing the majority of posters on this thread don't share your opinion. Maybe you would like to make your own objective review that wouldn't be "useless". All who want something different then all the wow's out there i say go for Darkfall. Really? You're pulling that card? "Hey everyone! I know you've been drinking water your whole life and are getting tired of it. Why not try drinking your own piss. Sure it tastes awful and will probably make you sick, but it's different than water!" Different =/= better. Macroing is a big problem its not ok its stupid to make a skill system that should take you months to bring it to 100 and then aloud macroing so all reach it in 2 weeks thats just crap. That's how skill systems work. The only way to deter macroing is to make the game fun to play. UO did a good job of this. You also have to raise your skills in FFXI in addition to gaining levels, but people do it through the normal course of gameplay because it is well designed. Darkfall's skill system seems to have been designed by someone who has never played a video game before. Sounds are indeed terible i hope they improve on that. Agreed. I think they will when mostmajor problems are solved/fixed bring patches with more featers content and complex gameplay, but that takes time. Hopefully it won't take so much time that they have to shut down the game due to lack of funding before they fix it. You have reviewed a game with short playing time that is a big fail. Just FYI. Most online video game reviews are done based on a short play time and ALL magazine reviews are done with less than 10 hours of actual gameplay. Pick up any video game magazine. Read any review. The reviewers are under a major time crunch to play the game then write their review. Saying the OP fails simply because he did a review before playing the game for 50+ hours is like saying the entire video game magazine industry is a failure (which I actually would agree with). Many agree becouse they want wow style gameplay, its simple as that. I would say many agree because they were expecting an MMO game and got a watered down, broken shell of an actual online world. Personally I was expecting UO in 3D. Unfortunately Darkfall isn't even close.
"There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer."
I thought it was a pretty good review, and did a job of fairly reporting on the OP's personal experience with the game.
Of course people who joined DF with their clans are having a different experience, and might be willing to overlook some of the issues that a more solo player might be observing. Doesn't make either group of people right or wrong, and it does mean that while the game will be terrific for some folks, others maybe not so much.
Stop accusing him of being a WOW/Carebear etc. He's obviously played a few games more than WOW and its ok if this didn't impress him the first time around.
In fact, EVE runs into this a lot, people give it a trial, hate it and move on. Some come back for more trials and low and behold, they find the fun in the game. DF is probably more like EVE in this regard, you're first time in just might not be as fun as you hoped. (At least until the player learns "how" to play the game in the manner that's most efficient.
Sandbox games require a player to really think carefully about how they can use the tools the game provides to craft their own personal game experience. And its not easy, let me tell you. In my two years of EVE I've had to reinvent my goals numerous times, and guess what, I'm still doing it.
DF still has time to mature into a decent game, and I will say after this review, I'm actually more inclined to try it, just for the curiosity factor.

Thanks for the good review!
It is good to see a balanced review, as most of what we hear is from the extremes (hater/fanatic).
It sounds like the developers still have a lot of work to do after 7 years in development.
It makes me wonder wtf they've been doing all this time.
Its too bad they don't listen to the testers/customers more. It seems like most of the problems are things that many people have repeatedly warned them about.
----- Its funny how people who hate Darkfall spend so much time talking about Darkfall.
I guess being a fat troll means having no friends, no girls, and nothing better to do than spew hate on internet forums..
Well, as much as I wanna scream and stomp my feet, I have realized this:
1) They are an independant company. And for a company that doesn't have big money behind them, they've done a good job. Still work to be done mind you, but all in all, not bad.
2) It's the European release. There will be a North American release later. Before you say it, YES, I want to play now. However, I'd rather stand here with credit card in hand, NOT spending my money, then spend my money like I did with WoW and waste hours of game time sitting in a Queue while Blizzard sorted it's stuff out.
I'll play this game when I'm able. It's the small companies I feel that are going to breathe new life into this genre. Give them a little bit of wiggle room and see what they can do. Granted, if this was EA Mythic, or Blizzard or SOE, I'd be on them like a fat boy on a smartie, but they have the dollars and the experience to know better.
Lets hope this MMO works as I find it depressing how so many have come out recently and failed.
Yep I dont think we'll see a good review until a few months from now. Anyone thats a true vet- you know a new release by an Indy company is just gonna be pure rough. I've played a LOT of indie MMOs so I've been around the block
And hopefully by then we'll get reviews from true VETS that have their skills, done the Clan PVP, can describe how the various magic schools work, CRAFTING, boats, etc. There is SO MUCH DETAILS missing from these so called 'reviews' its just sad.
Good review. Its all pretty evident from video footage and other feedback that this game is damned medicore at best. Hell the fanbots have been posting videos on youtube at one point whose commentary was less than happy and a summary text describing the game as "medicore".
As for the company itself seem moronic as nothing in the past months has inspired me to part my cash with them. I can beleive the review was removed form there laughable community forums. it really worries me what people allow AV to get away with. Wonder if SOE or some of the other developers are taking note of how far gamers can be pushed ?
Anwyays that said..
FPS people will not flock to this game for two reasons. FPS gamers tend to want faster action than wandering round looking for mobs / players to get new equipment.. Heck I remember FPS people getting annoyed by the "RPG" levelling elements and equipment unlock in BF2142.
FPS gamers will not find the targetting to be sophisticated and will not appreciate any technical limitations of an MMO. Actually given the passionate feelings of many FPS players between different FPS games (between hitboxes and damage implementation) I can guarantee any avid FPS player will laugh at DF.
This is AV fault (IMHO) as of they had focussed on combat and PVP they may have come up with something better. But instead we get a massive feature list and a poorly implemented reality. Lots of everything, little of anything good.
Talking about the "feature list" I would ask the OP how he/she feels about the extensive list and the actual implementation of the features. Is the list very fair to keep on there website ?
I believe they could of easily avoided some of their major problems by instituting a few simple things.
1- They should of implemented their preorder system earlier, rather then last minute. It would of gave them more time to work through any billing/account issues well before the servers opened.
2- Better honest communication with their fans. Updating their FAQ sheet, letting the community know how things are going to actually be handled well before they happen. If people know how things are going to be handled before hand, people wouldn't be "surprised" and up in arms about how things ended up. I think enabling pre-orders and account management so soon before the release, without much warning created many of their problems.
3- STRESS test the servers.. And test the release patch prior to release. It sucked having a smooth last week in Beta, then releasing a large untested patch that made the game just about unplayable.
I think if they did things a little more organized, and gave themselves a bit more time (A week probably would of cleared up some problems) the release could of been a little bit smoother. They seem to be working hard at fixing these things, and hopefully they've learned from their mistakes so the next batch of orders go smoothly. But, I believe they've lost some possible customers with how unorganized their release ended up being. I hope they can prove themselves responsible Dev's and win back some of those customers, it's definitely not too late, their overall release shouldn't be judged until at least 3-4 months have passed. Everyone should have an idea on their ability as game developers on how they handle things in the upcoming months.
Yep I dont think we'll see a good review until a few months from now. Anyone thats a true vet- you know a new release by an Indy company is just gonna be pure rough. I've played a LOT of indie MMOs so I've been around the block

It doesn't matter how good or strong the end game is if you cant hook people in the first few hours of the game. Someone's not going to plow through a bad game just to get to the end of it and have fun. MMO's and even more so skill based MMO's are about the journey to the end game. Not the endgame itself. If you don't enjoy the game until you have everything maxed out then whats the point of the game because at that stage it is nothing more then a grind.
The thing that sold Ultima Online was that it was fun from the moment you got there. You didn't have to grind endlessly to enjoy the game or reach some magical point where you became better then those around you.
I have to ask if anyone can easily go into some dungeon and kill a mob there and get a full set of plate armor then why would anyone want to purchase some plate armor from a crafter?
As it stands right at this moment Darkfall has zero economy to it. The very simplist of basic features that any acclamed sandbox game has is a working economy. A real sandbox style game has such an advanced economy that it trancends the games interface. Example and point being Eve. The game has a sorta complex auction house but at its core it is nothing more then a means to buy and sell items you make or get from the game. But the economy has transcended that by leaps and bounds. You have entire player / corp run banks where you can take out a loan or deposit money and gain interest from it. You have an entire player built stock market. You have an entire bond system where players can get other players to back/fund projects for a return of the profits. That is an economy of a true sandbox game. Its transcended the games limitations but still operates within the rules defined by the game itself. I doubt you will ever see anything remotely similar to that in darkfall because the basics of it are not within the games rules. You have mobs that spew out stuff that is easy to get that is the same that players craft.
I can even go as far to say that even way back in 97/98 Ultima Online had an economy that verged on the edge of what eve offers. There where player run banks back in Ultima Online and a crafting system that worked because the market did not get flooded by loot.
Besides that the review was fairly spot on and about what I felt from the game. Its got a ok shell but its years from being anything that they claimed it would be. Right now its nothing more then a $15/month $60 counter strike game that doesn't even meet upto counter strike players standards.

Great review, thanks for posting it.
It was interesting reading the typical fanboi replies:
1) just wait! The developers are working on a magical patch that will solve everything!
2) you don't "get" the game because ur a carebear! 111!
If you were to compare with WoW with Burning Crusade Expansion, Who would win?
Great review, shame some of the trolls had to try and rip it apart. Easier to criticise than to create.
Expresso gave me a Hearthstone beta key.....I'm so happy
Is Df worth it?

Its funny how people who hate Darkfall spend so much time talking about Darkfall.
