Something came to mind while reading the first story. is there any carry weight or backpack restrictrions, or can you basically load up on loot ad infinitem?
There is. Different items weigh different ammounts. The other day I was killing ogres that drop stone, which weighs a lot. I had never reached the limit before, and really didnt have much on me, but all of a sudden i could barely move. My sprint was 1/2 as slow as my normal run speed

How can you make that 30 minute walk? You walk so fucking slow in darkfall it probably would of taken 10 mins in a regular MMO, someone explain to me why you walk soooooo slow.
people walk slow because they are noobs and can't carry as much stuff. The less stuff you carry the faster you walk.
First of all, I know this is a long read, but if you truly want to get an idea of PvP in Darkfall, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Before this thread becomes rampant with trolls (which inevitably on this site will happen), I want to let you know why I'm writing this. For starters, I think people need to understand truly how great this game is, and why I've gotten only 5 hours of sleep the past 3 days, which I haven't even gotten close to putting that much game time into a game for years. I will go over three separate PvP experiences I've had in game with my guild so far, even though I've been in countless others, including solo encounters such as 1v1 and 1v2s, as well. Before I go into these battles, I will go over what I believe needs to be fixed in this game. To begin with, there are a bunch of mobs throughout the world that are bugged and which guilds are taking advantage of to gain easy gold and resources. This is not a game breaking issue, since most mobs work just fine, but it does need to be resolved soon. Secondly, since the UI is HTML based, it takes a while to load a lot of the clan and journal pages, which I find annoying but should be easy to fix. Besides that, my only complaints so far is that some of the sounds good definitely use some work, although many others are completely fine, and a select few of the animations could be bumped up as well. So far, with over 30 hours of gameplay under my belt (and probably more to be honest), I haven't found much to complain about, and haven't "bugged out" once yet. *knocks on wood* Ok, with that out of the way, it's on to my PvP battles. I will try to give you guys an idea of how awesome this game's PvP is, why I believe it far surpasses any other MMO's PvP on the market (in my opinion, by a long shot), and give you guys a feel of how much adrenaline was running through my system during all of these. Enjoy! Note: I will not be saying names of specific locations that these battles took place, only general areas, since it may be detrimental to my guild and future PvP endeavours. PvP Battle #1: The DeathTrap So I log into the game after the extended downtime which Aventurine was using to fix Sync issues. I go up to some guildies and hit them: perfect, no sync issues at all. Feeling the need to PvP, I get on Vent and organize two groups: one group of 10 (which is the group max), and another of 6, all located in the same Ventrilo channel. I remember seeing a guild city to the southeast of where we were located, about a 10 minute walk/run away, and we decide to go plan an attack (since it was obvious many of them were leveling up mana missles and arrows when we scouted the area before). After a decent walk, we get to a low mountain range in viewing distance of the guild city (which is quite massive I might add), and can see and hear mana missles flying in the distance. 12 of the 16 of us crouch down on top of the mountain range, in an area where they have height advantage but can't be seen from the ground. Myself and 3 others head towards the guild city, staying close together and with our weapons drawn. We got to the top of a long walkway, and instantly see 5 Alfar guildies shooting mana missles, 3 geared out and the other 2 naked. Running to them, not sprinting so to save stamina, we begin to engage one of the geared out Alfars. The other four see us and begin to attack as well. We block and parry, getting some attacks in when necessary, but keeping close eye on our health. After no more then 45 seconds of fighting, we see the reinforcements: from the west of the city about 8 members are coming down an elevator, half geared out, the other have not so much. From the south we see 6 players heading in our direction, already beginning to fire arrows and mana missles our way. The east looks clear, but after a few more moments we see 2 enemy guildies heading our way, determined to trap us and take us down. 21 or so enemy players are now determined to take us down and loot us; it's time to screw these guys over. My group of 4 turns around and bolts back north, all of us with almost full stamina. We weave left and right, dodging incoming arrows and mana missles, and quickly turn to make sure they are all following. We head slightly to the north east, just east of the mountain range, knowing exactly what is about to happen. We had laid the trap, they had bitten the bait, and it was now time to get bloody. We get to the mountain range, right of the eastern side, and the four of us are lacking health badly. I have about 20% left, and the other 3 in my group are around that range too. It's time for battle: "NOW" I yell into Ventrilo, and unsuspecting to the Alfar guildies, 12 archers and mage's pop up from the mountain range, blasting the pursuing Alfars in the back. Panic begins to settle in with them, and they start to scatter. My group of four turns around and charges straight for them, as does the group of 12. With them almost out of stamina the battle stays near the mountains. Outnumbered by at least 5, the battle rages on for close to ten minutes, with constant swords hitting armor and arrows going into people's back. As the dust settles, it's obvious who has won. Outnumbered and outgeared, us 16 managed to take down their 21+. Only two of us were fatalied, meaning that we had 14 left of the battlefield to loot everything we had just won. We quickly go to the tombstones, including those of our 2 fallen members, and take everything they had on them. Plate and chainmail, banded mail, tons of reagants, arrows, weapons, etc., all come into our possesion. As we finish looting we see all the naked enemy guildies trying to come back towards us, since they spawned back at their clan city shard. Time to dip out. We group up and head back northwest where we know we are safe, gloating in our success and new found armor and gear. The DeathTrap worked, and we've officially made some new enemies. PvP Battle #2 - When Hunters become the Hunted It's about 7 A.M. the first morning after the sync issues are fixed, and it's obvious no one on the server is trying to log off and sleep. Less then an hour after the above mentioned battle with the Alfar guild has ended, a few of us begin to crave blood again. I organize a group of 8, and we decide to head east towards the human starting cities, hoping to find some players with a lot of gold, arrows, and possibly some armor. Our mission becomes forgotten when we spot a group of 5, 15 minutes into our walk east, in the distance killing some skeleton centurions. "Perfect", I say in Vent, "stay crouched and behind the trees". Night begins to fall and our cover is even more intense, making is almost impossible for our prey to see their hunters. We wait for them to finish a skeleton centurion (since pulling mobs during PvP SUCKS by the way), and then attack. I charge forward with my starter two-hander (since none of us in the group of 8 decided to gear up much), while 5 people shoot arrows and magic. The three of us up front planning to do melee collide with the smaller group, strafing and parrying their attacks and running behind to land back attacks. We kill two very quickly, and the other three flee in terror. One of us stays back to loot the two who died, while the rest charge forward. Night becomes darker, and with the gleam of the moonlight we see a smal hill up ahead. Our prey flees northeast, up the hill, and we follow, eager for more blood and the full set of armor that one of them was bearing. Our group member who looted the last two is close behind us, and we and feel our victory close at hand. As we make it to the top of the mountain, Ventrilo explodes with "Oh sh*t"s and "Uh oh"s. The three we have been following now turn to face us, with 4 of their guildies on mounts and another 12 heading our way. I yell in Vent, "Sprint east, up on that peak", and we charge forward to the top the hill, giving us height advantage over our pursuers. We reign down arrows and magic, dropping one of the three that we had been following, and injuring a few more. Since we never run and flee in the Murder Herd, we hold our ground, enduring the attacks of our pursuers. We fight tooth and nail for 5 minutes, managing to take out one of the mounted players and nine of the ground attacks. Unfortunately, stamina is not unlimited, and once we finally run out we are overwhelmed and our live's finally lost. Luckily for us, we hadn't geared up before our adventure, so none of us lost anything worthwhile. But it goes to show that in Darkfall, the hunters can easily become the hunted. PvP Battle #3: The Stand at Tiny Island I will first say that this is probably my favorite experience in game so far, I hope you enjoy the story as much as I enjoyed participating in it. It's about 6 P.M. on Saturday night, and we have two groups of 10 thirsty for the blood of some Alfars. We make our way south towards their starting areas, knowing that the journey will be long and hard. Half of us have a few pieces of crappy armor on, while most of us are making the trip naked. After over 30 minutes of travel southward, taking down and looting a few small groups engaging in PvE along the way, we're still 20 men and women strong, knowing that what lies ahead may be quite perilous, but now slightly better equipped then before. We reach our destiny; an Alfar starting city, the one to the east, and begin our attack. We head towards a goblin camp we know is close to that area, and find a gold-mine. 13 or so Alfars all trying to level up their skills and finished their quests. Our two groups split up, making sure not to increase the chances of friendly fire, and mow down the Alfars. Many surprisingly have decent armor on, and through teamwork and communication, none of us get fatalized. We loot all of their corpses, dividing the booty equally amongst ourselves, and continue with our mission. For a good 45 minutes we travel around the starter cities, killing and looting anyone in our path, and none of us fall. We've learned through battle that by sticking together and keeping track of each other's health and stamina, it's quite easy to prevent people from dying, even when we're outnumbered ourselves. We head back to the shore, where behind us stands a small island in the middle of a guild, and rest. We talk of our spoils so far; at least 35 killed and tons of armor, weapons, gold, and reagents acquired. Just as we begin to feel like we could do this all night, things change for the very worse. Obviously, we've pissed off the wrong people. From the west in the distance, we see a swarm of people on Alfar mounts, and we know who they're after. As they get closer we realize their numbers are well over 5, and just as we decide to engage them, one of our guildmates says, "Uh... guys... there's about 20 coming from the east" and we look to see at least 12 Alfar's on foot heading out direction. They're trying to trap us in. Instinct kicks in and we decide to get to a better location. We jump in the water and hightail it to the island, ready for any pursuers we might face. Unfortunately for us, we realize that even further south, on the other side of the bay, is another group of Alfars on foot. So now we're trapped on this island, with mounted Alfars coming from the northwest, a large group of ground Alfars coming from the northeast, and even more Alfars coming from the south. All combined, I'd guess we were up against 40-50 Alfars, with the 20 of us on the island. Arrows and mana missles reign down on us, and we rush towards the center of the island for cover. As some begin to approach our location, we pop out shooting arrows and mana missles at anyone in our way. Some reach the shore on the south, and one of the groups of 10 goes to engage them. The battle rages on for well over 30 minutes, but as our numbers begin to dwindle, our pursuers begin to get the upper hand. Unfortunately for us, when one of us dies, it's over a 30 minute walk back to our location, so as our numbers dwindle, we begin to form tougher defenses, only engaging stragglers and those who we might have the upper hand of. At the end of the battle, we've fallen, our 20 members succumbing to the force that was at hand. All of our loot, from over an hour of fierce battling, is now in the hands of our enemies. We talk about how amazing the battle just was on Vent, and how much fun we've just had. I myself can't believe at how hard I'm breathing after that exhausting battle, and we decide it's time for a little break. All in all, our group of 20 managed to down over 55 people on our entire journey. 10 on our trek down there (which again is over a 30 minute walk), 25 at the starting areas, and another 20+ at our battle on Tiny Island. It's rare you can find a game where even after your group gets wiped, you still have had the time of your life. Luckily for those of us who have been waiting for this feeling for quite some time, it seems that Darkfall is there to satisfy it.
Your opening statment made me pass on your thread. You open a topic and preface it in a manner that simply invites retort by those you dont really want to hear from. Are you stupid? Or just dropped on the head a few times.
Go to DFO and post there if you feel you cannot get impartal responses to your threads, or comments here. Have I made myself clear?

.....lol.
I like the stories, they sound like fun, I just really don't like the way you tell 'em.
As dorky as it sounds...you do get excited in these kind of pvp games at times when there are consequences with failure. My first EVE kill when i learned how to scan a system for a player and was able to kill someone was heartpounding.
Thats exactly how I got my 1st kill in EVE. I was just learning how to scan a system to find people. Cought some guy off guard/warpscram/boomboom!
I was getting that same heart pounding feeling the first time I stalked a guy in beta and finally killed him. What r rush.
If you don't feel much like PvP, is there much else to keep you entertained?
Despite what people have been saying, the PvE content is a lot more enjoyable then other MMOs I have played. They're pretty intelligent, aggro from far away, and many of them take a group of 15-20 to actually defeat.
Besides that, harvesting and crafting aren't all that bad either. I haven't dabbled too much in it myself, but I have guildies who are past 50 in certain crafting areas, and they love every minute of it.
Of course, we've all been waiting for a sandbox MMO like this for years, so our opinion may be somewhat bias, but I can assure you if you like to have freedom and don't mind living in a very harsh world, you'll certainly enjoy this game.

Not really, my "opening statement" states that I want to give people a feel of what PvP is like in Darkfall.

Do you get bonuses for reaching skill milestones like in Oblivion? For example, in Oblivion, you reach a certain skill level, your boots no longer factor into your sneak die check.
I know there is no sneak in DF, but do you get to look for ward to "tiers" of skill granting a stat bonus as a reward?
One more; Can you really tell when a skill is improved? Is there any difference between say 1 point, 5 point, 10? Do you notice getting better, or is it too gradual?

Every 25 points towards your skill increases it very noticeably.
Taking "Sprint" as an example, I noticed a slight increase from 1-10, but more so of an increase from 24-25. You get a slight bonus to, let's say, "Two Handed Sword" damage every level, but a much more noticeable increase from 24-25. Every 25 points in a skill you "Level up" you skill, when every other level in skill you simply get "You skill in x has increased".
If you don't feel much like PvP, is there much else to keep you entertained?

Do each individual skill have a bonus? I assume, say, you get 25 pts in "Two handed sword", you'll get a plus X bonus to Two handed sword? Sprint, gets you a run bonus, etc? Every skill has it's own bonus?

Well every 25 ranks for weapons, archery, and I believe spells (I haven't tested out much spells) you unlock more abilities to purchase. But yes, for every 25 points you earn in a skill, you gain a much greater "bonus" then for each 1-24 ranks before that.
i.e. You notice much more a difference from 24-25 then from 25-26. Keep asking questions and I'll answer what I can.

Thanks man. I think that's all I wanted to pick your brain about for now. I was curious about the skills, because, well, I do like to get a reward now and then with a "Neat!" factor.
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
The OP was well written and sounded exciting. Normally I would not say the below but I feel DF has too much written descriptions (e.g. Lord Tasos) when reality is more grounded.
When watching DF videos do not compared in anyway to the textual description. Yes... you can PvP anyone ... yes you can take there stuff. The problem is.. thats it. No trade routes, no trade shipping, no politics, no formation fighting and dismal crafting which is most likely going to be Macro assisted.
All I get visions of when thinking of DF during the OP post, is the following :
Horrible sound effects which do not scale over distance. When your heard that battle it sounded like it was going on RIGHT next door.
Horrible Benny HIll Style fighting which is no better than the leet teh pwnzr crap of WoW bunny hopping. As I have said before I am embarrassed that Tasos invoked the words "like" M&B to describe this game
Stiff back pain induced animation with TWO.. yes ... TWO modes of attack.
Hack .. Hack.. Hack.. Run... Run.. Hack fights.. but with no real blocking. I still want to see raised shields and decent thud of arrows in them. Death should be almost instant if you are hit from behind. Hint: Thats where your buddy is supposed to be !
Sorry but as well written the post is and passionate but I don't feel the game is simply that amazing. Certainly it exists in people minds because of the lack of decent PvP MMOs and the cookie cutter forumula many companies have taken on. Fills a niche.. yeah... the second coming of Christ ? Afriad not.

The OP just wanted to tell about his PvP experiences. He did not talk about the trade routes or politics.
But if you read between the lines you can find alot of politic.
Maybe he will write about his crafting trading experiences next time?
How can you make that 30 minute walk? You walk so fucking slow in darkfall it probably would of taken 10 mins in a regular MMO, someone explain to me why you walk soooooo slow.

The politics of running around and killing things. Which I suppose a lot of poltiics is about but really where the window dressing. Wheres the framework in DF for this ? It certaily is not about "material" goods all safe in your little bank and no need to move em anywhere. Epic fail on AV part this is.
As for crafting... I would love to see a tale based on that. Oh wait everyone is macro'ing that ?
Sorry but if my mind had not been tainted by all those horrible beta leaks then I might be excited as it is just the combar invokes the points above. Fix them and I might consider this game a base on which to build. Sod everything else...

As I have said before I am embarrassed that Tasos invoked the words "like" M&B to describe this game Stiff back pain induced animation with TWO..
Afriad not.
I like this post, It is a good counter post in a way. Not anti-game, but a sort of de-grandising(sp?) and reminder that the combat isn't as romantic as it may seem.
Dinged max level on Friday, been out killing players ever since and carrying loot back to bank. Game is truly epic and the old UO feel is there, even more because it's 3d and world is actually a big big place with tons and tons to explore.

"Dinged max level"?
You maxed out every skill?
Meaning that I could actually start playing the content I was paying for from the day 0.

I have been playing for two months! And you didnt understand what i ment about politics. Ok, i will try and explain. From the OPs post you understand there are many clans, clans with citys or strongholds. The politics come in place in the fact on what you should do agenst you neighbours for example. Kill them or protext them. Because you dont want tome enemy force from another race raiding you like the op did. And this is just for starter.
And on the other side......what other sandbox FFAPvP realtime MMO do you compare your betaleaks videos to?? Just wondering.

No xp or grinding required in this game; total freedom on what you want to do. If you have brains and skillful friends you can go out and kill players with full plate even when you are yourself just starting out - hard but possible.
It's about tactics and no more about grind xyz amount of time to get gear.
Endgame is about having a guild city or as personal goals go: be mage, crafter, fighter or a combination of all.
Anyway I am converted fanboi coming with experience in: WoW, UO, AoC, WAR, DAOC, AC2 and so forth.

There is. Different items weigh different ammounts. The other day I was killing ogres that drop stone, which weighs a lot. I had never reached the limit before, and really didnt have much on me, but all of a sudden i could barely move. My sprint was 1/2 as slow as my normal run speed

"The monsters are tough. I was looking for a challenge, but these things are just too damn smart." -DF Beta Tester
"If people were dismissing it, then they wouldn't be talking about it. The well-meaning gamers root for efforts that try to raise the bar. So who's left? It's so easy being a skeptic." -Tasos
people walk slow because they are noobs and can't carry as much stuff. The less stuff you carry the faster you walk.

Neat. I enjoyed reading that Kasmos, entertaing.
I like that you included a defeat as well, usually people just boast about how 20 of them beat up on one or two people.
If you don't feel much like PvP, is there much else to keep you entertained?
Try to get your stories down to a few lines.
Cut to the chase.
I'm sure it would have been interesting if people read it.

Were you dropped on your head a few times?

Hope that answers it for you.

I was curious about the skills, because, well, I do like to get a reward now and then with a "Neat!" factor.
interesting stories.
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
The OP was well written and sounded exciting. Normally I would not say the below but I feel DF has too much written descriptions (e.g. Lord Tasos) when reality is more grounded.
When watching DF videos do not compared in anyway to the textual description. Yes... you can PvP anyone ... yes you can take there stuff. The problem is.. thats it. No trade routes, no trade shipping, no politics, no formation fighting and dismal crafting which is most likely going to be Macro assisted.
All I get visions of when thinking of DF during the OP post, is the following :
Sorry but as well written the post is and passionate but I don't feel the game is simply that amazing. Certainly it exists in people minds because of the lack of decent PvP MMOs and the cookie cutter forumula many companies have taken on. Fills a niche.. yeah... the second coming of Christ ?
