while that kinda holds true hawk, every MMO ive ever played, i allways hear people bitch ingame first before they quit. Ya i know some go silently, but for the most part (expecially in AoC) ppl will say "this game is so (insert explitive) im quitting!" the fact that a player doesnt hear alot of this is probably a good sign that the players are not leaving in large numbers. While im still waitin for my copy, i have been watchin mani's live feed every so often, and i have seen ppl talk crap on the game allready, but that was only a few ppl cuz he was killin ppl around the starter zone. The complaints were not even on the graphics but on the fact they died near a starter zone (tho if you have been payin even slight attention to this game, u would know you really arnt safe anywhere.)

Also it is unlikely ppl that are fighting eachother daily just to play this game are going to quit right away, as they are more then likely hardcore fans. last i heard (friday) there were 9k+ ppl online at once. so take that as you will.

Darkfall is a niche game. It does not cater to the masses and thus will not interest them.

Within it's niche, Darkfall should do well for years to come as long as it survives the next few months.

I played it and have stated several reasons why I hate it, its been over-glorified by its own hype just like the other MMO's and the devs have made the mistake of clinging onto that instead of actually bothering to fix the problems in the game.

Quoting people doesn't make you clever, in fact, it makes you all the more stupid for not bothering to read the quotes you post in the first place.

    Two things here...

    1.  I have played a lot of MMOs in my time and quite frankly I very rarely hear people in game complaining about the game then quitting.  Mostly it is on forums that I get the complaining.

    and

    2.  If someone is a hard core fan it is unlikely they would quite at all.  So if most players that are in game are hard core...  Then I doubt they will quite in the near future.  And they got 9k online at one time???  This compares to other MMOs how?

So, you know...  Doesn't say much for Darkstar's arguement.  Let"s see what happens over the next few months...  And then revisit this.

Correction, some popular games aren't designed to hold half of that number. The number of mobs and various other resources per server are designed for a certain amount of players.

Darkfall is able to hold 10K users because it uses zones. The map is devided into squares and each square can be considered as an instance of sorts. When you run across the boundaries of each square, there is a slight lag. That's the game loading the instance associated with that square. The players located in a certain square remain in the instance associated with that square.

It's not completely seamless as some of you fanbois like to believe. It just seems seamless just like WoW's continents are all seamless but each zone is a separate instance. This is not brand new technology. UO used it, there was a zone boundary south of Minnoc if you're following the road heading towards Britania.

Right now i see it like a big map fantasy FPS not a MMORPG.

I agree. Darkfall is either a very bad FPS, or a horribly bad MMORPG.

If I want to play an FPS I'll stick with Call of Duty or Battlefield, or some other new FPS game. But I get tired of FPS games, and I want to play an MMORPG. Last thing I want in my MMORPG is FPS combat.

    Yeah I know!

Like pressing buttons 1 through 9 in World of warcraft while watching my favorite Rachel Ray Afternoon edition on TV is AWESOME!

Yeah I know! 'cause DF is the only MMO with twitch-style combat!

If they don't like DF, they're *obviously* playing WoW because there's no other MMOs out there to choose from.

.... or at least one could think so with the way DF fans obsess over using WoW in almost all their rebuttals.

Seems some can't comprehend anything more elaborate than: Don't like DF = WoW player

Seriously... last time I checked, the world was round.

    Dear Darkstar,

I'm sure you've noticed various threads where people have asked for elaboration on the complex combat style you mention, found in Darkfall.  Most of us have seen the Doom2-style/look hands of shooting an arrow and casting mana missile.  I'm not understanding how that is complex.  Perhaps it is the melee combat to which you refer?  If so, could you please elaborate; because, it honestly looks like someone just attacking with a basic melee attack, no matter what we see.

Thank you for your time in clearing up, what appears to be, incredibly basic attacks in all the videos shown thus far.

    Yours truly,

    D

what's odd... i read the post enddream refers to, and it's a post he/she made.  in reading that thread, it sounds like enddream's ideal game is one where you can grief freely in any imaginable style.  that is ALL i saw in his/her thread.  nothing about the NPCs, nothing about finding hidden things, great crafting, prestige classes, city sieges -- just a list of ways you can grief folks.

if that's the definition of the best game of any genre, perhaps enddream should try grand theft auto?

seriously, if people are foaming at the mouth for this "game", i can only imagine how they'll feel once world of darkness is released, or heck, when walking in stations takes off in eve.   it's sad that folks are so easily impressed.

this is like a witch hunt. Does it matter wtf the combat is like? Either get your money out and try it, or decide it aint for you and move along.

Yes we have all had a bit of fun upto and including the launch. It's launched, running, working. SOme willl love, some will hate and the rest will come and go. Or do you need some kind of vindication? Have you got your house waged on this?

The combat is as complex as you'd expect from a FPS style hack'n'slash. As always there are choices to be made in the heat of the moment. What weapon to use, who to attack first, when to try to heal or run or hide. If you are frothing at the mouth in aticipation of someone claiming that the combat animations are jawdropping, forget it. We've all seen them, chop chop chop. As i've said, I couldn't give a wank about that when I'm fighting for my virtual life.

    now please, enjoy your gaming.

    Dear Niki,

You may not realize it; but, you're "posting" on what we call a "forum".  On these forums, people have discussions about various topics.  On this particular forum, the topic is Darkfall.

If you've visited the darkfallonline.com site over the past few years (which I would assume you have, and you're not just some latecomer QQing because words hurt), you would realize that many features are listed on that site.

No on has asked for animation information.  I'm not sure why you would consider animations as making combat complex?  Perhaps if we were comparing Pong to another game; then, the animations could make a game seem complex in comparison?  Perhaps.  Alas that is not the case.

On these forums, no one forces you to read, nor respond, to anything on said forums.  These are choices you make yourself.  Seeing that we are discussing a ffa pvp game with full looting, you should be aware that such games to not lend themselves to QQers or whiners.  QQing and whining will be held against you, quite vehemently.

If you do have information on the complex combat which has been alluded to, and even mentioned, yet never any examples given, please feel free to contribute such information.

Seeing only mana missiles, some basic bow attack and just basic melee attacks; I'm very interested in learning about the more complex elements, advanced weapon skills, etc.

In any pvp game, people have to decide what you've mentioned - who to attack, who/when to heal, et cetera.  These elements are not limited to FPS games.  This does not make for complex combat.  If you feel that Darkfall does not have complex combat - it has been noted.  Thank you.

Others feel that Darkfall has complex combat mechanics, and those are what I am asking for elaboration upon.

I hope this clears up any misunderstandings caused by my previous usage of English when writing to Darkstar.  Have a good day.

    Sincerly and with warm regards,

    D

I agree.  Darkfall was never intended to be a WoW killer.  A game with actual consequences for dying and and open pvp is not very widely appreciated by the players of WoW.  There are WoW players who have played UO, Tibia and the like, and are eagerly looking forward to playing Darkfall, but 99% of WoW's player base will be totally uninterested.

Other than that, I haven't played the game, yet.  It looks damn fun, though.  All the trolls go on about is the graphics, which are a matter of opinion, and the inability to access the game after "launch."  It's a small company with limited resources.  Soon enough everyone who wants to play will be able to.  Animations can be changed easily enough.  I really hope it's around for years because this kind of game is the only kind that can keep my interest for a long time.

DF was never intended to be a WoW killer simply because AV doesn't have the capability to even run their WS servers and half the time not even the game servers. So go ahead and pay to play a beta. AV wouldn't change the animation mechanics or anything else the players asked for during alpha when it was advised and they certainly won't change now. Reason is AV has their little fanboi club of delusional gamers who think bad graphics, animation, and horrible billing dept. makes some kind of old school UO with new skin. That's all DF is right now is a cheap knockoff of UO to make a quick buck and then DF will shutdown before next year just like what happened to DnL.

FYI, coming from first hand knowledge animations AREN'T changed easily enough and by the looks of how AV is badly handling their current bugs, they won't have time to fix anything until down the road and even then they will probably try to charge for it in a expansion, lol. Also, like I posted elsewhere, CCP, creators of EVE started out small too just like AV but they pulled off their launch fine. I was in beta for EvE and subscribed at launch.

Point is, AV is being delusional right now trying to sell half-done work thinking it will float and the unfortunate few who have bit the bait are buying into it until they get a rude wake-up call when those players get a email or see the news bulletin on mmorpg.com that the DF servers are shutting down for good.

     maybe you should use those english skills to reread my post again. Let me recap here for you though, it's 3am here so maybe i wasn't as clear as i thought;

I do not consider the combat to be any more "complex" than any reasonable person would expect.

I am aware of the purpose and function of the bulletin board system.

I get the impression that you have no intention of playing Darkfall, so why do you need to know about the combat? If you are seeking geniune info, look no further than your own judgement.

I am well aware of the choices players make when engaging in combat in any game, I made it pretty clear that the combat was not that complex aside for the usual undertakings such as target selection, weapon choice etc.

The animation has been mentioned alot, especially for the "1 simple attack". It is just that as I said, chop chop chop. I also noted  when I am playing and fighting, the animation is the last thing on my list of concerns.

I will add, that I presume that as more and more skills open up to you & more spells, the "complexity" in using the right stuff at the right time might come into play.

    have fun.

p.s I have no axe to grind, I couldn't give two shits about who likes what. It simply struck me that the last few pages appeared to be a witch hunt. For the record, I am currently enjoying the game, including the combat.

alpha stage my ass. darkfall was more stable in beta than warhammer was 2 months after release. i was there for both. shall i post you some of warhammer's post-release crash-to-desktop threads with 5K+ posts?

the subject line for this thread should be: "Darkfall, actually almost everyone that has played it has liked it".

as usual, the most vocal detractors have never even played it.

What do you guys think about it?

    Good...or ....Bad??

    Gonna fail....gonna last for years?

    WoW killer?.......Or not

    Thanks

Cant compare it to WoW, if only for the FFA PvP. FFA PvP will never be mainstream.

Apart from that, I think that Darkfall is just an empty shell for an MMO. If I want FFA PvP, Ill play a fps game thank you. I refuse to pay a sub for a game that doesnt have more to offer then a shallow MMO world and some ganking. And no I definately dont pay to wait for better times.

Ive no idea if it will fail, because you dont have to be a WoW killer in subs to maintain a MMO for years (just look at post NGE SWG or Vanguard for that matter).

I have just tested it on a friends account but from what I saw there DF will never be a WoW killer, it's too hardcore for majority of WoW players. However as a niche game DF can do quite well, the game seemed to be fun.

Will DF be here in a few years? Hard to tell, that depends totally on Adventurine and very much on Mortal Online that will come this year/next year.

From the times I plated the game was good fun, it gave me a feeling I haven't had in many MMO's and I loved the game for it. :)

Playing: Battlefield - Bad company (Xbox360) Arma2, DFO (PC)
    On my radar: TSW, MO
MMO's played: SWG (pre cu/cu), WoW, AoC, WAR, DFO, Planetside
MMO's that I have tested: Lotro, L2, Aion, Ryzom

I'd like to know where you got this statement from. It seems like the people who played it and hated it made a post here or on the official forums saying how is sucks (blahblahblah) and then are never seen again. However, we have our fanaticals like robertb and DarthRaiden who are very active in defending the game. I'd think it's more of a 10% like it (and have played it), and the other 90% don't (and have played it). Those 90% are either grasping onto the game in one last ditch effort to find SOMETHING fun in it, or have already quit.

The game isn't neccasarily shrinking yet because of Adventurine's terrible billing system, allowing for only a few more sales every day. However, I am sure that the game is going to be another Tabula Rasa.

I doubt it will be a wow killer. It will attract the exact opposite of the typical wow player. Though I havve noticed the wow pvp servers seem to be lower population lately. Not all of them but a few I have usually seen on high are just medium. Otherwise no impact as I still have nights of over 600 in queue.

I doubt this is from Darkfall at all. With 20k> people playing the game, the "percieved" population drops you might be seeing are probably because of the PTR being active for WoW and Warhammer's 10 day "Come back" trial.
