ok so i got a buddy key from my old account(you can send a buddy key even if you are not an active sub), and logged into the world of hyboria for the first time since the launch. I only played a little in tortage and my initial limited exposure of the game is pretty good.
The framerate has improved alot. Very smooth gameplay. I really like the improved depth of field function, where distant view is blurred and it really looked like an art painting. very nicely done. The world look as good as before. Combat is still very fun and engaging. Feels good pulling off combos and chopping heads off. Atmosphere is great and the background music is very inspiring.
THIS IS WHAT AOC SHOULD BE AT LAUNCH. Guarantee to be the 2nd most successful MMO behind WoW. Too bad funcom screwed it up and spent almost an entire year playing "catching up" instead of further polishing the game and releasing new exciting contents.
However despite all these great improvements, i don't have that urge to resub. My feelings for AoC are long dead. I lost that "awesome" feeling and the addiction for this game. I remember how excited everyone was about AoC. The hype and anticipation rose to a phenomenal level. Finally the big day arrived and AoC turned out to be a total disappointment! Insane amount of bugs, broken game mechanics, missing core features, system crashes and horrible framerate really pissed off everyone. Followed by buggy and lousy patches, lack of communications and a no-care arrogant attitude from funcom finally killed almost its entire playerbase.
sorry funcom, you really hurt me once and the improvements are a little too late...
I would recommend old players to give AoC another try when the trial is up.

Not to sure why you bothered to go back and try the game,It would seem you already had your mind made up you wouldnt play it,All the the things you list are from the past and it would seem you are still holding a grudge against Funcom and the release.
Again I will say why bother to go back and try it if you knew you wouldnt play it regardless of how good it is?

The OP and his ilk are the reason the game will never reach it's potential.
I won't ever argue w/ someone that feels pissed that they were lied to (and honestly... FC lied at launch).
The problem is, in this day-n-age, in this economy, and with this many titles (released/up coming) in this market, the "second chance" is fast becoming an rarity.
I think putting aside past misgivings and dissapointments about ANY game's content, polish, etc, and trying it again down the road, shows a level of maturity that the genre needs more of. But forgiving a developer for manipulating money out of your wallet by making promices they had no intention of fullfilling (at launch) is individual and doesn't make the forgiving or non-forgiving type of person "wrong".
I'm not in that boat, as I ignored the hype and only started playing AoC when the rumblings of improvements started. Now, I'm thourghly impressed and see myself staying w/in the game for a long time. But, would I be pissed if I had bought the game under the impression that it was a fully fleshed out and fun experience at launch and it wasn't? You bet your ass.
So, while the game (all games) experience their fair share of cynical, opinionated, lying, bottom dweller trolls that ... bounce around... and want to see everything that's not WoW fail, the OP is the type that will be almost impossible for FC to regain as a customer. And it's a shame. The game is at the cusp of retooling it to beautiful near perfection, and lots of people will never see it b/c FC lied intitally.

The game is fun if you are a new player, (I am an example of it) and if Funcom has not lied and cheated you. Now I totally do unerstand why gamers who felt cheated would never play this game again. Trust me I do, if it had happened to me I would not touch AoC even if it became the #1 game on the planet. I think this is the right mind frame to have actually, if your betrayed or the trust you once had is tarnished then you wont trust again. The problem that I keep seeing is people COME BACK ON FORUMS and bash the game and keep talking shit about it. Its ok to dislike the game, its even acceptable and unerstandable. But do a lot of people really HAVE TO come back to the forums and tell us all about it? You know what I did when I quit EvE because I hated it. I said goodbye to my friends, goodbye to the people in the forums who helped me out and I was having a lot of discussions with and left. Have not bothered to go back to the forums or game in over a year.
I don't understand why people feel the need to keep publicly bashing the game. Just answer what you feel when asked but don't be the guy outside Gamestop with a sign "Gamestop Rips you off with Trade-ins" let the people find out for themselves you don't need to play the Saving grace Knight in armor to warn us of an evil deed.
I forgot to mention, I did quit AoC like 2 days ago. But I quit on good solid terms, I liked the game got level 32, and stoped. Thats it, No real reason, I just lost interest in progressing and went back to FFXI. Thats it. But I'm not going to go around talking bad about a game because It didnt draw me in ether.
I disagree, The word of mouth from the launch players is what is killing the game. The thought of letting others try it kills some contingent who holds Funcom responsible for some terrible loss in their lives.
I quit after my 30 days at launch, but I did not hold a grudge, and it paid off.
I now have a VERY fun game to play called Age of Conan! And I cannot play any other MMO anymore.
I think most ppl agree that Funcom went over the line in NOT telling the TRUTH about what was actually going on with AOC in the last month or so before launch. And since NDA was not lifted they got a free shot of robbing ppls money.
If a person in RL robbs a person on the street he is arrested and taken to court. And the person robbed is compensated. Thats justice.
If a bank is robbed of millions - the robbers get a life sentance. And it does not affect the clients of the bank. Thats justice.
But when Funcom launched AOC ppl were not told the truth and felt cheated. Those ppl were not compensated in any way. There was no justice. The main justice that those ppl feel now is that AOC is in many respect a total failure when considering what the Developers said they were aiming for. And its pretty obvious to everyone that the future development of the game will be very limited - if any. This is based on the simple fact that so far NO content that has been added to the game - was not intended to be in it at start. Funcom is still - almost year from launch - adding the content that was supposed to be in at launch.
Why are ppl coming back again and again talking crap about the game ? Because they did not get any justice. And still to this day - Funcom IS building the game on funds they got from these ppl. Actually - Funcom is just FINISHING the game for money the got from ppl that were cheated into buying it.
Would a person that knows who robbed them or cheated them out of money (amount is irrelevant) allow that person to walk - without any kind of justice beeing served?
The answer is no. Thats why ppl come back here. And its 100% understandable. It doesn't matter what PRODUCT it is. No person with any sniff of decency would allow this to go on. They would do everything possible to warn about that product and let ppl know what is goining on.
In this case tho... The product is a MMO game. So it has a chance to improve the product.... Some ppl find that perfectly acceptable. Most do not tho. Cause lets face it. If ANY product is sold half finished to 800 k PPL and then the ACTUAL product is finished FOR THAT MONEY for the rest of the ppl that will buy it later.... You know the answer. Those ppl would still be considered to be frauds - And that is exactly what Funcom is.

MMO or ANY other product should not be judged on what is will be 2 years later. The value is based on what you buy at start. It doesn't matter if things will be "fixed" later cause ppl then need to PAY extra to enjoy that content.
If someone bought ANY product 10 months ago that was crap - It still would be crap to this day. MMO games should not be treated any diffrently.
IF they should be treated DIFFRENTLY - then the price for the game OUT OF THE BOX should not be so high. If ppl are not actually buying a prodcut at the start but for a prodcut later on - then the company should NOT BE CHARGING ppl for the box. This is where most ppl seems to loose the meaning of what the word "product" stands for. MMO does not mean that you buy something and you then enjoy it 10 or 20 months later for extra price. What you buy is in the box. Subs ... Ask ppl in Guild Wars what subs stand for...
Sorry but that doesn't make any sense to me. It's like saying a geforce 7600 is crap, and then after having it upgraded by nvidia technicians to a 9600 it's still crap. How can it still be crap when it has immensely changed to become better?
Like graphic cards, a MMO is constantly changing, and beeing added upon and tweaked.
AoC is definitively not the exeption here, quite contrary.
My best friend left after the first month, and returned months later after flaming me for playing such a "shitty game". He said the game was crap at launch, but finds it now to be a really great game. He doesn't fit in with your theory that "people who got burned in the start will not think it's any better now".
I told him not to be so butthurt over that Funcom didn't live up to all their promises, and that every gaming company in the world hypes up their game and doesn't deliver anyways (exept for blizzard, who doesn't need to put any effort into hyping up their games).

I'm a newer player so I wasn't around for the launch or any of that (I was probably playing WoW or some other horrible game) and from my time spent in AoC I have to say it has been one hell of a ride. My main is sitting at 46 right now and while I've found the leveling is somewhat easy thus far, it isn't what keeps me playing. I've joined a guild that is based around RP and have been enjoying every bit of my time with them while still being a solo player out in the world of Hyboria.
The game feels good to me, a lot better than most of the games I have played and doesn't really give a feeling of unoriginality (besides the WoW-like quest system). The combat is unique and enjoyable. The world is beautiful. The player models and creation is amazing. The story is involving. What more could you really ask for?
Sorry but that doesn't make any sense to me. It's like saying a geforce 7600 is crap, and then after having it upgraded by nvidia technicians to a 9600 it's still crap. How can it still be crap when it has immensely changed to become better?

The game had it's rock bottom and the only direction to go was up and they are still climbing. Will they ever reach the top? No idea. Will the game reach it's potential? I suspect so.

Im pretty sure you have not been following what steak and hamburger means when it comes to AOC
But again about 7600 and 9600. There would have been none 9600 if not for 7600 you say. Well.. Would there have been 9600 if 7600 would have been released unfinished ? Would ppl still be buying Nvidia products if they spend money on something from that company that didn't work when they bought it ? This is exactly what the words "what a pitty" stand for.
AOC today and AOC 10 months ago are EXACTLY the same product when it comes to the actual box that is bought at start. The PRODUCT is the box you pay for in the store. And its also a product you could ONLY use for LIMITED time in the unfinished state. Saying that the product that ppl bought 10 months ago is now working fine would be ok - IF the ppl that bought it 10 months ago could actually use it WIHTOUT paying extra for it.
If you still want to compare it to the Geoforce... You do know that 7600 version is STILL getting updates WITHOUT charging ppl extra for it ? Or you didn't know that ?
Now... Thats probably why Nvidia is the leading developer and seller of graphics cards.... Get it ?
There are some people that post stupid responses on this forum but this 1 is the worst I have seen in a longtime.
I can list alot of things in everyday life that would make this comment look stupid,
Lets take ppl who buy cars and fix them up to sell a few weeks later,or indeed people that buy houses that need alot of work done to them,they spend some cash on it and make it look like a totally new house.
Your response makes no sense in everyday life and even less sense in the world of mmo's,mmo's are always improving(for the most part)with patches,regardless if they were in your eyes 100% ready for launch you can be sure they will be better in 10 months,games like AoC and VG had terrible launches but both game's are now alot different now then they were at the launch,AoC more so the VG.
I think you should maybe step away from the keyboard and think about what you will type before typing it.

Erm - YOu do realise that we are talking about buying a product that you are not gonna FIX up yourself ? And hopefully you also realise we would NOT be talking about this if ppl would ACTUALLY have known the true state of the game. NDA from the developer prevented the custimors from knowing that.

You are putting to much emphasis on the geforce analogy here, as all I wanted to try to convince you about was that AoC at present day is *not* the exact product that it was 10 months ago.
Now I am unsure as to why you are bringing up AO, and the only reasoning I have of you doing so, is that you thought of another post while answering mine.
Again you claim that AoC at present day and 10 months ago are not the same product, and it seems as if I must do a better attempt at convincing you that it is.
I will now try with another analogy. You get an infant pet, which is useless. 10 months later the pet is able to rip apart your neighbour. It's true that it is the same pet, but it has been *fundamentally changed*. It's not exactly like it was 10 months ago, as it has evolved into something else. Something much better and efficient you might say.

The infamous Gaute Godager "hamburger and steak" analogy just shows that you are one of the many who fell for and got upset by Funcoms cynical propaganda machine around the launch of AoC.
It's sad that you choose to hate on Funcom in general, seeing as it was their propaganda officers and Gaute that stood for most of the broken promises that were spread around.

Also the "fix up yourself" part,the people responsible for AoC are fixing it up pretty much in the same way I would fix something in my house etc that was needing it,sorry but your posts arent making any sense only digging a deeper hole.
I can only assume you dont know how mmo's work and that they are always patching to improve everything about them,they are always a work in progress,so if you buy an mmo you would expect it to be better than it was 10 months prior.

What?? you said the game is in great shape, population is growing by leaps and bounds, the developers are making everything all better .... now you are saying it's being killed / dying???
Too bizarre to blame the players for Age of Conan's failure, they stopped subscribing for a reason.

Im sorry if you dont see that geforge 7600 and 9600 are not the same PRODUCT. In other words. You do not pay for the 7600 and then get the 9600.
What you are saying is that ppl that didn't like ANARCY ONLINE are saying that AOC is crap. This is NOT the case - even tho alot of the AO ppl repeatedly tried to remind us all how unfinished that game launched.
AOC at launch and AOC today are not two diffrent products. About the whining. Thats your problem. If Funcom really wants to make steaks instead of hamburgers - then they ALSO need to treat the CUSTIMORS like they are eating steaks. Not hamburgers. But again - steak 7600 and hamburger 9600 = NOT the same product. Get it ?
You are putting to much emphasis on the geforce analogy here, as all I wanted to try to convince you about was that AoC at present day is *not* the exact product that it was 10 months ago.
Now I am unsure as to why you are bringing up AO, and the only reasoning I have of you doing so, is that you thought of another post while answering mine.
Again you claim that AoC at present day and 10 months ago are not the same product, and it seems as if I must do a better attempt at convincing you that it is.
I will now try with another analogy. You get an infant pet, which is useless. 10 months later the pet is able to rip apart your neighbour. It's true that it is the same pet, but it has been *fundamentally changed*. It's not exactly like it was 10 months ago, as it has evolved into something else. Something much better and efficient you might say.
If you *still* don't understand what I mean or disagree, please try to be a little more specific as to what your problem really is, as you come off as a tad confusing to me. Sorry.
The infamous Gaute Godager "hamburger and steak" analogy just shows that you are one of the many who fell for and got upset by Funcoms cynical propaganda machine around the launch of AoC.
It's sad that you choose to hate on Funcom in general, seeing as it was their propaganda officers and Gaute that stood for most of the broken promises that were spread around.
I don't understand how other people whining is my problem btw, as I am not one of the many going on about how Funcom has cheated on my feelings.
First off - I was not fooled when it came to AOC. I was one of the person that tried to warn ppl in any way possible without breaking NDA. Sadly websites like MMORPG.COM were quick to delete all negative posts that broke NDA while the positive NDA breaking posts were allowed to go on.
Personally I posted a topic on the AOC betatest forums about 5 weeks before launch of the game. Then most beta testers realised that the game would not launch in acceptable retail state. But it was very clear at that time that the game would not be pushed back any more. It would be launched in whatever state it would be.
Now... My post was about telling the truth to the gamers. I asked Funcom if they would at least be honest about the state of the game. Otherwise we would be seeing another Vanguard. And it was not just me talking in this post. Alot of beta testers shared the same worry. I got answers from both EE and Gaute saying they would not be hiding anything. You know the rest.
My anger regarding AOC is based on the NDA not beeing lifted. It was used as a tool by Funcom to make false statements - at the same time that thousands of beta testers knew they were lying - and yet.... those ppl lying were the ppl that had said they would tell the truth about the state of the game.
Now to the point tho
MMOs are evolving games. We all know that. Thats part of what makes MMOs worth playing. You progress your character over long time. Thats what you pay subs for. For example EVE has been improving and expanding for many years (including expansions) without letting ppl pay for anything else than the subs. Not that payed for expansions are anything bad either.
What is bad tho... is releasing something that isn't worth the money that ppl pay for that particular product. This is the obvious case with AOC and became obvious in the first 5-10 days after launch. Fixing up a prodcut later on is no excuse for letting ppl pay good money for broken product. And Im sorry but AOC was very broken in the first 30 days - the time that ppl were ALLOWED to play when buying the box.
I own a dog myself so comparing AOC to a pet is not very accurate. In some parts its true tho. Alot of ppl get a dog and think it will be fun. 2 years later they realise that owning a dog is not as much fun as they thought and thats why most dogs are put down when 2 years old (no longer puppy). But if you want to compare AOC to a pet - then you have to compare it to a pet that you BUY - not a pet you get for free. I own a lab that I payed good money for. Hes a great family dog (and 5 years old now
) But... If I would have bought a dog for 800 USD that then turned out to be sick (pavo for example) and the owner that sold him to me knew... then I would have taken that person to court for cheating me out of my money.
Alot of ppl here think that because Funcom cheated "only" 35-50 USD out of each person - that its ok. Its not that much money. Well.... when 800k ppl pay that amount it turns into alot. And then you actually realise what is going on. Millions of dollars have been made with an unfinished product. But what is worst in my eyes is still the fact that there are ppl in Funcom that directly said on the betatest forums that ppl WOULD know the true state of the game at launch. They lied to me about that. And it also shows they lied deleberatly to hundred of thousands of ppl - KNOWING they were selling a "broken" product. Thats serious to me. Something Im willing to remind ppl at Funcom of for not just few weeks or months... But for years. Remember they are launching another MMO later this year...
