List your 5 worst mmorpgs

What games did you really loathe/despise and why? What made them so terrible? The list can not include games that didnt make it to gold. List goes from worst towards not so good ;)

  1. Age of Conan
  2. Darkfall
  3. Horizons
  4. Star Wars Galaxies (NGE version)
  5. Warhammer Online

1. Age of Conan

Age of Instancing, anyone? Need I say more? Ok, lets add a broken game (there are just too many things to be listed) as well then. The hype was enormous. The game did not deliver. Far from it. Games like this should not be allowed to be made.

2. Darkfall

I pity those of you eager to try this game. Its that bad. At least when it comes to player control, the user interface, combat and the empty game world. Sure, its beautiful but boy (or girl) thats about it. Its hillarious they even compare it to UO (Ultima Online). Not true at all.

3. Horizons

How cool didnt the idea of playing a dragon sound? It failed. Utterly. The game world was empty and far, far, faaaar from finished. Perhaps it was released a year too early?

4. Star Wars Galaxies (NGE version)

Yikes! It was Star Wars, but then again it wasnt. Everything (well almost everything) that made the original SWG unique was now gone. Over night, litterally. Shame on you SOE!

5. Warhammer Online

Quite interesting and refreshing at start. In a few levels it became obvious the game was shallow and had a lot of problems. Everyone hid in instances instead of bashing each others head in the open (wich is debatable!)  world. A choice of design that will hamstring the game for eternity. You get one shot. Thats it if you are after the big bucks.

I talk about games I experienced myself here only. in order from bad to worse:

    5. WOW

Seriously. I am no WOW hater, but I tried it, played it 3 months and thought why the heck everyone was playing it. It wasnt bad, but honestly, not much better than many F2P stuff. I really never understood why of all games WOW got so much success. Hated the cartoony graphics right away and the entire game might be nice for minors or parents who want to play with their kids. Totally underwhelming for any mature or demanding player.

    4. Age of Conan

Loved the combat and landscape, but first, the world is way too small and second the theme is just too narrow. Barbarians and oh look more barbarians. Thats nothing against AoC per se, but it so looked like a straight's nerdgasm. Schwarzenegger guys meet scantly dressed slave girls. *yawn* Quite a bit too stereotype for me. Plus, I find the all human club boring, since I enjoy varieties of races.

    3. Warhammer

Simply said: it was one of the most boring MMos I have ever played. Defense keep, conquer keep, it's all the same all over and over. Quite nauseating tbh. It has some cooless due to the novelty factor, but that wears off after lv 20 or so. Destro is played by Jim, Joe and everyone's mom anyway. Again way too cartoony characters to like it. And where WOW had some nice vistas, WAR's world is just totally boring to look at. The game is way too simplified and easy and it was like a Theme Park where the player is led from entertainment spot A to B through one large quest tunnel.

    2. Vanguard

What do I have to say? VG had and has great potential. But even after 2 years little substantial has changed IMO. Too many mindless fedex quests, no story that caught me at all, and in the end I never felt like I care if castle/dungeon X is freed of the mobs or not. Its like a giant walked over Telon and dropped quests accidentally all over. Both by world design and graphics the game is quite soulless. Its this lack of feeling which really made me stay away permanently.

    1. Dark and Light

Nothing to say; D&L was the embodiment of a catastrophe. It taught me that features can sound cool on paper (like migrating mobs) but in reality are abhorrent to play with.

Hi Elikal ......To be honest, I've only played a few MMOs, and the main one (the one that inspired me to give up on a decade long boycott of online games.... I knew I'd get addicted :) ) is Vanguard. Possibly because I'm such a n00b I still, after 2 years of playing, love Vanguard - despite its flaws, it still has more diversity, complexity and a friendlier community than any other MMO I've tried. Having said that though, I recognise that it has flaws - which have been reduced over time, but probably will never be completely eliminated. But I wanted to ask for a more detailed reason why you've rated it the second worst you've ever played - seems a bit harsh to me for a game you mainly seem to critise for "soulessness". Can you be a bit more specific?  And perhaps could you point me towards a game you'd contrast it to?                                                                                                                                          Thanks :)

bet neither of you have played vanguard or AoC. recently. And to put AoC in front of darkfall hahaha i stopped after darkfall. Atleast i could play AoC on the day it came out cant say as much for darkfall.

    /Phailure of thread.

Darkfalls so revolutionary it uninstalls itself.

    1. World of WarCraft - Something that was bound to happen and which birthed a trend that I hope is bound to die. MMOs were terrible enough already, struggling to progress, to catch up with the quality of single-player RPGs, but they were showing great promise of depth to come. Then Blizzard came along and said, 'You know what? Fuck progress. The lowest common demonimator reaches the largest possible audience, right?' Thus it did, and mediocrity became the genre standard. Yay, Blizzard!
    2. Dungeons & Dragons Online - Amazingly soulless. Aside from being the worst visual representation of a D&D setting I've yet seen, the entirety of it was utterly without the depth of lore and atmosphere that I feel such a name deserved. Also, why Eberron, especially for the first attempt?
    3. Lord of the Rings Online - At this point I decided that Turbine seems to have a unique ability to take IPs made of gold and somehow turn them into crap. While this had more of Middle-earth than DDO had of Eberron, the gameplay felt like an insult to it. The very last thing a Middle-earth Online needed to be was yet another hack-n'-slash, magic-flinging sociopathic rampage, and that's what it was. And in comparison to anything else it offered, that's all it was. It didn't help that their graphical engine and modelling style continued to be as god-awful as ever.
    4. EverQuest II - Who decided that after a world-shattering cataclysm, Norrath was to become Disneyland? One of these days, Smedley. One of these days....
    5. Warhammer Online - Fine art direction for this setting and reasonably entertaining gameplay, but cutting four out of six capital cities was a deathblow for me. I was already irritated enough that as a High Elf or Dark Elf I was forced to be allied with humans, and there was not a chance in the world that I was going to fight to defend Altdorf or the Inevitable City. Besides, despite the art direction, the engine was unforgivably terrible. Climax's version looked better. That's sad.

    In contrast, my best:

    1. EVE Online
    2. Age of Conan
    3. Vanguard
    4. Anarchy Online
    5. The Matrix Online

    Yes, I know.

    1- Darkfall (the worst)

2- Dark and Light (the second worst, dead one)

3- Vanguard (great game ruined by lack of interest by SOE)

4- SWG NGE (another game ruined by SOE greed)

    5- Lineage 2 (bot heaven)

    Now, my best:

1- Age of Conan (great combat system, environment, excellent quests and lore)

2- LoTRO (great game with lots of nice features although suffers from a strange gameplay and combat)

3- Guild Wars (good pvp and a nice story while it lasted)

4- World of Warcraft (good game with lots of pve but gets a bit boring after grinding same dungeons and raids for 100 times)

5- Warhammer (good pvp and fun gameplay but suffers from some lack of endgame)

    1) Horizons
    2) Dark and Light
    3) The Matrix Online
    4) Darkfall
    5) Dungeons and Dragons Online

I don't think it's necessary for me to specify why these games are the worst. We all know.

Perhaps this thread should have been titled 'the 5 mmorpgs that hurt you the most' or 'lost potential' or somesuch because most of the titles listed are far from the worst mmorpgs ever made.

Perhaps the combat wasn't fully realized, an ip wasn't given proper reverence or perhaps the launch was abysmal in your opinion but these aren't exactly the bottom of the barrel.

    In no particular order

1: WoW - Boring, simplistic, chuck norris jokes built into the game, enough said.

2: Necron - Worst interface coupled with horrendous bugs. I was surprised to hear it actually lasted longer than a month.

    3: Last Chaos - bwhahahaahhahahahaahah......hahahahahahahaha

4: Vanguard at launch (more tolerable now)

5: RF Online - cool concept, chip wars were fun, but far, far, far too grindy, and the chip wars were won by those who grinded most as higher levels were untouchable.

Honorable mention for disappointment: Warhammer - Thank you for making me lose all faith in Mythic, and realise the halcyon days of DAoC are long and gone.

    Top 5 best

    1: UO pre-trammel - Obvious reasons

2: DAoC (pre- trials) - Not much to be said. RvR was amazing, the game world was fun, as were the classes and everything else. The glory days of Mythic before they fired whoever was apparently keeping their games good.

3: Everquest (pre-kunark/aquisition by SOE) - Once again, halcyon days

4: Asherons Call - The perfect world. No, really. Tradeskills were awesome, the spell system was awesome, the lore was amazing, the world was large, expansive, and fun to explore. There were regular events and it was fun just logging in and walking around. We'll never see anything like it again, and I feel sad for the newer generation of gamers who will never get to experience it.

5: LoTRO - It was a tossup between this and Anarchy Online (post hosed up launch). The obviously great lore, and the fact that it contains a decent trade system and social aspects such as housing, music, and the like make this one stand out. One of the few modern day MMOs that still contains it's "virtual world" feel.

Honorable mention: Eve - I still struggle back and forth with this one, but if nothing else from a technical accomplishment, it deserves a place here

funny how wow is ranked here, considering it's the single most successfull mmo to date.   Anyway amoungst my journeys through mmo's something I learned is that what makes an mmo.......It's not usually mainly gui, graphics play a part, and so does some gameplay, what usually pulls people in is in fact the storyline and lore.    Think about it, all those warcraft players sunk their teeth right into say wow as soon as it was released.   New players to wow that catch any part of the lore *if they haven't played the warcraft series* usually end up staying because of the storyline.   Anyway that's what I've found so far, and from my research 90% of mmos don't have a sturdy storyline.  That's why they fail so hard, can't get into a game you know shit all about.   *fyi, most people who start wow, know someone else playing*...

P.S The only reason I focused on wow, is because of it's pure success.   Not as an MMO in general, if you wanna be successfull with an mmo you gotta see what the best in the world is doing and go with it.   Don't try to be a said "wow killer" because that's only ever ended in poorly made mmo's and bankruptcy's.   Like they say "if you can't beat them join them" there's a reason behind it.

dude seriously i must say LULZ at this. Its blunt and well put IMO.

I agree on WoW i guess although i would sorta like to try the deathknight, but i bet i'd end up disappointed.

but meh... i haven't tried all those. I've really been wanting to try AoC but no way if i dont get a new pc. its combat has always intrigued me since i heard about it and although it wasn't what i expected it still sounds cool. But i can't help but think maybe it might not be that twitchbased action i'm lookin for. There has to be a mmo out there for us with, if i may say, leet counterstrike skills. Darkfall sounded good and the videos weren't spectacular but i could dig it. it would be nice to have a guild that actually added more fun, not to mention the cities. I wonder how that game will be in 6 months. Vanguard sounded cool for a while, but i doubt the combat is what i want.

Some elaboration on your favorites would be nice.

    Hmmm my 5 worst...

man why even list 5 horrible mmos when there are so many. its like how Saerain said, fuck progress. yay for the same old same old.

Of course not, but when you ask people to list their five worst MMORPGs, they're going to be the worst they've played. It's very unlikely that many of us have played the worst available.

    Quoted for description of AC.

i also have to add despite the problems that I SEE in LoTRO, it did have a nice feel to it really. It was pretty cool being in Middle Earth. For a lack of better words(seriously i dont know what else way to describe it) its for carebears. or people who really like mmos and lotr. hope you understand me on that one.

oh and man, didn't you think AC2 was pretty awful? I kinda do miss my... what were they called tumeroks?

#1: World of WarCraft; zero depth with childish gameplay. It's only good for bringing new people into the MMO genre, but is like a disease and slowly chokes what it is to be an MMORPG.

#2: D&L; we all know why....

#3: Matrix Online; Another Smedly Medly, need I say more?

#4:[Insert ALL Asian based grind games]; This includes the new phenomenon "Aion". I've had the unfortunate task of "playing" this "Lineage III" grindfest with added glow effect & wings added. Sad to say, but I was looking forward to many games, Aion being one of the tragic ones I have put to rest.

#5: SWG(Post-NGE); It was like Smedly one day raised his hand and said "Thou art NOT what I wantith for thy game" as he cast down the game we all used to love and know, replacing it with a herald of decay and mischief to play tibbly-winks with our souls.

Warhammer- Heres a great idea. Lets create a gameworld and remove the population by creating pvp instances that offer more xp and reward than any other apsect of the game. Lazy skill tree development. Boring small world. Repetitive gameplay. You dont get a second chance to make a first impression. too little, too late now Mythic.

AOC- too many bugs, little to no itemization, broken skill trees and retarted mind boggling class balance. Terrible stealth nerfs and lies by the developers. Pretty graphics only go so far, especially if they crash your comp every 10 minutes for the first 3 months of gameplay.

Horizons - Heres an idea. lets create a huge gameworld and populate it with monsters but not create any storylines or reasons for exploring it. Also lets eliminate loot altogether and make everything revolve around crafting and resource gathering. Oh yeah and lets add dragons to make it all cool. No thanks.

Asherons Call 2- Ok now lets take an excellent thought out award winning game and completely throw it out the window and create a sequel that retains none of the originals game winning formula. EPIC FAIL. (Still waiting for a true AC sequel.)

SWG - Only played this for a month but going on a mission in the desert to kill bugs in a log then having to rest in a hospital for 20 minutes killed all future promise of this game for me.

On and like the previous poster, i need to add honorable mention for all Asian grinders. I really hate the same retarted game with the same central city filled with 8 year old selling the same high lvl crap in their static shops. I also hate killing the same crap 1000000000000000 times over and over so i can eventually look like some pokemon reject with big blue hair, wings, a blue glowing sword 5 times my size and a flying cat as a pet.

I would kill you where you stand if I heard this in person. >=(  Neocron was my #1 favorite MMO of all time. It has the best combat system ever, I just wish they had US servers then we'd be dealing with a lot less bugs, to be honest. The interface wasn't bad, but you did have to get used to it. Neocron had a huge learning curve. It wasn't meant for noobs, so... maybe this is why you didn't fit in? I kid. :3

It's late, or I'd add my own top 5. I'll revisit later.

    1) DnL - empty, devoid, bug ridden....the list goes on

    2) Darkfall- aventurine and their handling of this "launch" *snicker*

    3) Matrix Online - Just bad all around, i own it and never found enjoyment in the game

    4) DDO - with the background, lore, history of this game, it could have been monumental, but fell flat on its face

    5) SWG:NGE - ground game was changed which cause the mass exodus, without ever consulting the community.

If you think WoW is worse than D&L, you my friend, need some help with your critical thinking skills. I'm no fanboi for WoW, I got bored to tears with it too, but to say it has no depth is rediculous. For you to put WoW as the worst MMO in your opinion makes me cringe to think what you think the best is.

This is my top 5 game list of games I felt utter *disappointment* within the first game day of playing them, as opposed to games I utterly loathed. I think more of us can relate to that feeling.

You install the game on launch day, you patch, the gamescreen comes on and... Failure of game enjoyment ensues.

    1) Dark and Light - just read anything off of a wiki or past gaming history to understand this one.

    2) Shadowbane - a game with a few metric asstons of lore and promise failing so *miserably* with networking issues from hell and a substandard piece of crap game engine.

    3) Horizons - Loved the races. Loved the game lore and game world presentation. Loved the rules behind multiclassing. Utter game failure due to the game combat engine and game character / world physics were nowhere near completion. It was honestly unplayable.

    4) Matrix Online - a huge game license with tremendous potential thrown into the toilet.

    5) Dungeons and Dragons Online - forced grouping, everything is instanced, no game world to explore. No need to explain further.

2  games that I regretted buying

    - Anarchy Online  (this game got much better post launch, but I never gave it a 2nd try)

    - HellGate London  (I know its not a mmo, more like diablo)

other games like AOC and WAR I did buy at launch but did not regret

-- just was not inspired to subscribe

PC RPGs, on the other hand,

I could list many regrettable purchases

its a sad state of affairs for what PC RPG gaming used to be like in mid80s, early 90s

at least mmos have content changes with patches

Worst mmorpgs are very selective. It truly will vary by the person, their enjoyment levels and their experiences with games. I will put the 5 games I least enjoyed. I think that is what the true spirit of the thread is. Keep in mind, these are my opinions only based on what I look for in a game.

    1. WoW - The community in WoW sucks. You have a few pockets of good players, but the majority is bad. It is FAR from a pleasurable experience logging in there. It is extremely difficult to RP in there due to the kiddies.

    2. Darkfall - I have not played this yet nor do I think I will based on the horrible business practices of AV.

    3. Any of the cute lil korean grinders - I do play some F2P games, but if the toons are cute, it is a major turn off. I do not have any desire to play a high school anime game.

    4. Vanguard - It started with such promise, and I even did buy it at Circuit City during its going out of business sale, but its gameplay and "diplomacy" card game crap just wasnt there for me.

    5. Dark and Light - High expectations, utter failure. I need to stop letting my brother hype me about games
