1. Metin 2. This is a joke of MMO genre. Ugly graphics, terrific world design, primitive combat system and boring content. Of 50+ MMos i played this was the worst hands down.
2. Dark & Light. Devs just scammed their players.
3. Darkfall. After 8 years of promises what did we get? Grindfest and macro farmers heaven? Somebody should tell devs that its 2009 now and such combat system along with UI look stupid.
4. Requiem Online. L2 clone that is 100 times worse.
What games did you really loathe/despise and why? What made them so terrible? The list can not include games that didnt make it to gold. List goes from worst towards not so good
Age of Conan Darkfall Horizons Star Wars Galaxies (NGE version) Warhammer Online
1. Age of Conan Age of Instancing, anyone? Need I say more? Ok, lets add a broken game (there are just too many things to be listed) as well then. The hype was enormous. The game did not deliver. Far from it. Games like this should not be allowed to be made.
2. Darkfall I pity those of you eager to try this game. Its that bad. At least when it comes to player control, the user interface, combat and the empty game world. Sure, its beautiful but boy (or girl) thats about it. Its hillarious they even compare it to UO (Ultima Online). Not true at all.
3. Horizons How cool didnt the idea of playing a dragon sound? It failed. Utterly. The game world was empty and far, far, faaaar from finished. Perhaps it was released a year too early?
4. Star Wars Galaxies (NGE version) Yikes! It was Star Wars, but then again it wasnt. Everything (well almost everything) that made the original SWG unique was now gone. Over night, litterally. Shame on you SOE!
5. Warhammer Online Quite interesting and refreshing at start. In a few levels it became obvious the game was shallow and had a lot of problems. Everyone hid in instances instead of bashing each others head in the open (wich is debatable!) world. A choice of design that will hamstring the game for eternity. You get one shot. Thats it if you are after the big bucks.
My list is trying to follow what the Thread Starter asked for in terms of the games I despised an the reasons behind that.
1. Everquest - A great game that destroyed the Sandbox world as we knew it, and has spawned countless clones since including WOW. IF you really think about WOW is a lot like EQ more than ways than not, including raids, huge demanding time sinks, leveling, and classes such as healers, tanks, etc...... SInce the game style of EQ was so popular to many, we never really saw a successful sandbox game since its release. The last truly great sandbox was Ultima Online which was released in 1997. People want to blame WOW, you should look at EQ first.
2. Lineage 2 - For introducing me to the worst grind in MMO history. I have never experienced anything like it from each level feeling like one of EQ's hell level's to thousands of bots running around with names like "183839kejdn09" since there was no name filter. Lineage 2 was my first real introduction to the chinese gold farmer.
3. DDO - For not making a better game with one of if not best names in the industry for RPG games. And then taking such a shallow game an tacking a $15.00 a month play fee on it, which should be a crime with the lack of content. Someone else should pick up the license and make a real game out of it.
4. LOTRO - For not allowing players to play the evil side. I mean come on, this would be like a Star Wars game not allowing you to play the empire. I realize its not a bad game, but again like DDO I think it could have been much more with allowing a faction system with some pvp zones.
5. Darkfall - For putting down on paper what would sound like the perfect game for me to play, only to make it almost impossible to play and even buy if you wanted.
My list is what disappointed me personally, I realize that these are not the worst MMO's.... These are the ones I feel let me down is all
1. Lineage 2-(despised this game from the first hour...unistalled the second day)
2. Vanguard(SoH)- each time I logged in I would think to myself...what happened here? Lag, glitches...unplayable at best.....shame really, I had hopes for this one.
3. SWG NGE- in a nutshell.....they "stole my precious". SOE scarred me for life....seriously, I cant even think of my favorite childhood movies without the curse of SOE and NGE lingering in my head.....I'm 35 years old now.
4.Pirates of the Burning Sea- was hoping for a Sid Meirs pirates MMORPG....it failed to deliver.
5. WoW- I have to admit....gameplay is/was very smooth, huge population, and the game can be fun at times, I enjoyed the pvp pre-BC. But having a family and being 35 I dont have the time or desire to raid with teenagers everynight and listen to them cry over useless gear. I can see why it's popular though....
Top 5 Favorites
1. SWG PRE-CU/Hologrind - god I loved this game...it was'nt perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but it was GOOD for several reasons, crafting, skill system, items, community. I miss this game terribly and have yet to find any MMO that keeps me occupied like SWG once did....
2. Everquest 2- I really liked the game, but I could never find a decent/consistent group of folks to run with....
3. City of Heroes/Villians- just a fun, simple game to play....the best character customization I've seen in any game. This game keeps me occupied until I find something that replaces my SWG void....
4. Age of Conan- Tortage(first 20 levels....simply awesome) the rest of the game has little to offer for me...not too mention I wasted my time leveling a Dark Templar on an empty server.......could have been a great game, partially my fault...
5. Tabula Rasa-was a fun game...should have been free or held back another year before release...it was a shame to be honest.
5. WoW - hate it for the same reason i liked it. It was one of my first mmo's and I didn't realize what was actually out there as far as mmo's went. Used to love it but my taste has matured.
4. DDO - reasons have been stated over and over again i'll just say soulless to keep it simple.
3. Swg/nge post cu - They destroyed a great game in the making without hesitating to try and bring in the WoW masses to play it so they could make a buck. DAMN YOU SOE you screw everything up you touch except one game which i'll get to later.
2. AoC - Honestly the game itself had to be a complete after thought to the combat system, which i must say gets just as repetitive as any other timed combat i have seen. This game was hyped soooo much and failed soooo hard.
1. Guild Wars - Is this even really on MMORPG? It's a damn MMOPvP with single player rpg. This is an abomination to the MMORPG genre. I think people love it so much because they don't have to pay for it and have never fully played a real MMO. I could right a damn novelette on why this game is horrid but i will spare you all from that.
5 best
5. WoW - like i said earlier i used to love it at one point and it kept me going for a few years but i have grown up in the MMO world and need substance.
4. Ryzom - For a game that has switched companies and is like 5 yrs. old now it's damn good. The community is mature aqnd nice and the graphics are really good for a 2004 game. The open skill system and the player driven economy is nice and crafting that actually matters.
3. EVE - Do i really need to go into details...i think not.
2. Vanguard - Prolly the best "themepark" style game i have ever played. It has had it's issues and for once this is a game that SOE is gradually fixing for once. If this game were a sandbox it would be my fav. of all time prolly but it's not.
1. SWG PreCU - This game would of had me for years to come if it wouldn't have changed. It had it's issues back then with bugs and all but damn if SOE would have concentrated on fixing those instead of trying to get millions of subscribers like WoW it would have been the nuts.
Honorable mention goes to Mabinogi, a f2p game with open skills and the L-Rod treasure hunting and exploring feature which is pretty fun. The only f2p game that kept me coming back for more than just one day.
1. Flyff--a swipe at all asian cash shop grinders really, but Flyff was the one that sucked me in and when the spell wore off, I felt like a burnt-out husk. When it says "free", consider the cost to your soul.
2. Tabula Rasa--so much potential unrealized. This gets my nomination as the Daikatana of MMORPGs.
3. WoW--I understand the appeal and I am thankful there is a company like Blizzard that has the Midas touch, but I came late to this party and found it dull.
4. Space Cowboy/Air Rivals or whatever the hell incarnation is exists as now--ok another swipe at f2p, but I didn't think it was possible to make a flying game boring. I stand corrected.
5. Lord of the Rings Online--I really gave this game a chance and it was the one that broke my old fogey principle of not subbing for a game, but in the end the "deliver 20 boar intestines" quests overwhelmed any sense that you were in Middle Earth.
5 Games I hated the worst- Runescape, Mabinogi, Astonia, Maplestory, DragonRealms.
1. Runescape- The graphics are the most horrible part. Also i think if you work hard to build a collection of items you
should be able to weld those anytime. If you have a paid account and it expires your paid items are unusable. Hey those
were my hard earned dollars! Just not worth my time.
2. Mabinogi- Most players start this game with a desire to develop the pallidan or dark knight. Here is the catch! You
begin the generation 1 quest and find that when you begin to do the dungeons your skills you worked hard to build are
jeopardized by game freezes and just wierd things they do to you. During Tarlach's Locket quest you find you cant use your weapons or your skills you use an imaginary character's
skills. What is that? Why did I raise this character. Then during Goro's Ring again, the game freezes you spins your screen,
and logs you out when you get close to the dungeon boss. That happened to me twice. Sorry I don't have time to waste especially not all night long inside a dungeon just to be logged out by gm's. Yeah they have pets. So does fiesta. Go play there.
3. Astonia- Again and they have lost a ton of players. Pay to play but the graphics dont get better. Tiny scene to play on and not much glamour to that. Video games have become very wonderful and this game does not keep up. Also if someone manages to figure out your password and log into your account and use curse words, your account will be banned. I have seen players try to reason with the staff but they will not listen. Lost gear in here during updates although I was logged out of the game at the time.
4. Maplestory- Well I downloaded it. And well I didn't stay around. Just too goofy for me.
5. Dragonrealms- Text rpg you need to find an area to fight where there isn't someone already fighting. Yeah, well if you get a few people playing on there it is going to be a joke. Players report you if you begin to fight in an area where someone is already fighting. Also not graphics to display your appearance on here.
