True or False?
As simple as that. Tell me that you are gonna choose a "True".
Ok first im not a developper or who ever trying to sell Ryzom... but i play the game and think its great.
Im just getting tired of the bad comments based on the Beta or on little details that the dev are working on. For exemple the rubberbanding / lag issus is now fixed.
Another thing people are complaining about are quest : The Beta didnt even had them, the small quest (craft this, kill that, gather that) are called Tasks and there here to help you make cash and fame. The quests are for mainland and im not sure if they where implemented yet (im still on newbie island).
Quit whining about the 50$ and the absence of free trial.. i dont get it... do those persons ever played a mmorpg at released ?? Name one mmorpg that had free trial at released... i cant. Is 50 bucks too much ? how much do you pay for xbox / ps2 / gc newest release, Ryzom was cheaper then Fable (and i finished Fable in 30 hours). Plus you get a free month with your copy.
1- In my opinion, and im not the only one, jumping is an insignifiant detail. Lots of RPG and MMORPG are graphically 3d but 2d in movement... and some good games : NeverwinterNight, FFXI.... Oh and i never got stuck on terrains.
2- 2000 player in all severs ?! I didnt find any stats about server's population, did you ? im pretty sure theres more then 2000 only in europe.
3- The grind is a lot less perceptible then in other games, ever played L2 ? lol
So call me a propagandist if you want but lots of the bad comments about the game are based on bad comprehension of the game and on issus that are getting fix.
Im not saying the game will appeal to everyone, were each unique individuals. I personnaly find the game interesting, well developped (crafting, stanza system, RAID engine, etc..) and beautifull. I cant wait to get to mainland to see what as been changed and what is there to do (i was in beta). But if your into realistic or dark graphics, PVE only, want the usual fantasy "class" and "races", or into PVP without border, then Ryzom is not for you.
So if your interested, give it a try and make your own opinion... if your not cheap and can aford 50$ for a game you will play more then 30hours just to build your opinion about it.
Oh and Hawkin : come on, you really think the devs or marketing would surf forums just to try and sell the game... im pretty sure they've got better things to do (Marketing campain, bug fixing, etc.)
just started playing this a couple of days ago, here are my initial thoughts...
There are some lag issues, but they are only a minor irritation, nothing too annoying.
Players seem to be exceptionally friendly and helpful.
Quite a learning curve, but thats a good thing, nothing like the fresh feeling of figuring a new world out.
Graphics are pretty good, though not outstanding.
Skill development is excellent, tons of options to choose from as you level and earn points, and all skills are editable, so you can get a pretty unique character on the go.
Missions, so far, nothing exciting, although I'm still on the starter island.
Summary, well worth a look, much less of a sense of grinding than in a lot of the other games around at the moment.
This game is getting the attention that it deserves. There is little hype with the game because it is barely a game. I was borderline on this game and have played a few weeks in open beta and 3 weeks since it went live. I canceled my account this weekend. There is some good points to the game, like graphics and the ability to master all skill trees. The bad points of the game far outweight the good, the new stealth nerfs the added that were called "server re-boots" swung the pendulum to far for me.
This game has a horrible grind to it with little or no sense of accomplishment. If you think Lineage 2 is bad try getting some skills over 100 and see how long it takes you to go from 101 to 102, and then realize there is 149 more levels to go. I was an armor crafter and harvestor. Armor splits off to every peice at 100 so to get a set of q250 armor you have to lelve 6 trees from 100 to 250. I enjoyed being able to harvest my own materials and create armor to sell to other players. Even though 3 weeks after release there is no NPC vendor to sell your goods to other players through, I continued by taking orders and advertizining in zones. Since there is such a low player count(max I ever counted was 50 in and around Fyros, do a /who and see how few are actually on) it was easy to keep up with orders, I could make 5 sets a day. I still do not understand how a crafting central game does not even have the basic mechanisms in for a NPC vendor to list items. This is only the tip of the iceburg, and I can live with this as they stating a patch was coming soon... which is already passed due from thier promise date. It sad that the game has started with broken promises.
Because players were advancing to fast, via harvestors getting good materials from the prime roots and other zones, the devs decided to place high level agro mobs at portals. Now when you zone in you are dead before you zone through. On top of that the decent spots to harvest materials at post 100 quality level are all camped by agro mobs. The only response that has been posted on the boards from GMs is that you shouldnt be there unless you can kill the mobs. It was ok before were you had the occasional death from trying to get materials to craft, but now its 100% death rate when trying to get more than 1 pull from resources. The lack of content has forced them to place mobs in prime locations to stop harvestors/crafters from advancing. This will slow down the mele/magic levels and buy them time. This shortfall in their game is unacceptable. The choice the player has now is to level up mele combat far past crafting and harvesting or have a guild camp your resources spots so you can get enough materails to supply them with armor. It takes 1.5 hours to get enough materials and they will be subjected to 10 fast respawn mobs that range from lvl 150 to 200 and have to fight them with 100 equipment.
I have had 2 packers full of resources and armor become unavailble. I can see them in the game and target them but they do not appear on the map and when i try to get my resources from them I get the message the are out of range. I have sent in bug request with no feedback.
There is no economy in this game. I had over 10 million dappers and absolutely nothing to do with them. If you are underl lvl 80 you will not see any of these problems. It is an absolute waste for me to grind with q50 mats at my lvl since i recieve under 50 exp for a full set of armor.
After you get over the newbieness of the game and start down a skill path you will see the problems in this game and realize its yet another shell of a game complimented with promises of content that should of been in the game when it released. This is why there are so few people playing and so little hype. There is really nothing to hype.
Truth to tell, I don't care either way - they're all opinions as far as I'm concerned and I don't read any further into them than that. I'm intelligent enough to read the good, the bad and the moderate and come to my own conclusion. I assume most others are capable of the same.
I've been playing Devil's Advocate with you because I find your take to be quite arrogant and presumptuous.
Let's start with your key philosophy..
To summarize: Any review or opinion that is all positive, with no negative points to temper it and bring it closer to a "moderate" review is suspicious to you as likely being propaganda or possibly an ad. This is basically your position, correct?
Well, if you are really committed to that theory, then let's look at your review of it and see how consistent and even-handed you are. Shall we?
1. First.. your review.
"Another EQ clone poorly presented, bored even on the first day of playing. Graphics suck, you cant have a different camera view during combats, you see only you back during combats. Worst game i've ever played. Still I dont know why the rating is high, i simply think that the rating is misleading."
Well.. would you look at that. There's not a single positive comment in there! It's all negative!! You're such an advocate of balanced and fair reviews that give both positives and negatives, yet yours is completely void of any positive elements. Gee.. it must be propaganda!
But.. that's not all.
2. I've seen at least 2 other posts by you regarding people's posts who've been overwhelmingly positive by saying that, basically, you feel they're likely propaganda. It's like you're on some crusade to cast doubt on any opinion that's as strongly positive as yours is negative.
3. No matter how you try to reason it, or how many reports or theories you cite to try and back you up, you cannot say with any authority that a cumulative rating for a game is "misleading" when it is the averaged score of *everyone* who's voted. That's 312 total votes, with 166 supporting comments for Saga of Ryzom. So I guess you believe that a vast majority of those 312 voters who brought the score so high are all just people trying to spread propaganda? I highly doubt it.
4. Finally.. I couldn't help but notice that rather *large* banner AD for "Wish", a competing MMOG, in your signature.. Doing some free advertising for your favorite MMOG, perhaps?
So let's pretend I think along the same cynical track as you. If I read your overwhelmingly negative review of the game and take those other 3 points into consideration, it would seem to me that it's you who has the agenda here and are trying to spread negative propaganda, by trying to make people doubt, or second guess the game - all based on your personal opinion of it. That's all this is all about, Hawkins... people's opinions. That's my point. You can agree. You can disagree. But it is completely arrogant to go around playing "Propaganda Police" telling people to be wary of a post that seems "too positive" to you.
If I were to write a review right now, it would be overwhelmingly positive, because that's my opinion of the game at this moment. If you came back and said "Uh oh... this post is just a little too positive for my liking! Looks like possible propaganda or an ad!", I'd politely tell you where to shove it.
Please.. get off the "propaganda" kick... it's ridiculous and it's baseless. You don't like the game. Fine, that's your opinion - which is no more or less valid than anyone else's, no matter how strongly you disagree.

No, you've made an absolutely wrong assumption here.
"Basically, all-positive posts are 100% accurate and are perfect for one's purchasing decision to be based on. And there's no chance that an all-positive post is a propaganda AD, so you need not remind yourself of such an AD before your use your credit card or cash to pay."
My point is, the above statement is a Fales to me. And I dont think it worth a further discussion, unless you choose otherwise. As simple as that. And to me, my message is actually not that difficult to take, that's the common sense a consumer of any kind should take into account before a purchasing. What surprises me is that you seem to argue for the opposite, which is, to select a True for the statement.
To further simplify the case, it comes to the essence in ONE sentence,
"There's no chance that an all-positive post is a propaganda AD".
I simply say it's a false, while you dont seem to face and answer if it's true or false directly and keep trying to twist the sentence into,
"All the all-positive posts look suspicious".
Let me give you an analogy,
"There's a chance that a famous painting is a forgery, be careful before you buy one".
"All famous paintings look suspiciously to be a forgery".
Is it hard to see the twist for you, and for all other readers stoping by the thread you think?
Moreover, you may keep trying to twist that sentence and keep making people think that the lil reminder is because I hate the famous painting or Picasso too much. In contrary, I find no reason why the guy next to me should hate my reminder that much, even when he loves that painting insanely. The one who's selling the painting may not like it thou.

Umm.. I realize where you're going with that and I understand the concept completely. Basically, caveat emptor.
For the record.. my answer to that is neither "False" nor "True". In the context of a message forum, which is what we're talking about here - I see everything as opinion... which is neither true nor false (unless you're talking about facts.. such as there being 4 playable races in Ryzom right now). So your example is moot. Were we standing in the middle of a store looking at an ad banner and having this discussion.. well, then yeah... of course that holds true. We're not, though. All we're dealing with are people posting their views on a game. Might some of them be employees of Nevrax or whatever? Possibly. But neither you nor I are in a position to say either way. So, I simply consider everything opinion.
Like you, I've already made my points here. Your throwing this philosophical game of "true or false" at me is irrelevant to where the debate began and, at least for me, where it remains.
I don't know you personally. But, your motives are questionable because what you've said/preached and your own actions are inconsistent - sometimes in direct contradiction with each other.
- You've said you favor fair and equally positive/negative reviews.. yet your own review is completely negative. Some people call that hypocrisy.
- You've deemed the votes of potentially 300 people on the game as "misleading" because you personally find the cumulative score "too high", compared to your own opinion of it. This is particularly baseless and obsurd.
- You only seem to be concerned about warning people about the posts that are all positive, but have not, to my knowledge, ever done the same about those that go all negative - like your own. After all, couldn't someone have just as much a motive behind completely slamming a game as someone does praising it? I certainly think so.
If you ask me, you either cannot accept any opinion that you strongly disagree with and so try to find a way to diminish it, by "warning" other readers to be "wary" of its sincerity because it seems too positive to you. Or, you have some kind of agenda here.. I don't know what it is.. but I have my suspicions.
After all, if you hate the game as much as your review, and some of your posts have revealed, and aren't going to play it anymore, why are you hanging around? There's certainly *some* reason... It's certainly not to support the game, or contribute positively to the community. You're not even providing constructive criticism to the company on how to improve it..
Maybe that giant "Wish" banner in your sig has something to do with it.. Maybe not.
Either way.. I'm done. I'm gonna go back to enjoying Ryzom.. No propaganda or ads necessary.
"If you just step away for a sec you will clearly see all the pot holes in the road, and the cash shop selling asphalt..." - Mimzel on F2P/Cash Shops
Actually it's you who keeps me coming back. I'll leave till I see noone is trying to twist my point, direct it to what mistakes I've made in my review, or how much I hate the game, or how Wish appears in my sig (that's something new ) or whatever totally irrelevant to and can hardly unjustify that single point I am trying make. Especially all this is from someone who doesn't even dare to face a simple statement like this,
"There's a chance that a famous painting is a forgery, be careful before you buy one".
or this,
"There's no chance that an all-positive post is a propaganda AD".
Moreover, I love my sig. And dont buy Wish, it sucks.
"There's a chance that an all-negative post is a post from an other company.... let's say Blizzard or ..."
That painting thing just don't work I think, and who cares, it doesn't matter at all. The only way to know if the opinions are true is to buy the game...

I agree. Using analogies about fake paintings does not apply here. In concept, Hawkins is correct - if you're standing in a store with a Sales person giving you a pitch of why the "product of the day" is the best thing since sliced bread, then yes, there's reason to be wary. If I ever find myself looking to purchase a piece of fine art, his would be wise words indeed.
But, his application of that theory to forum posts is just baseless and ultimately pointless. They are opinions. They might well be written by someone from Nevrax just trying to hype the game up. Does *he* know that? Can it be proven either way? No, he doesn't, and no it can't. In the grand scheme of things, does it matter? No! It's an opinion. A few out of out of who knows how many. Take them or leave them. Agree or disagree. That's my central point. Hawkins doesn't seem to understand that and keeps banging this drum that somehow because I don't agree with his "propaganda theory" in this context, that I would just buy into anything without questioning it. Which is not true. I'm extremely skeptical - when it counts and makes a difference. And skepticism in a message forum makes no difference, because in the end, it's all opinion and everybody has one.
However, what bothered me enough to get involved in the debate here is there is no reason nor justification to go around warning readers of a message forum that a post might be propaganda because it seems possible by one person's estimation. Especially when that person has shown a clear bias to the opposite - posting an all negative review and forum posts. And, since I last posted, I've noticed that SoR is, overall, getting positive reviews pretty much across the board.. website reviews, player reviews, etc.. all seem to have the game's overall score right at around 8/10. So, by and large, people are enjoying the game... which further weakens the "misleading review score" idea, too.

Lets look at it like this...

Lets just end this silly discussion with a simple answer to both sides:
People ARE biased, some more than others. No one can truly remain unbiased when giving an OPINION. as its their opinion.
