This is not a troll post, this is a genuine post formed to get an idea of what the game, player base, and company are up too and you expectations and experiences. Please do not try to sell or belittle the game, but rather an honest impression of what you have seen and experience, or are expecting from this game if you are not playing it at the moment. I have no desire at this moment to play this game, and might think about purchasing it in a few months if I do. Might be helpful to those who are still on the fence (but remember, jaded players have long term memories, so answer honestly).
Game
1) Updates – I have seen almost nothing from Aventurine in 3 weeks regarding any serious patching or notes about patching. How are they handling bugs and exploits, as well as fixes?
2) Customization post character creation – clothing, armor, player city placement and designs, etc. Does everyone and everything look the same (within the races) or is there very good diversity for the skill level (not talking about what one toon at lvl 1 armor looks like vs a toon at lvl 100 armor)
3) Economy – fubard? Working? Still in development? Lack of a centralized market or vendors make this very iffy, scouring Trade channels can be very frustrating
4) UI – unintuitive or easy to use, overly complicated or simplified, clumsy or streamlined? What’s your take?
5) Crafting outside of structures – worth it? Or does loot take precedence (not talking about player loot, but the stuff you get outside of player made items)
6) Skills and “Jobs” – Do skills reinforce each other, such as in EVE which you have multiple skills per system, or is it just “If you want to run faster, you grind your run skill”
7) Skill Diversification – Are there enough skills to diversify yourself from another within the same, umm, “Class” (I am using the term class loosely and is not meant as a set class)?
8) Hybridization vs Specialization – Is hybridization (someone proficient in skills like archery and swords) going to be better than one who is an expert (or higher level than the hybrid)at one skill (say swordsmanship)? If so, then why specialize?
9) Cities – Other than actually owning one and being a target for a siege, is there any other reason to own one? Can a city be specialized (like for crafting, warfare bonuses, etc)?
10) Animations – while graphics for the most part of any game can be overlooked, since you become “Desensitized” towards them after seeing the same area repeatedly, players usually concentrate on their or another toon. Are animations overly simplified to the point where watching your toon becomes boring? And if so, does it lose your connection to your toon?
11) Seiging and Cities – Broken? Working perfectly? Needs Lovin’s?
12) Character Development – outside of combat and crafting, what other skills or “fluff” can one expect to find?
13) Soft cap of skill points – rumors of this exist, but none have actually seen it. Ideas of what it might be or if it even exists?
14) Weight of items – like oblivion, does an item which weighs heavier cause you to slow down? Do your actions slow as well?
15) Splash damage and AOE – if you cast a fireball (example – can apply to melee as well) at say 2 people, will those directly in the line of fire get the most damage while those on the outskirts of the splash zone receive less?
16) Skill sets – are there particular skills which are unbalanced, or do you feel over all everything balances out?
17) Customer service – Quick? Helpful? Or the opposite?
18) Do you feel connected to your character?
Company and Miscellaneous
1) How do you feel Aventurine is handling the launch?
2) Communication from the devs – More than enough, satisfactory, or below par?
3) Implementation – what do you feel the devs could have done better implementing in game?
4) Do you feel the game is moving in the right direction, flat lined, or taken a step back?
5) How do you foresee Aventurine handling the game (post infrastructure) in the future, with updates, content, etc?
6) Infrastructure – Given how Aventurine has handled the infrastructure thus far (3 weeks + ), are they living up to expectations, surpassed expectations, or no lived up to expectation?
7) Are you experiencing a large numbers of bugs, crashes or other related glitches?
8) Queue – we all hate queues, but given how the server has not yet reached capacity (roughly 20k accounts or characters created, and at peak hours, rule of thumb is that 20% are on at peak hours, and IF their server can handle 10k concurrent players, box sales should theoretically be at 50k per server) do you think Aventurine will be able to get the queue in check, or will this be a serious issue in the future?
9) Have you spent more time in queue than in game?
10) Do you feel that Aventurine should give more free time due to their infrastructure issues and ridiculously long queue?
11) Launch woes – after 3 weeks, launch issues and infrastructure issues are rampant…at what point does launch woes become serious issues? 1 month? 3 months? Etc.
12) If you are currently playing this game, will you resub at the end of the first 30-33 days? Or if you are not playing right now, will you be picking it up in the future and how soon (if you plan on it)?
13) If you were the head dev on this project, what is your first and foremost duty for this game?
14) What is the first thing you would like to see fixed/implemented/added in the coming months?
15) After their infrastructure woes and how Aventurine is handling it, are you worried when billing comes into affect at the end of this first month? Such as wrongful charges, mistaken cancellations, etc?
16) Other – please feel free to add anything I might have missed which might concern you
Yes I am sure there are spelling and grammatical errors, so feel free to chop it up.

Just to briefly answer your question, the whole issues with hacking have been blown significantly out of proportion. I personally have not seen a single speed-hacker or any kind of hacker for that matter and neither has anyone in my alliance which is about 150+ people. Don't let a tiny tiny minority of the players in Darkfall stop you from buying what is in essence a fantastic game.
The Darkfall team have said they are aggressively working to tackle any one speed hacking and i've heard it's working, however like i said it's only a tiny fraction of a percent that are actually taking part in this.
"Don't let a tiny tiny minority of the players in Darkfall stop you from buying what is in essence a fantastic game. "
When was the last time you held "essence" in your hand?
I will wait until Darkfall is a fantastic game, not in "essence".
All you are saying, in "essence", is, "Don't worry about hackers, sure there are people hacking, but in "essence" there are so few you won't even notice, I mean my alliance of 150+ people NEVER see anyone hacking, ever! So it shouldn't stop you from plopping down your 50 some odd bucks or Euros or whatever, in "essence" this game is perfect."
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!

Also, after reading dembar's post, I realized I forgot to add that HTML for the journal/clan tabs annoys me as well. Both features are fully functional, but they could be sped up.
edit: crap, I forgot about mahirim 4 legged running as well.

This is the only thing I have time to answer. Simply no I will not. This isn t a flame but it isn t what I expected. I m getting bored already, even though I saw numerous posts of people saying it will get boring fast, I didn t listen. To me anyways and quite a few of my guildies we will not return.
Too many questions to answer in the time I have at the moment. I will say that I am in an alliance of several clans whom I talk to regularly in various vents. Last night there was a serious downtime that gave me a lot of time to roam around and talk to our friends and allies. Everyone I spoke to absolutely loves the game. The only issue is obviously the current state of queues, and a recent server sync issue in the most recent patch (which hopefully is fixed today). Warhammer and WoW both suffered from a horrendous queue problem as well shortly after their releases, so most people are used to going through a rough spot at this stage. Does it suck? Yea, it is annoying as hell. But to everyone I talk to thinks it is worth enduring because there really is no other place out there offering this type of experience.

I like you review of the game, nicely done on that but here... this post... I don't know why people waste their time. You talked to a few people on vent in your clans and they all seem to really like it? Well obviously that is a random sampling that we can take to heart *rolls eyes*. I played WoW and WAR at launch, I had no waiting in WAR to get in, some servers did, but mine did not. Same with WoW... some servers did, others did not. You could play BOTH of those games at ANY time because there was many servers. Don't try to feed people BS
Just to briefly answer your question, the whole issues with hacking have been blown significantly out of proportion. I personally have not seen a single speed-hacker or any kind of hacker for that matter and neither has anyone in my alliance which is about 150+ people. The Darkfall team have said they are aggressively working to tackle any one speed hacking and i've heard it's working, however like i said it's only a tiny fraction of a percent that are actually taking part in this.
The whole point of the hack is that you can't notice it.
Jesus christ get with reality. Nobody is going to turn up "super speed" to hack, they are only using the unlimited stamina hack. And that in and of itself is game imbalancing.
You fanboys kind of answer your own fanboyism. At least I get it now.
There is no other sandbox MMO that offers full loot. That's why you're playing this game. Not becuase it's any good -- it really isn't. It simply lets you have fun with your guildmates like DAoC might have, UO might have, etc. Whatever game you came from.
Most reviewers acknowledge the downfalls of Darkfall and as such, play it anyway. It's about wearing the rose colored glasses for a game that you WANT it to desperatly be. It simply isn't.
For those of us in the age of reason, we have moved on. For those of you with a guild saying "omg full loot!" you will probably enjoy it (for a while). And for the hardcore fanboys, it doesn't really matter because they are idiots.
I think you fall into the 'guild' fanboy. Play this game without your guild, with a PUG and I guarantee your experience will be altered.
Wow, so many people here are eager to try and twist my words to fit their agenda. I am not feeding people BS, just because you didn't have a queue in Warhammer does not mean it was not an issue. I played on Mannoroth in WoW at launch, and there were silly queues, as well as on Skullthrone in Warhammer. Believe me, I am no stranger to the frustration of waiting to play the game and having a crash, then having to wait again.
Everyone I have talked to who plays the game is enjoying it, and I will take my sample over yours, which consists of reading forum posts by people who never played the game. There is such a rush to brand fanboi on anyone who can find good in the game, just like you guys always complain about having the same thing done to you. I have written 4 articles on the game, and in each one I try to show things that bother me.
Why is it so impossible for you, as someone who does not play the game, to accept the fact that we, people who do play, are enjoying it. The reason we enjoy it is not because it is the only option, but that fact gives some of us a bit more tolerance towards the early issues this game has, which are no difference than many of the early issues recent MMO's have had. To say that the other games didn't have queues, because you didn't play on a high pop server is a hilarious attempt at spin.
Clearly the game is not for you, and you have no doubt reached this conclusion a long time ago. You can post 1000 threads about how you think it is fail, but your forum posts will not convince a single person who is playing it and liking it that they are somehow wrong, and that those who are not playing it are somehow right. The game is not for everyone, and I made sure to open my review with these exact words on purpose. The fact that despite that, you guys still hang out here every day speaks volumes to the state of the genre. If there was an MMO out there worth playing that wasn't recycled WoW dung, you would probably be there instead of here.
Keep going on your forum crusade and quoting forum posts as gospel. We do enjoy watching you trying to convince us we are somehow wrong, and you are somehow right. The game simply is not for you, and it is akin to watching a vegetarian hanging out in the parking lot of a steak house trying to convince people who are leaving the place satisfied that they did not enjoy their meal.

Best response to the "Hacking" issue I've seen so far .
Not really a good analogy, but if you insist...
We are not saying that you shouldn't like the game. What I'm saying is that you like the game because you have a support structure (your guild) to enjoy the game with. People you "talk to" are also the ones waiting in line for HOURS in the queue to play, and also in guilds. I would say they are not your average casual gamer.
For those of us with jobs, families, lives outside the game, we get only a few hours a day (at most) to play. Right now, that translates into NOT PLAYING. For you I suppose, you have a lot of free time or no job, or you're in college or who knows what, that allows you to spend your timing waiting to play, and then enjoying it afterwards. Great for you.
As for "not playing" -- I played the beta, and realized multiple things. First, that this was a grind as long as WOW without macroing. Except it was far more boring. There were 'levels' in the game by the way they designed the skill trees. Combat had no depth and took no skill. The GvG fighting was probably the best thing, but like I said before, I didn't have hours upon hours to designate to playing the game, and then even more time to level up in it. You obviously do. That's great, and we are happy you're enjoying it.
But your 'review' leaves all of that out, pushes the positives and ignores all the negatives of the game because you're trying to "push" the product just as much as any other fanboy. While I don't think of myself as a troll (and you might, that's fine), I think it's a reasonable reaction to having a guy who peddles a positive review in his signature saying that it's the equivalent of a vegetarian telling a carnivore that veggies are better. It's more like a carnivore telling ANOTHER carnivore that the piece of meat he's eating is really just an old tire, but since there isn't anything else around the guy keeps chewing on the tire, because there's not much else to eat that even resembles meat.
1) Updates – I have seen almost nothing from Aventurine in 3 weeks regarding any serious patching or notes about patching. How are they handling bugs and exploits, as well as fixes?
There have been about 9 updates.. but nothing really has been noticable. I've heard that some of the patches were to just remove some monsters that players were exploiting the first few days. I know one of the spawns that my guild exploited to get our city started the first 3 days is no longer spawning. They did fix the sync issues, but they haven't really added anything to the game
2) Customization post character creation – clothing, armor, player city placement and designs, etc. Does everyone and everything look the same (within the races) or is there very good diversity for the skill level (not talking about what one toon at lvl 1 armor looks like vs a toon at lvl 100 armor).
Not really. The majority of players run around naked with their newbie weapon. There are also a few melee weapon types that are dominate, so people are migrating to using them exclusively ( melee weapons with long range).
3) Economy – fubard? Working? Still in development? Lack of a centralized market or vendors make this very iffy, scouring Trade channels can be very frustrating
Absolutely frustrating.. there is no way to really trade goods other than personal transfer. This makes crafting pretty much worthless, because not only will you waste time gathering resources, making an item, but then you have to spend a lot of time trying to find someone to buy it and actually get to that person. In 1/20th that amount of time you could have killed a goblin and gotten way more 'profit'.
4) UI – unintuitive or easy to use, overly complicated or simplified, clumsy or streamlined? What’s your take?
Depends on what games you have played before. If you've played War, AOC, WOW, LOTRO or any of the normal mmorpgs the UI will annoy you. It is very slow and unresponsive. If all you've played were free2play games or really older games, then you will be fine. The layout is pretty clunky, but most of it can be customized. But even when you get your layout good, it still is 'old and slow' feeling.
5) Crafting outside of structures – worth it? Or does loot take precedence (not talking about player loot, but the stuff you get outside of player made items)
Crafting is pretty dead unless you are the type of person who likes to do things the hard way on purpose. Trading/economy are nil, so the only reason to craft items are for yourself. The problem is it takes so long to gather materials and make things.. and the low level goblin just outside of town will drop that same item 20 times in the amount of time it takes you to make it yourself.
6) Skills and “Jobs” – Do skills reinforce each other, such as in EVE which you have multiple skills per system, or is it just “If you want to run faster, you grind your run skill”
If you are comparing the DF skill system to EVE, forget about it. The skills are very seperated and there isn't any overlap. If you use a sword, you gain sword skill.. that's basically it. If you cast a magic missle in the air, you gain that skill. As far as I know, there is no interaction between skills. Basically the way it works in DF is that you will raise on ranged skill, either archery or a class of magic. You will use your ranged attack til the target gets to you, then you use your melee attack (whichever you want). EVE has tons of secondary skills that you can use to support your main attack skill. DF is much much more primative than that. EVE has skills like precision, rapid fire etc... DF has nothing except the basic weapon skill.
7) Skill Diversification – Are there enough skills to diversify yourself from another within the same, umm, “Class” (I am using the term class loosely and is not meant as a set class)?
Yes and no.. daggers, swords, axes, polearms etc are different skills, but they don't really seperate you. Like I said before.. what sepeartes you is what weapon you use, and which form of range attack you use. There are many schools of magic, but they all have basically the same spells (but with different colors). So basically every player will have a range attack and a melee attack. The names of the skills will be different, but they will play exactly the same way.
8) Hybridization vs Specialization – Is hybridization (someone proficient in skills like archery and swords) going to be better than one who is an expert (or higher level than the hybrid)at one skill (say swordsmanship)? If so, then why specialize?
Everyone is specialized.. pick a ranged attack, pick a melee weapon. I doubt there are any 'pure' melee players or any 'pure' ranged players. Everyone will have 1 of each.
9) Cities – Other than actually owning one and being a target for a siege, is there any other reason to own one? Can a city be specialized (like for crafting, warfare bonuses, etc)?
We dont' know yet. They weren't done in beta and they aren't done now. You can bind there, you can craft there.. but the big thing is just that once your guild has a city, it makes it easier for you to organize group pvp.
Animations are pretty terrible. Graphics overall are good (you can take nice screenshots). The combat animations (melee) are very very repetitive. you basically have two attack animations. Mounted combat is nice in theory, but it's unwieldy and doesn't work well in game.
11) Seiging and Cities – Broken? Working perfectly? Needs Lovin’s?
Seemed to be working fine. There are no real tactics (yet?).. just big pre-announced zergs.
12) Character Development – outside of combat and crafting, what other skills or “fluff” can one expect to find?
Exploration is fairly decent. It is a nice map with unique points of interest that you can stumble upon. There isn't much to develop your character outside of your main weapon skill.
13) Soft cap of skill points – rumors of this exist, but none have actually seen it. Ideas of what it might be or if it even exists?
No idea either. My guess is there isn't one. In a way it is like EVE where you can have Turrents and Missles trained to max, but you can only use one at a time. In DF.. there really isn't any reason to train more than one melee skill or more than one ranged attack. Most players will just pick one of each, and keep training it to max.
Yes
16) Skill sets – are there particular skills which are unbalanced, or do you feel over all everything balances out?
Right now the melee weapon skills with the longest range are the only ones being used. The disadvantage of them (possible going rogue because of hitting someone by mistake) is greatly overshadowed by the benefit of the added range.
17) Customer service – Quick? Helpful? Or the opposite?
The company still has beta applications on it's homepage. How do you think the CS would be? The game is 'policed' by volunteer players and there are only a few large guilds. Everyone is macroing, you better hope the person finds you is from your guild or alliance.
18) Do you feel connected to your character?
I quit after 2 1/2 weeks. There was just too much cheating going on. Towns were filled with people macroing. The guild I joined got their city by having everyone camp a bugged spawn point for 3 days. Almost everyone is using newbie weapons (no drop) and are naked, so the big 'feature' of darkfall (full loot pvp) is meaningless since most of the time you kill someone, they have no gear that is lootable. Darkfall is just a very primative MMORPG that has gameplay like you can find in any free FPS. If you have never played any MMORPG before, you might find it cool. But if you've played even old UO, DF will just feel primative and unprofessional.
Company and Miscellaneous
1) How do you feel Aventurine is handling the launch?
I think they did the launch the only way they could. I think they lied about a lot of things though. Tasos stated that the server could handle 10,000 players at the same time. The game probably has about 2-4k players online at a time now and can't handle it.
2) Communication from the devs – More than enough, satisfactory, or below par?
There has been none. Not even patch notes. They have talked about nothing in game except for their plans to allow more people in game.
3) Implementation – what do you feel the devs could have done better implementing in game?
4) Do you feel the game is moving in the right direction, flat lined, or taken a step back?
Well, it has moved forward since launch. They fixed the sync problem. Overall, the game is a huge step backwards for the genre. It's like playing UO on a private server.
I think DF has a problem with this. You stated the rule that 20% of accounts play at a time. DF is MUCH higher than that because of macroing. What players do is play the game normally, but then when they would normall log out, instead they are staying in citys and macroing overnight. This is probably one of the reasons DF has queues now. The devs probably expected a higher percentage of players to actually log off.
They really need to do something about 'naked' combat and trading. The whole selling point of DF was the 'full loot' aspect of it. And it's simply ruined because armor doesn't give enough benefit and newbie weapons are 'good enough'. A person with nice armor and a nice weapon isn't significantly more powerful than a naked person with a newbie weapon. I'm not sure if crafting/economy can ever be fixed. Even if they add auction houses AND fix the naked/newbie problem, you still have the problem where monsters drop gear at a much faster rate than you could craft them. Resource gathering is very very boring in DF. I just can't see anyone mining for an hour when they could just kill a few goblins and get the same item.
14) What is the first thing you would like to see fixed/implemented/added in the coming months?
15) After their infrastructure woes and how Aventurine is handling it, are you worried when billing comes into affect at the end of this first month? Such as wrongful charges, mistaken cancellations, etc?

These are just some thoughts off the top of my head
Many things you posted, above, lead me to believe that you are not, in fact, playing the game yourself.
Is this correct?
Well you sure figured me out, I guess I enjoy it because I have no life! I guess the manufacturing company I manage and operate with my family since I was 17 years old doesn't count as a job, or the girlfriend I have had for years doesn't really count, and my family must be non-existent even though I work with them on a daily basis making machine parts. The degree in business I spent years getting at Penn State University was a figment of my imagination. See how easy is it to pass judgment on other people? All of this over a video game? Is this how desperate you are to try and justify your own view is to throw out blanket statements and personal attacks?
I will tell you that you are correct in the support structure aspect, and I have repeated this time and time again in all of my write-ups. This is a guild oriented game, and to fully experience all that this game offers, you should be in an active guild. If you are not, you will miss out on politics, city building, conquest, and lack what I think is an almost vital support system to help when you get knocked down in the harsh world this game has.
My review must have been so biased that it was the most read online, and considered by many to be better than those written by paid review sites. I clearly am not credible since I have been featured on Massively 6 times and MMORPG.com 5 times in the last month or so, and have the ear of the devs of the game.

Yikes! Easy there Paragus.
I'm not sure where you got the personal attacks and passing judgement out of his post?
You did realize that the sentence included: "...or who knows what, that allows you to spend your timing waiting to play, and then enjoying it afterwards. Great for you." He was listing a few more common reasons that people have more time than others to play a game. Obviously some of the choices on the list hit a nerve with you for some reason.
It wasn't a personal attack or passing judgment... at least I didn't read it that way.
When you went into your litany of your "humble" list of "accomplishments" with your posting prowess... it didn't exactly strengthen your case of being a casual gamer with a limited amount of time. Just saying.

I never passed judgment on you or your background, I just made an implication that you had more time than a lot of people to play the game. Now whether that's from having no life, or no job, or being in school, or whatever -- that I don't know and I'm not speculating on. Take a chill pill and calm down.
Your review is the most read online because of a few reasons. The first of which, is that no major publication can get their hands on the game. Being featured on Massively 6 times and MMORPG 5 times only means that you're one of the few people who are writing about the game in a way that isn't showing poorly constructed sentences and making a coherent point. The fact you come here to defend the game regularly, shoo away the 'trolls' says more about you than it does the trolls. There was a priest in the 1800s who used dates in the Bible to calculate the return of Christ. And off in this field they went, waiting for Christ. He obviously never showed. Not to worry, he proclaimed, he calculated the dates wrong. And they went out again to wait for him. And they were wrong again. Every single time, more and more people kept following him even though he was continually wrong. It's now transformed into a religion, the 7th Day Adventists.
That's exactly how your review works, and what you're doing here. You are telling people the game is great, while ignoring the downfalls that people with LITTLE TIME simply don't have. And every time people come forward and say "well, this game isn't exactly what you're saying", you say well, you need a support structure. You need patience. You need to work harder. You need to stop trolling.
It's no wonder people continually keep reading in the HOPES that you are right. They are looking for that game that gives them salvation. And while Darkfall isn't it, your prophesies and "review" lead them to think otherwise, even though the reality doesn't match your conclusion. You can have fun playing it. You can have tons of fun waiting in line and not minding that. But don't come here with a holier than thou attitude saying "I have the ear of the devs!", constantly fighting the trolls on the forum, and then say you're not a fanboy.
You're the biggest fanboy there is. And you have a lot of free time on your hands to do it too.
thank you to those who answered the questions, it's actually been pretty informative thus far (minus the posts from robertb and a few others :P )
By the way, your "most read online" review is a ridiculous claim.
Hell, there are beta leaks that are well done and bash the SHIT out of the game, that are more watched than yours.

That's hilarious that you would make that claim though, and then use it as a proclamation that people actually give a shit what you write. You have a bunch of articles written that have averaged at about 2000 views per post. If MMORPG or Massively have nothing better to run, they can post your rantings on their page because they are well written. It's an easy way to get content they don't have otherwise.
Your Darkfall review has 35k views. This review:

Has a LOT more (use Alexa or some other traffic monitor). And it's a fair and negative review of the game. I love holier than thou attitudes that look down at others, because usually, they are easy to crack because they are full of shit. And you sir, are totally full of shit. And you don't have the ear of the devs either, but I'll let you live in the fantasy that you do.
these are all problems that will be non-issue's in 3-5 months, but the fact that they are problems in the first place makes me question AV's sanity. I mean the implimentation is just HORRIBLE, like 10 yr olds did it.
The thing that pisses me off the most is that crafting is useless b/c nearly everything is easier obtained from mob spawns, and there is ZERO skill diversification, there's a grand total of maybe 100 skills, including spells, and at this point there would have been MUCH more customization if they went for WoW's class system.
You'll find 0 major differences between person to person until you come upon REALLY skilled up mages, magic is the only part of the game that allows any diversification at all.
EDIT: first of all, lets hope the game survives long enough for these problems to be fixed, if AV continues this train crash for 3 more months you can garuntee that there will be no more AV come summer.

I don't see how a company that is poorly performing and goes out of business is a BAD thing in any way, shape or form.
If anything, it's a good thing because it makes the consumers who stuck with the game (fanboys) a little less likely to be as stupid to believe everything a company says the second time around.
I can't help but think of CNBC and the Daily Show commentary when I think about fanboys. LOL
