Disappointed in the "Open Beta" title for Spellborn

FuturisticFuturistic Member UncommonPosts: 41

I know I know, I was in too much of a hurry to try the game that  I missed the part where you have to pay 15 bucks to be able to experience full content. Well, in my honest oppinion, that part is retarded. I didn't even want to keep going because I knew I'd just want to keep playing more. Yes, that probably means that I should just pay. Well I don't want to pay, unless I get to try this particular game for a long enough period of time to come to a conclusion.

You don't call an mmorpg "Open Beta" stage if you have to pay to play full content. It's completely misleading in every way possible. First of all, the European servers aren't even in Open Beta, they're in "Final" stage. Only the US servers are supposedly "Open Beta", even though there's nothing "Open Beta" about them. Yes, there are lots of players in the beginning zones, and yes, they are testing the servers. But that's still not "Open Beta" as long as you have to pay to get past a certain level and area.

People keep saying "They aren't charging for the beta. The game is free until level 8", well, that's not called Open Beta, that's called a FREE TRIAL. HUGE difference ffs. I'm not expecting this game to be Free to Play, because honestly, I hate free to play mmorpgs. I would rather pay for a certain game and in return get a good MMORPG, but this is just seriously misleading. The developers are taking advantage of the word "Open Beta" to gain popularity.

If it said that this game was in Final stage, and that you'll only be able to reach level 8 without paying, then I PROBABLY would have tried it.

A game that really DID have an Open Beta was Lineage 2 (this is just one example). It was completely free to download and register. You had access to every single area, every single item, every single class etc. You got to try full content for free during a period of about a month while they were testing the servers. THAT'S Open Beta. Spellborn is NOT Open Beta....>:C

Mildly inclined to agree. Beta means test the game, get as far as you can, server wipe and then subscription. TCOS (I always say 'TACOS') is bringing this game to market in a really strange fashion. So if I pay for more content and it goes out of 'beta' does that mean I loose the toon I payed for?

    There is NO miracle patch.

95% of what you see in beta won't change by launch.

    Hope is not a stategy.

I don't think they are going to wipe after beta.

  • DjfusionDjfusion Member Posts: 186

They already confirmed that it will NOT be wiped.

Technically, it is open beta, I won't argue with you there.  But the TCoS open beta is different.  The game is released elsewhere, which means the only thing they're testing is the server load; stress tests are necessary.  Also, your characters don't get wiped after launch...so if you decide to pay to play past level 7, you're paying for the actual game.

You're just angry you can't play as much as you want in the OB...

I agree that "Open Beta" isn't really the right term for what they're actually doing. But "Releasing Quetly While We Stress-Test Our Servers" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.

It is a strange title for the stage of the game. Its obviously not beta if they are accepting people's money. Runes of Magic did the same thing. You could buy things on the cash shop during beta. There was also no wipe at release.

Oh well.. The difference is only in the name.

So will we have to buy the box? or pay like 49.99 for the game or just pay the monthly sub?

  • QuizzicalQuizzical Member LegendaryPosts: 25,531

Would you prefer that they not let you play at all yet, until they have everything ready for release?  If so, you can impose that restriction on yourself.

Would you prefer that they declare the game released even when it's obviously not fully ready for release?  Or would you complain that it was broken at release if they did that?

  • daylight01daylight01 Member Posts: 2,250

Well unless this has changed(I cant see why it would)you dont have to buy the box just sub to the game,if you did buy the box you get in game time that pretty much adds up to the same.(this was right at euro release, might have changed now)

Prerelease should have been more suitable.

I think alot of the quirks was worked out with the time since the part release in EU. The quirks that open beta is for working out.

I'm so broke. I can't even pay attention.

There is no box to buy.

The game is free to download and play as much as you want to up to level 7.9...you can make multiple characters and level them to 7.9 if you want.

After that you much subscribe monthly.

You can buy a boxed version of the game in the certain parts of the EU as it has released here and I am sure that will happen when it releases officialy world wide.

here is a link to a Dutch site for the boxed version.

    Just the sub.

The EU market had a box you could buy, but tI believe that came with three free months of sub, so it worked out kinda the same. That was a different publisher though obviously. I personally we will ever see a TCoS box from Acclaim, but, hey, Ive been wrong many times before :)

Whatevs. If you wanna play the game and not pay for it, you can't. If you want to try the game for a long period of time, pay $15 bucks.

Doesn't matter what they call it. It is what it is, no biggie.

No one's going to care if you can just download it for free and sub.

I agree. Paying for content is kinda stupid. Artists don't need to eat or pay bills, it should be free.

Your post looks like you thought you could play for free, and now you are angry, I'm not sure but this is what I understand reading it. There is no free things in life, well, actually a few ones, but the result of people doing a job, like developing a game and maintaining it running is something that needs to be paid. I know that free stuff is nice, I like getting stuff for free too, but everybody need to pay the bills, even the TCoS developers.

It's called development, dude. People need money to afford things like food. Quit whining.

I don't know if you realized this, but they are not forcing you to pay. If you think it's worth the money, you can do it, but if not, than don't. Don't be so upset that you can't get CoS AND that big lollipop you saw in the candy store. These are called descisions. Big kids have to make these sometimes.

You are right. People are never happy and act like a bunch of complete idiots!

At least with Spellborn you can try the game for free and play till level 7 without having to pay a dime without any time limits.

Or do people prefer to be ripped off like Aventurine does, by letting you pay 52 bucks and then put you in hours long queues days in day out, and when you enter the game, it's void of mobs. Completely empty and just full of L337 kiddies PK'ing eachother. Because that's all there is to do lol.

I don't know tho.... but I prefer the Spellborn way.

    Cheers

At one point I woulda agreed with the OP...Open beta, used to mean you could play all you wanted for free. But over the past couple of years, open beta has simply become the same as 'free trial'. Age of Conan is another I can think of that had 'open beta' but not past level 20.

Besides...in beta testing...few people actually understand the idea of 'beta'. I been in alfa tests where the players cry n complain about all the issues XX game has. Beta is a testing phase, open beta is a free trial phase.
