Why is player housing so high up on the wish list of so called mmo players?
Wtf r u supposed to do with housing...sit home and watch the fireplace...?

MMO's should be about adventure, pvp stuff like that.
Go out get your stuff, live in barracks while moving thru friendly zones, move fkin on...
go play sims if u need housing...

One of the main reasons I think that people want housing is that it adds to the depth. You feel like you are apart of that world that is your house you can also sometimes store things in it which is useful. So all in all its more of an aesthetic thing I think.
I want a house to show off stuff I've done. I also pay money for it so they get a monetary time sink out of it because there is an initial cost and rent. When I go there I'm instanced and off the main zones so I'm playing but not someone that they need to calculate as much data for.
In LOTRO I hold an entire kin so that I can have 3 more chests of storage. It's not just a fireplace, it's a packrats dream.It also allows me to trade stuff in the communal chests w/out paying for mail costs. Instead of it sitting in storage for 2 weeks in the mail storage - I simply move it from one bag to another for all the server cares - that's one less counter that has to tick down. To decorate my house I grind for more "rare" items or craft items or go to dungeons for them.
The real question is... why does every developer NOT want to give me a house for all it does to keep me playing.

Houses are nice for showing off trophies, crafting, skilling up on a trapped mob in privacy of your own home, growing things in a garden, etc
Also great for showing off all the loot you dont have on ya atm.
more important for a game with player driven content. Mainstream gamers, like the OP, are better off playing the straight forward, simple Asian grinders and such
Play Wurmonline seriously for a month and you'll come to love housing.
Though I will admit housing DOES NOT make sense for nearly every game on the market. None for "World of Everclone", and even only a little bit for even your niche games like Darkfall or EvE(atleast for most of the player base).
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
You can't work out that people playing a character in a virtual world might actually want a house they live in?
Some people Role Play (gasp) in mmorpgs - part of their character is that they have somewhere they live.
I don't care for them myself but I understand that some people do. Not my job to tell them how to play the game, if thats what they enjoy more power to em. My wife has all my cool house items I got in EQ2 - her house is insane. Weeks spent getting it how she likes it. Mine - I had my sales crates.
Depends on what you consider 'housing'. Many EVE players live in POSes (player owned structures). You can setup guns to defend them, do research, park ships in them, refit, craftm mine minerals, etc. Even in high sec many are setup for researching prints
The simple answer is that many MMORPG players are interested in the "virtual world" concept far more than they are interested in the structured content and actual gameplay of a traditional model. MMO players are a diverse group looking for very different things in their games.

Op, first off, a house is a great place to put your stuff.
Soncond off...you're underestimating their usefulness in PVP.
Sniping passers-by from the rooftop can be a blast....especially when they get pissed and go get a bunch of friends, and you and your buds try to "hold the fort", so to speak.

Seriously, some of the best PVP is to be had in player-made cities and towns. Having a place where you meet up with your buds and get buffed up for battle, showing off the trophies you've all contributed to the place over time...
Housing is MASSIVELY underestimated and undervalued by todays average MMO gamer, who only sees the next piece of purple loot.
I enjoy decorating my house, and showing it off to my friends. I like having the extra storage space it allows, I enjoy having a place to display my trophies and awards.
For me it is about immersion. I want to feel like a part of the world I'm playing in. Housing is a big part of that. I play WOW and don't feel no where near as immersed in the world as I do in Vanguard and EQ2.
It is nice to camp in the wilderness for a couple of days of hunting. but it feels so much better to go home and kick your feet up in front of the fireplace. having an ale, talking war stories with your friends that come over to visit.

In a lot of games, housing is purely fluff. In the case of instanced housing, it's nearly invisible fluff, at that. Some players are taken in by fluff, but there's no real point as far as game mechanics go.
In some games, though, housing is functional. For example, you can't do much in A Tale in the Desert without having a camp. You can build your own, share one with a guild, or whatever, but most activities in the game require you to use some particular structure that you build in your camp.
Why is housing disregaurded by the new generation of single players turned MMO player?
Is it really that hard for you to understand that people actually enjoy housing? That it add an extra dimension of immersion and fun for people? It makes an MMO feel more like a virtual world, and less like a game?

haha i dont remember housing in Conan..i thot they were always on the move...isnt that what games are supposed to be? as said before if u need housing for immersion, u need to be looking for a diff kind of mmo, rather than expect the current crop of mmo's to provide you with housing.

We want housing because it's a Role-Playing Game.
Sadly, due to the popularity of your mentality, the role playing elements are disappearing and we are getting stuck with games with nothing to do but quest and craft. No benefit for exploring, no housing, no open worlds, just quest after quest.
well unfortunately hardware doesnt support an endless list of requirements from gamers..
Devs today, focus on mechanics that provide immersion with a medium term in mind, housing is not one of those.
Then again there are too many functions around housing even if you feel "immersed"

you expect hardcore pvp, decent pve, but yet u want a house nobody can mess with?

Looks like you never got to taste classic Ultima Online. Houses back then were used for crafting, selling goods, having guilds and more storage. Having a house back in old UO was a safe spot for your PK toon to hang out in and get more items. PK's back then could not enter towns. It was cool to log in and have my PK house camped by many players. There were so many reasons to have a house in the good old days.

You are right, the current crop of MMOs don't provide housing. Also an odd coincidence that the current crop of MMOs completely suck.
You are also right, I am looking for a different kind of MMO. I'm looking for the kind that requires an active brain. I'm looking for the kind that encourages social interaction. I'm looking for the kind that used to be made, before they started being massed produced for the inept masses. SWG had an awesome housing system(only one major flaw which was easily fixable if SOE was at all competant). Great game.

I don't see why adding player housing would ever be considered a bad thing. It could give a place to store things in like an extra bank. A place to customize and make look unique, so it could be another way for all those that like to be special show off. Could get a bonus for sleeping in the bed like Fable 2 does in the homes in it. In games like oblivion I enjoyed buying the houses, and thats just a single player game.
One other game comes to mind for me right now, Home for the PS3. From what I have seen it is just a 3D environment to talk with frieds, and the biggest draw seems to be a home that can be decorated. It also has a few minigames, but the home to hang out with friends and maybe watch a movie seems to be the biggest draw. I have not been able to experience it first hand, just know what I have read or watched in previews for it.
I see housing to be a nice bonus to any game, and add a bit more realism to any mmo.
Agreed.... also a good adition adding to realism that could be hybrid to any "auction house" are players shops! Not like guild shops though and the ability (with extra cost defined by the player) to have the item delivered.

well asking for features like player housing should be just about last on the list for any mmo targetting a large base. Housing may b ok for niche players and markets.
But the concept sucks, coz the game should centre around the environment not your pile of bricks u would like to call a house.
Ok so the Graphics or pixels you call environment are different than houses Ingame ...because ? I cant feel the sun of the environment and i certainly wouldnt "build" "brick by brick" a house. As for the masses, let the masses have what they want. And let all the other people have what they want. Each to what they find best on which note i d rather be in a game that provides for Me and let it have minimum amount of people and 1 server . Sounds ....amazing indeed!
