Daarco, I by any means, am not a DF "hater". I usually say live and let live, play and let play. But, just because DF has 3 things all bundled up that other MMO's don't have, doesn't make it more "complex". If they had been able to release with the list of features they had intended on their website, then maybe, just maybe that bucket would hold water. Many other MMO's boast features that are most definitely not in DF, and many MMO's boast combinations of features not found in other MMO's. DF's list of actual "features", at least the last I was able find, was a much a shorter list than many other MMO's, and yet still a little more than some other MMO's.
Positives over weighing the negatives? A matter of opinion, but as long as you are enjoying the game you are playing, then more power to you, I will not fault anyone for that.
(As a side note, I got in on the beta for Fallen Earth. Not gonna say much, but I will say that I do find it harder and harder every day to get the motivation to log in.)
This is an outdated census of all the clans in the Major alliances in the game right now. If you add them all you will get over 9000 people (), and that spreadsheet does not even include dozens of major well-known clans like Murder Herd which has well over 100 people or even the entire "Afghanistan" alliance of TheMercs (the ship owners), not to mention dozens of smaller clans that most people have never even heard off. For example as a result of a little research, I found out that there are more than 7 Japanese-only clans only 2 of which are on this chart.
One could argue that many of those have quit the game and that would be true to an extent but keep in mind that extra members may be taking up bind spots at the clan stone and make the roster searches on the browser interface slower, as well as the fact that it costs nothing to kick a member. Especially in the case of Hyperion Kingdom, every clan is taxed weekly according to the numbers of its members and therefore keeping extra dead weight seems like a dumb idea.
And of course let's not forget the thousands of solo players that do not belong to any clan for whatever reason.
My guestimate of active subscribers would be at least 20 thousand as of right now.
And on the subject of total people buying and being exposed to the game I'm confident that it would be a bare minimum of 30k considering the number of butthurt ex-fanbois or misguided carebears that cancelled their subscriptions.
Now, on the subject of the magnitude of the battles I reckon you don't read much of clan discussion. The 2k number refers to a series of sieges that happened on Yssam. For everyone's information I have to add that in those sieges the alliances that took part are the Hyperion Kingdom + Yssam VS Coalition of the Chilling + Stasis + Dusk + Death.
That's 2287 vs 4000 according to the spreadsheet. And that's not including several seperate unallied or mercenary clans that took part. Obviously most of them, especially on the CotC side did not get involved or where not even online, but suddenly 2000 participants for a planned event does not sound like an impossibility.
Now obviously all these people where not within viewing distance of each other since it has been demonstrated quite a few times that when the numbers a person views exceed a few hundreds then half people crash and most of the rest have considerable lag, with only a minority of people that can play normally.
But on the other hand nobody has the evidence to dismiss the posibility that all these people fought within what the server considers a "Zone".
So to sum this up, nobody claims that big battles are smooth, both client and server need tons of optimizations. And Tasos' statement can obviously be considered misleading since it wasn't a 2000 people battle in the LotR sense of the phrase but still potentially true in some way, if 2000 people actually occupied and fought on the same server "Zone".
(let's see what response I'll get for this)
Normally, I try and stay out of the flame wars, and plan on continuing to do so (though I may not succeed here), and understand, this is not to flame, but simply to get some clarity:
You argue that Anvil is throwing around numbers with no evidence to back them up. Now you provide a google spreadsheet as "evidence". Now, bear in mind, anyone can go online and make a google spreadsheet, it really isn't that hard. Without true, hard numbers from AV, how can this spreadsheet be proven as something factual and true? If I were to flame, that would be my first point of attack, and it is a valid concern. How do we know some rabid fan didn't just arbitrarily come up with this list and some numbers (people have done stranger and more inane things in this world)? Until hard, proven numbers can be given, all of this is just conjecture on all sides. Even using the Xfire numbers would be sketchy at best, because everyone playing DF would need to be using xfire for a complete look at the whole picture.
Flame on.
You are correct, I should have elaborated more on how this spreadsheet came into being. This list started as a collaborative effort between Cheatle of Kirdain and Zarithas of Awful Company both highly esteemed members of the 2 biggest alliances (which are sworn enemies btw) and the numbers were drawn from the clan roster of every clan. That is publically available information on the in-game webpage of every clan and considering that this list was available to the community everyone could help improving it by contacting the ones maintaining it, if they saw an error. Also I can see no reason for anyone in this process to try to fudge the data since everyone wants accurate numbers about the size of their allies as well as their enemies. And considering that the worse curse word for an alliance at the moment is being called a "zerg" then, if there was any incentive of foul play, it would be to deflate the numbers rather than inflate them. This information would be publicly available and verifiable by anyone outside the game when (if) Aventurine materialises the feature of allowing access of all in-game browser content to anyone outside the game (that according to Tasos they are planning to do "with the next couple of patches") but until then this the best and the most accurate information the community could come up with and that is what I have to offer.
<Mod Edited: Maybe I'll learn to argue the point next time instead.>
Concerning the amount of active subscriptions within these clans I did mention that the numbers were not accurate from that perspective but not I, and I'm guessing neither you have any reliable data about the ratio of people that have canceled their subscriptions for all these clans.
Now, you are claiming that interest for this game is dying all across the board. From my understanding, by calculating information from various sources, including Darkfall forums in different languages (google translate ftw) I came to the conclusion that this game is not going to be dying soon, not in one month, not in 6 months. For the opposite to happen I would guess that either Aventurine is going to have to start screwing up a lot harder than they're already are, or Mortal Online should come out and be superior to Darkfall in every way.
But that's just my honest assessment and should be taken as nothing more. I would although advise you to leave this particular forum and visit pretty much any other Darkfall forum on the internet if you really want to gauge the actual interest for the game. You know, places where people actually talk about the game and their experiences, advise new players and form communities. And nobody is shouting "Stop trying to sell us your game!!!". Pretty whacky stuff for this forum to handle.
Also, about the 2k number, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Tasos was full of shit, everyone knows he often tends to be. All I'm advocating is that it may be a plausible statement, since no one here is aware of the game's architecture and therefore what constitutes a server "chunk".

Noooo! Dont take away my hopes for a future with amazing MMOs : (
And i know i overdid my statement some. The three features i talked about were examples. Stil i have not found any other MMO to play since SWG (2005) so im really in need of sandbox MMOs.
And about DF beeing a flop. We have not even sen the beginning yet. A small bunch of amateurs (they begun in a friends basement) have got about 30k-50k players on thier server. When Aventurine begin to sell thier product.....we will see what happens.

Aventurine has already begane to sell it's product (6 weeks ago)..!
They have sold approximatly 9k slots, to their 1 world server! And will go bankrupt within a few months if they cannot get additional funding for a second server..! They need more subs.
No online game can survive with 9k-15k players...! There isn't enough monthy income to be sustainable. Business 101.
You seem somewhat lost bro... reality is the answer.
Thats what i ment. They have not begun to really sell yet. What if they do it soon? Then we can see if its a flop or not. I would also wanna see what happens. Lets pretend they open up three more servers and sell 40K more accounts. And then three months later does the same thing again, then again. The game is still new. Aventurine dont do anything as a normal smart company would do something. So its hard to predict (for me) what thier next move will be. With Mythic or Blizzard we would know exactly what would happend.

Still holding on to the hope that there will ever be more then 1 server for this game?
After almost 2 months since this game "launched" I think its pretty obvious the population for this game already peaked during the first month.
The only reason they even managed to get thousands of people to buy the game in the first place was because they offered pre orders with NDA up until the last minute.
I think Aventurine will be lucky to maintain 10,000 long term subscribers if that, and they obviously will never need more then one server with the number of people currently playing.
Remember before they start spending what little money they have on new servers and launching the game in the US or advertisement or anything else that will help increase the number of new people playing they have to start paying of 6-9 years of development dept and continue to pay their maintenance costs.
Not to mention continue working on addressing the numerous issues the majority of their existing customers are curently complaining about on their official forums.

Asheron's call already payed for its development cycle long ago so having 9k players is still a profit.
darkfall is in debt of 10 mil + so 9k -15k players is not profitable.
But, it's fun to troll forums for a game you don't play. Way to be cool!
LOL...
I did play Darkfall... learn to read the whole thread instead of just popping in to troll!
Secondly, as someone already mentioned, that Ashron's Call didn't START with 9k players! I would think that close to a 500,000 people have played that game over it's life cycle. The money is in the bank!
The point is, everything about Darkfall is a lie. That is why I cancelled! The gameplay is nothing other than Countrike Knife fighting, with added BS. The sound, animation are sub-par. Sieges are a joke and it's nothng other than bring more than them. And more importantly as so many fans have already admitted... Tasos is a chronic lyer and Darkfall doesn't have any more large scale battles than DAOC had 4-5 years ago.
Fliud huge battles..? Nope! Anyone else (Fanboi) want to make another historical claim about Darkfall. I'm not trying to "hate" on the game, it was fun while it lasted. I just came here to pass on some news and got stuck in all these lies from you professional trolls.
Darkfall hasing NOTHING to hang it's hat on, let alone a thriving fan base or even enough player to keep the game afloat. Simple mathmatics people!
Clearly I am not a real Darkfall player because I have good performance. But hey, at least I don't sit on the official forums for games I hate hoping to find something to post about on the MMORPG.com forums. I think after reading this post I will cancel my account and have my entire guild cancel as well. Some random guy on the MMORPG.com forums who doesn't have the game told me it doesn't run well.
No, you're a special breed. The kind that think he's hot shit and deserves a cookie for his "unbiased" reviews. Give me a break, maybe you should spend more time watching your dragonball z cartoons.
So, don't talk down on anyone here because you aren't any more known than anyone else on the internet.

Someone is jeoulos! Why not write a review yourself then?
But i dont like the "if i dont like this type of gameplay it must be a flop" mentality.

I did read your thread. You said "an MMO cannot survive on 9k-15k People" And you are wrong. It doesn't matter what asheron's call had, it matters what they HAVE, as you said they cannot survice on 9k-15k people.
Also, AC didn't have 500k people, ever. The MMORPG charts show it with 120k tops. But you are missing the point.
You call us the "trolls" when all you've done since you entered is call anyone thinking that Darkfall had a future was a retard.. Yeah.. we're the trolls. Meanwhile, the OP (who hasn't and doesn't plan on playing DF) is complaining about the huge battles that don't happen.
Now, according to these forums, that's trolling. Bashing a game on the forums of that game you don't play or plan on playing, is trolling.

That site you are referring to is highly flawed.
It's numbers were bogus even when it was updated more than once every 6 months. The only numbers that were ever any good were those that were released via public media outlets, any other numbers were always complete works of fiction.
I'm not sure if it ever went as high as 500k either... but suffice it to say that during it's day AC went head to head with EQ and held it's own for quite awhile. There are very few "old-timers" in the MMO genre that did not play AC. It is usually called out as an MMO that was different from the same mechanics of EQ and eventually WoW.
As to how many are playing it currently? Again... I'm pretty sure any number we would throw around would be a guess, as it is against Turbine's policy to release any subscription numbers. Seeing as Turbine is a privately held company, they are under no obligations to release any financial statements unlike other companies like Blizzard, Funcom, EA, etc.
Have AV open up the game to the paying public and you will see alot of reviews.
Its not open to the public?? thats news to me.
I thought I was part of the public.
I am also part of the public, and the game is not offered to me. I can't buy it, no one can buy it at the moment. They sold a handful of copies since release, so they aren't open for public.
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.
Now, I'm fine in battles with a few hundred players. But as SOON as it gets too many (over 300-400) my FPS drops like crazy. Every Darkfall players knows, that the cause of this is CPU power. Todays computers just don't have the processing power for that kind of stuff on one core (Darkfall doesn't support dual core, if it did there'd probably be no problems). In battles with a few hundred, on high settings with shadows off (I turn these off for large battles), I have an FPS in the 40's. Below 30 becomes a hinderence, and 20 and below effects your gameplay a shitload.
Some players have been complaining about lowered performance during massive battles. Now, let’s put things into perspective here: Small skirmishes in Darkfall are what other games call “massive battles”. We recently had approximately 2000 characters involved in battle in the same area. Battles with several hundred characters are the norm and run very smoothly. Of course you’ll get progressive frame rate drops when you’re working your way up to thousands of players in the same scene. We’re seeing a lot more characters in Darkfall battles than you see maximum units in RTS games. One of our first priorities is to continuously optimize this experience. Massive battles in Darkfall will get larger and run smoother and smoother. Now we don’t mind if people keep bitching at us about getting this even better, we’re never satisfied ourselves, so please keep that in mind.
Let me also point out, that the servers are fairly stable, HOWEVER, it's happened a couple of times now where there's been three seiges going on at once. Each one of them with over 500 players fighting in the same zone. This brings the servers down. It's happened twice now. And when the server's go down, the seige is ended, and the gold you paid to start the seige isn't refunded (It's the Darkfall policy, no refunds what-so-ever. Welcome to Darkfall). So yeah, this can be a real fucking pain in the ass, ofcourse.
But you've got to remember it's very early in the game. It's still in beta (It's not officially released, I don't care what anyone says), I'm sure they're considering changes.
Also remember in the MMORPG.com review with Tasos, he said they were optimizing the way seiges work, so that if the servers go down the seige isn't lost.
This is the truth from my perspective, yes I'm a Darkfall "fanboy". But I won't lie about how good or how bad a game is, no matter how much I love it. I'm quite happy to tell anyone what sucks huge dick about the game, and what's just completely amazing about it.

Actualy you can buy it right now if you want. I beleive the store is open.
just because it is not open all the time, does not mean it is not open to the public.

and if by a handful you mean thousands then yes.
How often do they open the store?
EDIT: I know it has been asnwered already, but where do I buy the bloody thing? I can't find any links on their website.
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.
go there create an account. buy the game from within you account. not to hard. the link was on the front page of the forum.
migth be closed though now because there are alot of people that still want accounts and they only have limited space on the server.
Heres something for you to think about. They havnt added any new servers or made some patch that allowed double the server capacity. Yet once in awhile they sell new spots on there server.
Jimmyman99: You cant buy it. You have to wait till enough people cancel there sub then AV will open sales up again.

You seem to be throwing all these numbers around about subscribers and magnitude of battles with ease and no evidence to back them up.
Let me add some evidence in the discussion:
spreadsheets.google.com/lv
More information on this thread:
forums.darkfallonline.com/showthread.php

I am also part of the public, and the game is not offered to me. I can't buy it, no one can buy it at the moment. They sold a handful of copies since release, so they aren't open for public.
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holodomor - pre-WW2 genocide.
Actually, at the moment, this statement is factually incorrect...
Well let me just say, that I have a good computer.
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.4GHZ
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT (1gig of graphical ram)
4gig of DDR2 G-Skill RAM.
Back a few months ago, it's get laggy with more than 200 or so. They're working on it better, there's actually a news post talking about Seige performance.

I can't find any links on their website.

www.darkfallonline.com/accounts/f/default.php
go there create an account. buy the game from within you account. not to hard. the link was on the front page of the forum.
migth be closed though now because there are alot of people that still want accounts and they only have limited space on the server.

Heres something for you to think about. They havnt added any new servers or made some patch that allowed double the server capacity. Yet once in awhile they sell new spots on there server.
