I've been looking around for new upcoming MMO's, and it seems that alot of people really think Aion will be the next big MMO.
I decided to research abit more about Aion and it's the first game I've seen in a long time to have good, smooth gameplay, like WoW. I'm not saying that WoW is the best MMO out at the moment, though it does have the most subsribers, but I think part of the reason it is so popular is the gameplay, movements, smoothness of combat, etc.
Aion looks very promising, but I also notice it is by the company, playNC, which has a number of different MMO's which have not been very successful (Tabula Rasa, Guildwars, City of Heroes/Villains). - EDIT: I did not realise some of these games were quite successful, sorry about that.
So, do YOU think Aion will be the next big MMO?
Comments
I want to think that, but look at all the other games people thought were going to be awesome.
Of course not. It's WoW-like, and "you can't out-WoW, WoW". So there you go.
I hate WoW because it made my plush hamster kill himself, created twin clones of Hitler, punched Superboy Prime in reality, stared my dog down, spoiled my grandmother, assimilated me into the Borg, then made me into a real boy, just to make me a woman again.
I'm sure it will be big, especially in Asia.
Nope, I'm tipping SW:TOR as the next big thing.
Aion is looking good, but TOR has the advantage of a killer IP and one of the best development houses in the business.
I'm not enamoured of NCSoft. Auto Assault and Tabula Rasa don't instill much confidence.
Playing: EVE, Final Fantasy 13, Uncharted 2, Need for Speed: Shift
Of course not. It's WoW-like, and "you can't out-WoW, WoW". So there you go.
It's WoW-like? Are you serious? Have you played the game?
I've just got done playing the Chinese open beta of Aion, and I can tell you right now it's nothing like WoW.
I am actually quite stunned at your comment, and cannot fathom on how/where you have postulated that idea.
Wait, WoW has people and Aion has people. Oh Gawd it's WoW-like...
No. I'd say that your typical WoW-player got no idea of, and find no interest in, what other MMORPGs are being made: they already got WoW, and they think it's perfect, why should they care? Aion may attract a lot of players but beating WoW - no. I'd also like to point out that Guild War and CoH/CoV are all successful, just not as successful as WoW.
This.
The better question is will Aion do well? Based off the feedback it's getting from the OB, I think it will do just fine.

Have not played it but for me the it still seems wow like. Please point out what they are doing different:)
I know what he is saying, and to a point I agree... but he's taking it to an extreme.
WoW is great, but hardly perfect, and everyone that plays it, knows that.
Then again it could just be sarcasm... really hard to tell.

Way to overreact... I would actually love you to prove me different - I haven't played it myself, and I don't hold much for WoW. But Aion seems a lot like it - solo-oriented quest-heavy content. That's the core of WoW.

Why is it everyone has to implicate every fantasy title as being Wow-like, why not EQ like or UO like, those games set the standard not Wow. All Wow is, is an improved EQ that SOE did not have the imagination or skill to produce.
If you have to ask the question how Aion is different from Wow you obviously have no inkling of what Aion is. Of course any fantasy title is going to have similarities with Wow, but Aion is quite different.
I sincerely doubt it will challenge Wow's numbers, but it will take suscribers away from the other games, that I am sure of.

WoW and Aion comparison
WoW does not have flight combat, nor do flight in WoW give you specific buffs.
Items can have their appearances altered
Aion does not have a battleground system
Aion also has a zone dedicated to PvP where constant keep take battles occur
Aion also has a split focus on grinding and questing but puts more emphasis on questing. This is the exact opposite in WoW
Aside from stunning there are also air shackles and combos outside of these moves
There is an interesting combo into chain. For instance lets say you have your hotbar and it's loaded up with 1-12 skills and skill 1 can combo into another skill. Upon pressing one it changes into that combo skill. This provides a cleaner bar.
Aion also has a rank system within the abyss (PvP zone) and upon being ranked 1 you recieve massive buffs and an altered appearance.
WoW has a cartoony look to it, not saying it's a bad thing, however, Aion is more a fantasy look. I don't know if you guys could see that or not.
You can also place stones into your items which gives them extra stats, however, upon failing there is some percent chance of weapon breakage.
Stigmas are a way for character variety. You can have a caster able to wear plate if he or she chooses to use up all their stigma slots. And you recieve five of these slots. And you can also have stigma give you certain skills.
And WoW has mining, gathering, and whichever other skills for harvesting. In Aion it's all under one skill gathering.
The music in Aion is amazing. It seems like they also dedicated time to it. As for WoW it is more on a simplier level.
WoW does not have a player shop either. They do have a broker which does exist in Aion, however if you want to set up a shop you can do this as well.
PvP also has keep takes, with seige weapons which are dropped from raid bosses.
This is some of the things I noticed and I only got to level 20. I'm sure there is more and the flight aspect of the game allows alot of possibilities.
If I was to compare it to any other game I'd say Lineage 2 without the grind. And DAoC because of the seiging and keep taking.
I still don't understand how you guys see it as WoW like. I am starting to think some of you might have perception issues. I don't know lol.
Of course not. It's WoW-like, and "you can't out-WoW, WoW". So there you go.

I wouldn't say I overreacted. I was just stunned. Hence why I said I was stunned o.O
And on the end note, your assumption are wrong =[

Thanks for the info. Never looked in the game before, but I'm interested now. Still won't dwindle WoW numbers, though, for obvious reasons.

Don't take that seriously
Goronian is a troll
No, Aion won't be the next big thing. It doesn't really do anything new. It's got a few gimmicks which make it interesting, but at its heart it's just another level-based quest grinder. It follows the same formula as a hundred other generic fantasy MMORPGs.

Really? I never knew. Tell me more!

I have played some in the Chinese beta, but I didn't get very far due to the 5hour limit, and the fact that I didn't want to spoil the game for when it comes out. The first few levels are quest based, although some people did seem to choose to grind.
It seemed like if you only killed the least number of mobs possible you didn't have enough to continue, and so some grinding as you moved was needed. But that didn't matter as killing mobs was very fun. However, when you get past level 10 that might all change. I prefur grouping myself so I am hoping you see more of that.
The poster who said that the game starts wow like is correct, in the way that, it starts out similar to any questing game. However, in wow you seem to look at mobs and they die, while in Aion I was using my chains for some kills, when they were up, and using different skill orders, when no skill chain was available. Also, I found that as a mage I had to do things differently for ariel mobs. In this sense the game seemed very unlike wow. This was at level 7ish, when you had a number of skills.
Yeah I think it will be but I won't be suprised if The Old Republic turns out to be the next big thing either. Though we still haven't heard what Blizzard's next-gen mmo will be. Aion will have even a more polished launch than most mmos, even Lotro.
The game is already very popular in Korea and China, obviously it's one of the biggest mmorpg of the last few years.
Yea, the first 1-18 levels are quest based. But after that it's more grinding. And I wouldn't say its starts WoW like simply because of the first few levels. That seems a little absurd, because then anything can be easily compared. I.E A boy is girl like because the first few weeks the fetus is 'genderless'... or vise versa
And please do not say boys are girl like, because of whatever. As for all the similarities there are just as many differences. Then we will have a philosophical debate on what noun-like means, and that sounds utterly boring.
just to clarify as well, you could level up faster, depending on class, with grinding the first 10 levels. It's really a choice between what you want to do, which is either quest or grind.
PlayNC with not so popular titles? Compare to WoW perhaps not as popular. But I am willing to bet Linage and Guildwars have seen higher population numbers than the majority of todays titles. Even City of Heroes had a spell of a decent population. So are they not successfull cause you didn't play em or do you have facts to prove this?
Fact: It cannot and will nto be as big as wow, due to the hardware required to play it. But realistically it will be one of the biggest. I would say and im currently playing it on the chinese servers that the gui is taken from WOW, but the gameplay is much closer to EQ, the original. It won game of the year in korea and the fastest growing game in china so it really does not matter if it is the number one game in America NCsoft is a KOREAN companie and it plays well to it market. But it is ignorant to say the game is like WOW if you have never played it.

I am glad to hear its more grinding based after that I really wanted this game to be more like ffonline, and linneage .
Actually your point agrees with mine, what I was trying to say that if you only looked at the first few levels, you could easily assume this game was wow like, but the further you get in the less it is, and as you say its more grindy later, then its completely not wow .
I do miss playing games like L2 and FF where I could find a group and heal my heart out
