Best avatar creator?

 Just out of curiosity, because I'm slightly obsessed with character creation, what MMOs would you all rank as having the most realistic looking, most diverse, most customizable avatar creation? My standard right now is set at EVE Online - I'm looking for comparable or better.

I appreciate your help!

    I love character creation in City of Heroes. I've made stereotypical spandex-covered steroid monsters, robots, bug-eyed aliens, high-tech suits of power armor, steampunk zombie cyborgs, anthropomorphic animals, demonic businessmen in three-piece suits, and Ronald McDonald.

    You don't get the level of piddly detail that you can in a system like Aion, but when you bound past someone with the speed of a super-leap, nobody can see that neat trick you did with the angle of your inner left eyebrow. And if they could, they wouldn't care. With enough creativity (sadly, something few MMO players have), you can come up with some unique and iconic character designs.

    Hands down it is Aion, nothing comes close to it. IMO

    Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...

    Aion's is mind-blowingly good.  It doesn't have quite as much sheer variety of choices as City of Heroes, say, but the characters you can make are absolutely beautiful.  And not just one or two possible nice-looking characters, but many, many possibilities, all of which are gorgeous.  When you walk around in game, you see so many really different-looking characters, different in lots of ways, and they're all awesome-looking.

    People say that CoH has a "better" character generation system, but I'd rather be able to make "only" 100,000 different characters that look AMAZING than be able to make 1,000,000 different characters that look mediocre to fugly.

    Aion is great, AoC and EQ2 also have nice creators.  A lot of sliders and styles to chose from.

    Vanguard have it too but the choice of 3 hairstyles kinda stops it to be nominated from me (one of the hairstyles are "bald").

    Wow have one of the worst ones, not as bad as when I played Linage a long time ago but still very limited.

    Well, until I can get my hands on Aion's character creator, I'd actually argue Everquest 2. I was amazed by it honestly. Another honorable mention would also be Perfect World, not as in depth, but you can change quite a bit of the character.

    personally, CoH/V's creator will, for the most part, make some fugly little monstration. Its rather basic, with the most customization coming from the costumes, but if you've seen one blue beetle/super man lookalike, you've seen em all.

    City of Heroes takes the prize in my book. NOt many MMos comes close to this one. Pics and vides of Champions online looks to be just as good. People just stay in character generation for an hour just getting their toon right. Thats impressive

    Second Life.

    Without any doubt this game has the best av creations imaginable. The devs are terrible but you need to give them credit for this part. No game comes close, none. Not only this but once inside you can buy or make skins that look  so close to real its mind blowing. Aion dosen't come remotely close with its sliders, SL has it too and lots more.

    Go check inside game then check the stores that sell skin.

    CoH has the same faces for everyone. They have different ones but everyone has a chance to get the same one you do so it doesnt make it a good char creator.

    Well, yeah, hands down. Considering you can not only change every aspect of your avatars shape, you can skin your avatar with textures of your own design. Nothing comes close to that.

    I've seen some avatars that were just stunning  in SL.

    I havent seen Aion. I thought for its time SWG was great, and also Perfect World.

    I'd say SIMS 2, but that wasnt a MMO. ;)

    The Social MMO My Avatar City will have a very advanced Avatar creation process for the visual creation and showing of your own personal emotions while in the virtual world. Your Avatar's face can be made using FaceGen allowing you to create the face using photos of your self. Clothes and Attachments can be added out side of the game and then your Avatar Imported into the game once you have finished designing your avatar.

    Global avatar architecture

    The avatar is the singlemost important element of the virtual reality experience. It is the user's communications channel and user interface to the new world but, more importantly, it is the projection of the user's personality. In virtual reality, personality is always a matter of choice, since all rules are artificial and can be changed.

    Because of the great importance of the avatars, users invest great amounts of time and effort, perhaps even money, into them. It is not all about looks and emotional attachment; the avatar will also become an extremely useful tool for communications. To enable such multi-purpose usability, the underlying technology must be sufficiently sophisticated.

    The number one requirement for the avatar to function in a network of interconnected virtual worlds is to have the ability to travel from one place to another. In realXtend architecture, the avatar storage is a separate entity that is mainly used to store the avatar and its assets in a specific place, so that it is not directly dependent on any single world server. The world server and clients connected to it will fetch the necessary data directly from the avatar storage, reducing the world server's load and making seamless transitions between different worlds as simple as browsing the Internet.

    There are still some challenges ahead for the developers. For example controlling intellectual property rights for users who create content, such as, clothes and accessories for avatars, or other objects and scripts. The challenges are not trivial, but the truly important questions are always the most interesting ones and the answers to them most valuable.

    Roadmapped features:

    * Direct3D rendering for better performance

    * Support for OGG Vorbis

    * Support for video (other than quicktime)

    * Avatar generator and attachment tool integration to rexViewer

    * OGRE materials support

    * Improvements to in-world building tools

    * Weather support

    * Integration with skype/google spreadsheets/openoffice

    * Avatar face/head animation based on live video camera data

    * Lip synch for VOIP

    * Clothing physics

    * Vehicles support

    You know, as many people as have said CoH in this post, when I downloaded it and tried the character creation, I was very unimpressed.  Maybe I was doin' it wrong, LOL. Maybe if I run out of options, I'll download it again and try a little harder.

    I'll also agree with this one.  I've been on SL for over two years now, and I'm not gonna lie - my SL avs are pretty awesome.  *grin*  But what I'm lacking is money to buy Linden, ergo, I can't do too much new customization. XD

    released is by far age of conan. I haven't played/head of another mmo where you can customise your body, not just scale/height.

    All points bulletin looks like its pretty much the most advanced thing in any game...

    Has to go to Star Wars Galaxies.

    Came out in 2003 allowing you to change everything about your character with sliders including height, weight, build etc etc. Then once you got into the game there was an image design profession which allowed you to change your appearance with more options.

    Way ahead of it's time and hasn't really been out done yet.

    90% of the time played on my CoH/CoV trial account I spent making characters. One of the reasons why I never even considered buying it afterwards was because I realized I'd spend most of my time just sitting and making characters... So far that's the best one I've seen.

    My favorite is Chronicles of Spellborn. The extra left/right customization plus the fact that I can retain my outfit regardless of the gear I find in game is a big plus for me.

    In Aion you can also customize your body and it has much more variety/possibilities.

    I would say SWG and then COH, but Aion seems to blow them out of the water when I actually get to play it.

    Yeah...hehe...think I spent more time making different types of characters than I did actually playing the game.  CoH/CoV was definitely the most creative and fun one I've come across.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

    fair enough. but aion isn't out yet and apb will beat it. theres probably not a "less girly/anime" slider in aion which makes me a sad panda.

    I would have to agree with this as well. Out of all of the released (Aion isn't released yet in NA so in my book it doesn't count) games this one allowed for the most fine tuning of every aspect of your character's look. I've played many games including CoH and PW that have great character generators but they were pale compared to SWG. Aion may be great too but that remains to be seen as far as I'm concerned. When they actually release the game in NA/EU I'll find out for myself. Until then SWG wins hands down.

    Well, it is out in Asia...

    Can you tell me if this is "less girly/anime" enough?
