The best mmo where you can play as a necro

there is a lot of mmorpgs out there that i have come across over the years where in the mmos themselfs  you can play as a necromancer.

everquest , everquest online adventures, vanguard, everquest 2, dark age of camelot , city of villians ,  guild wars,

age of conan i think --- i never played that one.

but whats your take on the best mmorpg to play as a necromancer ? in terms of what would be considered of what a person would want from a mmo while playing such a class you have to put a rating on the catagories of what would make that mmo stand out amongst the rest in terms of fun factor ,and all round play.

surviveabilty , pet/s , gear , quest, pvp, feel, overpowered ,

in my opinion the best mmo to have the necromancer as a playable class is everquest 2. allthough i do hope that will change over the years if they ever make an exspansion to warhammer online and introduce the vampire counts and that one of the classes from the army would be itself a necromancer.

if for the poll you choose other please tell what mmo you refered to.

sorry for the miss type on the poll question.

neco was spose to be necro

Playing necromancer in the original Everquest was a blast... You have poison and disease bolt, life taps, life siphon and your spectre pet that is oh so awesone.

WoW Warlocks are not exactly necromancers their powers directly deals with subjugating/negotiating with demons than the undead but Blizzard ripped off quite a few skills from the necromancer's spell book such as life taps and life siphons (The developers of WoW were huge EQ1 fans).

Life stealing has always been a part of the Necromancer lore.

My goodness you Everquest fans think WoW ripped off everything from EQ..

To be honest the difference between the Necromancer class in the games I've played have been to big to really all categorize them as one. In GW for example it's just a hex pressure, anti-m

Guild Wars Necro all the way.

    Truly an army of one.

Everquest had the best necros of any game hands down

I'm a great fan of all kind of these necro-like casters such as the WoW-warlock, eq2-necro and AoC-necro. For many years I played 2 warlocks in WoW, 1 necro in both EQ2 and GW as my mains.

While the wow-warlock at that time was pure domination and i liked him because of the action (which also has alot to do with the combat in wow in general), i absolutely LOVED my necro in Eq2 for many reasons.

I spent hours crafting new spells and adepts to get new pets -which are all unmatched in terms of their combat, diversity and overall appearance in my opinion. http://www.allakhazam.com/wiki/Necromancer_Pets_(EQ2) The only thing i was missing on my EQ2-necro was instant dots. I didnt really liked this stop'n'go casting and would have liked to throw some dots while moving. But again, this is more due to the generall combat-mechanics of the whole game and not class-related.

However, after many years of playing necros almost exclusively, i could probably write a book about their specific pros and cons. I leave it with an agreement to the OP, saying the EQ2-necro "look and feel" is the best among them :)

im sorry . you must be a little confused.

i was asking for peoples input on necromancers,

    not warlocks.

games that would have warlocks are, daoc, eq2 ,wow  as far as i know of.

care to mention what game is the best for playing as a necromancer ?

  • someforumguysomeforumguy Member RarePosts: 4,088

Definately Guild Wars Necro. Most versatile necro of all games listed. Minion master, curses necro , lifestealing necro it has it all and any combination that you care to make up. And they can look ugly in a necro way too if you want

    Necromancer EQ1...best ever...

MMOs Played: I can no longer list them all in the 500 character limit.

  • MeltdownMeltdown Member UncommonPosts: 1,183

Warlocks are CLOSE to being a "necromancer". Only the affliction line really resembles what I would expect out of a necromancer. DKs... please, now you are just trolling.

I've played Warlocks in WoW and Necros in EQ, I would have to say the FEEL of the necromancer was much more... necromancery? with the EQ version. Of course I don't have a large sample set to compare against...

    Pet classes ftw!!!!

It is odd that you dont know about how Minion masters once ruled in GW Every type of necro has had its time in GW's GvG. No matter if it was bloodspike, hexpressure, minionmasters.

In PVE there are loads of viable combinations (not just the lame PVX builds:/ )

Guild Wars has the best classic Necromancers, practicioners in the art of the dead.  Life sacrifice for some spells, Dark curses, the ability to raise undead minions...everything about them has the feel of the dead.  You can even get scar patterns for armor, or armor with faces out of a Clive Barker movie(for that matter, their minions fit such a movie).

Besides, the makers worked on the Diablo series.  I think they know what a necro is all about.

Warlocks in WoW are dumbed down EQ1 necromancers, who use demons as pets instead of the undead.

Necros had basically everything a warlock has, except they had it years earlier. But necros also had much more. They had more variety in their spells. They had more DoTs, with different damage types and durations. They had more nukes, with different damage types, cast times, etc. They had more utility, in the forms of buffs and debuffs. They had infinitely, INFINITELY better hp and mp mechanics (warlocks lifetap or suck up their pet's mana, and can drain relatively minor amounts of life. necros could constantly drain their hp into mana, cast lifedrain DoTs, lifedrain nukes, drain their hp to their pet, drain their hp to their group mates, drain their mana to their group mates, drain other NPCs HPs into mana for their groupmates, sacrifice friendly people (funfunfun!), etc.)

    Necromancer > warlock.

I'm interested in some input about the necromancer in Vanguard. I tried one ages ago for a few levels but left the game again soon after because of it's many problems. At that time there was an option to upgrade the minion with body parts..don't know of it is still in the game.

     Edit:

@fischsemmel: all the abilites you mention remind me of a great time with lots of fun with my EQ2-necro. The ability to rezz people was also very welcome...although it's a bit spooky to be rezzed by a necromancer instead of a priest or druid ;)

The everquest necro is my favorite. The eq2, vanguard were good too. I might give the vanguard one another shot at some point though for more in depth play. I never liked the daoc one at all, but my favorite class from all time is there and that is spiritmaster which has lifetaps and summoned spirit pets, heh.

You can't compare warlock in wow at all because it is not just another name, but a different class altogether. It deals with demons.

I can see why people make the comparison though because that is the closest wow has to a warlock, but they have always had less variety than EQ. As far as the DK, well it is more like a shadowknight, heh.

  • fischsemmelfischsemmel Member UncommonPosts: 364

Lol. Getting rezzed by a necro wasn't as spooky as when they sacrificed you to create the reagent they needed in order to cast their rez!

    But seriously. EQ necros.

Short duration, high DPS  poison DoTs.

Long duration, low  DPS disease DoTs.

    Lifetap DoTs.

Long duration, high DPS fire DoTs.

Poison, magic, and disease nukes, of varying cast times and damage.

Multiple types of fears, roots, charms (for undead only).

Virtually unlimited ways to transfer hp to mana, from enemies to necro, from necro to pet, from necro to allies, etc.

Cackling skeleton pets who could be tanks, rogues, casters.

Utility (FEIGN DEATH, corpse summons, rez, resist buffs, see invis, etc.)

Oh, come on. Saying that warlocks are a "different class altogether" just because they summon demons (who help the lock out by tanking, doing extra damage, or maybe a bit of utility) instead of undead (who helped the necro out by tanking, doing extra damage, or maybe a bit of utility).

    They're the same freaking class.

LOL. That is like saying in fantasy, oh demonlogist, necromancer, same thing.

Hell, in daoc, the spiritmaster was more of a necro than wow's warlock, and they already had a freaking necro class.

The mage class in EQ summoned elementals to tank and do dps, they should be a necro then too, oh wait, they're called a mage, so they're the same as in WoW. Don't be absurd. The warlock and necro share only a little. Like someone said earlier, it is a dumbed down necro. I still stand by the demons and undead thing.

All casters share something. Besides, in warcraft lore, there are necromancers and warlocks, so there is a difference.
