So far I've really been impressed with Turbine. The game is solid and I feel like the progression is really nice. I'm in my mid 30's now with my toons and have yet to run out of quests. In fact , I usually have to delete a few to make room for more because I out-level them. And that's not including group quests, of which I do very few. So I don't know how the above poster ran out of quests unless he just stopped looking.
Interesting that no one is up in arms over the announcement of Henchmen.
Maybe because there was no such announcement?
And I think its wierd that people think raising the leveling cap is lazy... Level 50-60 is probably the most impresive and ambitiouse part of LotrO and any other MMO Ive played. And it even more wierd that people think that its bad for casual players, the more "hardcore" players (using the term loosely since there are no hardcore players in LotrO) would be happy stay at 60 just getting new instances and raids to get gear from. So the level cap gets raised for the casual players.
"The last thing that's really cool about it," Steefel continued, "is that you're going to be able to train customizable soldiers that you can bring with your party into that space and actually control."
It's in the book 8 announcement. While I think its a lame idea, it was announced.

I believe it's just for the instance. Not a big deal.

One of the last parts they talked about was the henchmen which to me is another good idea though as stated people will eventually be up in arms about it I like the prospect of being able to use henchmen to perform certain tasks.
Technology people has always been about being able to do more not less so though we will have a million people who swear that "this is making grouping pointless" I hardly see it that way as it is helping us find better ways to achieve things in game.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

He isnt talking about henchmen (like thoose in GW and DDO), he is talking about theese new Skirmish instances where there are NPCs that you can have more control over. So its pretty much the next step from the Battle for Lorien instance where you can choose what kind of NPCs you want to have. Sounds more like they are working on creating larger scale battles without them being raids and sounds like a really cool and inovative feature.
If WoW = The Beatles and WAR = Led Zeppelin Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
Another level cap increase? Level cap increases are the opiate of the MMO masses and the bane of casual players. Maybe some day an MMO will figure out how to keep the endgame fun long-term, without endlessly raising the level cap! ...prolonging the Everlasting Lowbie Syndrome for those of us who don't want another job or who enjoy alts a lot. ...and further spreading out the relative levels of potential groupmates making grouping with friends less likely.
Sorry but I agree with the Level cap increase's since it keeps people and also brings people back
The level cap thing is not really that important. We've painted ourselves into a corner with saying that LotRO is all about the journey, not what happens when you get to endgame. And voila... more levels in the near future. We shouldn't be surprised at all by this.
The henchies thing is annoying. I bet you they will be so full of bugs that it will be almost impossible to use them. I say this because of how buggy the pet AI is in LotRO. They need to do some serious fixing of some issues with pets before they implement a henchman system.
Back in EvE. Started with BatMUD. Main MMOs have been EvE and DAoC.
Great game. Too bad of the lack of PVP in the open world. I really missed that when I played it. If they would add fully playable evil races and world-pvp servers, I would be back within a heartbeat. That will probably never happen, sadly.
because not every game has to be like your stupid WoW.
No, little Frodo, maybe your 'stupid wow', not mine.
I've been playing LOTRO since open beta and also participated in MoM's beta. I'm the founder and leader of a Kinship and have supported the Turbine LOTRO team in all of the contests, in discussions all over the web, and in the LOTRO forums. But I am sadly losing faith in them ever since MoM's release.
The direction Turbine has taken in changing (and dumbing-down) the game to accomodate the anticipated Asian community, and their total disregard for major fluff features such as housing (absolutely worthless as is) and hobbies leaving a HUGE void in immersion into Middle Earth itself, as well as the about-face and total silence on promised revamps after the realease of MoM to such things as the UI and region fill-ins where there are large gaps in the map, is sending the game down the path of mediocrity.
Book 8 appears to be continuing along this path and I, for one, am about ready to move on, which really saddens me. LOTRO has so much potential, has some really great features, has a hard-working and talented dev team, great graphics and storyline, and attention to detail that is unparalleled in MMOs. Steefel is ruining the game. He has stopped listening to his loyal customers and has only one thing in his focus... bring in as many players as possible and to hell with everything else.
I enjoy LOTRO, and plan on sticking with it for a while at least. But this is the *last* MMO I will play that uses a level-based system, the Tank/Healer/DPS dynamic, gear progression, reputation grinds, crafting grinds, instances with 'trash' and 'bosses', level-based aggro mechanics (including immersion breaking 'grey' mobs), vendors who sell worthless items, boars and other pointless mobs, filler quests, fed-ex quests, etc. I find LOTRO enjoyable (mostly) in spite of these qualities, but when someone releases a quality, polished title that moves beyond these clichés I will gladly sign up and move on.

Posts like these make me wonder if it is actually the particular game that these type of players are sick of maybe you are just sick of video games in general as these are generally staples of not just mmo's but all video games ever made.First problem I have with posts like this is ultimately you are playing in a pixelated world, everything you do in any video game generally describes exactly what you've listed as what you are sick of about mmos.
Biggest point though is no one seems to have any idea what they want if not all of these things.

What can I say.. I'm a fan. Like it or hate it, it's one of the better MMOs out there.
Raising the level cap.. are you surprised? An MMO with a level cap is more likely than not going to raise the level cap. Face it, more people than not, like the idea of leveling up. And why not level up as you explore new content. Just exploring new content and not leveling up... while it sounds fine to me... it wont keep a lot of players around for long. Plus if you don't have to do quests then people can rush through the content much faster ala guild wars. So while I agree that it would be nice to have an MMO without levels, this one does, so it's only natural. Whew.
I am glad they are doing well. Have been around this offering since early beta. However the content needs not to be one area that has 20 quests of get these 12 leaves for tea. Get these 15 - 20 pick axes (same location), then blow the horn summon the master there slay the master ( who always happen to be an elete)
What i would prefer is added content to areas they already have. For those that hate moria , Maybe do some work on the hidden city before moria. Add 20 new quests to that area to give a choice where to level for those 53 +.
Also while they are at it, can they work on the path finding bugs the pets have while in moria?
My other gripes would be the super high repair costs almost 1 gold is very high.
No i did not rush through material . Only recently made 50 now 53. Not in any hurry.

What exactly do I expect?! Either you aren't very experienced with MMOs or you just weren't sure what to say but felt you had to say something to defend LOTRO.
The housing is nothing more than a glorified walkin storage locker as you yourself pointed out. That is ALL the housing is good for. There is no customization, the hook system is atrocious, the dev team keeps adding items to use in houses that have no room for anything else and thus take up that precious storage, many of those house decorations are bind-on-acquire so they can't even be stored in the house. Should I go on? There are many examples of games with housing that puts the housing in LOTRO to shame.
But as I said, Steefel has his sights set on changing this game to fit the Asian community so housing and any other fluff as well as revisiting the gaps in the beginning regions or bringing the UI into the present has been completely abandoned. Instead we see experience per level being lowered, level cap being raised again within months of the last cap raise, quest objectives being shown on the mini-map so that, god forbid, you don't have to actually use your brain to figure it out, starter areas being revamped so that a player can zip through it and head for that cap as fast as possible...
Aye, LoTRO is one of the better MMOs out atm. I too enjoy it. However, I also see people's frustration with the same-old hashed out MMO setup again and again. While yes, the whole lvl / gear / etc. grind has become the staple for MMOs, it is not the only option available; just the easiest to make. Games such as Guild Wars / Second Life / Eve, are more about customizing your character than level progression. I'm sure there are other titles that fit into this category that I'm not thinking of at the moment. While no, they aren't for everybody, I do think they are largely underrepresented in the MMO genre. LotRO does try and achieve some kind of medium between the 2 game setups, but I do have to admit that it gets very grindy before too long inspite of this.
I too hope MMOs will find ways soon to break out of the repetative setup they have adopted. They have potential to be much much more.

Im a founder and beta tester aswell and have stuck with LotrO ever since... And you know what? I think LotrO have never been better! Sure there are some major flaws in the game (such as missing raid content, and crafting not being good enough) and there are some features that I could live without. (such as quest helper) and there are stuff that needs more work like the housing. But they cant make everyone happy all the time but Turbine have been adding alot to the game and that we will get iconic places like Mirkwood and Dol guldur in free updates with a new kind of instances sounds great to me. When people whine about Moria I dont think they remember what the game was like before the expansion. Pretty much every part of SoA have been revamped since launch and that for a good reason.
Seems like you are just really upset about them adding a quest helper (that alot of people ahave been asking for) and blaming it on Asian release or WoW or whatver crap people always blame when devs are adding something new.. To me it seems you are the one with little experience with MMOs and otheer companies in the industry. Turn of the quest helper if you dont like it and be happy that more people will play LotrO because of this feature which meens Turbine gets more money and can make more content
If WoW = The Beatles and WAR = Led Zeppelin Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
Meh. There's been very little "free" content since Moria came out.
And frankly, the problem with the game as is, there's too many levels, not enough content. The game has 60 levels and about 2400 quests (the lorebook lists more, but some are things just for horses, flags for leveling up, etc). WoW as 70 levels and about 7500 quests.
Even that wouldn't be so bad, if probably half the quests weren't either for 1-15 and 50-60. The rest of the game is just barren.
The keep having these welcome back weekends with xp bonuses to try to get people pass the barren spots (as well as their tweaking of the advancement rate in Book 7), but those aren't real fixes, they need to add more quests. A lot more.
I am still trying to figure out what game you are playing, because its not LOTRO. It is imposable to do all quests in any zone before they go Grey. The game is jam packed with quests, so much so there are quests and deeds to INCREASE how many quests you can have in your qest log.
The just added over 50 quests in the last content reworking. That's 50 more in the elf and dwarf starting area alone.
I'm not trying to harp on you, but how is it you can be constantly wrong about this game?

No. I don't even have a character to level 60 yet. The thought of another level cap raise fills me with dread. (no pun intended.) Raising the level cap is a lazy way to "add more content" and keeps people on the treadmill instead of finding creative ways to keep them interested in your game.
Oh, you mean like:

"On the "free addition" front, Turbine is targeting June for the release of Book 8, the next part of the epic storyline. Book 8 will add new instances, new locations, and new bosses based on a return to Moria.
Later plans include new skirmishes to show that the escalating war of the Ring. Previously secure areas like Buckland and Weathertop will have instance-based battles aimed at players of multiple levels. "Skirmishes are a way for the players to become more front and center," Steefel explains. "In a war, you need people to lead, so there's a layer of customizable soldiers you can utilize."

You serious?
How about Asheron's Call one and two, DnD online with its unique combat system, and LOTRO with tons of innovations and evolutions such as the music system, AC2 that is the basis for both DnD and LOTRO engine, and many many modern concepts for MMO's.

Good GAWD. First off Papadam, I have been playing MMOs since 1999 with EQ beta and have been playing games online since 1989 in the days of BBS' and MUDs. I've played many games that included awesome housing like EQ2 and UO (and I understand that SWG has great housing as well), and the list of classics that I've played include AO, DAoC, AC, AC2, Tribes, and Second Life just to name a few. And you can add quite a few betas as well including both LOTRO's SoA beta & MoM's beta, EQ, EQ2, and closed beta for a major MMO currently which I cannot name due to the NDA. What are your credentials?
Secondly, how did you get from my posts that I was whining about Moria? As I just stated, I beta tested MoM and absolutely love the expansion, which is by far the single best expansion for an MMO ever released IMO. It is the direction Steefel and Turbine has taken SINCE the release that has me up-in-arms. If you had bothered to read my posts with some comprehension, you would have seen that quite clearly. And where in either of my posts on this subject (or any of my posts any where for that matter since I do not put down a game that I have not played) did I ever mention WoW?
Thirdly, how in God's name did you get "Seems like you are just really upset about them adding a quest helper " out of my posts? Again, your reading comprehension seems to be lacking. Of everything I'm upset about, the quest helper is probably the lowest on the list, if it is even on the list. But it does serve to illustrate the dumbing-down of the game. Three major issues that faced Steefel when the decision was made to open LOTRO to the Asian market was the fact that the players in that market...
Do not like quests and features that require a lot of thinking to complete and/or that are time consuming. They prefer precise directions that leave no doubt as to where you need to go or do to complete the quest, thus the revamp of the Elf and Dwarf starter areas, the quest tracker, the faster timers on resource nodes, etc., etc.
Do not want nor appreciate world immersion features. The players in the Asian market play with one main goal - to level as fast as possible in order to get to the endgame and its subsequent loot/rewards/gear, thus the lowered experience needed for each level, MOBs have been adjusted down to make them easier to handle, the timers fit in here again, the just announced level cap increase barely six months after the last increase, the henchmen which will presumably alliviate the wait to complete instances if a player cannot find the needed players, and the Turbine stance that fluff is non-essential and therefore only warrants an occasional, at best, bone thrown to the players (the Yulefest was a prime example of the haphazard attitude and attention given to fluff), etc.
Prefer PvP play over PvE, thus all of the emphasis over the past few months on the PvMP aspect of LOTRO.
Lastly Papadam, how do you figure that "Pretty much every part of SoA have been revamped since launch"? The two starter areas have been revamped, a few areas have been added (besides those of the expansion of course), some quests have been added/fixed, and a few instances have either been added or adjusted. That hardly qualifies as "Pretty much every part of SoA have been revamped since launch."
Removed: Hyperboble, bullshit, and crackpot theories

I think its you that needs to wake up. I don't even think you play the game, your just spouting out about your theory.
The only thing they have done for the move to the Asian market is translation. That's it. All the "Revamping" as anyone who players the game will tell you, is just a smoothing out of content such as the back and forth in the lower zones, reordering the "Flow" of quests, and hubs. Its been a breath of fresh air in contrast to what it was.
Your number 3 is a joke. It has to be. The only thing they have done to PvMP lately is fix what moria broke.
Basically, i am telling you you need to take off the tinfoil, and stop expounding your proof less theories as facts.Nothing in the game has been dumbed down, unless your idea of dummed down is: Removed tedium, needless time wasting, and unfun.

If WoW = The Beatles
and WAR = Led Zeppelin
Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

Main MMOs have been EvE and DAoC.
because not every game has to be like your stupid WoW.
No, little Frodo, maybe your 'stupid wow', not mine.
My brand new bloggity blog.
Looking forward to it,was the firsts mmo i started with after not playing games in more then 2 years, and i have to say i was impressed buy it .
Lotro is worth every penny :P

Hmmm...todays newspaper...or this...NFL draft.......damn so much to read so little time.
It's better to lurk in forums and be thought a fool...than to endlessly "Quote" and remove all doubts.

Biggest point though is no one seems to have any idea what they want if not all of these things.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
As is housing has saved me well over 10g from not having to fill all of my characters bank slots hardly worthless to me.There are a few things they can do to housing but what exactly do you expect?
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

If WoW = The Beatles
and WAR = Led Zeppelin
Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
This game needs world PvP
I am still trying to figure out what game you are playing, because its not LOTRO. It is imposable to do all quests in any zone before they go Grey. The game is jam packed with quests, so much so there are quests and deeds to INCREASE how many quests you can have in your qest log.
The just added over 50 quests in the last content reworking. That's 50 more in the elf and dwarf starting area alone.
I'm not trying to harp on you, but how is it you can be constantly wrong about this game?
Oh, you mean like:
...........

Geesh people. Wake up.
~ Adder ~
Quick, Silent, Deadly
