Which Graphics do you prefer?

First of all, this post is NOT about game mechanics. It is NOT to flame EQ2 or WOW.  It is purely a discussion of opinions on character graphics and customization - which graphics do you prefer and why? And what do you think needs to be improved upon.

To me, WoW has more detail.

EQ2 looks like clay... doesn't look real... neither look real, but I have to say WoW... more detail

Everquest 2 has Dark Elves, along with High Elves and Half-Elves.

World of Warcraft has Blood Elves(used to be High Elves I beleive) and Night Elves (which you have a picture are). Night Elves aren't the same as Dark Elves since Night Elves are a good race while Dark Elves are usually a evil race.

Again, not really fair comparissions. Isn't the EQ2 image you put up not an ingame shot(but something from the character creation section just put together?) while the WoW is but without the interface showing(if its even that)?

While I prefer the static character images of EQ2 better, I'm not sure how distinctive they will look once they are wearing armor (helms in particular) and moving. A Human and an Elf warrior may look pretty similar, while in WoW they remained pretty distinct.

Not much use in exquisite customization if everyone looks the same when equipped/fighting.

That said - I love the glowing eyes the Night Elves have in WoW. If SOE was smart - they'd "borrow" the effect.

*Look of utter horror!!!* OMG...you're right - night/dark...how could I have been so confused?? And...the Wow 'night elves' indeed look so angelic and good, a thousand pardons for misconstruing them to the public as evil "dark elves."

C'mon now...if you played the stress test beta for Wow - you know very well that the WoW screen shot is exactly what they look like on both creation and in-game. Perhaps EQ2 graphics are slightly less in game, I am not in EQ2 beta- perhaps a beta player can enlighten us.

I agree with Djin... I also like the WoW better...I don't know what it is image but when I look at both I get pulled to the WoW one more. It does have better detail and looks more real than EQ2. It looks like the image from EQ2 has no difference in the face between the male and female except that he has a beard. I dunno if I figure out what pulls me toward the WoW I will let you know

"Suddenly I heard a Tapping..as of someone gently Rapping..Rapping at my Chamber door". You heard me Rapping right?

I agree that the two screenshots aren't even comparable since one shows rags and the other shows decent armor after in-game progress. Even then, I can tell I'd like EQ2's graphics better. Forgive me, beaten horse, but the cartoony graphics screw with my immersion...

EDIT: Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed WoW Stress, but it's going to be a flash in the pan compared to EQ2--like a Saturday morning cartoon, there's a reason it's only a half hour long.

    LOL!!! ::::36::

Dude I played Stress. The game is a cartoon, we all know it. All it took was walking around and looking at the buildings and characters. Some like that, some don't. I don't.

Gameplay was fun, I've already admitted that. But it's going to be short-lived for me. I've played enough games to know early when this will be the case. Admittedly I am working on faith with EQ2, because I haven't played it. But I know people who have played it whose opinions I trust, so that's why my chips are with EQ2.

As Djin pointed out - it wasn't a race vs. race comparison: just a which flavor of graphics do you prefer.

Below is an in-game image - they look the same to me.

The EQ2 shot looks laughably embarrassing, like it was designed by someone who hates their job. Dull, unenticing, characterless.

The WoW shot is the complete polar opposite.

Yep, I'll admit that Dryad looks a bit weird. Like Woodland Barbie or something.

You ever notice 95% of the screen shots are dark?!  Aren't there anything with the world?

That one's pretty neat looking, I do admit.

I personally find both styles very artistic.

WoW has a more 'Marvel comics feel" to it...like X-men in Fantasia (comics can be art!)..lol...l and the world design is perfectly suited to the character design as well. The flaw I see in WoW graphics is only in the customization of the playable characters.  I think everyone prefers to have a unique character.

EQ2, on the other hand, is more the classic fantasy character. Its the classic Tolkien type fantasy (please -dont go into detail anyone on the  eq vs tolkien chars - its an example) - a more realistic 3d model. And again the world is modeled the same way. The main flaw to EQ2 graphics would have to be the hardware that will be required to power these type of graphics to the extent they were intended to be displayed at.

One thing I do notice about EQ2 is that all the female faces seem to be inspired by the same source. Like the graphics guy's girlfriend or something. They all sort of have the same face structure--chubby cheeks, sharp chin, with a sort of bitchy, woman-scorned thing going. Can't really place it I guess.

Computer game programmers don't rate that kind of action:P Not even the artsie ones.

As far as player races go, you can customize all those facial features which on their own aren't hugely noteable but in the long run they really give each character a unique feel. I don't think it would be fair to compare the detail on WoW characters to EQ2 characters based on those screenshots, if any of you tinkered a little with the character creation program you'd know it's possible to create completely different "personas" using only slight modifications to the face, yes, I agree some body feature customizations are missing, but the characters are not lacking any detail imo.

And as far as which graphics I prefer, well, I'd have to vote for EQ2. First of all, the graphics on my computer (running the minimum requirements and lowest settings) don't look anything like the glossy plastic they look on the screenshots. But the main thing I find unappealing in WoW is the cartoon-ish low poly graphics, it's just too much like Warcraft3 or what EQ was 3 years ago with insanely vivid colors.

And lastly, saying I prefer EQ2 graphics does not mean one game is better than the other. It's just my personal preferance, tyvm.

While I am most looking forward to EQ2 I think graphically WoW is far better. (Guild Wars has no appeal to me but their characters and environment look better then either imo).

EQ2 suffers from an amazing lack of detail both in environments and with character models and their armor.  On top of that many of their character models are disproportioned.  Many of the races slender females have hips substantially wider then their shoulders which is rather rare on the human frame without being extremely over weight.

Besides the proportions, I also have to agree with one of the previous posters that many of them seem to suffer from a round chubby face which is fairly unappealing not ot mention odd considering the lore around elven body types.

The missing detail is one of the worst parts of EQ2's graphics as well.  I remember seeing one of the shots of a dwarf in plate armor.  It looked like he was wearing a silver spandex suit that they had given wrinkles to.

Amazingly despite this powerful graphics engine they have they cant even make long hair on characters like most other modern mmorpgs can.  They even go so far as to blame the fact that their engine is so advanced thats why it is hard to do long hair.  image

Ok, I am blathering, sorry.  I just want the game to be good and am really depressed by what they have done so far.

  • DjinDjin Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 3,263

Are you serious?  About the "our engine's to advance for the programmers to make long hair"?

If that's the case, that's one of the dumbest things SOE has even said...

    OMFG their idiots.

Thats not the exact wording they used obviously but it is the general thing they conveyed.  I will try to find the original post by Moorgard and link it.

Djin, if you hate EQ2 so much then don't play it, simple enough.
Stop the slandering and propaganda, go help Bush or Kerry get elected instead, atleast you could say you made a difference then. And untill you quit the "EQ2 sucks because" posts you will get no more attention from me.
